Coimbatore: Bharathiar University plans to document and archive all possible materials and sources on its namesake, the nationalist Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi.
The university will set up a world-class research centre, ‘Kaani Nilam’, which will act as a one-stop destination for all possible information, research requirements and queries about Bharathi, professors of the university’s Tamil department said.
“The university has taken up the project to mark the centenary death anniversary of the poet, which falls in September 2021,” said S Chitra, professor, department of Tamil, who is also organising the project.
“We will collect documents, manuscripts, research and archival materials and make it available for all so that anyone can use it for their research projects on Subramania Bharathi. Also, any Bharathi lover can visit the centre to experience his works and life,” she said.
In an attempt to recreate Bharathi’s life and personality, the centre will have models of the houses he resided at various points of his life. Besides having visualisations from his masterworks such as Kannan Paattu and Panchali Sabatham, the centre would also have a model of ‘kuyil thoppu’ or ‘koel orchard’, which features in one of his masterpieces ‘Kuyil Paattu’ (The Song of Koel).
To gather original materials related to the poet, the university authorities have been speaking to his descendants, Chitra said. “We have spoken to his sister’s son who lives in Varanasi. He is 96 now. He has the poet’s harmonium, a pen and other things used by Bharathi. Some other relatives have approached us saying they have rare documents related to him. We are trying to source them. If not, we will try to bring models of them for the centre,” she said. The centre will also house a collection of published secondary literature and pop culture references the poet, she added.
On Saturday, the university officials, headed by vice-chancellor P Kaliraj, held a discussion with writers, scholars and prominent people from the city and presented the idea to them.
