சென்னை: தற்காலிக ஆசிரியர்கள் அனைவரும் நாளை காலை 9 மணிக்கு பணியேற்க உத்தரவிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பழைய ஓய்வூதியத் திட்டத்தை அமல்படுத்த வேண்டும் என்பது உள்ளிட்ட 9 அம்ச கோரிக்கைகளை வலியுறுத்தி அரசு ஊழியர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள் கடந்த 22-ஆம் தேதி முதல் வேலைநிறுத்தப் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றனர்.


மாணவர்களின் நலன் கருதி ஜன.25-ஆம் தேதிக்குள் ஆசிரியர்கள் பணிக்குத் திரும்ப வேண்டும் என உயர்நீதிமன்றமும், தமிழக அரசும் விடுத்த வேண்டுகோள் பலனளிக்கவில்லை.

இதையடுத்து கொடுக்கப்பட்ட அவகாசம் முடிவடைந்ததால் தமிழக அரசு ஏற்கெனவே அறிவித்தபடி அனைத்து மாவட்டங்களிலும் அரசுப் பள்ளிகளுக்கு தற்காலிக ஆசிரியர்களை நியமனம் செய்யும் பணி தற்போது தீவிரமாக நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. பணிக்கு வராத 1.50 லட்சம் ஆசிரியர்கள் பட்டியல் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு அவர்களுக்கு விளக்கம் கேட்டு நோட்டீஸ் வழங்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.

இந்நிலையில், நேற்று சனிக்கிழமை இரவு 10 மணி வரை அனைத்து மாவட்டங்களிலும் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள ஆசிரியர்களில் 420 பேர் பணியிடை நீக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர். இதற்கான உத்தரவை அந்தந்த மாவட்டக் கல்வி அலுவலர்கள் பிறப்பித்துள்ளனர்.

இந்நிலையில், போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ள ஆசிரியர்கள் நாளைக்குள் (ஜன.28) பணிக்கு திரும்ப வேண்டும் என பள்ளிக்கல்வித்துறை எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ள நிலையில், தற்காலிக ஆசிரியர்கள் அனைவரும் நாளை காலை 9 மணிக்கு பணியேற்க வேண்டும் எனவும் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தற்கால ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள பணி நியமன ஆணையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாவது: தற்கால ஆசிரியர்கள் நியமனம் முற்றிலும் தற்காலிகமானது. இதன் அடிப்படையில் அரசு வேலைக்கு எந்த முன்னுரிமையும் அளிக்கப்படாது. அரசு அறிவிக்கும்போது, உடனடியாக எவ்வித முன்னறிவிப்பும் இன்றி பணியிலிருந்து விடுவிக்கப்படுவீர்கள். தொகுப்பூதியத்தில் சேரும் ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு அரசு நிதி ஒதுக்கீடு செய்த பிறகே சம்பளம் வழங்கப்படும் என பணி நியமன ஆணையில் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பயனளிக்குமா பிரம்மாஸ்திரம்?

எல்லா வழிமுறைகளையும் கையாண்டு அத்தனையும் பலனளிக்காமல் போகும் நிலையில்தான் போர் முனையில் பிரம்மாஸ்திரத்தைக் கையில் எடுப்பார்கள். பிரம்மாஸ்திரம் இலக்கு தவறக்கூடாது. தவறினால், இரண்டாவது முறை பயன்படுத்த முடியாது. இப்போது காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி பிரியங்கா காந்தியின் அரசியல் பிரவேசம் என்கிற பிரம்மாஸ்திரத்தைக் கையில் எடுத்திருக்கிறது.

இத்தனை நாளும் இல்லாமல் இப்போது மக்களவைத் தேர்தல் அறிவிப்புக்கு இரண்டு மாதங்களே இருக்கும் நிலையில், பிரியங்கா காந்தியை அகில இந்தியப் பொதுச் செயலாளராக்கி, கிழக்கு உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தின் பொறுப்பாளராக நியமித்திருப்பது யாரும் எதிர்பார்க்காத திருப்பம்.


அரசியலில் களம் இறங்கும் நேரு குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த 10-ஆவது நபர் இவர். மோதிலால் நேருவில் தொடங்கி இதற்கு முன்னால், ஜவாஹர்லால் நேரு, இந்திரா காந்தி, சஞ்சய் காந்தி, ராஜீவ் காந்தி, சோனியா காந்தி, மேனகா காந்தி, ராகுல் காந்தி, வருண் காந்தி என்று அரசியல் பிரவேசம் நடத்திய நேரு குடும்பத்தினர் ஒவ்வொருவரும் மக்களின் அங்கீகாரத்துடன் மக்களவைக்குத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இதிலிருந்து இந்தியாவில் நேரு குடும்பத்தின் மீதான விசுவாசம் தொடர்கிறது என்பதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடிகிறது. பிரியங்கா காந்தியின் அரசியல் பிரவேசம் கட்சி ரீதியாக மட்டும்தான் இருக்குமா அல்லது அவர் தேர்தல் களத்தில் குதிப்பாரா என்பதை மக்களவைக்கான காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியின் அதிகாரபூர்வ வேட்பாளர் பட்டியல்தான் வெளிப்படுத்தும்.

பிரியங்கா காந்தி நேரடி அரசியலில் ஈடுபடாவிட்டாலும் கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகளாகவே தொடர்ந்து தன் தாயார் சோனியா காந்தியின் தொகுதியான ரேபரேலியிலும், சகோதரர் ராகுல் காந்தியின் தொகுதியான அமேதியிலும் அவர்கள் சார்பில் கட்சித் தொண்டர்களையும் பொதுமக்களையும் சந்தித்து வந்திருக்கிறார். எல்லா அரசியல் பிரச்னைகளிலும் திரைக்குப் பின்னால் அவரது பங்களிப்பு காங்கிரஸýக்கு இருந்திருக்கிறது. இதற்கு முன்னால் பலமுறை அவரது அரசியல் பிரவேசம் குறித்த செய்திகள் வெளிவந்தபோதெல்லாம் அதை நிராகரித்த பிரியங்கா காந்தியும், சோனியா குடும்பத்தினரும் இப்போது பிரியங்காவை அரசியல் களத்தில் நேரடியாக இறக்கி இருப்பதற்குப் பல காரணங்கள் இருக்கின்றன.

ராஜஸ்தான், மத்தியப் பிரதேசம், சத்தீஸ்கர் ஆகிய மூன்று மாநில சட்டப்பேரவைக்கான தேர்தலிலும் காங்கிரஸ் தனித்துப் போட்டியிட்டு ஆட்சியைப் பிடித்தது முதலே ஏனைய மாநிலங்களிலும் காங்கிரஸ் தனித்துப் போட்டியிட வேண்டும் என்கிற குரல் எழுப்பப்பட்டு வருகிறது. உத்தரப் பிரதேசம், தில்லி, மேற்கு வங்கம், பிகார், கர்நாடகம் உள்ளிட்ட பல மாநிலங்களிலும் தனித்துப் போட்டியிடுவதற்கான முயற்சியில் காங்கிரஸ் ஈடுபடத் தொடங்கியிருக்கிறது. காங்கிரûஸ மாநிலக் கட்சிகள் மதிக்காமல் இருக்கும் போக்கு அதற்கு முக்கியமான காரணம்.

மக்களவைத் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிட உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தில் சமாஜவாதி கட்சியும், பகுஜன் சமாஜ் கட்சியும் மொத்தமுள்ள 80 இடங்களில் 76 இடங்களை, தலா 38 இடங்கள் வீதம் பிரித்துக்கொண்டு கூட்டணி அறிவித்திருக்கின்றன. ராஷ்ட்ரீய லோக்தளத்துக்கு 2 இடங்களும், காங்கிரஸýக்கு சோனியாகாந்தியும் ராகுல் காந்தியும் போட்டியிடும் ரேபரேலி, அமேதி ஆகிய 2 இடங்களும் மட்டுமே ஒதுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன.

காங்கிரஸ் பலமாக இருக்கும் ராஜஸ்தான், மத்தியப் பிரதேசம், சத்தீஸ்கர் மாநில சட்டப்பேரவைத் தேர்தலில் சமாஜவாதி கட்சியையும் பகுஜன் சமாஜ் கட்சியையும் கூட்டணியில் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளாமல் காங்கிரஸ் தவிர்த்ததைப் போல, இப்போது உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தில் அந்தக் கட்சிகள் காங்கிரûஸத் தவிர்க்க முற்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. இதன் எதிரொலிதான் உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தில் அனைத்துத் தொகுதிகளிலும் தனித்துப் போட்டியிடுவது என்கிற முடிவும், இப்போது பிரியங்கா காந்தியை நேரடியாகக் களமிறக்கி இருப்பதும்.

1989-க்குப் பிறகு உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தில், தான் இழந்த செல்வாக்கை மீட்டு காங்கிரஸôல் இதுவரை ஆட்சி அமைக்க முடிந்ததில்லை. 2009-ஆம் ஆண்டு தேர்தலில் பலமுனை போட்டி ஏற்பட்டபோது, காங்கிரஸ் 21 மக்களவைத் தொகுதிகளில் வெற்றி பெற்றது. ஆனால், தொடர்ந்து வந்த இரண்டு சட்டப் பேரவைத் தேர்தல்களிலும் 2014 மக்களவைத் தேர்தலிலும் மிகப்பெரிய பின்னடைவைத்தான் காங்கிரஸ் எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டியிருந்தது.

காங்கிரஸின் வாக்கு வங்கிகளாக இருந்த உயர் ஜாதியினர், சிறுபான்மையினர், பட்டியலினத்தவர்கள் ஆகியோர் காங்கிரûஸக் கைவிட்டதுதான் அதற்குக் காரணம். பெளத்த மதத்தைப் பின்பற்றும், கிறிஸ்தவர் ஒருவரின் மனைவியான பிரியங்கா காந்தியின் வரவால் சிறுபான்மையினரும், பட்டியல் இனத்தவர்களும் மீண்டும் காங்கிரஸýக்கு ஈர்க்கப்படுவார்கள் என்று காங்கிரஸ் தலைமை (ராகுல் காந்தி) எதிர்பார்க்கிறதோ என்னவோ?

பிரியங்கா காந்தியின் அரசியல் பிரவேசத்துக்கு இன்னொரு காரணமும்கூட இருக்கலாம். அவருடைய கணவர் ராபர்ட் வதேராவின் மீதான பல்வேறு வழக்குகள் நீதிமன்றத்தை எட்டியிருக்கின்றன. நீதிமன்றத் தீர்ப்பு அவருக்கு எதிராகத் தரப்பட்டு, அவர் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டால், அது பிரியங்கா காந்தியின் அரசியல் பிரவேசத்தைத் தொடர்ந்து எடுக்கப்படும் பழிவாங்கும் நடவடிக்கையாக சித்தரிக்கப்படலாம்.

2019 மக்களவைத் தேர்தலின் முக்கிய நிகழ்வாக பிரியங்கா காந்தியின் அரசியல் பிரவேசம் குறிப்பிடப்படும் என்பது மட்டும் நிச்சயம்.

அவர்கள் ஏற்கனவே பணிபுரிந்த பள்ளிகளில் பணியை தொடரலாம். அப்படி வர தவறினால் புதிய இடத்தில் பணியமர்த்தப்படுவார்கள். நாளை பணிக்கு திரும்பாத ஆசிரியர்கள் இடத்தில் ரூ.10 ஆயிரம் தொகுப்பூதியத்தில் தற்காலிக ஆசிரியர்கள் பணி நியமனம் செய்யப்படவுள்ளனர் என தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

28 ஆம் தேதிக்கு பின்னர் பணிக்குவருபவர்கள் அதே பள்ளியில் பணியாற்ற இயலாது. ஏதேனும் ஒரு காலிப்பணியிடத்தில் துறை நடவடிக்கைக்கு உட்பட்டே பணியில் சேர வேண்டியது இருக்கும்.

 

Crucial File on New NEET Norms, Which Enrich Private Colleges, Goes Missing

A crucial file at the Medical Council of India establishes why admission criteria were changed from percentage to percentile. The file is now untraceable.

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government’s decision to change medical and dental admission criteria from percentage to percentile had allowed less meritorious to get into colleges. It also enriched private medical and dental colleges, as richer students who were declared qualified bought the seats that were available.

However, it now looks like the file pertaining to that decision is missing.

‘File not traceable’

The Medical Council of India has stated in response to an RTI query that the crucial file pertaining to this decision was not traceable. The petition was filed in early December 2018 by lawyer-activist Dev Ashish Bhattacharya.

Through the plea, he asked for copies of “file notings, notesheets and correspondences, from initiation to the finalisation, through which the decision was taken to change the percentage system to percentile system for determining the merit of the candidates for selection into the medical and dental colleges through NEET.”

 The petitioner also asked if any change was incorporated in the provisions of the Medical Council Act for effecting the change from percentage to percentile system.

In its response, dated December 19, the “Board of Governors in Supersession of Medical Council of India” stated that “since the file regarding change from percentage to percentile system is not traceable, hence the information/ documents cannot be provided.”

Police complaint insists file “intentionally misplaced”

Bhattacharya wrote to Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik on January 14 demanding that a First Information Report be registered for “investigating and tracing untraceable government files at the office of the Medical Council of India as it concerns greater national interest.”

Making a mention of the RTI application filed with the MCI and the response received, the RTI activist said he “apprehends that the file concerned has been intentionally misplaced to prevent passing of information to the complainant about various illegality and irregularities being conducted to for determining the merit of candidates for selection into the medical colleges and dental colleges through NEET”.

He also stated that “as the concerned file is a government property it should be traced in the national interest.”

Demanding that the Delhi police register an FIR to bring the culprits to book as per the law, the lawyer-activist also demanded that the custodian of the files be identified and the files be reconstructed by collecting the documents from concerned departments.

`Percentile system gave admission to non-meritorious students’

The petition is significant because the introduction of the percentile system, which was supposed to keep non-meritorious students out, allegedly facilitated their entry into medical and dental colleges.

This was reflected in the admissions made through the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). Till admission year 2015, the cut-off for admission was 50% for general category students and 40% for reserved category students.

 With NEET being implemented from 2016, the cut off was changed to 50 percentile and 40 percentile for general and reserved category students respectively. This meant that the top 50% of all general category students and top 40% of all reserved category students became eligible for admission even if their marks were lower than 50% and 40% respectively.

After NEET, qualifying marks dropped consistently

So while till 2015, general category students needed to score at least 360 marks out of 720 to qualify, from 2016 onwards this requirement dropped drastically.

In 2016, the 50th percentile cut-off dropped to 148. This meant that even students scoring just 20.8% marks out of the maximum of 720 made the cut. In the case of reserved category, the 40th percentile requirement brought the cut off down to 118 marks or just 16.3% marks.

In 2017, the qualification marks dropped further to 131 or 18.2% for the general category and 107 or 107 or 14.8% for the reserved category.

In 2018, the pass marks decreased further to 119 or 16.5% for the general category and to 96 or 13.33% for the reserved category students.
 

Percentile system ensured a windfall for private colleges

The change to the percentile system has been criticised by academics and educationists. They insist that the system allowed non-meritorious students to pursue medical education to the peril of those they may treat in the future.

Moreover, with the total available seats being just about 60,000 across India and the number of students qualifying for admission being almost 10 times more, it allowed students with deep pockets to buy their way into private medical colleges. Thus, the scheme did not benefit economically weaker students.

Pinjala Subramaniam Street residents complain of noise, dust pollution

Residents of Pinjala Subramaniam Street in T. Nagar have been having sleepless nights for the past 10 days on account of a commercial building coming up on Usman Road.

The relentless construction activity on the structure, ravaged by a fire in June 2017, is causing severe hardship to motorists as well, giving rise to traffic congestion, dust and noise pollution, residents complain.

Since the construction of the Usman Road flyover, Pinjala Subramaniam Street has become the main thoroughfare for thousands of motorists to enter and exit the commercial locality. Also as the street houses several apartments, the residents are the worst affected by the resultant noise and dust pollution.

A resident of an apartment located just behind the commercial complex said the residents are unable to venture out on the road safely during day because of big construction vehicles. During the night, the constant movement of heavy vehicles was giving them sleepless nights. Moreover as the apartment houses a number of senior citizens and small children, the movement of heavy vehicles for construction activity was worrisome, he said.

Traffic congestion

Motorists using the street are also bothered by the heavy vehicles drastically reducing the carriageway and leading to traffic congestion.

M. Diwakar, a resident of West Mambalam, said the street previously used to be a two-way road but of late even walking on it looks dangerous because of the heavy vehicles parked in front of the construction site. When asked, a senior official of the Chennai City Traffic Police said permission had been given for construction vehicles only during the night. “If any heavy vehicles are found parked on the street during the day, action will be taken,” he said.

Institute of Mental Health inmates catch the sights on a half-day trip across the city

After almost two years, 50 patients of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) set out on a trip across the city on Republic Day.

Marina and Elliot’s beaches, a church and a temple in Besant Nagar and memorials of leaders were part of the itinerary as they travelled in a bus along with staff members on a half-day trip.

It was one patient’s desire to visit Mahabalipuram that made IMH director P. Poorna Chandrika revive the institution’s earlier practice of taking patients, who improved after treatment, on an outing every month.

This, IMH staff say, helps in providing recreation to patients who are otherwise confined to the campus.

“How will one feel when one is within the walls of a campus every day? When we step outside the gate, it is the sights and sounds of everyday life that gives us a connect with society. So I am planning to make this outing a routine. We can take the improved patients out once every month and sponsors can chip in to help IMH in this effort,” Dr. Chandrika said.

According to the Mental Healthcare Act, patients should not be compelled to wear uniforms, she said, adding: “They wore casual dresses, and we were happy to see them.”

Cause for cheer

For the patients — 20 women and 30 men — the trip brought a lot of cheer.

“They were very happy, and enjoyed every moment of the trip. Our first stop was Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar, followed by a visit to the Annai Velankanni Shrine and Ashtalakshmi Temple. After lunch, we left for Marina Beach and they enjoyed playing in the water. They had snacks on the sands of Marina and then visited the memorials of leaders,” said Arunachalam Shanthi, a staff nurse at IMH.

The patients were accompanied by a team of 16 staff members, including three staff nurses, two social workers, four security personnel and attenders.

“Earlier, we had a recreation hall on campus. Every month, we used to take improved patients on an outing, including for a movie. But this was stopped for nearly two years. The present director has revived it now,” she said. During the bus ride, comedy scenes of Goundamani, Senthil and Vadivelu added to their happiness quotient, she added.

There would be no funds left for public welfare schemes, he said.

In a statement, he urged the striking employees and teachers to return to work and warned of departmental disciplinary action if they failed to comply with the directive.

The government employees and teachers have been on indefinite strike since January 22.

The Minister gave a detailed explanation on why their demands cannot be met, highlighting the expenditure on salaries, pensions, administrative expenses and interest payments, which account for 71% of the State’s expenditure.

What Jaya promised

He claimed that the government employees and teachers were drawing more salary than the employees of private sector firms and institutions.

According to data provided by the Minister, a high school headmaster is paid Rs. 68,280 and their average monthly salary is Rs. 1,03,320. A supervisor in the State Ministry gets Rs. 44,280 at the time of joining, and now, their average salary is Rs. 66,840. A deputy secretary at the State secretariat, at the time of joining, gets a salary of Rs. 1,48,080 and the average salary is now Rs. 2,23,920.

Mr. Jayakumar clarified that former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had only promised that a committee would be formed to look into the possibility of reverting to the old pension scheme, and not for cancelling the new pension scheme.

On salary arrears, Mr. Jayakumar pointed out that the government stood to incur an additional expenditure of Rs. 14,500 crore on implementing the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, and due to this, the revenue deficit increased to Rs. 21,594 crore in 2017-18, and would touch Rs. 24,000 crore in 2018-19. The revenue deficit was met through market borrowings, he pointed out. If the salary arrears demand were to be cleared, the government would need an additional Rs. 20,000 crore, which it would have to borrow, he added. Additional borrowing would lead to imposition of additional taxes on people, he said.

The State government on Saturday rejected the demands of the striking employees and school teachers affiliated to the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Organisations and Government Employees Organisations (Jactto-Geo), citing a funds crunch.

This left little room for negotiations with the council, which has spearheaded the strike for the past five days.

An early resolution to the stand-off that has impacted classes in government-run institutions appears unlikely. Leaders of Jactto-Geo have declared that their strike would continue till their nine-point charter of demands presented on January 22 are met.

Opposition leaders, including DMK president M.K. Stalin and CPI(M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan, have urged the government to hold talks with the striking employees.

Heavy rainfall lashed the city on Sunday evening catching several commuters unawares. The rain led to flooding of several areas in the city.

The India Meteorological Department had issued a forecast for rain, thunder showers and hail in the State and maintained that this would continue on Sunday as well. Weatherman said that the rainfall was on account of an upper air trough, an area of atmospheric pressure, from East Vidarbha to north-interior Karnataka and passing across the state of Telangana.

While the initial spell of rain in the afternoon was light, the second one later in the evening, after 8.30 p.m., was heavier and continued beyond 11 p.m.. Motorists and commuters travelling on two-wheelers and pedestrians were stranded as it continued to pour. The city, the IMD said, recorded a rainfall of 1.3 mm up to 9.30 pm. “There was rain in the city, but no thunder showers. There was rainfall in different parts in Hyderabad and the activity started since morning,” a weatherman said.

Heavy rain was reported at Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Masab Tank, Lakdikapul, Mehdipatnam, neighbourhoods along the Inner Ring Road, and several parts of the Old City including Charminar, Moghalpura and Bahadurpura.

According to data obtained from Telangana State Development Planning Society website, the most cumulative rainfall of 13.3 mm till 10.30 pm was recorded in Shaikpet mandal. This was followed by Maitrivanam station, Ameerpet with 7.3mm and Asifnagar 4.3 mm.

While the traffic in the city was light on account of the Republic Day holiday, those travelling on two-wheelers were caught in the rain. Several people were seen taking shelter at bus stops and under flyovers. Those who had planned outdoor events rushed indoors while others had to face a washout.

From March 20, IndiGo to have Delhi-Istanbul daily non-stop flight

New Delhi: IndiGo will start a daily non-stop flight between Delhi and Istanbul from March 20, 2019, making it the most distant destination an Indian low cost carrier has had on its network till date. The airline has opened bookings for Istanbul, half of the city being in Europe, with promotional fares starting at ₹23,999.

IndiGo will be the first Indian carrier to fly to Turkey. Currently, Turkish Airlines has a daily direct on Delhi-Istanbul and Mumbai-Istanbul routes. IndiGo will deploy the Airbus A321-Neo to Istanbul, which will be IndiGo’s 16th international destination.

IndiGo’s flight from Delhi (with flagship code 6E 0011) will depart at 1.40pm and reach Istanbul at 6.10pm. The return flight (6E 0012) will leave Istanbul at 7.45pm and reach Delhi at 4.15am (all local timings). TNN

Government gives nod for cheap flights from six water airports

New Delhi: In about a year, you could be boarding a seaplane from the Sabarmati riverfront, like PM Narendra Modi did before the Gujarat state poll, to fly to the Statue of Unity. The government on Friday approved subsidized flights from six water airports that include (apart from the two mentioned above) Guwahati riverfront, Nagarjuna Sagar, Shatrunjay Dam and Umrangso reservoir under the third round of ‘ude desh ka aam nagrik (Udan)’ scheme.

International flights between Guwahati and Dhaka and Bangkok will also start under Udan-3, said aviation minister Suresh Prabhu.

All 235 routes — like Faizabad (Ayodhya) to Hindon airbase (near Delhi) — have been awarded under this regional connectivity scheme (RCS) scheme, with the spotlight being on seaplanes and Udan-international. TNN

Vodafone halts use of Huawei equipment over security row

Vodafone, the world’s second largest mobile operator, said it was “pausing” the deployment of Huawei equipment in its core networks until Western governments give the Chinese firm full security clearance.

The US and some allies, including Australia and New Zealand, have banned Huawei from 5G networks because of alleged ties to the Chinese government, while the firm has denied that its technology could be used by Beijing for spying.

Vodafone’s CEO Nick Read said on Friday after reporting third-quarter results that the debate was playing out at a “too simplistic level”, adding that Huawei was an important player in an equipment market which it dominates along with Ericsson Sweden’s Ericsson and Nokia. “We have decided to pause further Huawei in our core whilst we engage with the various agencies and governments and Huawei just to finalise the situation, of which I feel Huawei is really open and working hard,”

Men Impart Valuable Social And Life Skills To Their Children, And Provide A Sense Of Security For Taking Life-Shaping Risks

It is a common belief that men take on the duties of fatherhood reluctantly, but if that is so, why do they get involved in parenting at all? Evolution generally does not encourage males to devote resources to their offspring. An article in Aeon says only 5% of mammals have “investing fathers,” so, why do men opt for nappy duties?

Evolutionary anthropologist Anna Machin, who has written the book, “The Life of Dad: The Making of the Modern Father”, has some interesting ideas.

She writes that men came to have an important role in child-rearing because human babies are not only born weak and dependent, but also take many years to mature. While most species have three life-stages — infant, juvenile and adult — humans have two more: child and adolescent. Because of this extremely long dependent phase, it became necessary for the mother to take help from “someone who was as genetically invested in her child as she was.”

It is the woman’s interest to recruit help, but what’s in it for her man? Well, it’s no use fathering lots of babies if none of them survives. For men, the main point of mating is to pass on their genes, so protecting and providing for their children becomes worthwhile.

Doubters will say, if nature wanted men to be invested fathers, it would have given them an equivalent of the “maternal instinct”. It has, says Machin. Just as childbirth makes hormonal and brain changes in a mother, the father, too, undergoes some deep changes. There is an “irreversible reduction” in the level of the hormone testosterone, which reduces aggression and the urge to find new mates. The level of oxytocin also changes to make him “sensitive and responsive.”

Other hormones make a man enjoy interactions with his child. The instincts for nurturing and detecting threats become sharper, and fathers become better at “empathy, problem solving and planning.”

Because evolution hates redundancy, human fathers are not a carbon copy of mothers but complement them by fulfilling other important roles, says Machin. They impart valuable social and life skills to the child, and provide a sense of security for taking risks.

Brain scans show that when couples watch videos of their children, mothers have increased activity in the areas associated with affection and risk-detection, while fathers experience it in the areas associated with planning, problem-solving and social cognition.

Research also shows the importance of rough-and-tumble play for the child-father bond. Kids love to be thrown up in the air and tickled, so horseplay helps fathers bond with them quickly. More importantly, it teaches kids “how to judge and handle risk appropriately”, from an early age.

Even this is ordained by evolution, says Machin, as hormonal analysis shows “fathers and children get their peaks in oxytocin, indicating increased reward, from playing together.” That’s not to say children don’t like boisterous play with their mother, but they prefer cuddling with her.

Children who form a strong bond with their father go on to be more secure individuals who can “strike out and explore the world, safe in the knowledge we can always return to the focus of our attachment for affection and help.”

Attachment to the mother brings affection and care, says Machin, while attachment to the father makes children focus outward, “encouraging them to meet fellow humans, build relationships, and succeed in the world… It is fathers who aid the development of appropriate social behaviour, and build a child’s sense of worth.”

Clearly, the father is not incidental in a child’s life. Nature has given men the important role of ensuring not only their children’s survival but also their success.

AI gets DGCA nod to operate secret flight to Port of Spain

Amid persisting speculation that India was preparing to get hold of a high-value fugitive, Air India is learned to have got approval from the DGCA to operate a Boeing 787-8 for the special non-stop flight from Delhi to Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.

The DGCA nod comes amid strong buzz that India’s efforts to get hold of one highprofile economic offender holed up abroad may have resulted in a breakthrough, though there was no official confirmation. AI deploys the B787 Dreamliner on medium-haul routes from Delhi to Europe, Japan and Australia. For long-haul flights, it uses Boeing 777 which flies nonstop to both the east and west coasts of America.

Therefore, AI required clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for using the mediumrange Dreamliner on the ultra-long range (ULR) nonstop flight to the Caribbean.

Flight to have 13 cabin crew, 3 sets of pilots

The special flight is learnt to have been allowed with13 cabin crew members and three sets of pilots — three captains and as many copilots — who will take turns to operate after resting during the flight. The same drill is followed on AI’s Delhi-San Francisco and Mumbai-New York ULR routes. While the actual flying time will be determined by winds on the day of the flight, it is estimated that the flight from Delhi to Port of Spain will take16.5 to17 hours.

After landing,thecrewwill havetobe given 12hoursof rest — which is counted from the time they enter their hotel room and till they check out. So the total stopover as per crew requirement in Port of Spain will be 14.5 hours, with 2.5 hours being considered as time for the two-way commute between the airport and hotel.

AI is learnt have zeroed in on its senior pilots for the flight. Since the 256-seater (18 in business and 238 economy) aircraft will have in all less than 45 people on board (including six pilots and 13 cabin crew members) and very little cargo-hold baggage, the aircraft will be tanked up for operating the 14,000-km Delhi-Port of Spain non-stop flight.

Sources say AI’s request was cleared by the regulator without any doubt as it is the only Indian airline that has been operating ULR flights for decades. The Delhi-San Francisco flight it started almost four years ago is one of the longest non-stop flights.

Aadhaar info not conclusive proof in criminal probes: HC

Aadhaar card details — such as name, gender, address and date of birth — cannot be taken as conclusive proof during an investigation into a criminal case, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court has said.

These entries may be subject to verification in case of doubt, the court said in a January 9 ruling, which was made public on Friday night.

The court clarified that an Aadhaar card was a document that provided a conclusive link between the cardholder’s photograph, his/ her fingerprints and iris scan with Aadhaar number.

A bench of justices Ajai Lamba and Rajeev Singh said, “If a person relies on Aadhaar entries as proof of address and date of birth, these cannot be considered conclusive proof under the Evidence Act.”

The verdict came during the hearing of a writ petition in which a woman challenged an FIR lodged by her mother about her kidnapping with Sujauli police station in Bahraich.

In her FIR, the mother had said that her minor daughter was abducted by a man and his relatives. In her writ petition, the woman pleaded that she was a major and was not kidnapped but had married on her own free will.

She alleged that her mother did not accept her marriage and lodged a false FIR against her husband and his family members. On the high court’s intervention, police investigated the case and gave a clean chit to the woman’s husband and her in-laws. The case was closed.

However, during the hearing, the court took cognisance of the aggrieved woman and her husband’s Aadhaar card details, which mentioned her date of birth as ‘January 1, 1999’ and his as ‘January 1, 1997’.

The court was intrigued by ‘January 1’ in both the Aadhaar cards and said it found same date of birth in many such cards. Therefore, the court said, this must be clarified with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

On the court’s direction, UIDAI Lucknow regional office deputy director Jasmine filed an affidavit and appeared in the court. In the affidavit, she said, “Aadhaar is only proof that a person obtaining subsidy or service by identifying himself/herself on the basis of Aadhaar number is the same person who enrolled after providing biometrics and documents.

“If a resident does not have a valid date of birth document, it’s recorded on the basis of a declared date. If the date is approximate, the age is verbally communicated by the resident to the operator, based on which the year of birth is calculated. By default, the date of birth is recorded as January 1 of that calendar year.”

After this clarification by UIDAI, the court said name, gender, address and date of birth on the Aadhaar card can’t be taken as conclusive proof.

Rejects All Demands Of Protesters

Rejecting outright the demands of the striking government employees and teachers, the state government on Saturday asked them to return to work or face disciplinary action.

The Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Organizations and Government Employees’ Organizations (Jactto-Geo), the supreme body of government staff, however, vowed to continue with the indefinite strike. The high court also had asked the employees to resume work.

The government has already started cracking down. Those who were remanded or let out on bail in the last two days – official estimate says 450 people - have been suspended and more would follow in the coming days, government sources said. While slogan shouting is taken lightly, road roko invokes trouble. The department heads have shot off letters directing district collectors to act. Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami held a high-level meeting of ministers and bureaucrats earlier in the day and took stock of the situation.

Soon after, personnel and administrative reforms minister, D Jayakumar said that a government committee on pay anomalies had already turned down old pension scheme, a key demand of the staff, as that would mean more spending on salaries and pension and no funds for welfare schemes in a few years. “Experts had warned of bankruptcy with rising pension expenses annually… No government will accept this (old scheme). The state has to work for the people, not to disburse salaries/ pension,” the minister said. On the demand to hike pay scale of secondary grade teachers on a par with the Central staff, Jayakumar said it would affect horizontal and vertical parity. The state’s own tax revenue stood at ₹1.64 lakh crore in 2018-19, of which 47% is spent on payment of salaries and pension.

Jayakumar said the state would incur an additional expenditure of ₹20,000 crore to disburse the dues of seventh pay commission from the notional date. This is another key demand of the staff.

The striking teachers will have to face more trouble as temporary teachers are replacing them across the state with overwhelming response. “There is no vacancy technically when the teacher gets back to work. They will have to go to the CEO concerned and get a posting, but they will be posted in the next village or town or district. Not in the same place. Tahsildars, deputy tahsildars or block development officers taking part in the strike will be posted outside the district,” said a senior official.

Hold talks with workers, Stalin urges CM

In a statement, Stalin said the CM should assure the employees to look into their charter of demands. Recalling the strong-armed tactics adopted by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa against government employees when they struck work years ago, Stalin said it had led to Jayalalithaa losing power in the subsequent election. “More than 51 teachers’ associations and 114 government employees’ associations are protesting against the new pension scheme,” said Stalin. HC asks govt to make blind man principal of city college

A person with total blindness is all set to be the principal of a city college, as the Madras high court has ordered the government to post him here, closer to his accommodation, because he found it difficult to commute to Tiruttani on work, where he currently heads the Arulmighu Subramaniaswamy Arts College.

Justice S Vimala (since retired), issuing the direction on a petition filed by R Jayachandran, asked the state higher education secretary and the director of collegiate education to post him in Chennai as it was difficult for him to go to Tiruttani and return to Chennai daily.

Jayachandran said though he was working in Tiruttani, he was given a government quarters at Thirumangalam, Chennai. Being a person with 100% blindness, he said he found it very difficult to travel to Tiruttani and return in the evenings, he said. He approached the directorate of collegiate education on December 13, 2017, ahead of his promotion to the post of principal grade-I, with a request that he be posted in a college or training centre in Chennai. His representation in this regard to the chief minister’s office was forwarded to authorities but no action was taken, he said.

When the matter was taken up for hearing, his counsel said guidelines mandated preference to persons with disabilities in matters of postings and transfers, besides accessible accommodation near the place of work. Though the post of joint director of planning and development was available since June 2018, he was not considered for the vacancy, he complained.

Justice Vimala, after going through the guidelines and government order dated December 10, 2017, directed the authorities to post Jayachandran in one of the six government colleges in the city.

Official caught talking during national anthem

A railway official at the Chennai Central station was caught on video talking on the phone while the national anthem was being played during the Republic Day celebrations on Saturday.

In the video that has gone viral on social media, the official is seen saluting the national flag, while the national anthem was being played. He’s seen taking out a cellphone from his pocket and talking while his right hand is still in salute mode.

No Claimants For Rental Income From Properties

J Jayalalithaa is no more, but the former chief minister’s bank accounts and woes arising out of unpaid income tax are still alive and kicking.

Two days after the income tax department shocked the state by saying that Jayalalithaa’s famous Poes Garden house and three other properties had been under attachment since 2007 in lieu of her ₹16 crore tax arrears, it now turns out that her bank accounts continue to receive remittances.

“We have information about rental income received from commercial and residential assets, including the Kodanad estate, being deposited into her bank accounts every month, ” said a senior I-T official.

The tax arrears and liability arising out of the income from these assets are increasing since her death on December 5, 2016, as no one has come forward to take responsibility to clear the arrears and file tax returns.

“As per the Income Tax Act, after attaching four of her properties, we told the sub-registrars concerned not to deal with any of these assets. And unless her income tax arrears are cleared, the assets cannot be sold or leased out,” the official said.

Jaya poll forms silent on ₹16cr tax arrears

It has now emerged that former CM J Jayalalithaa had not disclosed her ₹16-crore income tax arrears and encumbrance on her four properties in the affidavits submitted along with her nominations for Srirangam and RK Nagar constituencies in 2011and 2016. The assets were attached in 2007. Instead, her affidavits merely made a fleeting reference to the issue. “Income tax returns were filed up to the assessment year 2015-16 and assessments have been completed for the year 2013-14. The additional liability on account of income tax assessments is not determinable as the additions have been disputed at the appellate level,” the affidavits had said.

“Not providing such information would amount to suppression of material facts. This would affect the poll prospects of a candidate,” said senior counsel and former additional solicitor general P Wilson.

Official: Bundles of papers in Jaya’s file mind-boggling

The senior I-T official said, “We, apart from informing the sub-registrars, sent several reminders to the former chief minister calling upon her to pay the arrears. But she did not take any step either to clear the arrears or release her assets from attachment. Bundles of papers in her file is mind-boggling. There are details about reminders, summons and they had gone forward and backward, but no action was taken to clear the arrears and release the assets”.

“It was in 2007 that we had to attach her immovable assets — Veda Nilayam, at Poes Garden; No 8, Ground Floor, Parsn Manor, Anna Salai; 213/B, St Mary’s Road, Mandaveli; and 8-3-1099, Plot No 36, Sri Nagar Colony, Yellareddyguda, Hyderabad — as the former CM failed to pay tax arrears for several years before 2007,” the official said.

Noting that the details presented in the Madras HC were based on records maintained by tax-recovering officer and that the department was firm on that, he said, “We only want a legal representative to file returns and to clear the arrears.”

Attachment of Jayalalithaa’s immovable assets surfaced in the high court, when a PIL filed by social activist K R ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy to restrain the Tamil Nadu government from converting her Poes Garden residence into a memorial, came up for hearing on Thursday.

TN suspends 450 staff, teachers; more action from Monday likely

The state government on Saturday suspended 450 teachers and government staff after many of them were sent to jail for holding demonstrations as part of their statewide strike. The crackdown will continue with disciplinary action under 17 (b) for unauthorized absence from Monday. The Madras HC had advised teachers to resume work keeping students’ interest in mind.

Personnel and administrative reforms minister D Jayakumar on Saturday said the government rejected some demands of the protesters due to financial constraints. “The staff should understand that they get higher pay than those in the private sector,” he said. Reports about closure of 5,000 schools and merger of 3,500 schools were false propaganda of the unions, Jayakumar said.

Jactto-Geo state coordinator M Anbarasu said the government, which had no problem in revising the salary of MLAs and bureaucrats, was raising an issue over setting right pay anomalies of its staff. “We want the CM to hold talks as the minister had been promising to take the issue to CM’s notice for the last two years.” Strike would continue till our demands are met, he said.

Chennai: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu called upon private sector healthcare professionals to expand facilities to the rural areas, where the majority of India’s population live to eliminate the urban-rural divide in this crucial sector.

“While we have successfully eliminated some infectious diseases and improved the reach of healthcare delivery, there still is a glaring disparity in the provision of the services between urban and rural areas,” he said.

Inaugurating the Apollo Proton Cancer Center in the city on Friday, he highlighted the challenges in delivering healthcare facilities in the country despite the availability of modern methods of treatment and better healthcare.

He said that though the efforts by Union and state governments to provide healthcare facilities are being complemented by the private sector, it is mostly confined to urban areas.

“Although, these procedures are being performed at much less costs when compared to the western world, they are still out of financial reach of many people,” he said.

The Vice President expressed his concern over various obstacles in universal health coverage including inadequate public spent, low doctor-patient ratio, high share of out-of-pocket expenditure, inadequate infrastructure in rural areas, lack of penetration of health insurance and inadequate preventive mechanisms.

“As mentioned earlier, all stakeholders in the healthcare sector must address this issue on a war footing. Advanced health treatment costs have to be made affordable and within the reach of all sections,” said Vice President.

Venkaiah Naidu also addressed the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the country and cited World Health Organization (WHO) report for 2018 that states NCDs account for 63 per cent of deaths in India. He highlighted the need of a national campaign on the health hazards caused by modern lifestyle. He also advised Apollo Hospitals to launch mobile screening vans for both urban and rural areas to ensure wider coverage of screening programmes.

Chennai: A 25 -year-old school teacher had a traumatic experience on Thursday night while getting back home from school.

An auto driver allegedly kidnapped her and sprinkled chloroform on he face. she eventually managed to escape, but in the process, she was attacked by the kidnapper. The police have filed an FIR and launched a search for the abductor.

According to the Police, Emalda( 25) a resident of Iyya Street in Chetpet works as a teacher in a reputed private school in Vepery. The incident happened on Thursday night around 8 pm outside the school.

Sources said, On Thursday night, Emalda boarded an auto outside the school and asked him to drop in her house in Chetpet. A few minutes later, she found something amiss in his behaviour and asked the man to stop the auto, When the man allegedly attacked and sprinkled chloroform in her face.

After a few minutes, Emalda regained consciousness and found she was near Porur. As the auto was taking a U-turn at a signal, the woman jumped out leaving her handbag in the auto. The driver fled the spot.

Meanwhile, Emalda on Friday lodged a complaint with the Vepery police. Police have launched a search for the man

Chennai: The Madras high court has declined to entertain a plea from an advocate to initiate contempt proceedings against the government teachers in the state, who are resorting to strike from January 22 along with other government employees under the Joint Action Committee of Teachers Organization-Government Employees Organization (JACTO-GEO).

When Naveen Kumar Murthi sought permission to move an urgent motion, a division bench comprising Justices M.Sathyanarayanan and P.Rajamanickam said this court had only directed the government teachers to return to work by January 25 in the interest of Children. It is for the government to monitor and take appropriate action against them

The bench had on January 23 while hearing a petition from a XI student Gokul, which sought to restrain JACTO-GEO from resorting to strike, passed an interim order directing the government teachers to return to work not later than January 25.

Actress Bhanupriya, accused of harassing 14-year-old domestic help denies charges

Chennai: South Indian actress Bhanupriya has been accused of harassing a 14-year-old girl whom she allegedly hired as domestic help. The police complaint against the actress was filed in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday by the girl’s mother.

The woman has further alleged that the girl, not paid regular salary, was harassed and the family was not allowed to meet her. However, the actress has denied the allegations.

She told reporters in Chennai that the girl, who was between 16 and 17 years, working in her house for a year and was stealing money, jewellery and other valuables. The girl was allegedly sending the stolen goods to her house through her mother whenever she was visited her.

According to the sources, a 14-year-old girl was employed by Bhanupriya at her residence in Chennai. On Thursday the girl’s mother, Prabhavathi, filed a missing complaint with the Samalkot police station in East Godavari.

The woman alleged that Bhanupriya took her daughter to Chennai to employ her as her domestic help. She said her daughter was promised Rs 10,000 per month as salary. The woman said that for the last 18 months, the girl has not been paid and that she was not allowed access to her daughter. The girl’s family and relatives visited Bhanupriya’s residence earlier this month after they received an anonymous call, claiming that their daughter is being harassed by Bhanupriya’s brother Gopala Krishna.

Later, with the help of child welfare groups, the victim’s mother filed a complaint with the police.

However, under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act 2016, those accused of employing children below 14 years of age for any work can get up to two-year imprisonment and a fine of maximum ` 50,000. The mother is also punishable for giving away the child for labour.

Meanwhile, Bhanupriya claimed that she did not know the age of the girl.

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami sent a strong message to protesting government teachers and employees on Friday. Citing the financial constraints being faced by the State because of the ongoing rehabilitation works in districts affected by Cyclone Gaja and the drought-like situation due to the failure of monsoon in some other parts, the Chief Minister said: “The strike by government employees and teachers in this difficult situation is unfortunate and painful. I appeal to them to end the agitation and return to duty.”

Addressing a public meeting to mark the ‘Language Martyrs Day’, the Chief Minister alleged the employees had fallen prey to “false propaganda” of the opposition parties. “In fact, they are being instigated by Opposition parties, which have been making a false claim that the State government is refusing to meet the demands despite having sufficient funds. In reality, the government is facing financial constraints due to a cyclone on one hand and drought on the other.”

He said the government had to do justice to these people by extending assistance. While pointing out that 75 per cent of the revenue earned by the government is spent on salaries and pensions, and only the rest is used for developmental and welfare schemes, Palaniswami said his government “will not remain a mute spectator to the problems faced by the people.”

The government, Palaniswami said, has fulfilled many demands made by employees and teachers.
“Teachers who are protesting must think about the quantum of salary being drawn by their counterparts in the private sector. I am not finding faults... I am just presenting the facts... I request the teachers to extend cooperation to the government,” he added. “They are engaged in strike despite receiving a good hike in salary.”

CHENNAI: The batch of 1969 of the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) will celebrate their 50th year reunion at the college premises on January 26 and January 27. At the two-day meet, 120 alumni will reminisce their college days.

The Alumni Association of the College of Engineering, Guindy (AACEG) will inaugurate an integrated rainwater harvesting unit at the new ladies hostel on the campus. This 60,000-litre unit will be able to support the needs of 3,000 students, said D Parthiban, secretary, AACEG. They will also donate a `10-lakh corpus fund towards the hostel fees of economically backward students.

The batch of 1969 will also honour their teachers with a memento on the day. The chief guest for the event is vice chancellor of Anna University, MK Surappa, and the guest speaker for the day will be dean of CEG, TS Geetha.

On the second day, the alumni and their families will stay at a resort in Thiruvanmiyur, where several games, performances by their peers, and a stand-up comedy routine has been organised. A member of the batch of 1969 himself, Parthiban said, “This is a chance to meet old friends from all over the world. We had our last meet-up during the 40th year reunion in 2009. This is a bigger event, and many people are coming for the first time.”

CHENNAI: Teachers who participated in the indefinite strike organised by Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisations, can avert disciplinary action against them, if they present themselves at their schools for Republic Day celebrations on Saturday, said a circular issued by the Chennai Chief Education Officer.

The circular, which has come four days after members of the Council started their indefinite strike on Tuesday, said that if the teachers participated in the Republic Day celebrations in their schools and continued to work thereafter, disciplinary action would not be taken against them as per law. However, they will still not be given salaries for the days they were absent under the ‘no-work-no-pay’ policy, the circular added.

“This is a chance for teachers to avert action against them. However, if they do not show up on Saturday, we will replace them with temporary staff on Monday,” said Chief Education Officer R Thiruvalar Selvi. She added that the Department was serious about taking action as Board practical exams for class 12 will begin on Feb 4.

Notices given to teachers

While thousands of notices were issued in several districts, only 407 notices were issued to teachers in Chennai, owing to limited participation by teachers working in the city’s government schools.

Star Air begins flight services

Air passengers from Hubballi and surrounding areas will now be able to fly more frequently to Bengaluru and Tirupati as Star Air has announced direct flights connecting Bengaluru, Hubballi, Tirupati and Belagavi on Friday.

In addition, Star Air has also announced an introductory promotional fare at Rs. 1,299 on Bengaluru-Hubballi routes and Rs. 2,099 on Hubballi-Tirupati and Rs. 2.599 on the Belagavi-Bengaluru route.

The new flight services were formally launched at a function here on Friday in the presence of Revenue Minister R.V. Deshpande, former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, former MP and Chairman of VRL Group Vijay Sankeshwar and Chairman of Sanjay Ghodawat Group, Sanjay Ghodawat, Shrenik Ghodawat and others.

Briefing the media about the group’s new venture Star Air, Mr. Sanjay Ghodawat said initially the focus would be on increasing flight connectivity between Maharashtra and Karnataka. Subsequently, they planned to connect Hubballi to the world. He said best in class aircraft had been introduced by the company to ensure the best experience at affordable fares.

Minister R.V. Deshpande said such initiatives would go a long way in improving infrastructure which in turn would boost economic activity. Acknowledging that the Central scheme UDAN had helped improve air connectivity in the State, Mr. Deshpande said very soon Kalaburagi too would figure in the air map of the country as it was expected to get bids in the next round of auctions for routes under the scheme.

Mr. Shettar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of making air transport affordable had benefited Hubballi and in the coming days, air connectivity would further improve in North Karnataka.

Mr. Sankeshwar said that Hubballi was chosen by the British for setting up an airport even before Independence, but due to various developments post-Independence, the proposal did not get enough of a boost. He said the DGCA should make its regulations more stringent to ensure only genuine companies remained in the field.
