Biryani By Kilo

Biryani has been the most ordered dish on fool delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy for the past couple of years. India has witnessed a sudden rise in Biryani selling platforms however a company has been dominating this space for almost decade. The brand we are talking about is Biryani By Kilo which is now worth over Rs 800 crore. Founded by industry veterans Kaushik Roy and Vishal Jindal in 2015, Biryani By Kilo claims a revenue of Rs 300 crore in FY23 and it expects to break even in the first quarter of FY24. It recently raised Rs 72 crore in its Series C round led by Alpha Wave Ventures.

Biryani By Kilo specialises in offering 4 variations of freshly dum cooked handi biryani - Hyderabadi, Lucknowi, Kolkata and Guntur. Along with India’s most ordered dish Biryani, the company also sells kebabs, korma, desserts and breads to millions of customers. The company currently operates in more than 100 outlets across over 45 cities including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Dehradun, Kolkata and the state of Goa among others. Biryani By Kilo also has an omnichannel strategy by having its own website, dine-in restaurants, and dedicated customer care centre.

In the initial months, the brand only managed to sell Biryani worth Rs 5-6 lakh but as per a Times Now Hindi, the company now gets Rs 22-25 crore every month by selling Biryani. Over the years, the brand’s popularity has gone through the roof and if reports are to be believed, the famous Biryani has even been served on the set of popular TV show Bigg Boss.

Rs 7-lakh off on Toyota Innova Hycross?

Rs 7-lakh off on Toyota Innova Hycross?

Published 4 hours ago on March 20, 2024By Swaraj Acharekar

The Government of India is trying its best to promote EVs and flex-fuel with several incentives. But the same can’t be said about hybrids, as currently they are taxed almost on par with their petrol counterparts leading to high prices on hybrid cars like the Innova Hycross. Now Nitin Gadkari has stated that taxes on hybrid cars could be reduced. Models like Toyota Innova Hycross, Maruti Grand Vitara could get cheaper by Rs 7 lakh. How? Let’s talk about the upcoming tax structure for Hybrid cars in India.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road, Transport & Highways, was speaking at News18’s Rising Bharat Summit 2024. He stated that the 43% (28% GST + Cess on hybrids is quite unfair as hybrids, though not as clean as EVs, are better than ICE engines in this aspect. Going further, he urged the finance minister to discuss this issue at the next GST council meeting. Nitin Gadkari Ji wants GST to be reduced to 12% as it will help make hybrid cars more affordable.

Hybrid cars in India – What does this mean to you?

Currently, GST (28%) + Cess (15%) on hybrids is 43%. Nitin Gadkari has urged to slash the GST to 12%, leading to GST (12%) + Cess (15%) =27%. So hybrids could get cheaper by 16%. For example, if the current ex-showroom price of a car like Innova Hyrcross is Rs 25 lakh (including 15% cess + 28% GST), then under the new taxation the ex-showroom price of the car would reduce to Rs 18 lakh (15% cess + 12% GST). This gives us a massive saving of 6 lakh making hybrids even cheaper than their petrol counterparts in some cases.

Toyota’s plea

Toyota has been urging the government to reduce taxes on hybrid cars. Last year, Toyota India’s country head sent a letter to Niti Aayog. At that time the brand was looking to bring the tax for hybrids to 37% and flex-fuel hybrids to 34%. Along with that, the brand was also looking for government incentives on road taxes etc like it offers to EV buyers. Though the company and Niti Ayog didn’t respond to the rumours at that time, Toyota’s request seems to be heard.

The government introduced the new tax regime to streamline the process of filing taxes, aiming to make it more straightforward for taxpayers. The main goal was to simplify the tax filing experience by eliminating the need for taxpayers to navigate through numerous deductions and exemptions to decrease their taxable income. Instead, the focus shifted to offering reduced tax rates. In this overhaul, deductions for expenses such as rent, travel, medical, certain allowances, and interest on loans for self-occupied properties were scaled back. Nonetheless, even under this new system, taxpayers have the ability to claim certain exemptions:
Here's a breakdown of some key allowances as per Shilpi Jain, Partner, Ved Jain and Associates*

Standard Deduction: This replaces several deductions previously available under the old regime. In the new regime, a standard deduction of Rs. 50,000 is offered to all taxpayers, regardless of their income level.

Retirement Benefits: Both gratuity and leave encashment received upon retirement remain non-taxable.

Employer Contributions to NPS/PF: Contributions made by the employer towards NPS (National Pension System) or PF (Provident Fund) are not taxed under the new regime. While the old regime allowed tax exemptions on employee contributions under Section 80C, these are not deductible under the new system.

Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG): Taxpayers can still avail themselves of the deduction on long-term capital gains from the sale of equity shares or equity-oriented mutual funds, up to a limit of Rs 1 lakh, under the new regime.

Jain explains this with the following example:

Annual Salary: Rs 8,00,000
Employer's Contribution to NPS: Rs 40,000
Gratuity Received on Retirement: Rs 2,00,000
Leave Encashment on Retirement:Rs 1,50,000
Long-Term Capital Gains from Equity Shares: Rs 1,20,000
Total Income earned : Rs 13,10,000
Deductions from this income
Standard Deduction : Rs 50,000
Gratuity : Rs 2,00,000
Leave Encashment: Rs 1,50,000
LTCG : Rs 1,00,000
Employer's contribution to NPS : Rs 40,000
Total deductions : Rs 5,40,000
Net Taxable Income : Rs 7,70,000
Under New tax regime, you can also claim tax exemption for the following, as per ClearTax:

Transport allowances in case of a specially-abled person.
Conveyance allowance received to meet the conveyance expenditure incurred as part of the employment.
Any compensation received to meet the cost of travel on tour or transfer.
Daily allowance received to meet the ordinary regular charges or expenditure you incur on account of absence from his regular place of duty.
Perquisites for official purposes
Exemption on voluntary retirement 10(10C), gratuity u/s 10(10) and Leave encashment u/s 10(10AA)
Interest on Home Loan on let-out property (Section 24)
Gifts up to Rs 50,000
Deduction for additional employee cost (Section 80JJA)
