Beyond Hanging Up Your Boots: Consider Entrepreneurship Or Learn A New Skill;
Network Early If You Want To Continue Working
By Prabir Jha 29.10.2025 TIMES OF INDIA AHAMEDABAD
When we begin our careers, retirement is a distant, almost unimaginable milestone. And yet, inevitably, that day arrives for everyone. Over the next five years, an entire generation will retire, a moment that invites both reflection and reinvention. And yet, not much is done or written about this career reality. It is a moment with a deep sense of redundancy.
People worry about their loss of identity, and many are unable to imagine a different life as most have lived just one cookie-cutter way. But it can still be life with purpose. And possibly one that is happier. Here are some pointers on how to deal with what comes next:
Start early In the corporate world, with turbulence all around, that date could dramatically move closer. Start working on post-retirement pursuits early, if you still want the classical work. Maybe there is some post retirement sinecure you are able to wrangle within your organisation or beyond. It is not easy for many executives to let go so this makes them buy time but does not change the end goal post. Or you can offer to do part-time work for firms who will value your skills and experience.
Network early enough. It gets tougher once you demit office. Think entrepreneurial pursuits Entrepreneurial creativity is not a function of age. Those who are creative, and now free of both family and official encumbrances, could initiate a completely different venture. Give wings to a dream which you never could pursue thus far. Remember, some of the biggest brands today were started by people after their retirement. It will help you stay alert, be purposeful and help grow with a renewed passion and purpose. Live experientially Possibly with family responsibilities behind, one could focus on securing experiences one never did yet.
It could be learning a new musical instrument, writing a book, travelling places or feeding a hobby. So many people complain they have so much time to kill. This is because their thinking is linear. Think wide and you will discover a range of things you can do
Give back to the community We all got so much from the world we live in.
After retirement, it is time to clear that debt. Join a social cause that you relate with. Help guide, mentor, advise, inspire a demographic slice that needs your time, interest and activism. You will discover it is more gratifying to make a difference to lives of people. And who knows, if politics is a way of doing this, you can always explore that route of public service.
Finally, put your feet up A ‘susegad’ life is a reward well-earned and it should come without guilt. Let go of the crutches you once mistook for your identity, and rediscover the person behind the professional. Embrace laughter, ease, and unhurried days. After all, what did you work so hard for if not this?
A comfortable, peaceful retirement free from the frenzy of a fast-paced career may well be the most fitting reward for a life fully lived. Why should that ever be seen as a lesser choice? There is no one magic potion for a post-retirement existence. Neither work nor retirement gives you everything but each stage offers its own gifts.
Think through all these options and their attendant consequences. Make your pick and be at peace with that choice.
