Ahmedabad : A retired senior citizen, resident of Vadaj, fell victim to a cyberfraud while attempting to make an online payment through the IRCTC mobile application on Jan 3. Dipak Parikh, 66, lodged a complaint with cybercrime police on Saturday, detailing the incident and expressed his concerns about the growing menace of online scams targeting innocent individuals.

According to the complaint, Parikh was attempting to load funds into the IRCTC wallet using his AU Small Finance Bank savings account. Despite multiple attempts, the transaction failed. Seeking assistance, he used the “Ask Disha” help section on the IRCTC app and provided all necessary details to get the problem fixed. Shortly thereafter, he received a call from an individual claiming to be a representative from IRCTC customer service. The caller assured Parikh that his issue would be resolved and guided him to share his banking details under the guise of troubleshooting. 

Unaware that he was being scammed, Parikh followed the instructions, leading to unauthorised access to his bank accounts. Within minutes, a significant amount of money was siphoned off from both his savings and overdraft accounts. Realising he had been cheated, Parikh approached the cops. Cybercrime police registered a complaint of cheating, breach of trust, and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and under the Information Technology Act against the unknown accused.

Trains are an affordable mode of transport popular with a majority of the citizens. Almost anyone you meet will have a story to share about the crazy encounters they had while travelling on the Indian Railways.

In a similar incident, a family was caught sneaking in bedsheets provided by the railways along with their luggage.

A video that was shared on Reddit under r/indianrailways shows a frustrated railway employee going through a passenger’s luggage on the platform and retrieving several bed sheets from it.

The video, seemingly from Prayagraj, has gone viral with 5.2k likes and a slew of comments criticizing poor civic sense among the public.

One Reddit user says how such actions are glamorized in society as “kand” with youth being encouraged into problematic behaviour to seem cool. “The problem is there are parents who also encourage such actions, there are men who talk about these acts “Kand” that they did in school and college. People normalize such behaviour(u)rs. In a friend group(s) it’s an achievement and instead of calling out bad behaviour(u)r people laugh and make jokes about how they stole things or broke things in school and college. So to combat it we as a society should start teaching accountability, honesty, kindness, good manners and many important things to people around us.” said the commenter.

Other people wondered how someone would even use the sheets with the railways logo on them to which some people replied that people would boast about the stolen goods to their guests while someone else replied “My landlord who was a manager is a reputed bank, also had the bedsheets and pillow covers from Indian Railways symbol everywhere, when we rented the apartment we were surprised to see that.”

Some people took the incident on a lighter note saying “Insaan souvenir bhi na collect kare ab?” (Are people not allowed to collect souvenirs now?).

Be it over-crowding, hygiene or the quality of food, this incident highlights just one of the many problems that the Indian Railways faces.

Bengaluru : Karnataka HC recently quashed proceedings against entrepreneur Gaurav Dahake in a case registered against him by Indian Railways, for charging Rs 30 per ticket on his software tool speeding up Tatkal bookings on the official IRCTC website. Dahake, an IIT Kharagpur graduate and native of Maharashtra, had previously founded ‘buyhatke.com’, a product price comparison online browser extension.

 In Aug 2017, he developed a software tool, ‘Tatkalforsure’, to help travellers secure Tatkal tickets by auto filling traveller details on the IRCTC website. While the Railways’ website took 5-7 minutes to generate a Tatkal ticket, Dahake’s tool could do it in just 45 seconds. The service was initially free, but in Feb 2020, Dahake limited bookings through his extension to 10 and began charging Rs 30 per booking. HC observed that the ingredients of Section 143 of the Railways Act, under which Dahake was booked, weren’t present in this case as he had neither procured nor distributed railway tickets, which is necessary for an offence here.

Hyderabad: A district consumer forum has directed the India Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to pay 20,000 as compensation for cancelling confirmed tickets at the eleventh hour during festival season rush.

In her complaint to the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission–II, Hyderabad, Khursheed Begum said she had booked four tickets through an app for the Howrah Special Train to travel from Secunderabad to Vizianagaram on Jan 13, 2021. She had paid 6,470 for 2AC and also received confirmation via email.

But on the day of the journey, Khursheed said she received an automated call informing her of cancellation of her booked tickets while she was waiting at the platform to board the train and merely an hour before travel. She said that no reason had been given for the cancellation. The complainant also pointed out that she received no response from the customer care centre despite calling it multiple times to find out the reason for the cancellation.

She said that as her travel plan was during Sankranti, all buses had been booked and with great difficulty her family managed to get a ticket for an ordinary bus, incurring additional expense of 4,589, to reach Vizianagaram.

A complaint was filed by her with the consumer forum on the grounds that cancelling tickets an hour before departure without assigning a valid reason amounted to deficiency of service and unfair trade practice. Despite serving notice, IRCTC did not appear before the forum and was considered ex parte.

During the trial, the commission confirmed that the tickets were cancelled when the consumer was waiting on the platform at the Secunderabad railway station.

“As no valid reasons have been assigned by the opposite party for either abrupt cancellation of confirmed tickets an hour before departure of train or deducting 470 while refunding the fare, we are under the considered view that it is just and reasonable to order considerable compensation to be payable to the complainant for inconvenience and hardship caused to her and her family apart from the refund of deducted amount,” the bench said.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) announced an air tour package from Coimbatore to Hyderabad that begins on December 17 from the Coimbatore International Airport.

A release said that the tour package would cover major tourism spots of Hyderabad including Charminar, Golconda Fort, Salar Jung Museum and Lumbini Garden.

The package cost starts from ₹ 15,595 and would cover air fare, travel and accommodation expenses. Those interested shall contact IRCTC, Coimbatore, at 82879 31965 and 90031 40655 for bookings and for further details.

As the mercury shoots up in the plains, tourists with a passion for skiing are thronging a snowed-out Gulmarg. Most hotels in this picturesque Kashmir town are fully booked through March and some even till mid-April with many well-heeled domestic tourists, who used to flock to foreign ski havens for their annual winter break in pre-Covid times, discovering Gulmarg as a refreshing alternative closer home.

Not only skiing enthusiasts — mostly from Delhi and Mumbai — Gulmarg is also attracting less-adventurous folks bored of being largely confined to their homes for a year. “The peaceful atmosphere in J&K over the last couple of years and the mandatory Covid testing at airports has made tourism here a safe and secure alternative to flying abroad,” says Vinit Chhabra, general manager of The Khyber Himalayan Resort and Spa in Gulmarg.

As many as 29 hotels and resorts in Gulmarg, according to a list accessed by TOI, are fully sold out for most of March, while some have 100% bookings till mid-April. The Khyber is fully booked till March end, The Rosewood Hotel till April 10, The Vintage till April 13 and JKTDC Huts through most of March.

“People who always had J&K on their bucket list are now coming here, having been presented with an opportunity. Also, mandatory Covid testing (at airports/railway stations/inter-state border) gives a psychological assurance that no visitor infected with Covid will make it to tourist spots inside the state,” he added.

Most hotel and resort managers TOI spoke to were upbeat about the positive impact on the regular tourist season in Kashmir, which starts in May, with Pahalgam, Srinagar, Sonmarg likely to witness good arrivals. “For the locals, a good tourist season means better earnings and more job opportunities,” said Eijaz Bhat, manager at Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC) Huts in Gulmarg.

Bhat attributed the full bookings in Gulmarg to the conscious push given by the Centre as well as J&K government under LG Manoj Sinha, to revival of tourism in the Valley. For instance, Khelo India event was held in the ski resort last week, with the Prime Minister inaugurating it. He added that JKDTC has offered 50% discount on its hotel fares through the Union Territory.

According to Farooq Ahmad of The Rosewood hotel at Gulmarg, tourists from all income groups are making a beeline for Gulmarg. “The excitement of witnessing a snowfall, a first for many, is the main attraction,” he said. “Even for those interested in skiing, Gulmarg is a far cheaper alternative to foreign resorts,” added Bhat.

Of course, the celebrity arrivals in Gulmarg have helped. Bollywood actors Vidya Balan and Arbaaz Khan recently took vacations in Gulmarg. Chhabra of The Khyber disclosed that he recently had to deny a room reservation to actress Sara Ali Khanas the hotel was fully booked.

அதை எதிர்த்து, உச்சநீதி மன்றத்தில் தமிழக அரசு மேல்முறையீடு செய்தது.இந்த வழக்கு இன்று விசாரணைக்கு வந்தது. அப்போது மத்திய அரசு சார்பாக ஆஜரான மத்திய அரசின் தலைமை வழக்கறிஞர் கே.கே. வேணுகோபால் நீட் அவசர சட்டத்தை மத்திய அரசிடம் தமிழக அரசு கொடுத்துள்ளது. ஆனால் நீட் தேர்வுக்கு விலக்கு அளிக்கும் அவசர சட்டத்துக்கு எந்த ஒரு ஆலோசனையையும் தமிழக அரசு கேட்கவில்லை என கூறினார்.நீட் தேர்வு குறித்து மத்திய அரசும் சிபிஎஸ்இயும் பிரமாண பத்திரம் தாக்கல் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று நீதிமன்றம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.இதைத்தொடர்ந்து, மாநில மொழியில் நீட் தேர்வு எழுதியவர்களில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவர்கள் எத்தனை பேர் என்றும் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவர்கள் விவரத்தை ஆகஸ்ட் 10ம்தேதிக்குள் தாக்கல் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் நீட் தேர்வு தொடர்பான வழக்கை ஆகஸ்ட் 10ம் தேதிக்கு உச்சநீதிமன்றம் ஒத்தி வைத்துள்ளது.

சிபிஎஸ்இ கல்வி வாரியம் நடத்தும், அகில இந்திய மருத்துவ நுழைவு தேர்வில் இருந்து, தமிழக மாணவர்கள் விலக்குபெறும் வகையில், மருத்துவ படிப்பில் 85 சதவிகிதம் உள்ஒதுக்கீடு செய்து தமிழக அரசு அரசாணை வெளியிட்டிருந்தது. அந்த அரசாணையை சென்னை ஐகோர்ட்டு ரத்து செய்தது. அதை எதிர்த்து மேல்முறையீடு செய்யப்பட்ட வழக்கும் தள்ளுபடி செய்யப்பட்டது.அதைத்தொடர்ந்து தமிழக அரசு சார்பில் சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டில் மேல்முறையீடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.இதன் காரணமாக தமிழகத்தில் மருத்துவ மாணவர் சேர்க்கை மீண்டும் தாமதமாகி வருகிறது.

IRCTC launches special summer tour packages

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will launch three packages as part of summer special tours.

According to a release, the first one is from April 11 to 22 to destinations such as Goa, Pushkar, Jaipur, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Delhi and Agra and is priced at Rs. 9,900 per person. Persons from Karnataka can board the train from Bengaluru, Arsikere, Davangere and Hubballi.

The second, a three-day trip to Shirdi, Shani Shingnapur Trimbakeshwar and Panchavati will be on April 12, 19 and 24, including onward and return air tickets (Bengaluru-Pune-Bengaluru), and is priced at Rs. 11,542.

The third trip, a three night/four day trip to North Goa and South Goa is priced at Rs. 11,779 per person on twin sharing basis.
