வாஜ்பாய்க்கு ‘பாரத ரத்னா’ விருது

இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் அடைந்தபிறகு, முதல் ஜனாதிபதியாக டாக்டர் பாபு ராஜேந்திர பிரசாத் பதவியேற்று, அந்த பதவிக்கு பெருமை சேர்த்தார். அவர் நாட்டில் பல்வேறு துறைகளில் ஒப்பற்ற சேவை செய்தவர்களுக்கு ‘பத்மஸ்ரீ, பத்மபூஷன், பத்மவிபூஷன், பாரத ரத்னா’ விருதுகளை அறிவித்தார். இதில், பாரத ரத்னா விருதுதான் மிக உயரிய விருதாகும். 1954–ம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி மாதம் 2–ந்தேதி இந்த அறிவிப்பை அவர் வெளியிட்டார். 1954–ல் முதலாவதாக டாக்டர் ராதாகிருஷ்ணன், ராஜாஜி, சர்.சி.வி.ராமன் ஆகியோருக்கு பாரத ரத்னா விருதுகள் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டன. அடுத்த ஆண்டு ஜவகர்லால் நேருவுக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டது. டாக்டர் ராஜேந்திர பிரசாத், ஜாகிர் உசேன், லால்பகதூர் சாஸ்திரி, இந்திரா காந்தி, மொரார்ஜி தேசாய் என்று பலருக்கு உயிரோடு இருக்கும்போதே வழங்கப்பட்டது. காமராஜர், ராஜீவ் காந்தி, எம்.ஜி.ஆர். போன்ற தலைவர்களுக்கு அவர்கள் மறைவுக்குபிறகு பாரத ரத்னா விருது வழங்கப்பட்டது. அன்னை தெரசா, நெல்சன் மண்டேலா, கான் அப்துல் கபார் கான் ஆகியோர் வெளிநாட்டினராக இருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்கும் விருதை வழங்கி, இந்தியா பெருமைபடுத்தியது. கடந்த ஆண்டு இந்த விருது விஞ்ஞானி சி.என்.ஆர்.ராவுக்கும், கிரிக்கெட் வீரர் சச்சின் தெண்டுல்கருக்கும் வழங்கப்பட்டது. இதுவரையில் 43 பேர்களுக்கு பாரத ரத்னா வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இந்த ஆண்டு இந்த விருதை முன்னாள் பிரதமர் வாஜ்பாய்க்கு வழங்க பா.ஜ.க. அரசாங்கம் திட்டமிட்டு வருவதாக செய்திகள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன. வருகிற 25–ந்தேதி அவருடைய பிறந்தநாள் கொண்டாடப்பட இருக்கிறது. இந்தநாள் நல்லாட்சிதினமாக கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. வாஜ்பாய் இப்போது உடல்நலக்குறைவால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். எங்கேயும் வெளியே வரமுடியாத நிலையில் அவதிப்படுகிறார். தேர்தலுக்கு முன்பே பா.ஜ.க. நாங்கள் ஆட்சிக்கு வந்தால், நாட்டின் உயரிய விருதான பாரத ரத்னா விருதை வாஜ்பாய்க்கு வழங்கி அவரை பெருமைப்படுத்துவோம் என்று பிரகடனப்படுத்தியது. கடந்த வாரம் நடந்த பா.ஜ.க. பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் கூட்டத்தில், எல்லோரும் இந்த கோரிக்கையை வலியுறுத்தினர். கடந்த ஆண்டு ஐக்கிய முற்போக்கு கூட்டணி அரசாங்கம், சச்சின் தெண்டுல்கருக்கும், சி.என்.ஆர்.ராவுக்கும் பாரத ரத்னா விருதை அறிவித்தபோதே, வாஜ்பாய்க்கும் வழங்கவேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கை விடுக்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால், அப்போது அரசியல் காரணங்களை மனதில் வைத்து வேண்டுமென்றே அவர் பெயரை காங்கிரஸ் தலைமையிலான ஐக்கிய முற்போக்கு கூட்டணி அரசாங்கம் அறிவிக்கவில்லை என்பதே பா.ஜ.க.வின் ஆதங்கம். ஆனால், வாஜ்பாய் அரசியலுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டு அனைவரின் நன்மதிப்பையும் பெற்றவர். அரசியல் நாகரீகத்தின் எடுத்துக்காட்டாக விளங்கியவர். எதிர்கட்சியினர்கூட, குறிப்பாக பா.ஜ.க. மீது மாற்றுக் கருத்து கொண்டவர்கள்கூட வாஜ்பாய் என்றால் தனி மரியாதை கொண்டவர்கள். பா.ஜ.க.வை எதிர்த்து நிற்கும் நேரத்தில்கூட, தி.மு.க. தலைவர் கருணாநிதி வாஜ்பாய் பற்றி குறிப்பிடும்போது, அவர் தவறான கட்சியில் இருக்கும் நல்ல தலைவர் என்று பாராட்டியிருக்கிறார்.

வாஜ்பாய் பிரதமராக இருந்த காலத்தை இந்தியாவில் யாரும் மறந்துவிடமுடியாது. கன்னியாகுமரி முதல் காஷ்மீர் வரையுள்ள தங்க நாற்கர சாலை அவர் செயல்படுத்திய அற்புதமான திட்டமாகும். இன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் அருமையான சாலைகளில் தரைவழி போக்குவரத்தில் மக்கள் விரைவாக பயணம் செய்யும்போது நிச்சயமாக அவர் பெயரைச் சொல்லாமல் இருக்கமுடியாது. இதுபோல, பொக்ரான் அணுகுண்டு சோதனையை வெற்றிகரமாக நடத்தி உலகம் முழுவதையும் இந்தியாவை ஆச்சரியத்தோடு திரும்பிப் பார்க்க வைத்தார். இந்தியா முழுவதிலும் உள்ள நதிநீர் இணைப்பில் அதிக அக்கறையோடு இருந்தார். தமிழ்நாடு மீதும், தமிழர்கள், தமிழக அரசியல்வாதிகள் மீதும் அதிக அன்பு கொண்டவர். 1974–ல் கச்சத்தீவு இலங்கைக்கு தாரைவார்க்கப்பட்டபோது, பாராளுமன்றத்தில் கடுமையாக எதிர்த்தவர். சுதந்திர போராட்ட தியாகி, பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர், வெளிவிவகாரத்துறை மந்திரி, பிரதமர் என்ற அவருடைய எந்த முகத்திலும் ஒளிவிட்டு மிளிர்ந்த வாஜ்பாய்க்கு, இந்த ஆண்டு ‘பாரத ரத்னா’ விருது வழங்க அரசியல் வேறுபாடு இல்லாமல், ஒட்டுமொத்த நாடே முன்மொழியவேண்டும்.

ரேஷன் அட்டையில் உள்தாள் ஒட்ட சிரமமா?- வழிகாட்டுகிறார்கள் அதிகாரிகள்

கிழிந்த நிலைமையில் உள்ள பழைய ரேஷன் அட்டைகளில் 2015-ம் ஆண்டுக்கான உள்தாள் ஒட்ட முடியாத நிலை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

தமிழகத்தில் 2005-ம் ஆண்டில் ரேஷன் அட்டைகள் வழங்கப்பட்டன. கடந்த 9 ஆண்டுகளில் 4 முறை உள்தாள் ஒட்டப்பட்டு இதே ரேஷன் அட்டைகளைத்தான் நுகர்வோர்கள் பயன்படுத்தி வருகின்றனர். இதனால் பலரது ரேஷன் அட்டைகள் கிழிந்து மிகவும் மோசமான நிலையில் உள்ளன.

பழைய முறையில் ரேஷன் அட்டைகளை வழங்குவதற்கு பதிலாக நவீன பயோமெட்ரிக் ரேஷன் அட்டைகள் வழங்கப்படும் என்று 2011-ம் ஆண்டில் அரசு அறிவித்தது. இதன் மூலம் போலி ரேஷன் அட்டைகளை தடுக்க முடியும் என்று அரசு கருதுகிறது. பயோமெட்ரிக் ரேஷன் அட்டை குறித்து உணவு பொருள் வழங்கல் துறை சார்பாக அரசுக்கு 5 அம்ச பரிந்துரைகள் அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. எனவே

2015-ம் ஆண்டில் நுகர்வோர் களுக்கு நவீன பயோமெட்ரிக் ரேஷன் அட்டைகள் வழங்கப்படும் என எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால், அது குறித்த அறிவிப்பு எதுவும் வெளியாகவில்லை.

இந்நிலையில் ரேஷன் கார்டுகளில் உள்தாள் ஒட்டும் பணி மாநிலம் முழுவதும் நேற்று தொடங்கியது. மொத்தம் 23,355 முழுநேர ரேஷன் கடைகளில் இந்த பணி நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. 1.96 கோடி கார்டுகளுக்கு உள்தாள் ஒட்டப்படவுள்ளது. ஆனால், பல ஆண்டுகளாக பயன்பாட்டில் இருப்பதால் பலரது ரேஷன் அட்டைகள் கிழிந்துள்ளன. இதனால் பலரால் உள்தாளை ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள முடியவில்லை.

இது குறித்து தமிழ்நாடு உணவு பொருள் வழங்கல் மற்றும் நுகர்வோர் பாதுகாப்பு துறை அதிகாரி ஒருவர் கூறும்போது, ''பழைய ரேஷன் கார்டு மிகவும் கிழிந்து அத்தியாவசியமாக மாற்று ரேஷன் அட்டை தேவைப்பட்டால் நுகர்வோர்கள் தாங்கள் ஏற்கெனவே வைத்துள்ள கிழிந்த ரேஷன் அட்டையை சம்பந்தப்பட்ட கடையில் ஒப்படைக்க வேண்டும். அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு மாத காலத்துக்குள் மாதிரி ரேஷன் அட்டை வழங்க அலுவலர்களுக்கு அறிவுறுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. அலுவலர்கள் யாராது மாதிரி ரேஷன் அட்டை வழங்க பணம் கேட்டால் உணவு பொருள் வழங்கல் துறையில் புகார் தெரிவிக்கலாம்“ என்றார்.

10 ரூபாய் சாப்பாடு: மதுரையில் ஒரு மனிதாபிமானி

தானத்தில் சிறந்தது அன்னதானம் என்போம். அக்காலத்தில் அன்னசத்திரங்கள் கட்டி வழிப்பயணம் மேற்கொள்பவர்களுக்கு உணவளித்த பாரம்பரியம் மிக்கவர்கள் தமிழர்கள் என்கிறது தமிழர் வரலாறு. ஆனால் குடிநீரும் விலைக்கு வாங்க வேண்டிய இன்றைய நவீன உலகில் அன்னதானத்தின் நிலை பற்றி சொல்வதற்கில்லை.

இன்றைய பாஸ்ட் புட் காலத்தில் குடும்பத்துடன் சாதாரண ஒரு ஹோட்டலுக்கு சென்றாலும் செலவாகும் தொகை நிச்சயம் உங் கள் மாத சம்பளத்தில் ஒரு கணிசமான பங்காகத்தான் இருக்கும். அப்படிப்பட்ட சூழலில் எல்லோரையும் திரும்பி பார்க்க வைக்கிறது இந்த 10 ரூபாய் சாப்பாடு.

மதுரை அண்ணா பேருந்து நிலையத்தில் அமைந்திருக்கும் இந்த கடையில் எப்போதும் கூட்டம் அலை மோதியபடியே இருக்கிறது. கல்லாப்பெட்டியிலும் கஸ்டமர் கவனிப்பிலும் பாதிப்பாதி கவனமாக பரபரப்பாக இயங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் கடையின் உரிமையாளர் எஸ்.ராம்சேர்வைக்கு வயது 85. மதிய உணவு இடைவேளையில் கூட்டம் குறைந்திருந்த ஒரு நேரத்தில் அவரிடம் பேச்சு கொடுத்தோம்.

“ஏழ்மையான குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்தேன். அதிகம் படிக்காததால் ஆரம்பத்தில் கூலி வேலைதான் பார்த்தேன். போதிய வருமானமில்லாத நிலையில் கல்யாணம் நடந்தது. அதன்பின் அந்த சம்பளம் கொஞ்சமும் கட்டவில்லை. மனைவியோடு கலந்து பேசினேன். எதாவது ஒரு தொழிலை செய்யனும். அது மனதுக்கு திருப்தியானதாகவும் இருக்கணும் என முடிவு செஞ்சேன். வறுமையான குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்ததால் பலநாட்கள் பட்டினி கிடந்திருக்கேன்.

என்னை போல் எத்தனை பேர் உணவுக்கு கஷ்டபடுகின்றனர். அப்படிப்பட்டவர்களுக்கும் எதாவது செய்யவேண்டும் என்று கூறியதை என் மனைவி ஏற்றுக்கொண்டாள்.

பொருளாதாரத்தால் வாழ்க்கை நிலை உயர்த்தலாம் என்ற நிலையிலும் என் யோசனையை என் மனைவி எந்த வாதமுமின்றி ஏற்றுக்கொண்டதற்காக அவளுக்கு தான் நான் நன்றி சொல்லவேண்டும். 1967 ஆம் ஆண்டு சிறியதாக கடையாகத் துவக்கினேன்.

முதலாளி தொழிலாளி ரெண்டுமே நானும் என் மனைவியும் தான். ஆரம்பத்தில் 1.25 ரூபாய்க்கு சாப்பாடு கொடுத்தோம். விலை மலிவாக இருந்ததால் அரசு ஊழியர்களும், கல்லூரி மாணவர்களும் எங்களுக்கு நிரந்தர வாடிக்கையாளர்களானார்கள்.

வாடிக்கையாளர்கள் இந்த விலையில் திருப்தியடைந்ததால் அவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சியை நீட்டிக்க எந்தக் காலத்திலும் கையை கடிக்கும் விலையை நிர்ணயிக்க கூடாது என்று உறுதி எடுத்துக்கொண்டேன். இன்று வரை கடைபிடித்தும் வருகிறேன். பல சமயங்களில் இந்த பணத்தையும் தர இயலாதவர்களிடம் என் மனைவி காசு வாங்க மாட்டாள்.

“குறைவான தொகைதானே அதையும் ஏன் இலவசமாக தரவேண்டும்” என நான் எப்போதாவது கூறினாலும் அவள் நிறுத்திக்கொள்ளமாட்டாள். இப்போது அவள் முடியாமல் இருக்கிறாள். அதனால் யாராவது வந்து காசு இல்லை என்று சொன்னாலும் கூட சாப்பாடு போட்டு அனுப்புவேன். மலிவான விலை இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்காக தரம் குறைந்த அரிசியை பயன்படுத்துவதில்லை. பொன்னி அரிசி மட்டுமே பயன்படுத்துகிறேன். மற்ற ஹோட்டல்களுக்கு ஈடாக கூட்டு ரசம் மோர் ஊறுகாய் என ருசியான உணவையே செய்து கொடுக்கிறேன்” என்கிறார் முகத்தில் பெருமிதம் படர.

“நான் வள்ளலாரின் பக்தன். அவர் சொன்னபடியே தான் செய்கிறேன். அன்னதானம் செய்வது மிகச் சிறப்பானது என்றாலும் என்னிடம் அந்தளவு பணம் இல்லை. அதனால் என் மனதிருப்திக்கு விலை குறைவாகவும், இலவசமாகவும் உணவு தருகிறேன். போதிய வருமானம் இல்லை என்றாலும் மனதுக்கு திருப்தி இருக்கிறது ” என்று சொல்லும்போது விவரிக்கமுடியாத மகிழ்ச்சி ராம்சேர்வையின் முகத்தில்.

இந்த கடையில் காலை 4 இட்லி, பொங்கல், தோசை-2 , மதியம் சைவ சாப்பாடு எதுவாக இருந்தாலும் 10 ரூபாய் தான். இந்த விலையால் பலர் ஆர்டர் தந்து வறியவர்கள் மற்றும் முதியவர்களுக்கு தானம் கொடுக்கச் சொல்வர். அதையும் தவிர்க்காமல் செய்கிறார் ராம்சேர்வை.

உலகநாதன் என்ற வாடிக்கையாளர், “1986 லிருந்து சாப்பிட்டு வருகிறேன். சாதாரண ஓட்டலுக்கு சென்றாலும் பாக்கெட்டை பதம் பார்த்துவிடும் அங்குள்ள உணவுகளின் விலைப்பட்டியல். ஆனால் இத்தனை வருடங்களாக சாப்பிட்டும் எனக்கு இந்த விலை ஒரு செலவாகவே தெரியவில்லை.

உணவும் தரமாக இருப்பது ஆச்சர்யம் தருகிறது. அசைவ ஹோட்டல் என்றால் சாதாரணமாக ஒரு பிரியாணி குறைந்தது 200 ரூபாய். இங்கு அந்த பணத்தில் 6 பேர் கொண்ட ஒரு குடும்பம் 3 வேளை உணவு சாப்பிடலாம். அதுவும் இங்கே வயிறு நிறைய மன திருப்தியுடன்” என்றபடி ஒற்றை 10 ரூபாய் தாளுடன் கல்லாவை நோக்கி நடக்கிறார்.

வாழ்க்கை முழுதும் படிப்பவர்கள் பலபேர். ஆனால் வாழ்க்கையையே படிப்பவர்கள் மிகச் சிலர். அந்த சிலரில் ராம்சேர்வையும் ஒருவர். தன் உழைப்பையும் முதலீட்டையும் முகம் தெரியாத மனிதர்களுக்காகவும் செலவிடும் ராம்சேர்வை போன்றவர்கள்தான் மனிதநேயம் என்ற ஒற்றை வார்த்தையின் மீது இன்னமும் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ள காரணமாகிறார்கள்.

வெறும் பாராட்டுக்களால் அவருக்கு நமது மகிழ்ச்சியை தெரிவிக்காமல் அவரைப்பின்பற்றி நாமும் நம் வாழ்வில் மனிதநேயத்தை பின்பற்றுவோம்.

SYDNEY HOSTAGE CRISIS ENDS, GUNMAN, 2 OTHERS KILLED

A 17-hour-long hostage drama in which a lone heavily-armed man of Iranian-origin held 17 people hostage at a cafe here ended late tonight with the police storming it, resulting in three deaths but two Indians who were among the captives escaped safely.

Police fired stun grenades and shots as they stormed the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Sydney’s commercial district after 2:30 AM local time Tuesday (9 PM IST Monday) and later declared that the siege was over.

The 50-year-old gunman Man Haron Monis and two hostages were killed and four other people were injured, Commissioner Andrew P Scipione of the New South Wales(NSW) police said at a joint news conferencewith the state Premier Mike Baird at 5.45 AM local time.

The gunman was shot and pronounced dead after being taken to hospital, NSW police said in a statement.

Two hostages -- a 34-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman -- were also pronounced dead after being taken to hospital, it said.

A police officer was among the four injured, police said.

The gunman, a self-styled Muslim cleric, was described by his former lawyer as an isolated figure, who was acting alone.

Two Indian nationals -- Vishwakant Ankit Reddy and Pushpendu Ghosh -- were among the hostages involved when Monis began his siege. However, Reddy, an Infosys employee in his mid-30s, and Ghosh, whose details were not known, escaped safely.

Reddy has been working in Australia for the past seven years and is a native of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

Both are undergoing medical check-ups, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in New Delhi.

Monis, who arrived in Australia as a refugee in 1996, notoriously sent letters to the families of Australian soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan, accusing them of being murderers.

In November last year, he was charged with being an accessory before and after the murder of his ex—wife, who was allegedly stabbed and set alight in her apartment complex. In March, he was charged with sexually and indecently assaulting a young woman in 2002.

Baird called the attack “horrendous and vicious”.

Five to six hostages, including the Indian techie, were seen running out of the eatery before the police raided the cafe. Earlier in the day, just over five hours into the siege, five people, including a woman, had escaped from the cafe.

“It was the act of an individual. This should never destroy or change the way of our life,” Scipione said.

The gunman, a “selfstyled sheikh”, was described by his former lawyer as an isolated figure.

A “critical incident investigation” into the operation that ended the siege has been launched, police said.

“About 2:10am (Tuesday), a confrontation occurred between police and a man who had taken a number of people hostage inside a cafe on Martin Place,” the police statement said.

“Shots were fired during the confrontation. As a result, the 50-year-old man was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital,” it said.

Two women were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and a third woman was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to her shoulder.

A male police officer suffered a non-life threatening wound to his face from gunshot pellets and was in hospital.

A 35-year-old woman was also taken to hospital as a precaution, the statement said.

Police confirmed no explosives were found at the cafe.

Police raided the cafe after they heard a number of gunshots from inside, Scipione said.

“They made the call because they believed that at that time, if they didn’t enter, there would have been many more lives lost,” he said.

“Until we were involved in this emergency action, we believe that no one had been injured. That changed. We changed our tactic,” Scipione said, adding that all 17 hostages had been accounted for.

“Sydney siege is over,” New South Wales police tweeted minutes after loud bangs and gunshots were heard as police stormed the cafe in Martin Place here, close to the Indian Consulate which was closed as result of the siege.

The siege began after 9 AM local time as Monis, who was granted political asylum in Australia, took the people captive.

Although the Indian cricket team is currently in Brisbane, some 700 kms away from Sydney, security around them was also significantly beefed up in the wake of the hostage crisis.

Australian authorities conveyed to the Indian government that the team’s security has been enhanced.

The gunman was reportedly armed with a shotgun and made a series of demands through Australian media like the delivery of an Islamic State flag and a conversation with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

During the siege, television footage showed people inside the cafe with their hands pressed against the window holding the black flag with Arabic script known as Shahadah, a prayer spoken in mosques daily. The flag displayed was not one specific to the Islamic State terror group, reports said.

“There is no God but Allah; Mohammed is his messenger” was written on the black flag.

HARROWING HOURS AS SYDNEY HELD ITS BREATH

An account of the Sydney hostage crisis from the vicinity of the Lindt Cafe

Monday morning started off as a normal, bright summer day at Martin Place, the gently sloping civic centre of Sydney which is a pedestrian plaza, with the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) at the upper (east) end and the erstwhile GPO and WWI Cenotaph at the bottom (west) end. The Lindt Café is a popular meeting place close to the RBA and just opposite the city studio of Channel 7 TV.

My colleague Ben Robinson was caught up in the events that unfolded.

“Just as my bus was approaching Martin Place, a police car went past at speed with the sirens on. This was just as the gunman was first engaged by police at about 9:50 a.m.,” he said.

“When I got off 30 seconds later, 50 metres from Lindt Café, the police had blocked the intersection, and were stopping pedestrians from crossing the street. At that stage there was no blockage of Martin Place and police had only just arrived on scene. I saw a small huddle of police standing outside Chambers Bar across the street from me, which they were using as a safe vantage point. Several police were closer to the café, but they then withdrew back to Chambers Bar with guns drawn.

“An officer in black police gear then told me and other onlookers, ‘You’d better move away. You’re in danger right now just standing here. You could be shot at any moment’.”

“I was in one of the last buses to get through; they started locking down Martin Place straight away. By the time I got to the office, about five blocks away, the city was in lockdown,” Mr. Robinson said.

For me, the first indication that anything was wrong was when office administration rushed in and told us that they had been advised that the Central Business District (CBD) was in lockdown, and that none of us was to leave the office until further notice. There was stunned silence.

We were told that the after-hours building access control had been activated, so only those with valid electronic passes could get in to the building.

Across the office, disbelief was quickly followed by dismay that this was happening in Sydney as the news came in of the hostage situation at the Lindt Café and images of the black flag with Arabic script and employees pressed against the glass appeared on Internet news and the TV.

We heard other reports — of possible bomb threats in other parts of the city; of an arrest the Australian Federal Police had made in Beecroft, a Sydney suburb, that morning of someone suspected of being involved in a terror attack on Sydney; and there having been an evacuation at the Sydney Opera House as a suspicious package had been found.

Then came the news of the iconic Harbour Bridge being shut and flights being diverted from overflying the city. The normally busy roads around the office had little or no traffic and only pedestrians could be seen. Toward midday, more details emerged with broadcasts by the State Premier and the police chief respectively on the events so far and the measures being taken, and the Prime Minister describing the incident as ‘profoundly shocking’.

By 1:30 p.m. the lockdown was lifted and the Harbour Bridge had reopened, but there were major traffic disruptions as several roads in and around Martin Place had been cordoned off.

We left under police escort. I was not sure I could get my car from the parking lot at Martin Place, and close to the spot under siege, until I went there and found police were letting cars already in the area to leave.

The trains were running but Martin Place station was shut and buses were being rerouted with long queues at some bus stops. There were police blocks and barricades around the city centre.

It was no illusion.
