Harvard, NTRUHS to join hands

NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) is in the advanced stages of forging a tie-up with Harvard Medical School (HMS) for improving medical education standards in Andhra Pradesh. It will be the first medical university in India to have a tie-up with HMS.

HMS has formally agreed to help medical colleges in the State raise their standards to global levels through team visits and video-conferencing and lend its expertise to upgrade their research component. An HMS delegation will visit the State and sign a Memorandum of Understanding with university.

Meanwhile, NTRUHS has set afloat the process of taking help from New York-based Cornell University for setting up a Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) laboratory. The lab will come in handy for the implementation of the Cadaver Transplantation Programme (CTP), also called ‘Jeevandan’, under which tissue-typing and cross-matching are done to ensure compatibility of organs.

NTRUHS Vice-Chancellor Mr. Ravi Raju told The Hindu that both the initiatives (agreements with HMS and Cornell University) were in advanced stages, and that NTRUHS would be one of the few medical universities to strike it big with world renowned institutions.

The HLA laboratory is likely to come up at NTRUHS or at the upcoming Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences.

Loss of affiliation threat to dental hub

Patna Dental College and Hospital has landed itself in a soup again with the Dental Council of India pointing out various anomalies regarding the college in a report sent to the institution last week.

Sources from the hospital said the college might lose its affiliation if the council decides to take action based on the report. At a time when the Medical Council of India's sword is already hanging on the state-run medical colleges because of lack of infrastructure to run MBBS courses, the dental council's report has come as a shocker for the state government.

The council had pointed out anomalies in the college's infrastructure in some of its previous visits too.

Patna Dental College principal S.N. Sinha said: "The council team came for a surprise inspection to the college on May 30. They have sent us a report, in which they have pointed out many deficiencies such as lack of faculty, operating tables, necessary instruments and library books. The team had questioned why our college did not have a full time principal. At present, I am the principal of Patna Medical College with the additional charge the dental college."

He said the college would try to fill in the deficiencies at the earliest.

"The executive body of the council would hold a meeting on June 12, in which the final decision regarding the college would be taken. We have recently hired teachers on the basis of contract. Other deficiencies are also being looked into," he added.

Sources said it would be tough task for the college to convince the council of the problems at the state-run college.

"The X-ray facility is not available for the last two years. The technician, who used to operate it, expired and no one was recruited after that. Patients, who get root-canal treatments, among others, need to get X-rays done. We are forced to ask them to get it done from outside," said a doctor at the college, on condition of anonymity.

Sources said the surgery department of the college lacks anaesthetists because of which hospital avoids major dental surgeries.

Second Phase of Medical Counselling Ends at Saveetha

CHENNAI:The second phase of medical counselling for MBBS courses in Saveetha University/Medical college for the academic year 2015 concluded on Monday. Candidates selected from Uni-GAUGE EMeD 2015 merit list were admitted to medical Seats in Saveetha Medical College. University chancellor NM Veeraiyan, vice-chancellor Mythily Bhaskaran and registrar Prabhavathy and university director of academics Deepak Nallaswamy were present at the session.

“It’s unfortunate that many people have been cheated and lost lakhs of rupees to the agents, in spite of our warning that all admissions to the MBBS course are based only on merit. Beware of these agents. If anyone promises admission on basis other than merit, please inform the admission office,” Veeraiyan said.

பணி நேரம் முடிந்ததால் விமானத்தை இயக்க விமானி மறுப்பு: 10 மணி நேரம் பயணிகள் காத்திருப்பு

கோவையில் பணி நேரம் முடிந்ததாகக் கூறி, புதன்கிழமை இரவு தனியார் விமானத்தின் விமானி, அந்த விமானத்தை இயக்க மறுத்ததால் 10 மணி நேரத்துக்கும் மேலாக காத்திருந்த பயணிகள், அடுத்த நாள் காலை வேறு விமானம் மூலமாக சென்னைக்கு புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றனர்.
பெங்களூரில் இருந்து நாள்தோறும் ஜெட் ஏர்வேஸ் தனியார் விமானம் இரவு 9.45 மணியளவில் கோவை விமான நிலையம் வந்தடையும். பின்னர், இங்கிருந்து இரவு 10.10 மணியளவில் புறப்பட்டு சென்னை சென்றடையும்.
இந்நிலையில், தொழில்நுட்பக் கோளாறு காரணமாக பெங்களூருவில் இருந்து அந்த விமானம் புதன்கிழமை இரவு 10.10 மணியளவில் புறப்பட்டு, இரவு 11.10 மணியளவில் கோவை விமான நிலையம் வந்தடைந்தது. கோவையில் இறங்க வேண்டிய பயணிகள் மட்டும் இறங்கியுள்ளனர். சென்னைக்கு செல்ல வேண்டிய 45 பயணிகள் விமானத்தில் காத்திருந்திருந்தனர்.
அப்போது விமானி, பணி நேரம் முடிந்துவிட்டதாகக் கூறி, விமானத்தை இயக்க மறுத்து, ஓய்வு அறைக்கு சென்றுவிட்டாராம். விமானத்தில் நீண்ட நேரமாகக் காத்திருந்த பயணிகள் விமானம் புறப்படாதது குறித்து விமான ஊழியர்களிடம் கேள்வி எழுப்பினர். விமானத்தை இயக்க விமானி மறுத்து விட்டதாக ஊழியர்கள் பயணிகளிடம் தெரிவித்தனர். இதனால், 15 பயணிகள் தங்களது பயணத்தை ரத்து செய்துவிட்டனர். மீதமுள்ள 30 பயணிகள் கோவையில் உள்ள தனியார் ஹோட்டலில் விமான நிர்வாகம் சார்பில் தங்க வைக்கப்பட்டனர்.
பத்து மணி நேரம் காத்திருப்புக்கு பின் வியாழக்கிழமை காலை 8.30 மணியளவில் வேறு விமானம் மூலம் பயணிகள் சென்னைக்கு புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றனர்.

Hold counselling but don't promise medical seats: HC

CHENNAI: Ambiguity over smooth conduct of MBBS counseling this year continued on Thursday, with the Madras high court asking why it should not direct the authorities not to issue admit cards to students selected for the course. The six-day counselling for MBBS admissions in the state begins on Friday. A division bench headed by Justice Satish K Agnihotri also observed that authorities cannot give any assurance to the students participating in the counselling.

As the bench sought to either stay or put a rider to the counselling process, when a petition filed by nearly 70 Class 12 students of the 2015 batch came up for hearing, special government pleader D Krishna Kumar opposed any interim order that would disrupt the counselling. He sought time till Friday to submit the government's views. The petition wanted the court to prevent students of previous batches from taking part in the counseling.

The court proceedings have put a question mark on the counselling process involving more than 31,000 students. Students of the 2015 batch say that taking advantage of low cutoff marks this year, 4,679 students from previous batches have applied for MBBS seats. Expressing apprehensions that nearly 50% of the seats on offer could be garnered by the previous batch candidates, counsel V Raghavachari said it would wreak havoc with the lives of students from the fresh batch.

That the 2014 batch saw 5,055 centum scorers in core subjects of physics, chemistry and biology, and the year 2015 saw only 1,560 centum scorers would give an indication of the magnitude of the cutoff disparity, adversely affecting all categories of students this year.

TOI has been writing about the brewing trouble involving previous and present batches of Class 12 students in securing MBBS seats for about a week now. The issue has reached a boiling point, as though there is no bar on commencing and continuing the counselling, authorities may not be able to issue admission cards on the spot while the case is being argued in court.

In their joint appeal, the latest batch students said allowing candidates from previous years to compete with them would result in treating unequals as equals. Referring to a single judge order saying the participation of previous year students in counselling this year would be subject to the outcome of the writ petition, they said the order failed to quell the controversy. On the other hand, it conferred right on ineligible ones to claim equity, they said.

It cannot be said there is uniformity in setting up of the papers or in its valuation, the petitioners said, adding that the total number of MBBS seats available this year is 2,808. The number of students from previous years is 4,679. "A sizable numbers of students who wrote the examination in 2014-15 are likely to be kept away from the process of selection to the professional course,"their petition said.

Referring to publication of random numbers for MBBS/BDS admission, the students said it showed that a majority of students from previous academic years would topple the 2015 batch students during MBBS counselling. "Proceeding with the counselling without determining the issue on hand would cause hardship to all participants as well as the state,"they said, justifying their appeal against the single judge order.

Singapore Airlines ranked second best in the world

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Airlines (SIA) was named the world's second best at the Paris Airshow on Tuesday (Jun 16). The award was given out by Skytrax, a consultancy and reviews site.

The Airline of the Year award was given to Qatar Airways. SIA gained one spot from last year to be ranked second, coming in ahead of last year's winner, Cathay Pacific Airways.

SIA also clinched other awards. It was voted Best Business Class Airline overall, as well as Best First Class Seats. Additionally, SIA's First and Economy Class categories both made it to the second spot on their respective lists.

The cabins of Singapore's national carrier were rated the second cleanest in the world behind EVA Air, while its cabin staff were named third best behind Garuda Indonesia and Cathay Pacific.
