Swathi murder accused Ramkumar commits suicide, says police

CHENNAI: P Ramkumar, the accused in the murder of Infosys techie Swathi, allegedly committed suicide in the Puzhal prison on Sunday, police sources said. He was rushed to the Royapettah government hospital, where he was declared dead.

Prison sources said Ramkumar climbed up and managed to touch the live wire in the high security prison cell at around 4.30 pm. None were present in the cell when the alleged suicide took place. Security guards later rushed and tried to rescue him after disconnecting the power supply. But it is said he succumbed on the spot and doctors at the Royapettah Government hospital declared him dead on arrival.

An official from the hospital said, "Ramkumar was brought here at around 5.40 pm and we found that he had already succumbed." He also added that the autopsy would be conducted only tomorrow.

As per law, the prison officials will now have to file a complaint in the local police station on the death and the case will be referred to a judicial magistrate. The autopsy will be conducted in the presence of the judicial magistrate and is expected to take place on Monday. Parents and close relatives of the deceased will be allowed to see the body only the presence of the magistrate, police sources said.

Ramkumar, the youth hailing from a village in the southern district of Tirunelveli, was arrested after the major manhunt in recent years in the state.

According to police, Ramkumar slayed Swathi to death on morning of June 24 at Nungambakkam railway station as she was waiting to board train for her office. Even when he was arrested on July 1 night from the village he allegedly attempted suicide by slitting throat.

'There was no sign of suicidal tendencies'

As the news of Ramkumar's death spread, Advocate Ramraj, the defense counsel of Ramkumar, expressed his shock and was quoted saying to a news channel that, "I spoke to him for an hour even yesterday. He did not show signs of suicidal tendencies and was in a healthy state of mind. The prison officials are responsible for his death."

Incidentally, Ramkumar was to be produced before a judicial magistrate court on Monday as his judicial custody comes to an end. As per routine, the custody would be extended for 15 more days, unless he is given bail.

An assistant of advocate Ramraj confirmed that on Saturday Ramraj visited Ramkumar in the prison and spoke to him for an hour from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Thol Thirumavalavan, President of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), said that he had met the Ramkumar's family who had claimed that Ramkumar was not involved in the murder. "There is suspicion in his death. Earlier, when his parents and lawyer met him, he said that he was not involved in this murder. The Tamil Nadu Government has to take the responsibility and should clarify the suspicion behind Ramkumar's death."

Ramkumar bit a live wire and fainted, prison warders rushed him to the jail hospital where his pulse started dropping fast.

P. Ramkumar, the lone suspect in the Swathi murder case, allegedly committed suicide by getting hold of a live wire at the Puzhal central prison complex here on Sunday evening.

Preliminary reports said the suspect bit a live electric cable that was concealed in a switch board. At the time of his arrest, Ramkumar had attempted to kill himself by slitting his throat but was saved.

Ramkumar is alleged to be the assailant of techie Swathi who was hacked to death in the Numgambakkam railway station when she was waiting to board a suburban train on June 24 this year.

Based on CCTV footage and other circumstantial and material evidence, the Chennai Police arrested Ramkumar, an engineering college dropout, from his native village near Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district.

“Since Ramkumar had attempted to commit suicide at the time of his arrest, we arranged counselling at the Puzhal prison where he was remanded in judicial custody. We kept a close watch on his activities. He did not show any signs of depression or suicidal tendencies,” a prison official told The Hindu.

On information that he had bit a live wire and fainted, prison warders rushed him to the jail hospital where his pulse started dropping fast.


Ramkumar was taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police sources said.

The sensational murder of Swathi, an Infosys employee, triggered instant public outrage and condemnation from the civil society.

Though investigators claimed that CCTV footage showed the suspect escaping from the scene of crime and further investigation led to recovery of his blood stained clothes and the mobile phone of the victim (Swathi) from his possession, Ramkumar's family and some human rights activists alleged that he was not involved in the murder and there was more to the case than meets the eye.

Ramkumar, who was staying in a mansion at Choolaimedu and looking for a job, reportedly stalked Swathi. Eyewitnesses in the case recalled having seen him follow the victim to Paranur railway station close to her work place.

Family members of Ramkumar suspected foul play in his death. It was not clear immediately whether any other prisoner was witness to Ramkumar snatching the electric wire out of the switch board to biting it.

Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) Vijay Kumar said jail authorities arranged first aid shifted him to the Government Royapettah Hospital when his condition deteriorated. “We are investigating the circumstances that led to the prisoner taking the extreme step,” he said.

Deemed universities offering MBBS told to use Neet

The University Grants Commission (UGC) directed all deemed universities offering MBBS and BDS programmes on Friday to admit students based on the all-India merit list of the National Eligibility Entrance Test (Neet).

The educational institutions have also been asked to participate in the common counselling, for admission to medical courses, conducted either by the respective state governments or the Central government after the declaration of the Neet results.

In a notification to all deemed universities, the UGC said that if the state government is unable to hold the common counselling, or the deemed universities offering MBBS or BDS were not covered in the counselling, they would have to put up a common system of admission.

“In the case of medical colleges, the Medical Council of India is the appropriate statutory authority. As such, all the admissions in the medical institutes of institutions deemed to be universities have to be made through Neet, which is prescribed by the Medical Council of India for such institutions,” UGC deputy secretary Sunita Siwach said in the notice. The notice also said, “In case the appropriate statutory authority has specified the process of selection for admission to any course or programme of study in any institution which includes conducting competitive admission test for ascertaining the competence of any person to pursue such course, in that case, no person shall be admitted to such programme in such institution, except through an admission test conducted by a recognised body or such institution or a group of institutions which has been authorised by the Central government or a state government or any statutory authority.” The UGC made it clear that all admissions were subject to the aforesaid stipulations and compliance.

Physiotherapist' who prescribes drugs held

Chennai: As the crackdown on quacks continued in Tiruvallur, more skeletons came tumbling out after officials caught a 'physiotherapist' prescribing drugs and a doctor-couple using an illegal machine to conduct ultrasound in the district on Thursday.

For the past three weeks, public health officials had been conducting inspections at clinics across Tiruvallur in the wake of an outbreak of a mix of viral and bacterial infections in some pockets.

On Thursday, officials nabbed a 35-year-old man, who claimed to be a physiotherapist, for prescribing drugs and administering injections, fromMadharapakkam in Gummidipoondi. The man, identified as Nasser, had been practising for close to a month.

"When we questioned him, he said he was hired by a qualified doctor," said D Mohanan, joint health director of health, Tiruvallur.

In the same village, officials caught a doctor-couple with an unregistered scanning machine under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, which bans prenatal sex determination. The couple will be called in for questioning on Friday.

Since the beginning of August, around 21 quacks were caught by public health officials in the district, most of whom are now out on bail.

71-year-old man faints on train, ignored for 16 hours

Chennai: Call it the weariness of the urban commuters or a callous overlook a 71-year-old man travelling on Kovai Express on Wednesday is battling for life after lying unattended for more than 16 hours in the rake's passageway in front of a toilet.

Due to get down at Erode after boarding from Chennai, MVenkatachalam lay on the floor of the train even as it made its return journey to Chennai from Coimbatore the same day.

Neither railway staff nor co-passenger came to his rescue. Lying between the two toilets in D9 coach, Venkatachalam came to the notice of a travelling ticket examiner, Nihal Singh near Tirupur, when he found Venkatachalam's phone ringing repeatedly but going unattended. The calls were being made by his sons fromMogappair in Chennai when the train was on its return leg.

Around 10:30pm at Chennai Central, Venkatachalam's family was shocked to find him lying in front of the toilets with a bleeding nose and rushed him to the Apollo emergency medical care. He was later shifted to Billroth hospital where he is in the ICU.

What has shocked Venkatachalam's sons is that no railway staff or TTE or cleaning staff or co-passenger came to his aid while he was lying right outside toilet all the time. "He must have been mistaken for a beggar or a drunkard. People actually stomped on him while going to the toilet. My father was dressed in a sparkling white shirt and veshti, but it seems to have been used for people to clear their footwear after coming out of the toilets," said his son V Umaanath, a media executive.

Umaanath had packed breakfast for Venkatachalam and it was lying intact even after 16 hours. He had informed his wife that he would come home for lunch. But Tuesday night's dinner was the last meal he had for more than 24 hours.

A Southern Railway spokesperson said Kovai Express is checked by maintenance staff at Coimbatore station before it begins return journey. Railway Protection Force officers said finding unconscious people in toilet at Egmore station or yard is a regular affair for them . "It is a sorry state of affairs. Any attentive TTE or cleaning staff could have spotted my father and he could have been admitted to a hospital at least 8-9 hours earlier. There is a separate marking for senior citizens on the reservation chart and the railway staff could have given some special attention," Umaanath said.

Venkatachalam had the usual age-related ailments like low blood pressure but staying without food for more than 24 hours might have put him under immense stress, Umaanath said.

எம்.ஆர். ராதா நாடக மேடைகளில் வாழ்ந்தவர். ஆனால் நிஜ வாழ்க்கையில் ஒருபோதும் நடித்திராதவர். நாடகக்காரர், பகுத்தறிவுவாதி, சினிமா நடிகர், பெரியாரின் தொண்டர், அதிரடிப் பேச்சாளார், குடும்பத் தலைவர், சிறைச்சாலைக் கைதி என்று அவருடைய வாழ்க்கையில் ஏகப்பட்ட பாத்திரங்கள். ஆனால் எதிலுமே அவர் அரிதாரம் பூசியதில்லை. ராதா, ராதாவாகவே வாழ்ந்தார்.

தமிழ் நாடகத் துறைக்கு அவர் செய்திருக்கும் பங்களிப்பு மிகப்பெரியது. தமிழகத்தில் நாடகங்களின் பொற்காலத்தில் ‘நாடக உலக சூப்பர் ஸ்டாராக’ வலம் வந்தவர் எம்.ஆர். ராதாவே. அவரது நாடக உலக வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து சில பகுதிகள் இங்கே.

'பதிபக்தி' என்ற நாடகத்தில் எம்.ஆர். ராதாவுக்கு சி.ஐ.டி வேடம். ஒரு மோட்டார் சைக்கிளிலேயே மேடைக்கு வருவார் ராதா. மக்கள் மேல் பாய்ந்துவிடுவதுபோல மேடையின் ஓரம்வரை வேகமாக ஓட்டிக்கொண்டு வந்து, லாகவமாக பிரேக் பிடித்து அரை வட்டமடித்து நிற்பார். கைதட்டல், விசில்கள் பறக்கும். இப்படிச் சின்னச் சின்ன விஷயங்களால் ராதா பிரபலமடையத் தொடங்கினார். ராதா மேடையேறினாலே மக்களின் ஆரவாரம் அடங்க வெகு நேரம் பிடித்தது.

நாடகத்தில் போலீஸ் வருவதுபோல காட்சி இருக்கும். அப்போது ராதா உடன் நடிப்பவர் பயப்படுவதுபோல நடிப்பார். உடனே ராதா வசனம் பேசுவார். 'ஏன்டா பயப்படுறே? போலீஸ்னா என்ன பெரிய கொம்பா? (ரசிகர்களைப் பார்த்து கைநீட்டி) எல்லாம் ஓசி டிக்கெட்ல முன்னாடி உட்கார்ந்திருக்கான் பாரு. காசு கொடுத்தவன்லாம் பின்னாடி உட்கார்ந்திருக்கான்.' ராதாவின் இந்த நக்கல் தாங்காமல், ஓசி டிக்கெட்டில் வந்தவர்கள் எழுந்து செல்வதும் உண்டு.

சேலத்தில் ஓரியண்டல் தியேட்டர்ஸ் நடத்திய ‘இழந்த காதல்' நாடகப் போஸ்டர்களில் 'எம்.ஆர். ராதாவின் சவுக்கடி ஸீனைக் காணத் தவறாதீர்கள்' என்று விளம்பரப்படுத்தப்பட்டது. அந்தக் காட்சி அவ்வளவு பிரபலம். காரணம், நாடகம் என்றாலே நடிகர்கள் மேடையிலே நின்றபடி ரசிகர்களைப் பார்த்துத்தான் பேச வேண்டும். முதுகைக் காட்டியபடி ஒரு வசனம்கூட பேசக்கூடாதென்பதே நாடக இலக்கணம். ஆனால் 'இழந்த காதல்' இறுதிக் காட்சியில் ராதா, கதாநாயகியைப் பிடித்து நாற்காலியில் தள்ளுவார். தன் இரண்டு கைகளையும் நாற்காலியில் ஊன்றியபடி கதாநாயகியிடம் பேச ஆரம்பிப்பார். பதினைந்து நிமிட வசனம். பதினைந்து நிமிடங்களும் ரசிகர்கள் அவரது முதுகைத்தான் பார்க்க முடியும். முகபாவனைகளை, கைகளின் அசைவினைக் காண முடியாது. இருந்தாலும் ரசிகர்கள் அதனை ஆரவாரமாக ரசித்தார்கள். சுருண்டு கிடக்கும் அவரது தலைமுடிகூட அங்கே நடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது.

நாடகம் தொடங்குவதற்கு முன்பு பூஜை செய்வது என்பது பொதுவான பழக்கம். ஆனால் ராதா, தமிழ்த்தாய் வாழ்த்துபாடி தொடங்குவார். ராதா நாடகத்துறைக்குள் நுழைந்த காலத்தில் மைக் எல்லாம் கிடையாது. கடைசி வரிசையில் உட்கார்ந்திருக்கும் ரசிகனுக்கும் வசனம் கேட்கும் வகையில் தொண்டை கிழிய கத்தித்தான் பேச வேண்டியதிருந்தது. எனவே ஒவ்வொரு இரவும் நாடகம் முடிந்தபிறகும் ராதா, மேக்கப் அறைக்குள் வருவார்.

ஒரு பெரிய குண்டா அவருக்காகக் காத்திருக்கும். வாயை மட்டும் நீரால் துடைத்துவிட்டு உட்காருவார். குண்டாவில் பாதி அளவுக்குப் பழைய சோறு, மீதி அளவுக்குச் சிறு வெங்காயம் நிரம்பியிருக்கும். அவ்வளவையும் மிச்சம் வைக்காமல் சாப்பிடுவார். மற்றவர்கள் என்றால் நள்ளிரவில் பழையதும் சின்ன வெங்காயமும் சாப்பிட்டால் ஜன்னி வந்துவிடும். ஆனால் மேடையில் தன் சக்தியை எல்லாம் பிரயோகித்து நடித்துவிட்டு வந்த பின் அந்த உணவு ராதாவுக்குத் தேவையானதாகவே இருந்தது. அவரது குழுவிலிருந்த சிறுவர்களுக்கு, ராதாவுக்காக வெங்காயம் உரிப்பதுவும் முக்கியமான வேலையாக இருந்தது.

நாடகத்துக்கான வசனங்களை ராதா உள்வாங்கிக் கொள்ளும் விதமே அலாதியானது. ‘அறிவு, ஆரம்பிக்கலாமா?' கேட்டுவிட்டு நாற்காலியில் சாய்ந்து கண்களை மூடி உட்கார்ந்து கொள்ளுவார் ராதா. அவரது குழுவிலிருந்த அறிவானந்தம் என்ற சிறுவன் வசனங்களை வாசிக்க ஆரம்பிப்பான். ராதாவிடமிருந்து பதிலோ, அசைவோ இருக்காது. அவர் தூங்கி விட்டாரோ என்று நினைத்து அறிவு நிறுத்துவான்.

‘ம்..' என்று குரல் கொடுப்பார் ராதா. இப்படி வசனங்களை தொடர்ந்து மூன்று நாள்கள் வாசித்தால் போதும். அதற்குப் பின் ராதாவுக்குப் பாடம் தேவையில்லை. அவரது ஞாபக சக்தி அந்த அளவுக்கு அபாரமானது.

ராதா அரங்கேற்றியதில் அதிக சர்ச்சைகளை உண்டாக்கிய நாடகம் ராமாயணம். ராதாவுக்காக நாடகத் தடை மசோதாவை சட்டமன்றத்தில் சட்டமாக நிறைவேற்றுமளவு பிரச்னை வலுத்தது. அதை மீறியும் ராமாயணத்தை பலமுறை வெற்றிகரமாக அரங்கேற்றினார் ராதா. மதுரையில் அன்று மாலை ராமாயணம் நாடகம் என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. நாடகத்தை எப்படி நடத்துகிறாய் என்று பார்க்கிறேன் என்று பகிரங்க மிரட்டல் விடுத்தார் அணுகுண்டு அய்யாவு என்பவர்.

நாடகம் ஆரம்பமானது. அரங்கத்தினுள் சில ரவுடிகளுடன் புகுந்து கலகம் செய்ய ஆரம்பித்தார் அய்யாவு. ராதா, தன் குழுவிலுள்ள பெண்களையும் சிறுவர்களையும் மட்டும் பத்திரமாக வண்டியேற்றி அங்கிருந்து அனுப்பினார். பின்னர் கோதாவில் குதித்தார்.

‘டேய் அந்த ரிவால்வரை எடுடா. குண்டு ஃபுல்லா இருக்கா? ஆறு குண்டு ஆறு பேரு. சுட்டுத் தள்ளிடறேன்' - அரங்கம் அதிரக் கத்தினார். யாருக்கும் ரிவால்வர் இருக்கிறதா என்று கூடத் தெரியாது. ஆனால் அய்யாவு கும்பல் பயந்து சிதறி ஓடியது.

அன்றைய வசூல் தொகை மூவாயிரம் ரூபாய்.

தனது நாடகக் குழுவினருக்கு வாரத்தில் மூன்று நாள்களாவது அசைவம் போட வேண்டுமென்பது ராதாவின் கட்டளை. நேரம் கிடைக்கும்போதேல்லாம் குழுவினருக்கு மட்டன் சமைப்பதில் ஆர்வம் காட்டுவார் ராதா. அவர் சமையலில் எம்டன். தன் குழுவினருக்கு தானே உணவு பரிமாறுவதிலும் ஆர்வம் காட்டுவார். அவரது குழுவில் சுத்த சைவ பார்ட்டிகளும் இருந்தார்கள். அவர்களுக்குத் தனிப்பந்தி நடைபெறும். அப்போது ராதா அடிக்கும் கமெண்ட், ‘அவங்க எல்லாம் தீண்டத்தகாதவங்க. தனியா உட்கார்ந்து சாப்பிடட்டும்.'

தன்னுடைய எம்.ஆர். ராதா நாடக மன்றத்திலிருந்து யாராவது விலகிச் செல்லும்போது, அவர்கள் நினைத்துப் பார்க்க முடியாத பெருந்தொகையை கொடுத்து வாழ்த்தி வழியனுப்புவது ராதாவின் பழக்கமாக இருந்தது.

காளிமார்க் சோடா கம்பெனி நடத்தி வந்த பரமசிவம், ‘எம்.ஆர். ராதா சோடா' என்று ஒரு தனி பிராண்ட் போட்டு விற்குமளவுக்கு தமிழ்நாடெங்கும் நாடகங்கள் மூலம் ராதாவின் புகழ் பரவியது. குறிப்பாக ரத்தக் கண்ணீர். தன் வாழ்நாளில் மட்டும் ராதா, புதிய புதிய காட்சிகளுடன், புத்தம் புதிய வசனங்களுடன் கிட்டத்தட்ட ஐயாயிரம் முறைக்கும் மேல் 'ரத்தக் கண்ணீர்' நாடகத்தை மேடையேற்றியிருக்கிறார்.

அந்தக் காலத்தில் நவாப் ராஜமாணிக்கம் கம்பெனி நாடக செட்டுகளுக்காகவே மக்கள் பார்க்க வருவார்கள். பெரிய பாம்பு, பிளக்கும் கடல், சிருங்கார அரண்மனை, பிரம்மாண்ட தேவலோகம் என்று அசர வைத்தார்கள் மக்களை. ஆனால் ராதா அதற்கு நேர் எதிர். நீலநிறப் படுதா, அதில் காடு என்றிருக்கும். காட்சி மாறும். சிவப்பு நிற படுதா, அதில் வீடு என்று இருக்கும். அடுத்து பச்சை நிறப் படுதா. அதில் பொது இடம் என்றிருக்கும். மற்றபடி எந்த செட்டிங்கும் கிடையாது. மக்கள் படுதாவைப் பார்த்து எங்கு காட்சி நடக்கிறது என்று புரிந்துகொண்டு ரசிப்பார்கள்.

‘மக்கள் என் நடிப்பைத்தான் பார்க்க வர்றாங்களே தவிர செட்டிங்கை இல்லே' என்பார் ராதா.

1979, செப்டெம்பர் 17-ல் திராவிடர் கழகத்தினர் பெரியாரின் நூற்றாண்டு நிறைவு விழாவைக் கொண்டாடிக் கொண்டிருந்த சமயத்தில் திருச்சி சங்கிலியாண்டபுரத்தில் மஞ்சள் காமாலை முற்றி உயிரை இழந்தார் எம்.ஆர். ராதா.

திரையுலகத்தினர், அரசியல் பிரமுகர்கள், நாடகக் கலைஞர்கள், பொதுமக்கள் என லட்சக்கணக்கானோர் இறுதி மரியாதை செலுத்தினார்கள். சங்கிலியாண்டபுரம் வீட்டிலிருந்து ராதாவின் இறுதி ஊர்வலம் காவேரிக்கரை ஓயாமாரி இடுகாடு நோக்கிக் கிளம்பியது. வழிநெடுக சுவர்களில் அன்று நடைபெறவிருந்த 'ரத்தக்கண்ணீர்' நாடகத்துக்கான போஸ்டர்கள் ஒட்டப்பட்டிருந்தன.
