Mixed reaction from AIADMK cadre

Even as celebrations in support of Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam poured in from different parts of the district on Wednesday, a group of AIADMK cadre burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister.

Protesting against the accusation made by him against the party general secretary V.K. Sasikala, protesters led by Raja Raja Cholan burnt the effigy near the MGR statue at Cantonment. They raised slogans against Mr. Panneerselvam. The police rushed to the spot and arrested 13 cadre. Similarly, 13 more persons were arrested in Srirangam for burning effigy.

However, all of them were released in the evening.

Meanwhile, celebrations erupted in different parts of the district in praise of Mr. Panneerselvam, who revolted against Ms. Sasikala. The AIADMK party men, who were supporting former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s niece J. Deepa, burst crackers in Srirangam, Woraiyur, Palakkarai and other places. They distributed sweets.

Similarly, Deepa supporters, who thronged main streets at Manaparai, Thuraiyur, Lalgudi, Samayapuram and other rural areas, expressed joy by bursting crackers.

Almost all party MLAs from Madurai, Virudhunagar support Sasikala

Manickam is the lone MLA to back Pannerselvam

K. Manickam, representing the Sholavandan (Reserved) Assembly constituency, is the only MLA among the eight of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from Madurai district to pledge support to Chief Minister O. Pannerselvam.

Mr. Manickam, along with former MLA (Tirumangalam) and former rural district secretary, M. Muthuramalingam, was with Mr. Pannerselvam at the Chief Minister’s residence in Chennai on Wednesday.

Mr. Muthuramalingam said that those who had real affection for late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa were supporting Mr. Pannerselvam, who had promised to protect the party and continue the good work of Jayalalithaa. “The other group is bent upon ruining the AIADMK,” he added.

However, six other party MLAs from the district, including Ministers K. Raju, and R.B. Udhayakumar, and rural district secretary and Madurai North MLA V.V. Rajan Chellappa, are in Sasikala camp.

“Our stand is that only if both the posts of general secretary and Chief Minister are held by the same person, the party can be protected and can serve the people in a better way,” Mr. Chellappa said.

Minister for Dairy Development K. T. Rajenthra Bhalaji, Virudhunagar district secretary, also backed general secretary Sasikala. Mr. Bhalaji said that all the three AIADMK MLAs of the district were in Sasikala camp. “Even the Virudhunagar MP, T. Radhakrishnan, is in our our camp,” he added.

UGC: Universities need to review curricula every three years

Are our universities producing graduates who have the skills to adapt to the evolving and changing demands of the real world?

In order to ensure that students are equipped with skills relevant to the sector that they will specialise in, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed all universities to ensure that the curriculum of each and every academic department is reviewed at least once every three years.

The UGC has said that the decision was taken during a meeting that was chaired by the Prime Minister, with secretaries of education and social development.

In a circular issued to Vice-Chancellors of universities, the UGC stated that the review and the revision of the academic curricula should “focus on the existing and potential demand and supply of skill sets to make University/college students employable”. This instruction needs to be adopted by individual universities and colleges affiliated to it.

The circular also noted that interdisciplinary programmes offered by the university can be complemented through a “robust” mechanism of revisiting and revising the curricula at regular intervals. Student organisations have welcomed the move, but point out that there is a need to ensure that teacher training is on a par with this. “Very often, although the syllabus changes, the method of teaching by many of our teachers is still obsolete and not on a par with industry requirements,” said Krithika R., second-year B.Com student off a Bengaluru college.

Ravinandan B.B., State vice-president, All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation, said the move will help students stay up-to-date with the changes in the economy and advancements in science and technology. “The revision should be done in consultation with academic councils of the universities and the UGC should not push any changes,” he said.

A day after Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam revolted against the ruling AIADMK leadership, the battle lines were drawn in the rival camps with a majority of legislators, MPs and party office-bearers rallying behind general secretary V.K. Sasikala, and the former drawing support from five legislators, a Rajya Sabha MP and some former ministers and functionaries.

Separately, Mr. Panneerselvam announced that he would institute a judicial inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the Madras High Court to probe into the treatment administered to former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

After a meeting of the AIADMK legislators at the party office, the Sasikala camp herded its MLAs, numbering over 125, in a luxury bus and took them to the house of Public Works Department Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Greenways Road.

In the evening, the legislators and party MPs were taken to the Chennai airport to be flown to New Delhi and ostensibly paraded before the President Pranab Mukherjee. However, shortly before they could board their flights, they were asked to return after it became known that Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao would be returning to Chennai from Mumbai on Thursday evening.

While the Sasikala camp claimed that 130 of the 135 AIADMK legislators had attended the meeting chaired by her, Mr. Panneerselvam who initially had the support of just two MLAs, later received the backing of three other legislators as the day progressed.

Will win floor test: CM

Claiming that more legislators were in touch with him, the Chief Minister said he was confident of proving his majority on the floor of the Legislative Assembly.

“The MLAs are in touch with me,” he said, adding, “I appeal to all the MLAs. They must understand and reflect what people think and feel in their respective constituencies. Everything has a limit. If things cross a limit, MLAs have to reflect the people’s sentiments. If not, it will be a betrayal of people’s trust.” He also invited Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar to join him.

He also challenged Ms. Sasikala’s appointment as the party’s general secretary. “According to the party’s constitution, only the party cadres can vote and elect a ‘General Secretary’. If there is an extraordinary situation and the party is forced to elect a general secretary, then the executive and general body can select a temporary general secretary until a permanent general secretary is elected. This is the law,” he said.

Categorically denying the allegations that he is acting against the party’s high command at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre, he said the AIADMK will speak against the Centre if the State’s rights are denied.

“No matter who is ruling at the Centre, the AIADMK will speak against it when the State’s rights are being denied. We will support the Centre if it supports us,” he said. He underlined that the support is not for an individual named O. Panneerselvam, but for the State government. Talking about how former chief minister Jayalalithaa acknowledged his rise from the grassroots, he said, “She also appointed me as a CM twice. I have never betrayed Jayalalithaa or the party.”
