Only 1.80 lakh kids immunised

Target is 3.65 lakh for administration of measles-rubella vaccine

Against the target of 3.65 lakh children to be administered the measles-rubella vaccine, the Corporation of Madurai has just covered 1.80 lakh children.
Flagging off a rally from the Tamukkum Grounds to the Collectorate, students numbering over 300, from various nursing colleges displayed placards educating the public that the vaccine would not harm but rather be protective.
The public should not go by the social media posts as they were baseless. The Corporation doctors and para-medical staff said that the vaccine was necessary and there would not be any side effect as apprehended in the social media.
Hence, mothers should bring their children in the 9-15 age group to be administered the vaccine, they said and added that it would be safe to get the children administered the vaccine for which the government organised special camps.
The Deputy Commissioner (Corporation) S. Shanthi said the vaccine would protect the children from diseases. The Deputy Commissioner of Police Arun Sakti Kumar flagged off the rally. City Health Officer Satish Raghavan and others participated.

2,300 deposits under scanner

The Income Tax Department is pursuing about 2,300 cases in Coimbatore region that have been identified for making huge deposits during the demonetisation period.
Transactions
T.P. Krishna Kumar, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, and Principal Commissioner M. Tirumalakumar told reporters here on Friday that 18 lakh transactions made during the demonetisation period were identified as suspect ones across the country.
The region-wise details are shared in phases for the local officials of the IT department to pursue. In the first phase, about 2,300 cases found to have made huge deposits during November-December in Coimbatore, Tirupur, and the Nilgiris districts have been identified.
The department officials are asking for details from these depositors. If the response is not satisfactory, they are pursuing it with more action.
Surveys
In the last two weeks, more than 100 surveys have been conducted by the department officials in Coimbatore and Madurai regions.
The officials also explained about Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, a scheme introduced in December last year and will end with March 31.
Objective
“The objective of the scheme is to utilise the black money collected post-demonetisation phase to undertake anti-poverty and development works,” according to a press release.
Under the scheme, any person can make declaration of undisclosed income and pay 30% tax of the undisclosed income, apart from penalty and surcharge.
About 25% of the amount will be deposited under the scheme and it will not give any interest and will have a lock-in period of four years.
A declaration in the prescribed form is to be made, he said.
“The consequences will be severe for those who are found to have undisclosed income and have not declared it under the scheme,” said Mr. Tirumalakumar.
Mr. Krishnakumar added that the response so far has been good for the scheme, though he did not share details of number of persons who have opted for it in the region.
The revenue realisation of the department is also good this year, he added.

CPWD official takes bribe by cheque, lands in CBI net

He demanded Rs. 4 lakh from a Kochi-based construction firm

The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case against a top Central Public Works Department (CPWD) official here on charges of accepting a bribe by cheque from a builder. When one of the cheques bounced, the official asked the builder to transfer the money online into his wife’s bank account.
The CBI’s Anti Corruption Branch received information in December 2016 that R. Sampath, Deputy Director-General, Southern Region, CPWD, entered into a criminal conspiracy with M/s Shilpa Projects, Kochi, represented by Srikumar, with respect to a tender related to a CPWD project in Coimbatore.
The official allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 4 lakh from the builder. He received two cheques worth Rs. 1 lakh each and deposited them into the account of his wife. After one of the cheques bounced, Mr. Sampath insisted that Rs. 3 lakh be transferred electronically.
The official wanted the firm to account the bribe money as “consultancy charges” in the name of his wife. He insisted that her Permanent Account Number (PAN) be recorded and a proper bill for the consultancy charges be generated. The firm sent the bills by email and SMS to Mr. Sampath and his wife.
The CBI registered a case against the CPWD official, Mr. Srikumar and others under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The court was hearing a plea filed by Student Islamic Organisation seeking its direction to the government to prepare question papers also in Urdu for the benefit of Urdu-speaking students to take the test in their language. Some medical aspirants have also filed petition on the issue.

Nearly eight months after the Chennai police chargesheeted a doctor for trying to kill her 82year-old father -a heart patient on medical support in a city hospital ICU -by pulling the plug after getting his thumb impression on a set of papers, the doctor continues to practise medicine because officials of the Tamil Nadu Medical Council have not issued orders debarring her from practising. On Friday , a group of elected members said the disciplinary committee constituted by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council recommended that Coimbatore-based Dr Jayasudha Manoharan be debarred, but the order was pending as the general council wasn't able to meet. “There is a case pending on who should be president of the council. We are 10 members in the council and at least 7 have to approve any business. That has never happened,“ said former president K Prakasam, a member of the general council. In February 2016, Dr Jayasudha's brother Dr R Jayaprakash lodged a complaint saying she tried to kill their father Dr E Rajagopal.
He also submitted CCTV footage showing her visiting Dr Rajagopal in Dr Jayaprakash's Aditya Hospital in Kilpauk, Chennai, removing a line delivering life-saving medicines through a vein in the neck.
“There are three more cases for which action is pending,“ he said. The term of the council ends in June. The committee has not met to set the ball rolling for the next election to be conducted by May .
