கொச்: கேரள மாநிலத்தைச் சேர்ந்த, 12 வயது சிறுவன், ஒரு பெண் குழந்தைக்கு தந்தையாகி உள்ளான். 

முதல்வர் பினராயி விஜயன் தலைமையிலான இடது ஜனநாயக முன்னணி கூட்டணி அரசு நடக்கும் கேரள மாநிலம் எர்ணாகுளத்தில், சமீபத்தில், 16 வயது சிறுமிக்கு பெண் குழந்தை பிறந்தது. அதைத் தொடர்ந்து, 'போஸ்கோ' எனப்படும் குழந்தைகளுக்கு எதிரான பாலியல் வன்முறை தடுப்புச் சட்டத்தின் கீழ் போலீசார் வழக்கு பதிவு செய்தனர். விசாரணையில், அந்த சிறுமி கர்ப்பமடைவதற்கு காரணம், 12 வயது சிறுவன் என்பது தெரியவந்தது. அதன்படி, அந்த, 12 வயது சிறுவன் மற்றும் குழந்தையின் ரத்த மாதிரிகள் மூலம் பரிசோதனைகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. அந்தக் குழந்தைக்கு அந்த சிறுவன் தான் தந்தை என்பதை டாக்டர்கள் உறுதி செய்துள்ளனர்.'பல்வேறு காரணங்களால், மிகவும் சிறு வயதிலேயே, சிறுவர்களும், சிறுமியரும், வயதுக்கு வருகின்றனர். ஆனால், மிகக் குறைந்த வயதிலேயே ஒரு சிறுவன் தந்தையாகி உள்ளது இப்போதுதான் கேள்விபடுகிறோம்' என, அச்சிறுவனை பரிசோதித்த டாக்டர்கள் கூறியுள்ளனர்.

இதனிடையில், இருவரும் இளம் வயதினர் என்பதால், போஸ்கோ சட்டத்தின் கீழ் வழக்கு பதிவு செய்துள்ள போலீசார், அடுத்து என்ன நடவடிக்கை எடுப்பது என்பது குறித்து, சட்ட நிபுணர்களுடன் ஆலோசித்து வருகின்றனர்.

High Court stays admissions to PG courses at St. John’s academy

Order was passed while hearing a petition questioning the process

The High Court of Karnataka has stayed all further admissions to postgraduate medical courses at St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru.

Also, the court stayed collection of fees from the candidates named in the provisional list for admission to the PG medical courses if the fee is yet to be collected, besides directing the academy to keep one seat of MD Paediatrics vacant.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Jayant M. Patel and Justice N.K. Sudhindrarao passed the interim order on a petition filed by Rachana Kishore Ubrangala, a MBBS graduate from Mangaluru who is an aspirant for a post-graduate course in the academy.

According to her petition, though she has secured higher marks in the NEET, she has not been considered in the provisional list while less meritorious students, as per the NEET result, were considered for admission.

The petition points out that the academy, instead of adhering to the Supreme Court approved selection criterion based on the NEET ranking as fixed by the Medical Council of India, has prescribed its own selection process, including practical test score and interview in addition to the NEET ranking.

The petition claims that the academy has no right to prescribe any additional criteria other than the one fixed by the MCI as per the law.

Following this, the bench said that “prima facie it appears that the MCI regulations provide for the NEET ranking, and such criteria will be diluted if any other marks are considered, like practical test, interview etc.”

Meanwhile, the Bench prima facie found ‘objectionable’ a notice put out on the academy’s website by its director, a copy of which was produced before the court. It directed the director of the academy to be personally present in the court on March 23.

In the notice, the academy has said that it is approaching the High Court to have ‘St. John’s PG admissions 2017-18 declared valid on several legal grounds’ against a March 11 letter from the Directorate of Medical Education, which had suggested that the process is ‘invalid’.

“St. John’s is confident of getting a favourable verdict from the High Court validating its PG admissions for 2017-18,” the director has stated in the notice.

Now, ‘Auto Anna’ to launch app for travellers

Passengers going to railway stations can use it to order food; Anna Durai also exploring other features

The metro’s popular auto driver Anna Durai will be launching a new app this year.

“Customers using this app will be charged as per meter for the ride. You may ask what’s new about this. My model will be different,” says the 32-year-old Anna Durai fondly called ‘Auto Anna’ by commuters who know him well.

“For instance, passengers travelling to railway stations can use the app to order food. We will have the food ready. The passenger can pick it up on the way. There are many other features we are working on. Any auto driver can register and join this network,” he says.

A team of five, including students, is helping the auto driver design the app. Anna Durai has done extensive research on the branding and marketing aspects for the app.

“I’m looking at word-of-mouth and social media marketing,” he says. “The market is huge in Chennai, and not many look at this as a career-option. My aim is to make this a career for many.”

Anna Durai is going around OMR belt talking to auto drivers about the new app.

This auto driver became the talk of OMR-Thiruvanmiyur area for keeping newspapers, magazines and gadgets in his vehicle. Payments post-ride can be made through cash, Paytm or M-Visa. “During demonetisation, 90 per cent of the transactions were digitally made. I had money in my account but not in my wallet,” he recalls.

Free rides for techies

Driving three to four hours, Anna Durai earns Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 3,000 per day. He spends Rs. 12,000 on newspapers every month. Techies commuting in his auto get free rides too. “Employees of TCS get a free ride on their CEO Natarajan Chandrasekaran’s birthday. Cognizant employees get a free ride on their CEO Francis D’Souza’s birthday.

Similar rides are given for employees of firms including Accenture, Infosys and IBM,” he says.

Anna Durai is also one of the sought-after motivational speakers in the lecture circuit. Till date, he has delivered three TED talks. On an average, he makes 10 speeches a month at colleges, universities, business schools and multinational firms. His latest lecture was on ‘Evolution of Entrepreneurship’ at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.

Anna Durai is active on social media. He runs his own website, where he has posted his experiences. His Facebook page has more than 12,000 likes. He is on Instagram and is now learning to use Twitter.

6.73 lakh LPG consumers have given up subsidy

Ever since the Central government announced the Give It Up scheme for LPG where consumers gave up subsidy on refills, a total of 6,73,347 families in the State have opted for the scheme. In July 2015, the number of persons who gave up subsidy on cylinder refills was 1,01,354 in the State.

“Each month, an average of around 10,200 consumers of the three oil majors are giving up the subsidy. Through our sustained campaign, people use the option on the IVRS mode and also go online to opt out of getting subsidy,” explained an oil industry source. Tamil Nadu has 1.01 crore active LPG consumers.

However, there are consumers who get back to the respective oil companies to reverse the opting out. “Some say they have pressed the wrong entry on the IVRS mode and request us and we do oblige them. There are also still a small section of consumers who have not linked their bank accounts with Aadhar numbers and the 17-digit LPG ID. They also do not get subsidy,” the official explained.

This month, the cost of a non-subsidised refill went up by Rs. 86 from last month when it was Rs. 661 in Chennai. The present rate of a subsidised refill is Rs. 422.43 and that of non-subsidised Rs. 746.50 in the city.

SC cancels admission of 180 MBBS students

Irregularities in admission procedures by Kannur and Karuna medical colleges

The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the admission of a total 180 medical undergraduate students in Kannur Medical College and Karuna Medical College in Kerala owing to irregularities in admission procedures.

A Bench led by Justice Arun Mishra ordered the termination of 150 admissions in Kannur Medical College and 30 in Karuna Medical College, thus sending a strong message to private professional colleges that there would be zero tolerance if irregularities are found in admissions even at the cost of de-railing the academic future of the students involved.

The Supreme Court affirmed the High Court order of October 2016 invalidating the admissions on the ground that the institutions did not publish the corrected prospectus on their website and were not transparent in furnishing all the details regarding the admissions online.

Documents fabricated

Perusing some of the documents submitted for admission, the Bench indicated that they seem to have been fabricated, thus extinguishing the last vestige of hope for the students involved in the litigation. The Supreme Court even considered directing criminal action to be initiated against the errant management.

The court further ordered that the Karuna college should draw a supplementary admission list of 30 meritorious students named in a report submitted by the State Examination Controller and the Admission Supervisory Committee in the Supreme Court. These students will occupy the vacant 30 seats.

The court dismissed the arguments raised by advocates Shyam Divan and Haris Beeran that termination of the admission of the students would take a heavy toll on their future. The Bench said its order would set a future example for private professional institutions not to indulge in irregularities during admissions.

The court further barred the two medical institutions from re-admitting students to these seats for the academic year of 2016-17.
