In an incident that shows how casteism is entrenched in our psyches a top scientist and official in the Indian Meteorological Department has filed a police case against her househelp claiming that the latter lied that she was a Brahmin to work in her home.
Megha Khole, a Deputy Director (Weather Forecasting) of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune on Thursday approached the Sinhagadroad police station with a peculiar complaint. According to Khole (Brahmin) her househelp had wrongly claimed that she was a Brahmin and worked in her home fraudulently for a year.
ET has got a copy of her police complaint, in which Khole claims that she wanted a Brahmin woman to work in their home for cooking food during Ganesh festival and during the Shradh (memorial) service for her parents. According to Khole she was approached by one woman who identified her as Nirmala Kulkarni and claimed that she was a Brahmin, following verification where in Khole went to Nirmala's home, Khole hired her.
According to Khole, Nirmala was called a number of times in their home for religious functions and for the Shradh service for her parents. However this year she came to know from her priest that Nirmala was not a Brahmin. Khole then went to Nirmala's home to confront her where the latter admitted that she was not a Brahmin and her real name was Nirmala Yadav.
Sources said that the Pune police were hesitant to file a police complaint however after the Weather department official claimed that during her confrontation with Nirmala the latter abused her and also came to physically assault her.
