சென்னையில் நேற்று நடந்த தினத்தந்தி பவளவிழாவில், பிரதமர் நரேந்திர மோடி பங்கேற்றார். இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, கோபாலபுரம் சென்ற பிரதமர் மோடி, தி.மு.க தலைவர் கருணாநிதியைச் சந்தித்து சுமார் 20 நிமிடங்கள் பேசினார். அப்போது, உடல்நிலை குறித்து மோடி கேட்டறிந்தார். கருணாநிதி, முரசொலி பவளவிழா மலரை மோடிக்குப் பரிசாகக் கொடுத்தார். இந்தச் சந்திப்பு, அரசியல் வட்டாரத்தில் பெரும் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது

இந்த நிலையில், கருணாநிதி-மோடி சந்திப்பு குறித்து பா.ஜ.க தலைவர்களில் ஒருவரான சுப்ரமணியன் சுவாமி கடுமையாக விமர்சித்துள்ளார். இது தொடர்பாக அவர் கூறுகையில், மயிலாப்பூரில் இருக்கும் அறிவு ஜீவிகளின் ஆலோசனைப்படி தான் கருணாநிதியை மோடி சந்தித்தார். கருணாநிதியை மோடி சந்தித்தாலும், 2ஜி வழக்கில் எந்தத் தாக்கத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தாது. மயிலாப்பூரில் இருக்கும் அறிவு ஜீவிகளின் ஆலோசனைப்படி தான் கருணாநிதியை மோடி சந்தித்தார். வழக்கின் தீர்ப்பு 10 ஆயிரம் பக்கங்கள் கொண்டதாக இருக்கும் என்பதால் அவகாசம் எடுத்துக்கொள்வதில் தவறில்லை. வழக்கில் ஆ.ராசாவுக்கு சாதகமாகத் தீர்ப்பு வந்தால், நிச்சயமாக உச்ச நீதிமன்றம் செல்வேன்" என்று கூறினார்.

தி.மு.க. முன்னாள் அமைச்சர் கே.என்.நேருவின் சகோதரர் ராமஜெயம், கடந்த 2012–ம் ஆண்டு திருச்சி பாலக்கரையில் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டார். இந்த வழக்கை சி.பி.சி.ஐ.டி. போலீசார் விசாரித்து வருகின்றனர். ராமஜெயம் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டு, பல ஆண்டுகள் ஆகியும் இதுவரை குற்றவாளிகள் கைது செய்யப்படவில்லை.

இதற்கிடையே ராமஜெயம் கொலை வழக்கை சி.பி.ஐ. வசம் ஒப்படைக்கக்கோரி, அவருடைய மனைவி லதா கடந்த 2014-ம் ஆண்டு மதுரை ஐகோர்ட்டில் தாக்கல் செய்தார்.இந்த வழக்கில் சி.பி.சி.ஐ.டி. போலீசார் குற்றவாளிகளை விரைவில் கண்டுபிடிப்போம், நெருங்கிவிட்டோம் என கூறி வந்தனர். ஆனால் அவர்களால் எந்தவித நடவடிக்கையும் எடுக்கப்பட வில்லை.

தொடர்ந்து பல முறை இந்த வழக்கு விசாரணைக்கு வந்தபோதும் சி.பி.சி.ஐ.டி. தரப்பில் ராமஜெயம் கொலை வழக்கில் குற்றவாளிகள் யார் என்பதை உறுதி செய்ய முடியவில்லை.

இந்த வழக்கு இன்று மதுரை ஐகோர்ட்டில் விசாரணைக்கு வந்தது. அப்போது சி.பி.சி.ஐ.டி. தரப்பில் மேலும் அவகாசம் அளிக்குமாறும் கோரிக்கை விடப்பட்டது.

இதை ஏற்க மறுத்த நீதிபதிகள், ராமஜெயம் கொலை வழக்கு விசார ணையை சி.பி.ஐ.க்கு மாற்றியும், 3 மாதங்களில் அறிக் கை அளிக்குமாறும் உத்தர விட்டனர்.

ஈரான் நாட்டை சேர்ந்த ஒரு இளம் தம்பதி தங்கள் பச்சிளம் குழந்தையுடன் தோஹா நகரில் இருந்து இந்தோனேசியாவுக்கு கத்தார் நாட்டு விமானத்தில் பயணம் செய்தனர்.

இரவு நடுவானில் விமானம் பறந்து கொண்டு இருந்த போது தூங்கி கொண்டிருந்த கணவனை எழுப்பி மனைவி அவ யாரு? எத்தனை நாளா இது நடக்குது..? என்று ஆவேசமாக அவருடன் சண்டை போட்டு உள்ளார். அரைகுறை தூக்கத்திலும் நிலைமையை புரிந்து கொண்ட கணவன் என் செல்போனை நீ ஏன் எடுத்தாய்? என்று கேட்டு தகராறு செய்ய சண்டை ஆக்ரோஷம் ஆனது. தூக்கத்தில் இருந்த பயணிகள் கண்விழித்தனர். விமானத்தில் விளக்குகள் எரியவிடப்பட்டது.

விமான பணிப்பெண்கள், பைலட் ஆகியோர் சென்று இருவரையும் சமாதானம் செய்தனர். ஆனால் சண்டை நின்றபாடில்லை. இதனால் மற்ற பயணிகள் தூங்க முடியாமல் சிரமப்பட்டனர். வேறு வழியில்லாமல் பைலட்டுகள் வான் போக்கு வரத்து கட்டுப்பாட்டு அறைக்கு தொடர்பு கொண்டு நிலைமையை தெரிவித்தனர். அப்போது அந்த விமானம் சென்னையின் மேல் பறந்து கொண்டிருந்தது.

உடனே அந்த விமானத்தை சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தில் அவசரமாக தரை இறக்க அனுமதித்தனர். இதையடுத்து இரவு 10.15 மணிக்கு அந்த விமானம் தரை இறங்கியது. பாதுகாப்பு அதிகாரிகள் அந்த தம்பதியை இறக்கி குடியுரிமை அதிகாரிகளிடம் ஒப்படைத்தனர். இரவு 12.10 மணிக்கு அந்த விமானம் பாலி நகருக்கு புறப்பட்டு சென்றது.

கள்ளக்காதல் விவகாரத்தால் நடந்த சண்டை மற்றும் தம்பதிகள் விமானத்தில் இருந்து இறக்கப்பட்டது பற்றி டெல்லியில் உள்ள ஈரான் தூதரகத்துக்கு தகவல் கொடுத்தனர். அதிகாரிகள் அந்த தம்பதியிடம் பேசி சமரசம் செய்து கோலாலம்பூர் வழியாக செல்லும் வேறு விமானத்தில் ஏற்றி அனுப்பி வைத்தனர்

Suburban trains delayed in Chennai due to mistake committed by station master, loco pilot

CHENNAI: A few suburban trains on the Tambaram-Chennai Beach route were delayed due to a mistake committed by the station master at Egmore station and the loco pilot of the train during peak hours on Monday morning.

Instead of routing the Thirumalpur-Chennai Beach fast EMU to platform number 2, the station master had routed it to platform seven and did the vice versa for a Tambaram slow train, said sources.

This caused the Thirumalpur-Chennai Beach train to stop between Chetpet and Egmore stations around 10am on Monday.

Dismayed by the delay, commuters got down on the tracks and began to walk towards Egmore.

C Vignesh, a commuter, posted photos of the dangerous situation where commuters were forced to walk on the tracks.

Senior railway officials said they were apprised of the mistake committed by the station master and the loco pilot and would take up an inquiry.

In May this year, the station master at the Basin Bridge cabin routed a Moore Market Complex-Tirupathi fast MEMU to a line meant for Gummidipoondi trains. This caused delays for close to two hours. Suburban commuters since then have faced the brunt as Southern Railway issued an order directing fast trains to run only on slow lines.

HC summons chief secretary for contempt of court

Chennai: Noting that the court should not be at the mercy of the state for implementation of its orders, Madras high court summoned Tamil Nadu chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan of and three other secretaries at 10.30am on November 7. A division bench ordered the presence of the top officials in connection with a contempt of court plea.

The issue pertains to orders passed by a division bench directing the authorities to re-convey unused land acquired by the state for establishing Koyambedu whole sale market.

Pointing out that the authorities had failed to comply with the order which was confirmed by the apex court, a division bench of Justice K K Sasidharan and Justice P Velmurugan said: "This would lead to litigants bank upon extra-constitutional authorities to redress their grievance rather coming to court."

The courts are flooded with contempt petitions, the judges said, adding: "We are not aware as to whether the chief secretary is in know of things with respect to this sorry state of affairs."

The other secretaries summoned are — Dharmendra Pratap Yadav, the then secretary to housing and urban development department, Vijaya Rajkumar, member secretary CMDA, S Krishnan, currently principal secretary housing and urban development department.

Swathi murder: Father wants Rs 3 cr compensation from railways

Chennai: About 16 months after IT employee S Swathi, 24, was murdered on Nungambakkam railway platform, her father K Santhanagopalakrishnan has sought Rs 3 crore compensation from the railway administration. However, he had been made to run from pillar to post till a division bench of Madras high court rapped the court registry and held that the father's plea was fit to be heard by the court.

The matter came up before a division bench of Justice KK Sasidharan and Justice P Velmurugan on Monday, after the high court registry rejected it saying the parent must move only the railways claims tribunal. Since the tribunal was an alternative remedy available to him, he cannot directly moved the high court, it was reasoned.

But the bench headed by Justice Sasidharan was not pleased with the registry — which had overstepped its limits — pointing out that the upper limit for the railway claims tribunal was just Rs 8 lakh and hence it could not hear the case anyway. It censured the registry for returning Santhanagopalakrishnan's petition on the ground of maintainability, and said it had "virtually acted as a court, exercising judicial function.'

The bench said: "The registry has no authority to reject the plea on the ground of availability of alternative remedy. It is for the court to decide whether the petition should be entertained in a matter, inspite of alternative remedy. It is always open to the court to entertain pleas notwithstanding the alternative remedy available to the party. We, therefore, hold that it is not within the province of the registry to return the petition on the ground of alternative remedy."

Noting that the issue in the present case pertains to public law domain, the bench held that as such, the writ petition is maintainable before the high court. "We are therefore of the view that the single judge was not correct in dismissing the petition," they added.

The court then directed the registry to number the writ petition and post the same before appropriate portfolio judge.

Swathi was hacked to July 24, 2016, allegedly by a youth identified as Ramkumar, who hailed from Tirunelveli district. Arrested after intense probe, Ramkumar killed himself inside Puzhal central prison later. Both deaths had triggered big public debate in the state, over the safety of working women and undertrial prisoners in state custody.

SC students wait for scholarships from 2013: RTI reply

Chennai: In a move that has affected thousands of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) students pursuing higher education, the Tamil Nadu government has stopped giving them post-matric to take up distance education courses offered by state universities for the past five years.

The Centre-sponsored scholarship provides financial assistance to SC/ST students to enable them to complete education.

The issue came to light when the Tamil Nadu Information Commission (TNIC) heard an appeal filed by an RTI applicant from Trichy, who was pursuing MBA in Periyar University via distance mode. He had applied for scholarship to be sanctioned by the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, but did not receive the amounts due for 2013-14 and 2014-15. A later RTI filed with the department did not elicit any response, based on which he filed the second appeal with TNIC.

During the hearing in October, the department informed TNIC that around 50,000 applications from students of various universities were pending since 2012-13 and many universities had written regarding release of the dues. The public information officer of Adi Dravidar department told TNIC that 'the guidance of government had been sought for procedural difficulties'.

Prinicipal secretary of the department, K Manivasan IAS, told TOI that as per existing rules, distance education students were not eligible for the scholarship.

Enquiries by TOI revealed that the state government had not cleared the PM scholarship dues of University of Madras since 2010-11. For Annamalai University, a total of Rs 14.32 crore scholarship amount claimed for 23,000 students had been pending since 2012-13. A similar situation exists in other universities as well.

"We are not even being given user ID and password for uploading data pertaining to eligible students," said a senior official from a university.
