Ill-maintained’ buses tough to handle, say temporary staff

Chennai: Temporary staff operating government buses on ad hoc basis said they found it increasingly difficult to operate the 'badly-maintained' buses.

Some said they were being forced to work for 14 hours to 16 hours at a stretch to compensate for the high absenteeism. "The temporary staff are being paid between Rs 250 to Rs 450 per day across the state. These rates are way lower to what we earn by operating other commercial vehicles," said one temporary driver from Tuticorin. "Local depot managers and regional transport authorities threatened us that we would face the consequences if we did not agree to their demands," he added.

Another driver, who was operating an MTC bus between Vadapalani and Besant Nagar bus depot, said he had to pump the brake pedals hard to stop the bus at the desired spot.

"On normal days, these buses were operated for at least 500km to 1,000km. Now it is being operated for less than 200km a day. It is difficult to continue operation without maintenance. By running these badly-maintained buses, MTC is putting lives of people at risk," said Sampath Kumar from state transport staff federation.

"It is impossible to run these buses without drivers who are familiar with it. The buses are very old and seldom adequate fund is allocated for repair and fixing spare parts," said Periasamy from DMK's Labour Progressive Front.

According to Union road transport ministry data, 72% buses in MTC's fleet were old and contributed for most number of accidents by any state transport corporation in the country.

Sampath said the state transport department has planned to rope in more permanent staff and private buses into operation as traffic is expected to flare up on Monday. "Not only private buses, even schools were instructed to send their vehicles to the local government bus depots after they were done with their regular sift," he said.

Temperature drops 4 degrees C in a week, leaves city shivering

 CHENNAI: The city recorded its coldest night this season on Saturday, as the temperature dropped by nearly 19Celsius over a week.

The minimum temperature (recorded just before sunrise), was 19C, compared to 22.7C a week earlier, the Met office said on Sunday. At Meenambakkam, the minimum temperature fell to 18.2C.

Weathermen attributed the drop in temperature to the reversal of winds from easterly to north-north westerly. Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather said, "The drop in temperature is due to winds from the cold northern and northwestern parts of the country. The inland winds may persist until Tuesday night before wind direction changes again. When the easterly and north easterly winds resume, the temperature will be back to normal."

The minimum temperature recorded at Meenambakkam was nearly 1C lower than the figure recorded at Nungambakkam. Weathermen said that this is due to the fact that Meenambakkam is 8km to 9km away from the sea, while Nungabmakkam is just 4km from the coast.

During January, the city experiences an average maximum and minimum temperature of 29.3C and 21.2C at Nungambakkam.

MMC alumni to set up research groups

CHENNAI: Over 500 alumni of the Madras Medical College, some from batches as early as 1954, attended the 2018 annual get together ceremony hosted at the MMC's old campus on Sunday.
The alumni members said this year's edition of the reunion could also be the last to be held at the old MMC campus.

According to a note from the alumni association, members residing in countries like USA, UK, Australia, Mauritius and Malaysia had taken part in the reunion. The old guard re-visited their memories by visiting the classrooms, libraries, corridors, benches, grounds and the trees in the campus. The alumni members also visted the new campus constructed on premises where once the Central jail stood.

The reunion was also an occasion for giving back to their alma mater. The alumni resolved to set up volunteer research support groups. This, the alumni said, would improve quality of research work in Tamil Nadu's government medical colleges.

"The research group will guide the juniors about research, dissertation, publication in indexed journals, PhD and innovations. The research support group will also help MMC to make quality proposals to receive project funding from union ministry of science and technology, health and human resources" said a statement.

Research finds insomniacs are unable to overcome negative thoughts

A new study now suggests that less than eight hours sleep is linked to anxiety and depression.
According to the study, insomniacs are less able to overcome negative thoughts than those who are able to get sufficient shut eye which also reduces people's ability to disengage from negative emotions, the research adds.

According to study author Professor Meredith Coles from Binghamton University some people have tendencies to have thoughts get stuck in their heads, and their elevated negative thinking makes it difficult for them to disengage with the negative stimuli.

Up to 50 per cent of people in US have difficulty falling or staying asleep. Anxiety and depression affect around 40 and 16 million adults, respectively, every year in the US.

Researchers analysed adults with 'repeated negative thinking' (RNT) and the results reveal getting insufficient sleep causes people to spend more time looking at emotionally-negative images.
Insomnia also results in sufferers being unable to disengage from the negative pictures they view.
The findings were published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry.

Indian doctor sentenced in US for sex offences

Washington, January 4

An Indian doctor has been sentenced to 10 months behind bars in the US for groping two teenage female patients and faces deportation to India after the completion of his jail term. Arun Aggarwal, 40, was sentenced on Thursday after pleading guilty to four counts of gross sexual imposition. Aggarwal, formerly a doctor at Dayton Children's Hospital in Ohio, inappropriately touched two teens during medical examination between 2013 and 2015, the government attorney said. Designated as a Tier I sex offender, Aggarwal was arrested when he was allegedly trying to flee the country. In a statement, the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Leon Daidone alleged that the local hospital did not report the incident to the police. Aggarwal now faces deportation to India. — PTI.
