Andal is like my mother, I will never disrespect her’

Tamil writer and film lyricist Vairamuthu finds himself in the thick of a controversy over his reference to Hindu deity Andal as a 'dasi' in an essay he wrote earlier this month. What began as a demand for him to apologise has now snowballed into a larger controversy, with several Hindu religious sects joining in to give it a Hindutva political colour. Amidst the raging controversy, D Govardan of TOI spoke to Vairamuthu: 

How did you land yourself in such a controversy?
Tamil language is over 3,000 years old. I have been researching and recording the contributions of great stalwarts to Tamil literature, from Tholkaappiar to the recent Bharathiyar and Pudhumai Pitthan. I want to present all the works of these stalwarts in one book since the tech savvy millennial generation is not only moving away from Tamil, but also from the habit of reading. So far, I have written about 13 greats from Thiruvalluvar and Kambhar to Vallalar and Bharathiyar. For Naayanmaars, I considered Appar and I chose Andal to represent Alwars.
Andal's Tamil is something that I have lived and breathed for 40 years. I have looked at Andal from the eyes of a society and also a religion and in the context of the period she lived. I have gone far into her Tamil much more than a Vaishnavite. I not only celebrate her Tamil, but also her being the first voice for women's empowerment.
But, wasn't it your essay and narration on Andal that landed you in trouble?
I narrated the essay for about 35-40 minutes and it was well received. I cited several examples from works of others to drive home my appreciation for Andal and what she stood for. In the end, I quoted a research paper, which described Andal as a 'devadasi who lived and died in Srirangam Temple'. The reference was only used as someone who gave herself to god and who was created to serve god. Fearing that the reference itself may be misconstrued in the present day context, I elaborated further stating that devotees may not understand immediately and if they understand the context, they will accept that. My fear came from the use of the word 'dasi'. I only meant it in the rightful meaning and used it only as a passing reference to highlight empowerment of women. My fears came true, when someone misconstrued 'dasi' as 'vesi' and it has come to this. The source has not been questioned nor accepted. If the source is not wrong, how come the reference alone is wrong?
But, only you are under attack?
I did not use the reference even in the minutest extent to denigrate her. Just as my mother breast-fed me, Andal fed me with her Tamil and made me what I am today. How will I denigrate my mother? This is research work and writing and not everyone can understand. If I say that, they will again misunderstand me. I do not know - whether due to political compulsion or for something else, the whole thing has been distorted deliberately.

They are asking you to apologise?

I have expressed regret. The Tamil Writers collectively questioned me for doing that, when what I had spoken is the truth. When that is the case, what more should I do? If I wanted to defame her, will I go and deliver my speech in her birth place. I wanted to appreciate her literary contribution through my Tamil learning. In fact, this is the first time a rationalist has appreciated Andal's work to such a great extent. I have been truthful to my work and I have justice on my side.

Exicse officials collected Rs 1.63 lakh bribe in one day from bars operating with expired licenses

Chennai: Bribes collected from Tasmac bars run with expired licenses may run up to Rs 1.6 lakh per day, if a recent case booked by DVAC is any indication. 

Officials of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption (DVAC) have busted a modus operandi of some officials in the excise department in Coimbatore where they were collecting Rs 5,000 each from Tasmac bars which were operating despite expiry of licenses.

Jeyachitra, divisional excise officer and M Senthilkumararajan, revenue inspector (excise) of the Coimbatore North area, were nabbed after a surprise check by DVAC officials based on a complaint by district inspection cell officer PN Prabhakaran.
During the check on January 5, officials discovered that a silver colour Tata Indica had been hired along with a driver to collect bribes. A total of Rs 95,940 was found on Jeyachitra, of which Rs 55,500 was found in a leather bag and Rs 35,000 was in a cover. A total of Rs 56,000 was the collection from 10 bars visited prior to the one where the surprise check was conducted, officials said. The driver of the car was given Rs 500, DVAC said in the FIR. The licenses for the bars had expired on December 31.

The officials had collected Rs 1.63 lakh in a single day through these bribes, the FIR stated. The bribes collected meticulously noted down in a 72-page note which was collected as evidence from the excise officials.

Jeyachitra had allegedly kept aside Rs 35,000 in a cover to be given to Senthilkumararajan while the remaining Rs 1.28 lakh meant for herself was kept in an almirah in the corner of the first floor of her house, DVAC said in the FIR.

A case was registered by DVAC inspector G Arumugam under Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 read with 13(1)(d) on January 5. The sections pertain to criminal misconduct by public servant and obtaining a pecuniary advantage by corrupt or illegal means.

Govt Signals Move Towards 1-Stage Filing

New Delhi: The Centre and states on Thursday decided to reduce goods and services tax rates on over 80 items, while deciding to start the move towards a single-stage filing instead of the current threestage form, in what is seen as the biggest process overhaul

since the new regime kicked in last July. TOI had reported on January 16 that such a move was likely.

The list included 29 goods and 53 services, finance minister Arun Jaitley told reporters after a meeting of the GST Council, which has all state finance ministers as members. There was relief for those selling second-hand vehicles or buying diamonds and precious stones in addition to tickets for theme parks, ballets and dance performances as well as contributions to services provided by RWAs to their members.

Theatre performance in Indian language and entry to planetariums that cost less than Rs 500 will be exempted from GST, against Rs 250 now. There is also a move to reduce tax on small housekeeing service providers hired through e-commerce platforms from 18% to 5%. The new rates will kick in from January 25.

In addition, rates will be reviewed for 42 handicrafts, including products such as hand-made paper.


College entrance tests won’t incur GST

All exams conducted by educational institutions and services related to them will be exempted from GST. This means, college entrance exams will be outside the ambit of GST. Further, vehicles used to transport students, faculty and staff schools have been exempted.

Unlike the November meeting, which saw massive rate restructuring involving over 200 items, this one was a limited exercise, which is expected to leave a Rs 1,000-1,200 crore annual dent on the exchequer.

This time, the focus was on simplifying the filing process, which has come in for severe criticism. While it has been decided in principle to scrap the three stage process, the alternate mechanism is a work in progress but sources said the idea is to move to a single form. At the meeting, Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi and GST Network chairman A B Pandey suggested various options based on discussions undertaken by groups headed by them, with Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani joining the discussions too.

The Council discussed the possibility of retaining only GSTR-3B or the initial sales return, while asking sellers to upload their invoices. This will help tax authorities match the two and in case a difference is spotted, the taxpayer can be asked to explain and pay up, Jaitley said.

“It was finally culminating into filing 3B returns and supplier invoice, which would be adequate,” he said, adding that the structure will be finalised soon and the GST Council will decide on it at its next meeting. Asked if filing only one return is the way forward, he said “that seems to be the course”.

Officials were more forthcoming, suggesting that over a period of next few months, GSTR-3B returns will be done away with and only invoices will be the way forward to unshackle businesses from what they are claiming is a big burden. “Our analysis of 1.5 crore returns filed so far shows that 92% of the taxpayers file 50 invoices a month, which is less than two a day. So it’s not so much of a burden as people are making it out to be,” said an official.

Tax experts, however, wanted more clarity on the issue. “It appears that the onus of ensuring that appropriate input tax credits on a monthly basis will largely shift to the taxpayers and possibly a periodic audit process to ensure the same will be put in force, however we need to await the decision in the next meeting,” said M S Mani, partner at Deloitte India.

There were suggestions to make the system more robust to avoid inconvenience. “While simplification and merging multiple monthly returns into a single return would be good in concept, it needs to be ensured that invoice level details are made available to the buyers on a real time basis so that remedial action can be taken without waiting for assessment or audit,” said Pratik Jain, partner at PwC.

Pass or fail? Day after CA results, students in a fix
Many Complaints About Discrepancy In Score Lists

Mumbai: Hundreds of students whose CA results were declared on Wednesday saw something miraculous happen on Thursday. Many of them who had failed to clear the exam accessed score lists showing them as passed.

Ankita Mulani did not clear the CA final exam as per her score card on the ICAI website. But on rank lists available on the Internet, she found she had passed the gruelling exam in her very first attempt.

She is not the only one. Mahavir Gundecha who scored 194 has been declared pass in the lists available on the Internet whereas his scorecard shows him as failed.

There were similar complaints from other states. Across India, students buzzed on social media and on chat groups about the discrepancy in the result.

Snehal Lodha tweeted, “The CA Final result declared on 17/1 as per the ICAI website showing my result as Fail seems incorrect as I have passed as per the database.”

The ICAI clarified, “Some mismatches had occurred in the file attached to the branches. Realizing this mismatch, the department had immediately sent the corrected version to branches and regional councils.”

Exam head B Muralidharan said, “It was brought to our notice that this internal communication has been inadvertently shared outside which has created confusion in the student fraternity.”

Students were anxious about their exact status as their score cards and result list did not match.

“At least 50-60 students I know are facing this problem,” said Rajesh Sahijwani, whose daughter took the final exam in November.

According to some, candidates with scores of over 190 have all faced the same problem. Examinees are concerned whether the result database was hacked.

“The result was delayed by a few hours and that is when they seem to have downgraded our scores,” claimed a student.

The internet had several lists with details of tens of thousands of candidates who took the CA final exam. “Such details are not possible from any external agency. This is a list that has got leaked from the ICAI database,” alleged a candidate. Many are applying for revaluation. Some others are planning to file a writ petition. Others are organising a protest.

This year, the CA final exam was taken by 30,084 students and 6,841 cleared at least one group taking the pass percentage to 22.76.

The ICAI stated that 9,479 candidates had qualified as chartered accountants.

எழும்பூரில் உள்ள அரசு குழந்தைகள் நல மருத்துவமனைக்கு நாள்தோறும் நூற்றுக்கணக்கானவர்கள் சிகிச்சைக்காக வந்துசெல்கின்றனர். உள்நோயாளிகளாகப் பலரும் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டு சிகிச்சைபெற்றுவருகின்றனர். மருத்துவமனையில் பயிற்சி டாக்டர்களும் அதிக அளவில் பணியாற்றிவருகின்றனர். இந்த மருத்துவமனையில், பவித்ரா என்பவர் பயிற்சி டாக்டராகப் பணியாற்றிவருகிறார். இந்த நிலையில் பவித்ராவின் செல்போன், லேப் டாப் இருந்த பை திருடு போனது. இதுகுறித்து அவர், காவல்துறையில் புகார் அளித்தார்.

இந்தப் புகாரின் பேரில் விசாரணை நடத்திய காவல்துறையினர், மருத்துவமனையில் இருந்த அனைத்து சிசிடிவி கேமராவையும் ஆய்வு செய்தனர். அப்போது, பவித்ராவின் பையை முகமூடி அணிந்து வந்த மூன்று பேர் திருடிச்சென்றது தெரியவந்தது. இதையடுத்து, அந்த மூன்று பேர் யார் என்று பார்த்தபோது, மருத்துவமனை ஊழியர்கள் சரத்குமார், சசிகுமார், அபினேஷ் எனத் தெரியவந்துள்ளது. மூன்று பேரையும் கைதுசெய்த காவல்துறையினர், அவர்களிடமிருந்த செல்போன், லேப்டாப் ஆகியவற்றைப் பறிமுதல்செய்தனர். தொடர்ந்து அவர்களிடம் விசாரணை மேற்கொண்டுவருகின்றனர்.

டாக்டரிடமே மருத்துவமனை ஊழியர்கள் கைவரிசை காட்டியுள்ள சம்பவம் அங்குள்ள மற்ற டாக்டர்களை அதிர்ச்சியடைய வைத்துள்ளது.

தூங்காநகரமான மதுரையின் நடைபாதைகளில், யாரோ ஒருவரை எதிர்பார்த்து வயிற்றுப் பசியோடு காத்திருக்கின்றனர் சிலர். ஒரு ஆட்டோ விரைந்து வருகிறது. அதில் பல பார்சல்கள். ஆட்டோ ஓட்டுநர் கொடுத்த பார்சலை பெற்றுக் கொள்கின்றனர். அப்போதே வயிறு நிரம்பிய மகிழ்ச்சியில் கைகூப்புகின்றனர். அடுத்த இடம் நோக்கி பார்சலுடன் பறக்கிறது ஆட்டோ.

ஒருவேளை உணவுக்குகூட வழியின்றி நடைபாதைகளிலும், சாலையோரங்களிலும் பசியால் துடிப்பவர்கள், உடல் வற்றிப்போய் மரணம் அடைபவர்கள் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகம். மற்றொரு புறம், ஹோட்டல்கள், வசதிபடைத்தவர்களின் வீடுகள், திருமண மண்டபங்களில் தட்டுத் தட்டாக உணவுகள் வீணாகி, குப்பைத் தொட்டிக்குப் போகின்றன. இவ்வாறு யாருக்கும் பயனின்றி வீணாகும் உணவுகளைச் சேகரித்து சாலையோரவாசிகளின் பசியாற்றுகிறார் மதுரையைச் சேர்ந்த ஆட்டோ டிரைவர் டி.ஆர்.வாசுதேவன் (31).

மதுரை காமராஜர் சாலை பகத்சிங் தெருவில் வசிக்கும் இவர், பகல் முழுவதும் ஆட்டோ ஓட்டிவிட்டு, இரவில் வீடு திரும்புகிறார். அன்றைய பொழுதை முழுமையடையச் செய்யும் அவரது சேவை, அதற்குப் பிறகுதான் தொடங்குகிறது. இரவு 10 மணிக்கு மீண்டும் ஆட்டோவை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு கிளம்புகிறார். ஹோட்டல்களுக்குச் சென்று, மீதமாகும் உணவுகளை சேகரித்துக்கொண்டு, வீட்டுக்கு வருகிறார். அங்கு தனது தாயுடன் சேர்ந்து, உணவை தனித்தனியே பார்சல் செய்கிறார். ஆதரவற்றவர்களின் இருப்பிடங்கள் நோக்கிச் செல்கிறார். சிறிது நேரத்தில், பசித்தவர்களின் வயிறு போல, வாசுதேவனின் மனமும் நிறைகிறது.

இந்த சேவை பற்றி வாசுதேவன் கூறியதாவது:

‘‘ஒருவேளை சாப்பாட்டுக்கே கஷ்டப்பட்ட குடும்பம். மதியம் பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் சத்துணவு சாப்பிடுவேன். இரவு அப்பா காசு கொண்டுவந்தாதான் சாப்பாடு. பசி வயிற் றைக் குடையும். எங்கேயாச்சும் கல்யாணம், காதுகுத்து நடக்குதான்னு, அம்மாவுக்குத் தெரியாம மண்டபம், மண்டபமா சுத்துவேன். 6-ம் வகுப்புக்கு மேல படிக்கல. ஆட்டோ ஓட்டுறேன். அதனால, சாப்பாட்டுக்கு பிரச்சினை இல்லை. ஆனா, சின்ன வயசுல நான் அனுபவிச்ச பசியின் கொடுமை இன்னமும் மனசைவிட்டு நீங்கல. அதனாலதான், பசிக்கிறவங்களுக்கு சோறு போடறத ஒரு கடமையா செய் றேன்.

2005-ல் ஒரு கேட்ரிங் சர்வீஸ் சாப்பாட்டு பார்சலை மண்டபத்துக்கு சவாரி ஏத்திட்டுப் போனேன். அங்கு நிறைய சாப்பாடு மீதமாகிடிச்சு. அதை எடுத்துட்டுப்போய், ராத்திரி ரோட்டுல தூங்கிட்டிருந்த ஆதரவற்றவங்களை தட்டி எழுப்பிக் கொடுத்தேன். அன்னிக்கு தொடங்கின உதவி, இப்போ வரை தொடருது.

என்னோட இந்த சேவையைப் பார்த்த சில ஹோட்டல்காரங்க தினமும் இரவு மீதமாகும் சாப்பாட்டைக் கொடுப்பாங்க. ஹோட்டலில் சாப்பாடு கிடைக்காத நாட்கள்ல, மண்டபங்கள்ல விசேஷம் எதுவும் நடக்குதான்னு பார்ப்பேன். மீதமாகுற உணவைத் தரமுடியுமான்னு கேட்பேன். கொடுத்தா, அதையும் பயன்படுத்திக்குவேன்.

பிரியாணி, மீன், மட்டன், சப்பாத்தி, புரோட்டா என நான் தினமும் விதவிதமா கொண்டு போவேன். அதனால, என்னை எதிர்பார்த்து காத்திருப்பாங்க. சின்ன வயசுல, நானும் அம்மாவும் இரவு சாப்பாட்டுக்காக அப்பாவை எதிர்பார்த்து காத்திருந்ததுதான் ஞாபகம் வரும்..’’ என்று நெகிழ்ச்சியோடு கூறுகிறார் வாசுதேவன்.

‘‘விரைவில் ஒரு கடையை வாடகைக்கு எடுத்து இந்த சேவையைத் தொடரப் போறேன். இப்படி செஞ்சா, இன்னும் நிறைய பேரின் பசியைத் தீர்க்க முடியுமே!’’ - கருணையோடு நம்பிக்கையும் மிளிர சொல்கிறார் வாசுதேவன்.

மாங்கனி நகரமான சேலத்தில் ‘தி இந்து’ தமிழ் நாளிதழின் ‘பெண் இன்று’ இணைப்பிதழ் சார்பில் மகளிர் திருவிழா கடந்த ஜனவரி 7 அன்று சேலம் ஜெய்ராம் கலை அறிவியல் கல்லுாரியில் நடைபெற்றது. அலை அலையாக வந்த பெண்களின் கூட்டத்தில் ஒட்டுமொத்த அரங்கமும் கலகலப்பில் நிறைந்தது.

சேலம் அரசு இசைப்பள்ளி மாணவிகளின் பரதநாட்டியம் கண்களுக்குக் கலை விருந்து அளித்தது என்றால் துரோணா குத்துசண்டைப் பயிற்சி மையத்தினரின் தற்காப்பு நிகழ்ச்சி பெண்களின் வீரத்தைப் பறைசாற்றியது. ‘சமையல் பெண்களுக்கானதா இல்லையா?’ என்ற பேச்சரங்கம் சிந்திக்கவைத்தது. சென்னை ‘மேட்’ அகாடமியின் பறையாட்டத்துடன் சிலம்பாட்டமும் இணைந்துகொள்ள, அரங்கம் அதிர்ந்தது.



மீரா - TAMIL பெண் என்பதே பெருமிதம்

விழாவின் மூன்று முத்துக்களாய் முத்திரை பதித்துப் பேசிய சிறப்பு விருந்தினர்களால் செவி முழுக்கக் கருத்துத் தேன் பாய்ந்தது. முதலில் பேசிய அரசுப் பொது மருத்துவர் எஸ்.எஸ். மீரா, “பெண்களால் நிறைந்த அரங்கத்தைக் கண்டதும் உள்ளம் மகிழ்ச்சியில் பொங்கியதைப் புதியதாகச் சொல்ல வேண்டுமானால் மெர்சலாயிட்டேன்” என்றதும், கரவொலி அடங்க வெகுநேரமானது. கவிதை நடையிலான தேனினும் இனிய உரையை அவர் தொடர்ந்தார்: ‘‘பெண் என்று கேட்டு எதிலும் முன்னுரிமை பெறாதீர்கள். நமக்குக் கிடைத்ததை வைத்து முன்னேற வேண்டும். இந்த வாழ்வில் என்ன சுகத்தைக் கண்டேன்; எனக்கு மட்டும் ஏன் இப்படி என்பது போன்ற சலிப்பு வார்த்தைகள் இனியும் வேண்டாம்.

பெண்ணாகப் பிறக்க மாதவம் செய்தவர்கள் நாம் என்பதை உணர்வோம். பருவ வயதுப் பெண்களை மயக்கும் ஆண்களின் அலங்கார வார்த்தைகளான, ‘உனக்காக நான் உயிரையும் கொடுப்பேன், நீயின்றி நான் இல்லை, நீதான் என்னுயிர்’ போன்றவற்றை நம்பி ஏமாந்துவிடாத அளவுக்குப் பெண்களை வளர்க்க வேண்டும்.

உங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்காத விஷயத்தை நினைத்துப் புலம்புவதைவிட இருப்பதைக் கொண்டு மனம் நிறையும் பெண்மை குணம் கொள்பவரை எங்கும் கொண்டாடுவார்கள்’’ எனப் பேசினார். பெண்கள் தங்கள் உடல் நலனில் காட்ட வேண்டிய அக்கறை குறித்துப் பேசியதோடு அந்தரங்க நோய்கள் விஷயத்தில் பெண்கள் அசட்டையாக இருக்கக் கூடாது எனவும் வலியுறுத்தினார்.



சண்முகபிரியா - TAMIL சட்டம்தான் கேடயம்

அடுத்ததாக நீதித்துறை நடுவர் ஏ. சண்முகப்பிரியா, “தாய் வயிற்றில் சிசுவாய் உருவெடுக்கும் காலம் தொடங்கி மூதாட்டிப் பருவம்வரை திறம்பட வகுக்கப்பட்ட சட்டம் பெண்களுக்குப் பாதுகாப்பைத் தருகிறது. ஆனாலும் பெண் சிசுக் கொலை, குழந்தைத் திருமணம், பாலியல் வன்முறை, வரதட்சிணைக் கொடுமை, விவாகரத்து எனப் பெண்களைச் சூழ்ந்திருக்கும் பிரச்சினைகள் ஏராளம்.

இவை அனைத்துக்கும் ஆண் வர்க்கத்தை மட்டுமே குற்றம் சாட்ட முடியாது. இதன் பின்புலத்தில் பெண்கள் இயங்குவதையும் மறுக்க முடியாது. குழந்தைகளுக்கு குட் டச், பேட் டச் போன்ற விஷயங்களைக் கற்பிப்பது பெற்றோரின் கடமை. பெண்கள் பாதுகாப்புச் சட்டம் அவர்களுக்கான கேடயமே தவிர, அதை ஆயுதமாகப் பயன்படுத்தக் கூடாது’’ என்றார்.

விழிப்புணர்வு அவசியம்

சேலம் மாநகரக் காவல் துணை ஆணையர் ஜி. சுப்புலட்சுமியின் பேச்சு ஆரம்பம் முதல் கடைசிவரை களைகட்டியது. ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ஓர் ஆசை உள்ளது என்று அவர் சொல்ல, வாசகி ஒருவர் எழுந்து, “எனக்குத் தலையில் சைடு ரோஸ் வைக்க ஆசை” என்றார். அதைக் கேட்ட துணை ஆணையர், “கூட்டம் முடிவதற்குள் உங்கள் ஆசையை நிறைவேற்றிவைக்கிறேன்” என்றார்.
