Not a NEET idea to consider State board syllabi, say students

NEW DELHI: Students, parents and teachers from various parts of the country have written to the Union government against its decision to rejig the syllabus for the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) less than 100 days before the examination.

Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for Human Resource Development, in an interview with The New Indian Express on Wednesday had said that from this year, all State syllabi will be taken into consideration while preparing examination papers for NEET — the test for entrance into MBBS and dental courses.

This, the minister, had said was being done in the wake of protests in some states, since students belonging to State boards feel they were at a disadvantage because the NEET syllabus is based on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) pattern.

Hundreds of aspiring medical practitioners and their parents/guardians are now saying that the decision to make significant changes in the syllabus is “politically motivated” and has created “panic and confusion” in their minds.

“I suspect that the government has now come up with the idea to appease some student groups and political parties in southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu, which had seen strong anti-NEET protests last year,” Amit Gupta, a teacher in Kota, Rajasthan, who had last year challenged the Centre’s decision to fix an upper age limit for NEET aspirants in the Supreme Court, told this newspaper.

He added, “While curricula in some states is based on the CBSE pattern, syllabi of states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra are up to 40 per cent different and if all those different portions were taken into account for NEET papers, most students — even non-CBSE ones — will be in for a major shock.”

The CBSE is likely to organise the NEET-undergraduate exam in the first week of May and a notification is likely by January-end. Last year, about 12 lakh students had taken up the test across India.

A group of parents from Maharashtra on Friday shot off a letter to Javadekar asking him to retract his decision.
“Students have been working hard for the last two years and have been following the NCERT books as per the CBSE syllabus..any changes at this hour will lead to increased stress and chaos among students as students might be required to study new topics..we therefore pray to the government to stick to its stand of one nation, one syllabus, one examination,” a letter signed by about 100 guardians read.
Many others wrote to the HRD ministry and PM Narendra Modi on social media platforms to express their displeasure over the government’s change of stance over NEET syllabus. “Respected PMji, regarding the education minister’s announcement of replacing NEET syllabus with the State syllabi-new rules must be implemented at the beginning of the 11th std (sic). With only 3 months to go, it is too late for the students to study something new all over again,” tweeted Smita Sanghvi, parent of a NEET aspirant.

Close shave for Manipur CM Nongthombam Biren and around 160 passengers

Around 160 passengers, including Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren, had a close shave when their Air India plane suffered a bird hit while landing at the airport in Guwahati.

The Delhi-Guwahati-Imphal flight was grounded on January 19 and passengers travelling to Imphal were left stranded.

“Our AI flight was hit by a flying bird and airplane landed safely in Guwahati today,” Mr. Biren tweeted on Friday.

An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the flight carrying 160 passengers was grounded for inspection by a team of engineers.

“The impact was so powerful that it could make a hole. It [the bird hit] occurred when the aircraft was on descend and wheels unfolded,” he said in the same tweet.

The Manipur Chief Minister, however, in another tweet pulled up Air India for the “poor and inefficient” management at the Guwahati airport.

“Air India management in Guwahati Airport is so poor and inefficient. Till now, many passengers are inside the aircraft without food and accommodation,” he tweeted.

“Only three AI staff seen there. Extra flight also not possible till tomorrow afternoon, as per AI authority,” Mr. Biren said in the tweet.

In response, the Air India spokesperson said the airlines did its best to take care of the stranded passengers.

“After the aircraft landed in Guwahati, the airport staff found it was a bird hit so the plane was grounded for further inspection. We did our utmost to take care of the stranded passengers,” the spokesperson told PTI.

He also said that the Air India has sent “men and material” from Kolkata to Guwahati to check the aircraft and they are on the job of making the aircraft air worthy.

The spokesperson further said that the Air India is operating an additional flight to fly stranded passengers which will depart for Imphal this afternoon.

Erode selected for Smart City project

Development works worth Rs. 1,500 crore to be implemented

With Erode among nine cities across the country selected for implementing Smart City proposals in the fourth phase, stakeholders, residents, industrialists and people from all walks of life perceive it as a major milestone for the overall development of the city.

Erode will see developments at an outlay of nearly Rs. 1,500 crore and the focus will be on renovation of Perumpallam Canal and retrofitting the nearby areas.

Erode, with 70.32 score, stood second next to Silvassa in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli (70.45 score) in the list that was announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Friday.

The Corporation had submitted Smart City Proposal (SCP) at a total project cost of Rs. 1,543.51 crore, of which Rs. 1,254.35 crore pertains to the area development proposal and Rs. 289.17 crore for the pan city plan. The corporation area is spread across 109.51sq.km. with population at 5.15 lakh, in 2015.

Canal

Under area development, renovation of Perumpallam Canal and retrofit of adjoining areas for 2,251 acre that covers 21% of the total population in the city is to be done at Rs. 280 crore.

Apart from this, modernisation of textile hub, bus stand, strengthening power distribution, upgrade of roads, parking facilities and other facilities would be created.

In the pan city proposal, it is planned to bring in E-Health System and CCTV surveillance in the city at about Rs. 250 crore.

Chairman of Olirum Erodu Foundation, which works for developing Erode into a world-class city, and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Erode chapter, M. Chinnasami welcomed the selection and said that it will help in transforming infrastructure and nurturing green environment in the city. “Efforts by various stakeholders paid finally,” he added.

While residents expect that improved infrastructure will make the city prosper, traders and commercial establishments expect the Smart City tag to bring in more business transactions.

“The city will transform into a textiles industrial hub,” said M. Palanisamy, a trader.

Corporation Commissioner M. Seeni Ajmal Khan told The Hindu that the proposals focus on overall development of the city and a Special Purpose Vehicle will be formed at the earliest for implementing the projects.

Funding

While 65% of the total funding will be from the Central and State governments, 28% would be through convergence of schemes, 6% through public private partnership and 1% by the local body.

Thai Pusam festival to begin on January 25

The 10-day Thai Pusam festival would commence on January 25 with the flag hoisting ceremony at Sri Periyanayaki Amman Temple, popularly known as ‘oor kovil’ in Palani, the  third abode of Arubadai Veedu.

The holy car procession would be held on January 31 and Theppam (float festival) on February 3, the 10th day of the festival.

Car procession would be held around 11 a.m. instead of 4.30 p.m. owing to lunar eclipse. Sayaratchai puja (evening puja) has also been advanced to 2.45 p.m. instead 5.30 p.m.

The temple would be closed around 3.45 p.m. Lunar eclipse would take place between 6.22 p.m. and 8.41 p.m.

LIC not to seek Aadhaar details for online access

Top official of the insurance firm says it was inadvertently done

The Life Insurance Corporation of India on Friday said they will remove the mandatory requirement of providing Aadhaar number for customers to access their policy pages, saying it was “inadvertently done”.

The move comes after The Hindu on Thursday pointed out how the insurance company was forcing people to update their Aadhaar number and PAN on their login page to access their policy pages and other details.

Replying to an email sent to the Chairman on Thursday, the Executive Director Corporate Communications, LIC, said the earlier website was available without requesting the Aadhaar number.

“Subsequent to the migration to a new portal, the LIC has planned to extend the range of facilities offered to our customers online,” the Executive Director said.

“Keeping in mind that data security and privacy are of paramount importance and also abiding by the Regulator’s directives, we have sought additional information from the customer to establish his online credentials. In the process, seeking of Aadhaar number, PAN details mandatorily was inadvertently done,” the official said.

The official added that the issue has been escalated with their technical team and “we will be removing the requirements of the mandatory providing of Aadhaar number and PAN”. However, the official has not specified a date by which this would be done.

Like a firewall

The mandatory requirements on the site acted like a firewall preventing access to a customer’s policy pages if they didn’t provide the Aadhaar number and PAN details. Legal experts feel that the move is in violation of the Supreme Court interim order extending the deadline of customers providing Aadhaar number for services to March 31. Subsequent to this interim order, the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDA) issued a circular to all insurance companies with the new deadline.

Many customers had raised objections regarding this move of LIC on Twitter. Some customers whom The Hindu spoke to had said they were forced to part with their Aadhaar number as they could not access their pages.

தமிழக அரசின் பேருந்து கட்டணம் நேற்று இரவு திடீரென உயர்த்தப்பட்டது. மாநகர பேருந்துகளில் குறைந்தபட்ச கட்டணம் ரூ.3-ல் இருந்து ரூ.5ஆகவும், அதிகபட்ச கட்டணம் ரூ.12-ல் இருந்து ரூ.19ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. விரைவு பேருந்துகளுக்கான கட்டணம் 30 கி.மீ வரை ரூ.17-ல் இருந்து ரூ.24ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.   
 

குளிர்சாதன பேருந்துகளில் ரூ.27-ல் இருந்து ரூ.42ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. வால்வோ பேருந்துகளில் ரூ.33-ல் இருந்து ரூ.51ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதீநவீன பேருந்துகளில் ரூ.21-ல் இருந்து ரூ.33ஆக உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.  
 

இந்த கட்டண நேற்று நள்ளிரவு முதல் அமலுக்கு வந்துள்ளது. போக்குவரத்து ஊழியர்கள் ஊதிய உயர்வு கோரி போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுப்பட்ட நிலையில் தற்போது தமிழக அரசு பேருந்துகளுக்கான கட்டணத்தை உயர்த்தியுள்ளது.
 

மேலும், இதற்கு முன்பு சென்னை மாநகர பேருந்துகளில் ஒரு நாள் முழுவதும் பயணிக்க ரூ.50 பாஸ் வழங்கப்பட்டது. தற்போது அதன் விலை ரூ.20 உயர்த்தப்பட்டு ரூ.70 ஆக அதிகரித்துள்ளது. அதேபோல், ரூ.1000 ஆக இருந்த மாதாந்திர பாஸ் தற்போது ரூ.1400 ஆக உயர்ந்துள்ளது.
 

இது பொதுமக்களுக்கு அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

மகளிர் வாழ்வாதாரத்துக்காக இந்த வாகனங்கள் வழங்கப்படுவதால், 5ஆண்டுகளுக்கு இந்த வாகனங்களை விற்கவோ, வோறொருவருக்கு மாற்றவோ முடியாது. பயனாளிகள், தங்களது சொந்த நிதி அல்லது வங்கிக்கடன், ரிசர்வ் வங்கி விதிகளின் கீழ் இயங்கும் நிதி நிறுவனங்கள் மூலமாகக் கடன்பெற்று இருசக்கர வாகனம் வாங்கலாம். கியர் இல்லாத, 125 சிசி-க்கும் மிகாமல் அந்த வாகனம் இருக்க வேண்டும். மானியம் பெறும் நபர், உரிய ஓட்டுநர் உரிமம் பெற்றவராகவும், 1.01.2018-க்கு பிறகு வாகனம் வாங்கி உள்ளவராகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும்.
