CHENNAI: As many as 1,008 medical professionals, who have been recruited through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Recruitment Board (TMSRB), will join duty in government hospitals in a few days. They received appointment orders from Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, in Chennai on Thursday.
Those who received appointment orders included 242 assistant surgeons, 337 nurses, 308 pharmacists, 90 radiographers, 21 block health statisticians and 10 junior assistants. The TMSRB is the first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, introduced by the late Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa, in 2012. So far, the board has recruited 10,858 doctors, 9,533 nurses, 1,323 village health nurses and 2,166 other medical professionals.

The CM said the State government had been implementing many measures to attain the goals set in Vision-2023 document. Giving a long list of schemes implemented by the Health Department, he said Tamil Nadu was performing well in the medical field. “Government hospitals are offering treatment on a par with private hospitals. For the past three years, Tamil Nadu stands first in organ transplantation and this became possible only because of the involvement of government doctors,” the CM said.

In this connection, Palaniswami recalled how Narayanasamy (20), a worker from Athur in Dindigul district who had lost his hands in an accident, got both hands through organ transplantation. Two hands of a deceased person were implanted on Narayanasamy two months ago and now he is able to use them with ease. For the first time in the country, this kind of surgery was successfully performed in a GH in TN, Palaniswami said.

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said the allocation for the Health Department, which stood at just Rs 3,888 crore in 2010-11, had now risen to Rs 11,638,44 crore for 2018-19. The number of MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu had gone up from 1,940 to 2,900 and the number of PG medical students had gone up to 575.

Giving a detailed account of medical facilities being provided in government hospitals, Panneerselvam said that for organ transplantation, an assistance of up to Rs 35 lakh, the highest amount from any State government, was being given to the needy. Besides, during the post-transplantation period, immunosuppressive drugs are given free of cost, he added. Health Minister C Vijaya Basker, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan and senior officials took part in the function.

CHENNAI: A Division Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the CB-CID to investigate the case relating to misappropriation of Rs 2 crore by advocate S Tamilarasan in connection with the Kumbakonam school fire tragedy case. The Bench of Justices R Mahadevan and V Parthiban gave the direction while passing interim orders on a contempt application seeking to punish the advocate for the fraud committed by him against his clients, who are the parents of the victims.

The CB-CID shall register a case forthwith, conduct enquiry and proceed further in accordance with law against the lawyer and all others who illegally transferred the money from the accounts of the victims.

In the major fire accident on July 16, 2004, at Sri Krishna School in Kumbakonam, 94 students were charred to death and 18 others sustained burns. According to one of the petitioners U Marimuthu of Asoor in Kumbakonam, whose son Mohan Kumar died in the incident, after a great deal of court proceedings and negotiations, the government awarded a compensation starting from Rs 5 lakh each along with interest to the parents of the victims. The government deposited Rs 8.01 lakh in his account with the City Union Bank on December 21, 2016.

Even before the amount was deposited in his account, Tamilarasan came to Kumbakonam and summoned the parents and obtained two undated cheques and signed blank papers from each of the claimants. Thereafter, to Marimuthu’s shock, he received a message from the bank on December 22, 2016, saying that Rs 2.30 lakh was deducted from his account.

He rushed to the bank and found to his dismay that the counsel had misused the blank cheques and diverted the money to the accounts in his name and those in the names of his close relatives. It came to light thereafter that more than Rs 2 crore was transferred by misusing the said blank cheques. When the matter was taken up for consideration, the counsel for the claimants produced documents relating to the commission of the crime.

Chennai:

In 2004, M Sivaguru Prabakaran gave up his dream of pursuing an engineering degree as his family couldn’t afford the money to help him attend counselling session in Chennai.

What followed was an extraordinary tale of grit and determination that took the son of an alcoholic from Melaottankadu village in Pattukottai in Thanjavur district to the platforms of the St Thomas Mount Railway Station and the hallways of IITMadras. In the near future, as an IAS officer, he could possibly move to the hallowed precincts of Fort St George.

On Friday, Prabakaran secured 101st rank among 990 candidates selected by the UPSC in the civil services examination 2017. V Keerthi Vasan (29), L Madhubalan

(71) and S Balachander (129) were among the other candidates from Tamil Nadu who made the cut.

When TOI contacted Prabakaran on the phone, he was in the middle of getting congratulatory hugs from roommates at the house they shared in Thirumangalam. “I couldn’t continue my education after Class XII because of my family’s financial situation,” said Prabakaran.

An alcoholic father meant that much of the earning burden fell on his mother and sister, who made ends meet weaving coconut fronds. When he couldn’t pursue engineering, he decided to work to support the family. “I worked as a sawmill operator for two years and did a bit of farming. Whatever money I could muster, I spent some towards my family and saved some for my education. I wasn’t prepared to let go of my dreams,” he said.

I studied in Tamil medium,” Prabakaran said.

It was during this time, he reached Chennai in the hopes of cracking the IIT entrance examination. “A friend referred me to a tutor in St Thomas Mount who trained underprivileged students like me,” hesaid.

Studying under the tutor during the weekend, Prabakaran would take shelter in the platforms of the St Thomas Mount railway station. He would return to Vellore for the week to attend his college and made a small income working his off hours at a mobile rechargeoutlet.

He went on to crack the IIT-M entrance and finished his M.Tech programme as a top ranked student in 2014. “I had 9.0 GPA,” said Prabakaran. This was Prabakaran’s fourth attempt at clearing the UPSC exams. He identifies J Radhakrishnan, theTamilNadu government’s health department secretary, as an inspiration. “The desire to become an IAS officer was lit in mewhen IsawRadhakrishnan in 2004. I-T may give gutka case diary to CBI

Agency Likely To Register Fresh Cases

TIMES NEWS NETWORK 28.04.2018

Chennai:

The Income Tax department is now likely to hand over the ‘diary’ containing the names of people allowed the trade of gutka in Tamil Nadu after taking protection money (bribe) from a manufacturer to the CBI.

On Wednesday, the Madras high court had transferred the sensational case, allegedly involving state ministers and senior bureaucrats and top police officers, from the DVAC to CBI.

The country’s premier investigation agency is now likely to register fresh cases in the matter.

A CBI officer said, “We are not in a hurry to conclude the case, but we are closely following the developments. We will step into action against those involved.”

A team of CBI officials led by a superintendent of police under the direct supervision of the joint director has begun probing the case. The DVAC officials have sent the case diary along with the documents and evidence collected to the CBI.

Earlier, despite repeated requests, the I-T sleuths had refused to share information from the diary, seized from gutka manufacturer Madhava Rao, with the DVAC officers as it contained the names of two senior police officers of the rank of DGP as they believed the DVAC would be biased in investigating “two of their own”. The DVAC is part of the police force. The Income Tax officials had told DVAC officers that they would submit all the documents they possessed in the case before the trial court concerned after a chargesheet was filed.

Meanwhile, DMK working president and former deputy chief minister M K Stalin has demanded that the CBI director create a special investigation cell comprising officers from other states to ensure a fair probe. The party suspects that top politicians and police officers may try to influence the investigation. It was the DMK’s J Anbazhagan, who represents Chepauk in the state assembly, who sought a direction from the high court to transfer the case from DV&AC to CBI.
