In the wake of multiple skeletons tumbling out of Anna University’s closet, higher education minister K P Anbalagan tells Siddharth Prabhakar that the government is probing re-evaluation at all universities and will not spare any official involved in such scams.

A ₹63 crore contract was given without tender process with many irregularities by Anna University in 2016. Were you not intimated about such a high value contract?


This contract should have gone through the purchase committee since it was a huge amount. Everyone’s permission should have been taken. If it has not been taken, it’s an irregularity. But as far as universities are concerned, it’s under the control of a vicechancellor or a convener committee when there is no VC. This controller of examinations (G V Uma) was appointed in 2015 before I became minister.

The then secretary and chairman of the convener committee had raised questions about the process in which the contract had been awarded. Yet the contract was passed. Will you initiate action against then higher education secretary?

We have already directed action against the university officials involved. We will check which officer was holding the secretary’s post.

Are you investigating if the re-evaluation scam is happening in all universities in Tamil Nadu?

We now know what the modus operandi is. If such a scam happens in one university, we can’t assume it’s happening elsewhere as the CoEs are different. But we are monitoring the increase in marks after reevaluation at all universities.

TOI has reported about the I-transcripts company which claims other universities as its clients without signing MoUs with them. What action will be initiated by the government against such companies?

It has not come to my knowledge. Please send the details to me. I shall look into it.

Do these companies have a link to persons in the higher education ministry because of which rules were bent?

Officials in the ministry might not know about these things. This happens within the university. If there is indeed a link to officials in the higher education department, it is wrong.

The DVAC has registered an FIR against former Anna University vice-chancellor M Rajaram and now against Uma. Both were appointed during the previous government. Will you probe the then minister and officials?

We will investigate anyone found responsible. The government is not afraid of investigating any wrongdoer. There will be no compromise. We inquire into any irregularities that crop up during any vice-chancellor’s tenure.

Are you going slow on retired vice-chancellors facing allegations?

That is a misconception. We check the veracity of every allegation that comes up. We are also taking action against former VCs.

But the action is being initiated by the university’s internal committees, not by the DVAC which has more powers

We are giving the information to the DVAC as well. For an example, in the (ex-Bharathiar University vice-chancellor ) Ganapathi case, we were conducting enquiries against him earlier and gave information to vigilance after verification. We will not spare anyone.

After a week’s lull, roads around Kauvery Hospital in Chennai swelled with DMK cadres and well-wishers on Monday evening over news of a “decline” in the health condition of DMK president M Karunanidhi.

The former chief minister and DMK patriarch has been in the intensive care unit of the hospital since July

29. A two-paragraph press release signed by hospital executive director Dr Aravindan Selvaraj said the medical condition of the 94-year-old former chief minister had been on the decline. “Maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge, considering his age-related ailments. He is on continuous monitoring and is being treated with active medical support. His response to the medical intervention over the next 24 hours will determine the prognosis,” it said.

Meanwhile, most of his family members and senior party leaders remained at the hospital on Monday. Union minister for road transport & highways Nitin Gadkari, TNCC president Thirunavukkarasar, Dravidar Kazhagam leader K Veeramani and senior DMK leader K Anbazhagan visited the ailing leader.

Wife Dayalu Ammal visits hosp with son


Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal was on Monday afternoon brought to Kauvery Hospital on a wheelchair. It was her first visit to the hospital since the DMK chief was hospitalized in the wee hours of July 29. She was wheeled in by her son M K Tamilarasu.

Hundreds of people outside the hospital raised slogans, “Ezhunthuvaa thalaivaa ... polaam polaam Arivalayam polaam ... Gopalapuram polaam …” (Get up and come ... let’s go to Arivalayam ... let’s go to Gopalapuram).

As the crowd swelled, police introduced traffic diversions on TTK Road and deployed more personnel. Police also blocked traffic coming towards the traffic signal in front of the Hospital up to Desikan Salai on Luz Church Road, but vehicles were allowed on the other side. A posse of police personnel was posted and barricades placed to ensure smooth entry and exit of vehicles to the hospital. Police personnel were seen atop the Alwarpet flyover monitoring the crowd.

1 driver, multiple buses: MTC hit by scam

: Automated public transport could be a generation away, but Metropolitan Transportation Corporation records showed remarkable progress on this front by some staff — including one driver who operated multiple buses simultaneously, earning separate overtime wages for each vehicle.

Alas for the transport corporation, and taxpayers who pay the wages of its employees, MTC officials recently discovered that the feat was evidence of a payroll scam that the seemingly superdexterous driver and six other staff members had successfully pulled off since January.

MTC suspended all seven after an internal probe revealed that they exploited a wide gap in the allowances of permanent and temporary staff to fudge the name of the driver to show him on duty on various routes and pocket the difference in wages, an MTC official said.

The driver, Sudarshanam, received multiple allowances for operating buses from Koyambedu to Kelambakkam and T Nagar to Mogappair at the same time, the records show.

Gilbert, a temporary bus driver basis, and conductor Kumar from Anna Nagar depot, were supposed to operate a bus on route 147B on May 19. The conductor, according to MTC rules, entered details of the total collection in ticket sales and the driver’s name in the log sheet and way bill. But he substituted Gilbert’s name with Sudarshanam, who works out of the same depot.

A computer operator who had seen Sudarshanam organize a labour union event all morning that day, was taken aback when he saw his name in the records. Realizing that something was fishy, he informed the branch manager. The conductor stated that Sudarshanam forced him to enter his name instead of Gilbert’s name.



10 MTC staffers suspended for fudging duty log entries

MTC pays temporary drivers ₹500 per trip and permanent drivers ₹1,000 in overtime wages for the same job, the official said. By entering Sudarshanam’s name, the scamsters could collect ₹1,000, pay Gilbert ₹500 and hand over ₹500 to Sudarshanam — even though he would not be on the route during the shift.

Other sources at MTC said Sudarshanam and his accomplices managed to pull off the scam easily for months, but officials finally got wise to the data fudging game on May 19 when another conductor who was a part of the scam and was assigned on route 570 had also shown Sudharshanam as the driver instead of a temporary appointee.

A probe by officials revealed that Sudarshanam had adopted a similar strategy on route 27B, the sources said. After gathering conclusive evidence, MTC earlier this month suspended 10 staff members — four drivers, including three hired on a temporary basis, three conductors and three computer operators — from Anna Nagar depot in connection with the scam.

The computer operators were cleared of the charges; an inquiry is pending against seven others.

MTC has unearthed similar scams in the Vadapalani and Ambattur bus depot. The transport corporation suspended and later transferred five staff members for the racket at the Vadapalani depot, in which they illegally pocketed ₹45 lakh.

HC: Return original certificates withheld for discontinuing PG

MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court has directed the dean of the Government Madurai Medical College to return the original certificates of a doctor which was withheld after she discontinued the post-graduate course at the college owing to personal reasons. 

The college had demanded Dr M Aarthy to Rs 10 lakh in accordance with the agreement bond and refused to part with the certificates.

Arathy had joined PG course in anatomy in 2016 and discontinued owing to personal reasons. When she asked for her certificates- class 10, 12, MBBS degree certificate, MBBS marksheet, house surgeon completion certificate, Medical Council registration and community certificate, the authorities rejected her application in a letter dated April 17, 2017.

Justice M S Ramesh noted that there exists an agreement bond which states that if a candidate discontinues the course any time before completion, he/she has to repay the amount received as stipend and pay appropriate discontinuation fee.

“There is no clause through which the petitioner has agreed that her original certificates could be retained till the amount is paid. In the absence of such a clause, the college is not justified in withholding the certificates,” the court observed, adding that it is unfortunate that the authorities chose to retain the documents for non-payment of penalty.

The court also refused to agree with the government pleader that the authorities have the right by citing a clause in the prospectus. “The said clause is an unilateral clause as the petitioner has no other option to join a PG course without purchasing the prospectus,” the court pointed out.

Holding that the authorities have no legal right to withhold the documents, Justice Ramesh directed the dean of the college to handover Arathy’s original certificates and also made it clear that it has not expressed views with regard to the authorities’ right to claim penalty or discontinuation fee.

அரசியல் என்பது தொண்டாக இருந்த காலம் போய் தொழிலாக மாறிப்போனதன் விளைவுதான், சென்னையில் அரங்கேறிய பிரியாணி கலாட்டா சம்பவம். கட்சியின் பெயர் சொல்லி பிரியாணி கேட்டு, கடை ஊழியர்களைக் கட்சி ஊழியர்கள் தாக்கும் அந்தக் காட்சிகள் அரசியல் மீதான மதிப்பை மேலும் குலைக்கவே வழிவகுக்கின்றன.

அரசியல் கட்சிகள் மீது மக்களுக்கு மதிப்பு குறையவும், வெறுப்புணர்வு உருவானதற்கும் சிறிதும் பெரிதுமாகப் பல காரணங்கள் உண்டு. பல கட்சிகளில், தங்களிடம் உறுப்பினராக இருப்பவர்களின் செயல்பாடுகளைப் பற்றி தெளிவான தகவல்கள் இல்லை. சொல்லப்போனால், குற்றச் செயல்களில் ஈடுபட்டுப் பணம் ஈட்டுவதற்காக அரசியல் பின்னணி தேடுபவர்களுக்கும், கட்டப்பஞ்சாயத்து செய்து வணிகர்களையும், தொழிலதிபர்களையும் மிரட்டுபவர்களுக்கும் பதவி கொடுத்து அழகு பார்க்கின்ற கட்சிகளும் உண்டு.


இதன் விளைவுகளை மக்கள் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் கண்கூடாகப் பார்க்கின்றனர். அதனால்தான், அரசியல் என்பது தொண்டு என்ற எண்ணமெல்லாம் மறைந்து, அது ஒரு கொள்ளை லாபத் தொழில் என்பதுபோல ஆகிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

சென்னையின் கடை ஒன்றில், கண்காணிப்பு கேமராவில் பதிவான இந்த பிரியாணி அடாவடி சம்பவத்தை இன்று உலகம் முழுக்க சமூக ஊடகங்களில் அந்தக் கட்சியின் எதிரிகளும் அதிருப்தியாளர்களும் உற்சாகமாகப் பரப்பிக்கொண்டிருக்கின்றார்கள். இந்த அவமானச் சம்பவத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட கட்சியும், நெருக்கடியிலிருந்து மீள்வதற்காக பிரியாணி கேட்டு அடிதடி நடத்தியவர்களை அடிப்படை உறுப்பினர் பதவியிலிருந்து நீக்கியிருக்கிறது. அக்கட்சியின் செயல் தலைவர் நேரடியாகவே பாதிக்கப்பட்ட உணவகத்தினரைச் சந்தித்துப் பேசிவந்திருக்கிறார்.

இது ஏதோ அந்த ஒரு கட்சி மட்டுமே தொடர்புடைய விஷயம் அல்ல. கட்சிப் பொதுக் கூட்டத்துக்கும், மாநாட்டுக்கும் நிதி கொடுக்கச் சொல்லி, வேறு சில கட்சிக்காரர்கள் கடைக்காரர்களை மிரட்டிய காட்சிகளும் இதேபோல் சமூக ஊடகங்களில் பரவியது உண்டு. ஒரு உறுப்பினரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுப்பதற்கு முன்பு அவருடைய தகுதி பற்றி குறைந்தபட்ச விசாரணையாவது செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற பொறுப்பு கட்சிகளுக்கு இருக்கிறது. கம்யூனிஸ்ட் கட்சிகளில் மட்டுமே அது நடைமுறையில் இருக்கிறது.

கூட்டம் சேர்த்துக் காட்டினால் போதும் என்ற வெறியில், ‘யார் வேண்டுமானாலும் எங்கள் கட்சியில் இணையலாம்’ என்றும், ‘அலைபேசி வாயிலாக ஒரு மிஸ்டுகால் கொடுத்தாலே போதும், உறுப்பினர் ஆக்கிவிடுகிறோம்’ என்றும் துரத்தித் துரத்தி ஆள் பிடிப்பவர்களுக்கு இந்த பிரியாணி சம்பவம் சமீபத்து எச்சரிக்கை. இதில் இன்னொரு கொடுமை, ஒரே நபர் எத்தனை கட்சிகளில் வேண்டுமானாலும் உறுப்பினர் அட்டை வைத்திருக்க முடியும். இதற்கும் கண்காணிப்பு, கட்டுப்பாடெல்லாம் கிடையாது என்பதாகும்.

இது கணினியின் காலம். தாங்கள் நடத்துவது அரசியல் தொண்டுதானே தவிர, தொழில் அல்ல என்று உறுதியாக நிரூபிக்க விரும்பும் கட்சிகள் - தங்கள் கொள்கைகள் மற்றும் திட்டங்களோடு, ஒவ்வொரு உறுப்பினரின் விவரங்களையும்கூட மக்கள் பார்வைக்கு வெளியிட முடியும். அதில், குற்றச்செயல் புரிந்தவர்கள் பற்றி ஆதாரத்தோடு யாரிடமாவது தகவல் இருந்தால், அதைக் கட்சியின் பார்வைக்கு மக்கள் கொண்டுவரவும் வழிவகை செய்ய முடியும். எவ்வளவுக்கு எவ்வளவு குற்றத்தன்மையிலிருந்து ஒவ்வொரு கட்சியும் தன்னை அந்நியமாக வைத்திருக்கிறதோ, அவ்வளவுக்கு அவ்வளவே இனி அது மக்கள் மத்தியில் செல்வாக்கைப் பெறும்.

காற்றில் கரையாத நினைவுகள் 22: ஊருக்குப் போவது

முன்பெல்லாம் பிறந்த கிராமத்தைவிட்டு வெளியே வராமல், தங்களுடைய வாழ்வையே முடித்துக் கொண்டவர்கள் உண்டு. அதிகபட்சம் சம்பந்தி வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றிருப்பார்கள். சொந்தத்திலேயே பெண் கொடுப்பது அன்றைய வழக்கம். அதிகத் தொலைவில் இருக்கும் மாப்பிள்ளைக்கு பெண் கொடுக்க மாட்டார்கள்.

இன்று வெளிநாட்டு மாப்பிள்ளை என்றால் என்ன பணி செய்தாலும் கவலைப் படாமல் பெண் கொடுக்கும் வழக்கம் இருக்கிறது. பெண் கொடுத்து, பெண் வாங்குவதும் நடைமுறையில் இருந்தது. மருமகளும், மருமகனும் ஒரே வீட்டில். பெரிய நகரங்களைப் பலர் திரைப்படங்களில் மட்டுமே பார்த்திருப்பார்கள். பட்டணம் போவது என்று சென்னைக்கு வருவதையே சிலாகித்துச் சொல்வது வழக்கம்.

கால்களே வாகனம்

நாங்கள் மும்பை சென்றிருந்தபோது என் நண்பர் ஒருவர், ‘எங்கள் பாட்டியை இங்கே கொண்டுவந்து விட்டால் திரும்பி வரவே தெரியாது’ என்று சொன்னார். அந்தக் காட்சி நினைத்துப் பார்க்கும்போதே கொடூரமாக இருந்தது.

அடிக்கடி வெளியில் சாப்பிடுவது கவுரவக் குறைச்சலாக இருந்த காலம் அது. ‘வாங்கித் தின்னானாம், வீங்கிச் செத்தானாம்’ என்று எங்கள் பக்கம் ஒரு சொலவடையே உண்டு. வெளியில் சாப்பிட்டு கட்டுப்படியாகாது என்பதே அதன் பொருள்.

பெரும்பாலும் நடையே வாகனம். எவ்வளவு நடக்க முடியுமோ அவ்வளவு தூரம்தான் செல்வார்கள். பணத்துக்காக உறவுகளிடம் தனி மதிப்பு இல்லாத காலம். குழந்தைகளுக்கு அத்தை, மாமா என்று பிடிப்பு ஏற்பட காலாண்டு, அரையாண்டு, முழுப்பரீட்சை விடுமுறைகளில் உறவினர் வீட்டுக்குப் பயணப் படுவது வழக்கம்.

புதிய சூழல் புதிய தெளிவுபுது ஊரில் புதுப்புது நண்பர்கள் கிடைப்பார்கள். புதிய சூழல். நிறைய விளையாட்டு. அப்பா, அம்மாவின் சகல நேரக் கண்காணிப்பில் இருந்து விடுதலை. சில சிறுவர்கள் தாத்தா, பாட்டி வீட்டிலேயே வளர்வது உண்டு. அவர்கள் அதிக சுதந்திரத்தோடு இருப்பார்கள். எதையும் அருகில் இருந்து பார்ப்பதைவிட தொலைவில் இருந்து பார்க்கும்போது தெளிவு கூடுதலாக இருக்கும். பாட்டி வீட்டில் வளரும் பிள்ளைகள் எதிர்காலத்தில் சுயசிந்தனையோடு இருப்பதும் உண்டு.

சொந்தக்காரர்கள் வீட்டுக்குப் போவது என்றால் சின்னத் துணிப் பையில் இரண்டு சட்டை, இரண்டு காற்சட்டை, இரண்டு உள்ளாடைகள் ஆகியவை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளப்படும். ஒன்று கொடியில், ஒன்று மடியில், மற்றொன்று இடையில். அவ்வளவுதான் மொத்த உருப்படிகள். படுக்கிற இடமோ பகிர்கிற உணவோ முக்கியமில்லை. உணர்வுக்கு முன் உணவு எம்மாத்திரம்!

அங்கு புதிதுபுதிதாய்க் கண்டறியும் அனுபவத்தில் ஆனந்தம் மேலிடும். ஒருநாளும் பெற்றோரை நினைத்து பிள்ளைகள் ஏங்காது. இன்று ஊருக்கு அனுப்பினால் பிள்ளைகள் சுவரில் அடித்த பந்துபோல திரும்பி வந்துவிடுகின்றனர்.

பள்ளிச் சிற்றுலா...

முன்பெல்லாம் பள்ளியில் அரிதாகச் சுற்றுலாவுக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்வார்கள். எங்கள் பகுதியில் இருந்த தென்னிந்திய கண்ணாடித் தொழிற்சாலைக்கு ஒரு

முறை எங்கள் பள்ளியில் இருந்து கூட்டிச் சென்றார்கள். அதுவே பேரனுபவமாக இருந்தது.

பள்ளியில் ஒருமுறை மேட்டூர் அணைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார்கள். உயர்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் சாத்தனூர், செஞ்சிக்கோட்டை போன்றவற்றுக்கு சுற்றுலா அறிவித்தார்கள். இதுபோன்ற நிகழ்வுகளில் மூத்தவர்களுக்கே முன்னுரிமை. ஒருமுறை என் சகோதரி கன்னியாகுமரி சுற்றுலாவுக்குச் சென்று, வீட்டுக்கு என்ன வாங்குவது எனத் தெரியாமல், அங்கு விற்ற விதவிதமான வண்ண மண்களை வாங்கிகொண்டு வந்தார். அதை வைத்து என்ன செய்வது என்று வீட்டுக்குள் பெரிய விவாதமே நடந்தது.

10 நாட்கள் முகாம்

நாங்கள் மிதிவண்டி எடுத்துக்கொண்டு சேலம் அம்மாபாளையத்திள் இருக்கிற மாமாங்கத்துக்குச் செல்வோம். அங்கு ஒரு குளத்தில் வற்றாத நீர். ஜடாயுவுக்கு ஈமக்கிரியை செய்ய ராமன் விட்ட அம்பால் ஏற்பட்ட நீர்நிலை அது என்பது ஐதீகம். அதில் நீந்திக் குளிப்போம். அதேபோல சித்தர் கோயிலுக்கு சைக்கிளில் செல்வோம். அங்கு வற்றாத கிணறுகள் உண்டு. அதில் திருப்தி வரும் வரை குளியல் போடுவோம்.

நான் தேசிய மாணவர் படைக்காக சங்ககிரிக்கு பத்து நாட்கள் முகாம் சென்றது இன்னும் நினைவில் இருக்கிறது. ஒரு நாள் சாலை போடுகிற பணியில் ஈடுபட்டோம். திரும்பி வரும்போது வேலைநிறுத்தப் போராட்டம் (ஹர்த்தால்) காரணமாக சரக்குந்தில் திரும்பி வந்தோம்.

சேலத்தில் நடக்கும் கண்காட்சிக்கு தொடக்கப் பள்ளி மாணவர்களை ஆசிரியர் அழைத்துச்செல்வது உண்டு. ஒரு ரூபாய் கட்டணம்.

ஒருமுறை கண்காட்சியில் அனைத்தையும் கண்டுகளித்த பிறகு வகுப்பாசிரி யர் கவலையோடு காணப்பட்டார். ஒரு மாணவன் பணமே கொடுக்காமல் கண்காட்சிக்கு வந்துவிட்டான். பிறகு கணக்கைப் பார்த்து கண்டு பிடித்தார். யாரெனத் தெரிந்ததும் அவனை அழைத்து விசாரித்தாரே தவிர, வெகுண்டெழ வில்லை. அந்த மாணவன் அதற்குப் பிறகு பள்ளிக்கு வரவேயில்லை.

பெரியம்மாவும் சிறுகிழங்கும்

சொந்தக்காரர்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வரும்போது கிடைத்ததையோ, முடிந்த தையோ வாங்கி வருவார்கள். அதற்கும் அவர்களுக்குத் தருகிற உபசரிப்புக்கும் எந்தத் தொடர்பும் இருக்காது. எங்கள் பெரியம்மா ஒருவர் தீபாவளி நேரத்தில் சிறுகிழங்கு கொண்டு வரு வார். இன்னோர் உறவினர் பனைவெல்லம் கொண்டு வருவார்.

ஊருக்குச் சென்றால் திரும்பி வரும் வரை சேதி எதுவும் தெரியாது. அது பற்றி வீட்டினர் கவலைப்பட்டதும் கிடையாது. அன்று இன்றிருப்பதைப் போல தொலைபேசியோ, அலைபேசியோ இல்லை. இப்போதெல்லாம் நிமிடத்துக்கு நிமிடம் குழந்தைகள் என்ன செய்கிறார்கள் என்று நேர்முக வர்ணனை நடக்கிறது. அவர்கள் சொன்ன இடத்துக்குத்தான் சென்றிருக்கிறார்களா என்று பார்க்கும் வசதியும் வந்துவிட்டது.

கல்லூரியில் படிக்கும் சமயத்தில் புதுச்சேரிக்கு சுற்றுலா சென்றபோது, சில மாணவர்கள் முதன்முறையாக கடலைப் பார்த்தனர். அதைவிட்டு வரவே அவர்களுக்கு மனம் வரவில்லை. ஒகேனக்கல்லை முதன்முறையாக அதிசயமாய்ப் பார்த்து ஆச்சரியத்தில் மூழ்கினோம். அதில் குளித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தவர்களை பேருந்துக்கு அழைத்து வருவது பெரும் பாடாய் இருந்தது.

வேளாங்கண்ணி, திருப்பதி, நாகூர்

இன்றைய சிறுவர்களோ நயாகரா அருவியையே காணொலியில் பார்த்துவிடுவதால் அவர்களுக்கு அந்த அருவிகள் வியக்கும் வீழ்ச்சிகளாய் இருப்பதில்லை. பார்க்கிற பழக்கம், அதிசயிக்கும் குழந்தை இயல்பை நீர்த்துப்போகச் செய்துவிடுகிறது.

அன்றைய நாளில் மொத்தக் குடும்பமும் ஊருக்குப் போவது அபூர்வம். அப்படிச் செல்வது பெரும்பாலும் கோயில்களுக்காகத்தான் இருக்கும். அப்படிச் செல்வது கூட அநேகமாக திருப்பதி, பழநி, வேளாங்கண்ணி, நாகூராகத்தான் இருக்கும்.

ஒரு மாதம் முன்பிருந்தே அதுபற்றிக் கற்பனையில் பேசிக் களித்திருப்பார்கள். இரண்டு காசு, மூன்று காசு என மிச்சமாகிற சில்லறையை அங்கிருக்கும் யாசகர்களுக்குப் போட முடிந்து வைப்பார்கள். எங்கு காலை உணவை சாப்பிடுவது என்பது தொடங்கி சிந்தனை விரியும். சென்று வந்ததற்கு அடையாளமாக சில வீடுகளில் மொட் டைத் தலைகள் பளபளக்கும்.

கட்டுச்சோற்றுப் பயணம்

இப்போதெல்லாம் குழந்தைகள் மொட்டை அடித்துக் கொள்ளத் தயாராக இருப்பதில்லை. அப்பாக்கள்தான் மொட்டை அடித்துக் கொள்கிறார்கள். அப்போதெல்லாம் யாராவது காசிக்கு யாத்திரை சென்று வந்தால், அவர்களுடைய காலில் விழுந்து வணங்குவதை புண்ணியம் என்று கருதினார்கள்.

எளிய குடும்பங்கள் கட்டுச்சோறோடு பயணம் செய்யும். மூன்று வேளையும் புளிச் சோறு. டெல்லியில் இருந்து தொடர்வண்டியில் வருகிறபோது எளியவர் ஒருவர் அத்தனை வேளையும் பொட்டலம் கட்டியிருந்த பூரிக் கிழங்கை உண்பதைப் பார்த்தேன்.

அன்று விமானப் பயணம் மாபெரும் கனவு. இன்று வெளிநாடு சகஜம். இன்றைய நாளில் தண்ணீர் குடிப்பதைப் போல சர்வ சாதாரணமாக கோடை விடுமுறையில் மலைவாழ் தலங்களுக்கு மக்கள் செல்கின்றனர். அதற்காகவே சீட்டுப் போடுகின்றனர். ஆண்டுக்கொரு ஊர் என கண்டுகளிக்கின்றனர். வார இறுதிகளில் அருகில் இருக்கும் இடங்களுக்கு சிற்றுலா சென்று வரு கின்றனர்.

எத்தனையோ இடங்களுக்குச் சென்றாலும் அங்கெல்லாம் தங்கள் சொந்த ஊரையும் சிலர் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு செல்வதுதான் வியப்பாக இருக்கிறது!
