Apple on Wednesday unveiled the iPhone XS, a premium model with a 5.8-inch screen, and the iPhone XS Max a new big-screen premium model with a 6.5-inch screen. The iPhone XS Max (what a mouthful!) is the company’s biggest-ever smartphone. The XS models are generally sped-up versions of last year’s iPhone X, Apple’s first $999 model. Apple emphasised the phones’ advanced processor, durable glass and so-called Super Retina OLED display with a wide colour gamut. It’s obvious why Apple and other phone makers like Samsung keep increasing the size of their phone screens: Phones with bigger screens are selling well. When presented with the choice between a small phone and a bigger one, most people will go with the latter. That’s similar to how just about everyone wants a big-screen TV.

Yet for mobile phones, there are tradeoffs. For one, the phones get more difficult to use with one hand. With last year’s 5.8-inch iPhone X, it was difficult to reach your thumb across the screen to type a keystroke or hit a button inside an app. Those usability tradeoffs will probably persist in these new models.

The larger screens raise an important question about design and usability. Will Apple do much in the near future to improve one-handed use as its devices keep getting larger? When Apple’s screen sizes started getting much larger with the iPhone 6 in 2014, the company released a software shortcut called Reachability, where you tapped the home button twice to lower the top of the screen and make it easier to reach buttons up there.

That feature still exists for the brand-new iPhones, but the lack of a home button makes it more difficult to use — instead of double tapping the home button, now you swipe down from the bottom of the screen.

Apple Watch becomes more of a health device

Apple introduced a new version of its watch that it’s calling the Apple Watch Series 4, which it has designed to be more of health aid.

It’s the first time the company has redesigned the device since it was introduced in 2015. The new watch is slightly thinner than the previous version, but the black frame around the screen — what are know as the “bezels” — has been removed to create a larger display area. Significantly, Apple said the new watch has a faster processor and better health and motion sensors. For instance, the watch can detect when a wearer has fallen down, a leading cause of injuries. Court orders ₹2cr relief to widow of doc killed on duty

The Uttarakhand high court on Wednesday directed the state government to pay compensation of ₹1,99,09,000 (one crore, ninetynine lakh and nine thousand rupees), along with interest of 7.5% per annum from the date of filing of the petition in 2017, to the widow of Dr Sunil Kumar, who was shot dead while on duty at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Jaspur in Udham Singh Nagar district on April 20, 2016.

The high court also awarded “extraordinary pension” to the petitioner Sarita Singh as per the provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Civil Services (Extraordinary Pension) (First Amendment) Rules, 1981, as adopted by Uttarakhand, within 10 weeks, along with arrears at the rate of 8.5% interest per annum.

The division bench of acting Chief Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari also ordered that the provisions of the ‘Uttarakhand Medicare Service Persons and Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2013’, be enforced in letter and spirit.

The order was reserved on September 8 and a certified copy was released on Wednesday. The high court also observed that the deceased, whose last drawn salary was ₹1,27,300, was due for promotion to the post of chief medical officer (CMO) and his salary would have increased to ₹1,91,000 thereafter. Govt docs to go on strike for pay hike on Sept 21

Government doctors will boycott working barring emergency services across the state on September 21 if the government does not hike their salaries on par with their counterparts at the Centre.

On Wednesday, more than 3,000 government doctors — including many heads of departments and senior professors — marched from Chepauk to St Fort George holding placards, posters and banners demanding better pay. They handed over a memorandum to the chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s office explaining the difference in pay between the Central and state government doctors.

Government doctors, who teach in medical colleges and carry out patient services, are paid less than teachers in state-run veterinary, agriculture and arts and science colleges, the joint action committee of Government Doctors Association said. Government doctors get their first pay band revision in their eight year of service and have to wait till 15th year for promotions. “For nearly a decade now, we have been demanding for pay parity with Central government doctors and time-bound promotions. We have held talks with the health department and finance department. We were told that the health department will make recommendations to the finance, nothing happened,” said JAC-GDA head Dr K Senthil.

The basic salary for doctors in state and central services is the same when they join duty, but doctors in central government services receive promotions in four, nine, 13 and 20 years, compared to eight, 15, 17 and 20 years in the state government, he said.

For nearly a month, government doctors have been boycotting classes, skipping routine meetings and audits, and have not been updating their daily reports. “Nevertheless, we did not stop patient services. We expected government to give us a favourable reply. We are now forced to declare one day strike,” said Dr A Ramalingam.

On September 21, doctors from all government hospitals from primary health centre to medical colleges will boycott OP services and elective surgeries.

6,000 Brands Likely To Be Affected

The health ministry has banned the manufacture, sale and distribution of 328 fixed dose combinations (FDCs) of drugs with immediate effect and restricted another

six. This brings to an end a protracted legal battle between manufacturers of these combination drugs and the ministry, which has been working since 2016 to get these “irrational” and “unsafe” drugs banned.

Among the roughly 6,000 brands estimated to be affected by the ban are popular drugs like the painkiller Saridon, skin cream Panderm, combination diabetes drug Gluconorm PG, antibiotic Lupidiclox and antibacterial Taxim AZ.

The government had banned 344 FDCs on March 10, 2016 and later added five more to this list. However, manufacturers of these drugs contested the ban in various high courts and the Supreme Court. The SC on December 15, 2017 asked for the matter to be examined by the Drugs Technical Advisory Board. DTAB concluded in its report that there was no therapeutic justification for the ingredients in 328 FDCs and that these could be a risk to people. The board recommended banning them.

In the case of six other FDCs, the board recommended restricted manufacture and sale subject to certain conditions based on their therapeutic justification. The SC ruled that the government could not use the DTAB report to prohibit 15 of the 344 drugs in the original list as these have been manufactured in India since before 1988.


‘Banned FDCs account for about ₹2,500 crore & only tip of the iceberg’

This exception covered several popular cough syrups, painkillers and cold medication with sales amounting to over ₹740 crore annually. However, the court told the ministry that it could still look into the safety of these 15 drugs by initiating a fresh investigation if it wanted to ban them.

The All India Drug Action Network, a civil society group working on safety and access to medicines which was one of the petitioners in the Supreme Court case, welcomed the ban and sought swift action from the government on the 15 excluded FDCs. “The banned FDCs account for about ₹2,500 crore and represent only the tip of the iceberg. In our estimate, the market for unsafe, problematic FDCs in India is at least one-fourth of the total pharma market which is valued at ₹1.3 trillion,” said AIDAN in a statement. It also sought a review of all FDCs in the market in the interest of patient safety as recommended by the Kokate Committee, constituted by the health ministry to examine FDCs.

Meanwhile, many large drug companies have claimed that over the last couple of years they have either phased out such drugs or changed the combination. The FDCs in question are less than 2%, they claim.

புதுடில்லி : 'முன்னாள் பிரதமர் ராஜிவ் கொலை வழக்கில் தண்டனை பெற்றுள்ளவர்களை விடுதலை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற தமிழக அரசின் பரிந்துரையின் அடிப்படையில், தமிழக கவர்னர், தானாக முடிவெடுக்க முடியாது. மத்திய அரசின் ஒப்புதலைப் பெற வேண்டும்' என, மத்திய உள்துறை அமைச்சகம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.



காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியைச் சேர்ந்த, முன்னாள் பிரதமர் ராஜிவ் கொலை வழக்கில் தண்டனை பெற்றவர்களை விடுவிப்பது தொடர்பான வழக்கு, உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தில் நடந்து வந்தது. இந்த வழக்கை விசாரித்த உச்ச நீதிமன்றம், 'ஆயுள் தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள பேரறிவாளனின் கருணை மனு மீது, கவர்னர் முடிவெடுக்க வேண்டும்' என, சமீபத்தில் கூறியது.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, 'ராஜிவ் கொலையாளிகள் ஏழு பேரையும் விடுதலை செய்ய வேண்டும்' என, தமிழக அமைச்சரவை கூட்டத்தில் முடிவு எடுக்கப்பட்டு, அது தொடர்பாக, கவர்னருக்கு பரிந்துரை செய்யப்பட்டது.

இந்த விவகாரம் தொடர்பாக, மத்திய உள்துறை அமைச்சக மூத்த அதிகாரிகள் கூறியதாவது: மத்திய புலனாய்வு அமைப்புகள் விசாரித்த வழக்குகளில் தண்டனை பெற்றவர்களை, முன்னதாகவே விடுவிப்பது அல்லது தண்டனையைக் குறைப்பது குறித்து, மத்திய அரசின் கருத்தை கேட்க வேண்டும்.

ராஜிவ் கொலையாளிகளை விடுவித்தால், அது தவறான முன்னுதாரணமாக மாறி விடும் என்பதில் மத்திய அரசு உறுதியுடன் உள்ளது. ராஜிவ் கொலையாளிகளை விடுவிக்கும் தமிழக அரசின் பரிந்துரையின் அடிப்படையில், தமிழக கவர்னர் தானாக எந்த முடிவையும் எடுக்க முடியாது. மத்திய அரசின் ஆலோசனைகளை பெற வேண்டிய கட்டாயம், அவருக்கு உள்ளது. இவ்வாறு அந்த அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

டீசல் வாங்கினால், 'லேப் - டாப்' இலவசம்

பர்வானி : 'மத்திய பிரதேச மாநிலத்தில், பெட்ரோல், டீசல் வாங்குவோருக்கு, 'பைக், லேப் - டாப்' உள்ளிட்ட விலையுயர்ந்த பொருட்கள் இலவசமாக வழங்கப்படும்' என, பெட்ரோல் பங்க் உரிமையாளர்கள் அறிவித்துள்ளனர்.

முடிவு :

மத்திய பிரதேசத்தில், பெட்ரோலுக்கு, 27 சதவீதமும்; டீசலுக்கு, 22 சதவீதமும், 'வாட்' வரி வசூலிக்கப்படுகிறது. இதனால் இங்கு, பெட்ரோல் லிட்டர், 86.60 ரூபாய்க்கும் டீசல், 76.95 ரூபாய்க்கும் விற்பனையாகிறது. இது, நேற்றைய விலை நிலவரம். இதன் காரணமாக, இங்குள்ள பெட்ரோல் பங்க்குகளில், லாரி மற்றும் சரக்கு வாகன ஓட்டிகள், பெட்ரோல், டீசல் போடுவதை தவிர்க்கின்றனர்.

மேலும், 5,000 லிட்டர் வாங்கினால், மொபைல் போனுடன், சைக்கிள் அல்லது கை கடிகாரம் வழங்கப்படும். 15 ஆயிரம் லிட்டருக்கு மேல் வாங்கினால், பீரோ, சோபா செட் அல்லது 100 கிராம் வெள்ளி நாணயம் தரப்படும்.

ஆயிரம் லிட்டர் :

இதுதவிர, 25 ஆயிரம் லிட்டருக்கு மேல் வாங்கினால், வாஷிங் மிஷினும், 50,000 லிட்டர் வாங்கினால், 'ஏசி' அல்லது லேப் - டாப் வழங்குவோம். ஒரு லட்சம் லிட்டருக்கு மேல் வாங்கினால், ஒரு ஸ்கூட்டர் இலவசமாக வழங்கப்படும். ஒரு முறை இலவச பரிசு பெற்றவர்கள், அடுத்த இலக்குக்கு செல்ல முடியாது. இவ்வாறு, அவர் கூறினார்.

சென்னையை அடுத்த ஜமீன் பல்லாவரத்தில் வங்கி மேலாளர் யோகசேரன் (வயது 55) வீட்டுக்குள் கடந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை மாலை முகமூடி கும்பல் நுழைந்து வீட்டில் இருந்தவர்களை கட்டிப்போட்டு 206 பவுன் நகைகளை கொள்ளையடித்து சென்றது.

இதில் துப்புதுலக்க சென்னை மாநகர போலீஸ் கமிஷனர் ஏ.கே.விஸ்வநாதன் உத்தரவின் பேரில் சென்னை தெற்கு இணை கமிஷனர் மகேஸ்வரி, பரங்கிமலை துணை கமிஷனர் முத்துசாமி மேற்பார்வையில் பல்லாவரம் உதவி கமிஷனர் தேவராஜ் தலைமையில் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர்கள் சாம் வின்சென்ட், சரவணன், சப்-இன்ஸ்பெக்டர்கள் ஹயாத்துல்லா, சுமன், மோகன்ராஜ், போலீசார் செந்தில்குமார், பார்த்தசாரதி, அன்பரசு ஆகியோர் கொண்ட தனிப்படை அமைக்கப்பட்டது.

சம்பவம் நடந்த வீட்டுக்கு அருகே உள்ள கண்காணிப்பு கேமராவில் பதிவான காட்சிகளை தனிப்படை போலீசார் ஆய்வு செய்தபோது அதில், கொள்ளையர்களின் உருவம் பதிவாகி இருந்தது. அந்த காட்சிகளை கொண்டு விசாரணை நடத்தியதில் கொள்ளையர்கள் மதுரையை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என்பது தெரிந்தது.

வேலைக்கார பெண் மீது சந்தேகம்

வேலைக்கார பெண் மகாராணியும் மதுரையை சேர்ந்தவர் என்பதால் போலீசாருக்கு அவர் மீது சந்தேகம் ஏற்பட்டது. சம்பவத்தின்போது யோகசேரன், அவருடைய மனைவியை கட்டிப்போட்ட கயிற்றின் மீதி பகுதி மகாராணி தங்கியிருந்த வீட்டின் கீழ்தளத்தில் கிடந்தது. அவரது செல்போனை ஆய்வு செய்ய போலீசார் கேட்டபோது, கொள்ளையர்கள் தனது செல்போனையும் பறித்துச் சென்றதாக மகாராணி கூறினார்.

அவரது செல்போனில் கடைசியாக பேசியவரின் எண்ணை மகாராணி வீட்டில் ஒரு நோட்டில் எழுதி வைத்திருந்தது தெரியவந்தது. அந்த செல்போன் எண்ணை வைத்திருப்பவர் தான் கொள்ளை நடந்தபோது அந்த பகுதிக்கு வந்துசென்றது தெரியவந்தது. எனவே போலீசார் மகாராணியை பல்லாவரம் போலீஸ் நிலையத்திற்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று தீவிர விசாரணை நடத்தினர்.

நாய்களை கொன்றார்

போலீசாரின் கேள்விகளுக்கு அவர் முன்னுக்குப்பின் முரணாக பதில் அளித்தார். போலீசாரின் கிடுக்கிப்பிடி விசாரணையில் மகாராணி உண்மையை ஒப்புக்கொண்டார். இதுகுறித்து போலீசார் கூறியதாவது:-

மதுரையில் இருந்து சென்னை வந்த மகாராணி தெரிந்தவர்கள் மூலமாக வங்கி அதிகாரி யோகசேரன் வீட்டில் வேலைக்கு சேர்ந்தார். அவர் வீட்டு வேலைகளை சரியாக செய்து, விசுவாசமானவர் போல காட்டிக்கொண்டார். தனக்கு சரியாக காது கேட்காது என கூறியும் வீட்டில் இருந்தவர்களின் அனுதாபத்தை பெற்றார்.

வீட்டில் நகை மற்றும் பணம் இருப்பதை தினமும் நோட்டமிட்ட மகாராணி அவற்றை கொள்ளையடிக்க சில நாட்களாக திட்டம் தீட்டினார். யோகசேரன் வீட்டில் 2 நாய்கள் வளர்த்து வந்தார். கடந்த மாதம் உணவில் விஷம் கலந்து ஒரு நாயை முதலில் கொன்றார். அடுத்த வாரத்தில் மற்றொரு நாயையும் அதேபோல் கொன்றார்.

திட்டம்போட்டார்

அதன்பின்னர் மகாராணி தனது உறவினரான நாகை மாவட்டத்தை சேர்ந்த அருண்குமார் (30) என்பவருடன் சேர்ந்து கொள்ளை திட்டத்தை வகுத்தார்.

இதற்கிடையில் வங்கி அதிகாரி யோகசேரனின் மகள் மதுரையில் திருமணத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டுவிட்டு சென்னை வந்து வங்கி லாக்கரில் தன்னுடைய நகையை வைப்பதற்காக தந்தை வீட்டிற்கு வந்தார். இதனை அறிந்த மகாராணி அந்த நகைகளை கொள்ளையடிக்க முடிவு செய்து அருண்குமாருக்கு தகவல் கொடுத்தார்.

அதன்படி அருண்குமார் தன்னுடைய நண்பர்களான மதுரையை சேர்ந்த செல்வம் (28), சுரேஷ் (26), கவுதம் (21) ஆகியோருடன் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை காலையில் சென்னைக்கு வந்தார். பல்லாவரம் வந்த 4 பேரும் யோகசேரன் வீட்டிற்கு சென்றனர். அவர்கள் 4 பேரையும், யாருக்கும் தெரியாமல் மகாராணி தனது கீழ்த்தள அறையில் தங்கவைத்தார்.

கொள்ளையடித்தனர்

யோகசேரனின் மகள் நகையை தந்தையிடம் கொடுத்துவிட்டு அண்ணாநகரில் உள்ள அவருடைய வீட்டிற்கு சென்றார். அப்போது யோகசேரனின் மகனும் வெளியில் சென்றுவிட்டார். இவைகளை கவனித்த மகாராணி, “இது தான் சரியான நேரம். நான் மேலே வேலை செய்ய செல்வதுபோல சென்று கதவை திறந்துவைக்கிறேன். நீங்கள் உள்ளே நுழைந்து என்னையும் சேர்த்து கட்டிப்போட்டு நகைகளை கொள்ளையடித்துவிட்டு செல்லுங்கள்” என கூறி வீட்டின் மாடிக்கு சென்றார்.

மகாராணி மாடிக்கு சென்று கதவை தாழ்ப்பாள் போடாமல் வீட்டு வேலை செய்வதுபோல உள்ளே சென்றார். கொள்ளையர்கள் மகாராணி அளித்த யோசனையின்படி நகைகளை கொள்ளையடித்துவிட்டு தப்பிச் சென்றுவிட்டனர்.

இவ்வாறு போலீசார் கூறினர்.

5 பேர் கைது

மகாராணியிடம் நடத்திய விசாரணையில் கொள்ளையர்கள் மதுரையில் பதுங்கி இருப்பதை போலீசார் அறிந்தனர். செல்போன் எண்களை கொண்டு அவர்களின் இருப்பிடத்தை போலீசார் கண்டுபிடித்து அங்கு விரைந்து சென்று கொள்ளையர்கள் அனைவரையும் சுற்றிவளைத்து பிடித்தனர்.

அவர்கள் கொள்ளையடித்த நகைகளை கோவையில் மறைத்து வைத்திருந்தது தெரியவந்தது. கொள்ளையர்களுடன் கோவை சென்ற போலீசார் மறைத்துவைத்திருந்த நகைகளை மீட்டனர். இதையடுத்து வேலைக்கார பெண் மகாராணி உள்பட 5 பேரையும் கைது செய்த போலீசார் அவர்களிடம் தொடர்ந்து விசாரணை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

குற்றவாளிகளை பிடித்த தனிப்படை போலீசாருக்கு சென்னை மாநகர போலீஸ் கமிஷனர் ஏ.கே.விஸ்வநாதன் பாராட்டு தெரிவித்தார். அவர்களுக்கு வெகுமதியும் வழங்கப்படவுள்ளது.
