Tech snag: Flight lands 10 mins after take-off

Chennai: Around 40 passengers of a Chennai-Vijayawada SpiceJet flight had a harrowing experience after the plane returned 10 minutes after take-off because of a technical snag on Saturday.

Flight SG3403, scheduled to depart at 12.40pm, took off after a delay of 10minutes. It, however, returned after flying for 10 to 20 minutes citing a technical snag. Sources said the pilot announced that there was some snag on the Bombardier plane.

The passengers had a tough time as the airline tried to rectify the snag and take off on the same aircraft. They were made to sit in the parked plane for around half-an-hour, then made to board a passenger shuttle bus which was driven to the terminal, but returned to the aircraft after a ride around the airport.

Passengers were made to sit inside the bus for half-an-hour again before re-boarding the place. A passenger said there was no clear communication from the crew or the pilot about the status of the flight for two hours. “We thought they moving us to the terminal when we were told to board the bus. The bus was driven around for a long time and we returned to the aircraft. Passengers including senior citizens and children were holed up in the bus till 3.35pm when we were asked to board again,” he added.

Tenkasi-based doctor ‘offers’ board to quack, in the dock

CHENNAI: Complaints against one doctor who helped a quack by offering him his name boards and prescription pad, and another who let a homeopath perform ultrasound scans, came up before the disciplinary committee of the state medical council earlier this week. 

“The committee has found both doctors guilty. We have also recommended action to be taken against the quacks by appropriate authorities,” Tamil Nadu State Medical Council president Dr K Senthil said. The council will initiate action against the doctors, which may include suspension of licences, he said.

Directorate of health service in Tenkasi filed complaints of misconduct against the two doctors.

In the first case, Tenkasi-based Dr Sivakumar was working in a clinic run by Anburaj, a quack. Health officials, who caught Anburaj prescribing medicines using Dr Sivakumar’s name, filed the complaint. During inquiry, Dr Sivakumar told the disciplinary committee that he worked at the quack’s clinic on Sundays. “He told us that he was not aware of the quack misusing his nameboard and pad,” Dr K Senthil said.

In the other case, radiologist Dr Kulandaivelu of Tenkasi, working with Suham Scan Centre, allowed homeopath Dr Thavamani to take ultrasound scans in his absence, in violation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994. The complaint from the local health officer Dr Elangovan said she signed scan reports in her name, although Dr Kulandaivelu sent monthly reports to the state health department covering for Dr Thavamani.

When joint director Dr Elangovan raided the centre and quizzed the doctor, he found several violations. Dr Kulandaivelu told the council that the homeopath was allowed to do scans in his centre once in a while as she had completed a course in sonography at the Bharathidasan University and was hence permitted to do ultrasound scans. “The disciplinary committee even checked with the university and found that the course was meant only to assist doctors and not to do the scans,” he said.

Deputy superintendent Thomas Alexander, who is deputed to the health department for checking violations of PCPNDT Act said sex-determination and sex-selective abortions led to dip in sex ratio at birth. “With our networks and intelligence, we keep a close watch on sex ratio at birth. If we see high rate abortions in second trimester, we look for violations,” he said.

In a third case, a man filed a complaint stating that abuse of analgesic by a quack led to the death of his wife. Madurai-based Duraipandi had given multiple analgesics injections and tablets to a patient who complained of fever and body ache in November, 2013. The next day, her health worsened and was referred to bigger centres, where she passed away. Inquiries later revealed that Duraipandi had quit formal education.

“A police complaint has been filed and the consumer court has awarded compensation. The complainant wanted our opinion on the matter to strengthen his case. We have said action should be initiated against the quack,” Dr Senthil said.

Air India to shut its booking office in Egmore to cut cost

CHENNAI: Air India is all set to close it’s iconic city booking office in Egmore as part of its move to cut down on its property in the city to cut cost and keep only a small unit at Airline House in Meenambakkam at airport. The booking office and staff will be shifted to airport in a couple of weeks. 

The airline continues to have an elaborate booking office system though ticket booking trend has long gone to online. The airline has put up it’s property in other location for sale or redevelopment.

Sources said the unit was getting only 100 bookings per day which was mostly from government staff for LTA and also for change of dates and other facilitations.

The airline was using the rented property for more than 60years but has decided to close and move to the airport office because of heavy losses. “The company was paying 35lakh to 40lakh or more to maintain the building. That is the reason why they have decided to move to airport,” he added.

Most of the airlines had shut their city offices because ticket booking has gone online.

The office was being kept open on holidays too. This Diwali, only two people came that too for tickets to Port Blair.

There is no move to cut staff but the move is to concentrate the staff in the airport. “Not many wil come to the airport to book tickets or change departure dates or to confirm seats by paying a fee,” he added.

Sources say the airline was looking at disposing off it's residential colony and also the airlines Unity complex where ground handling and flight catering offices are located in Meenambakam.

Experts predict low pressure in making, rain likely

CHENNAI: A day after cyclone Gaja wreaked havoc and moved to the Arabian Sea, weathermen have predicted that a low pressure area may form over Bay of Bengal by Sunday evening.
Weather experts said coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai may get rain around the middle of the week if the system forms and moves in the northwest direction. According to IMD officials, the low pressure area is likely to form over the central parts of the south Bay of Bengal by Sunday evening. The cyclonic circulation or swirling motion of winds, which lies over the south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood extending up to 3.1lkm above mean sea level, can influence the formation of the weather system.

Gaja may have skipped Chennai, but its impact was felt on Friday and Saturday with parts of the city and suburbs receiving sudden spells of rain.

“Parts of Chennai and suburbs saw pull effect rain from Gaja. The effect will be seen on Sunday too,” said Pradeep John, a private weather bolgger, in his weather post.

With a mere 2.1mm rain recorded until Saturday morning, Chennai stares at a 59% deficit rainfall. “By now, Chennai should have received around 500mm rain but we have received only around 20mm,” Balachandran said.

For the next 48 hours, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy with rain or thundershower likely to occur in some areas of the city. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 32°C and 25°C. For the state, light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur ayt many places on Sunday. IMD has issued an warning for heavy rain at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu on Monday and scattered heavy with isolated very heavy rain likely on November 20 and 21.

30 ஆண்டுகளாக விண்ணப்பத்தை பரிசீலிக்காத மத்திய அரசுக்கு, 10 ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் வழக்கு செலவு தொகையும், உயர் நீதிமன்றம் விதித்தது.உடனடியாக, வழக்கை பைசல் செய்யாததற்காக, உயர் நீதிமன்றம் வருத்தம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.
