Retd judge, wife and son booked in cheating case

The Madhavaram police have registered a cheating case against a retired judge, his wife and son for allegedly aiding a fraudster. The case has been booked based on a complaint by a person called Kumar, 50, of Moolakadai.

Kumar, a trader, had approached retired judge Rajagopal of Anna Nagar, seeking money to expand his business. He told Kumar he does not have enough money and introduced a person called Pandian, 47, of Periyakulam near Theni. Pandian told Kumar he had good contacts with senior officials in both public and private sector banks. He also claimed he can get him a huge sum of loan, for which he charged ₹35 lakh as commission.

Pandian, who took the cash in Madurai, however, evaded Kumar without getting him the loan. After several failed attempts to get the loan, Kumar lodged a police complaint against both Pandian and retired judge Rajagopal. He also approached the retired judge, who failed to help him.

Following this, police arrested Pandian. They have also booked a cheating case against retired judge Rajagopal, his wife Meena and son Arun Kumar for aiding the suspect and launched a hunt for the trio.

Gutka scam case: ED attaches 174 properties worth ₹246 crore

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Chennai, on Monday provisionally attached immovable and movable properties worth ₹246 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in connection with the gutka scam case.

The attached assets comprise 174 immoveable properties in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh, with a market value of ₹243.80 crore and moveable properties in the form of shares and vehicles valued at ₹2.29 crore.

The attachments were made after the ED Chennai zone-II, headed by joint director P Manikkavel, initiated investigations under the PMLA against unidentified officials of the state and the central governments, public servants and others based on an FIR filed by the CBI in the gutka scam.

The CBI registered the FIR on the directions of the Madras high court after it directed the probe agency to conduct investigations into all aspects of the offence of illegal manufacture, import, supply, distribution and sale of gutka and other chewable tobacco products which were banned in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with effect from May 2013. Investigations under the PMLA revealed that accused A V Madhava Rao, P V Srinivasa Rao, Tallam Uma Shankar Gupta and others were involved in the illegal manufacture, sale and distribution of gutka products. They had a turnover of ₹639.40 crore from June 2013 to June 2016. The ill-gotten money was invested in moveable and immoveable properties in Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.

Investigations further revealed that the accused made investments in land purchased in the name of Gayathri Realtors, Medha Dairy Private Limited, Vaijayanthi Spinners and others, sourced through cash from the sale proceeds of the illegal gutka business. Three factory premises were also acquired by the accused in the names of relatives /employees during the period to facilitate smooth running of the business.

Further, from the profits of the gutka business, personal investments were made by the accused in purchase of land in their and in the name of their relatives. Besides, shares were purchased in Goutham Buddha Textile Park, Guntur, and vehicles were bought from the sale and distribution of the gutka products. The accused made major investments in real estate in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, apart from investments in Salem, Puducherry and Chennai. These assets consist of the 174 properties that have been attached.

The second round of counselling for MBBS/ BDS admission in the state through single window counselling by the state selection committee will begin on Tuesday. The selection committee said there were 146 MBBS seats in government medical colleges, 48 in the three category B institutions run by the government and 69 seats in self-financing medical colleges.

Govt employees to get spl leave for cancer treatment: The state government has announced that government employees undergoing treatment for cancer will be awarded 10 days special casual leave for chemotherapy/radiotherapy. This special leave will be for 10 days from the day prior to the date of chemotherapy and will be in addition to the eligible leave, subject to the production of medical certificate from the hospital where they underwent the treatment. Minister D Jayakumar had made an announcement to this regard in the assembly on July 5.

Non-judicial members of state Lokayukta appointed: Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Monday issued appointment orders to two non-judicial members of Tamil Nadu Lokayukta — retired bureaucrat M Rajaram and K Arumugam. The orders were issued days after the Supreme Court stayed the Madras high court order that stalled the appointment on the grounds that the members were holding offices of profit. Rajaram was a former member of TN public service commission and Arumugam was prosecutor in session’s court and office-bearer of AIADMK’s advocates wing.

Fake internship: Univ wants criminal action against college, dentist

Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University has proposed criminal action against the management of Priyadarshini Dental College and one of its dental students Karishma Irfan for furnishing fake records to show that the student had completed her compulsory rotatory internship.

Irfan,whowas awardedthe degree, has registered with the dental council and is now allowed to practice dentistry. “We can declareher degree null and void, but we don’t want to do justthat.Thestudenthadearlier written to us complaining against the college for demanding money for her to apply for maternity leave. We also want to ensure the college has not faked internship log books of more students. This needs a detailed investigation,” a university official said.

The university will discuss further course of action against the college including police complaint with charges of forgery and cheating. It will discuss ways to prevent such incidents during general council meeting on Tuesday.University officials refused to speak on record but said another medical student from a self-financing college in Chennai who did not complete his internship had asked the university to consider his case and award degree. “We do not want to encourage this,” the official said.

Going by the recordsof Priyadarshini Dental College, the woman worked in the hospital on the day of her C-Section and monthsthatfollowedwithout a break. Irked by the serious lapse, the university asked the college to return her degrees in March. Last week, the college dean Dr M K Venkat Prasad wrote to the university saying that the student is not answering her phone.

In February, the university officials found Karishma Irfan’s application for “condonation of break” in compulsory rotatory internship due to maternity was pending. They also found that the college, which had applied for the condonation, declared her fit to receive BDS degreeeven beforeher leave petition could be approved. “At least 10 department heads sign the attendance and give remarks of performance. The records show that a day after her delivery,March 31,2017,shehas been transferred to the department of paedodontics. She worked there for a month in April 2017 and the department has marked her performance as ‘excellent’,” the official said pointing to the internship completion schedule.

ஊனமுற்றோருக்கான பெட்டிகளையும் தெற்கு ரயில்வே நிர்வாகம் நீக்கிவிட்டது. தற்போது 2 பொதுப்பெட்டிகள் மட்டுமே உள்ளன.
