கவிதா கடந்த 2 வருடமாக தனது வீட்டில் சீசர் என்ற நாயை வளர்த்து வந்தார். சில தினங்களுக்கு முன்பு பெய்த கனமழையால் சீசர் பயந்து வீட்டு வாசலில் பயங்கரமாக சத்தம் போட்டுள்ளது. இதனால் கடுப்பான கவிதாவின் பெற்றோர்கள் அக்கம் பக்கத்தினர் சீசர் இரவு நேரத்தில் தொந்தரவு செய்வதாக சத்தம் போடுகிறார்கள். இனிமேல் சீசர் வேண்டாம் எங்கயாவது கொண்டு போய் விடலாம் என்று கவிதாவிடம் கூறியுள்ளனர். இதற்கு மறுப்பு தெரிவித்த கவிதாவை லேசாக திட்டியுள்ளனர்.

இதனால் மனம் உடைந்த கவிதா வீட்டில் உள்ள ஒரு அறையில் தூக்கு போட்டு தற்கொலை செய்துள்ளார். தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்ளும் முன் கடிதம் எழுதி வைத்துள்ளார். அதில் அப்பா, அம்மா, பாட்டி மற்றும் தனது தம்பியிடம் சீசரை நன்றாக பார்த்துக்கொள்ளும் படி எழுதியுள்ளார். கவிதாவின் இந்த தற்கொலை பெரும் பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. அதுமட்டுமில்லை தற்கொலை செய்துக் கொள்வதால் என்னை மன்னித்து விடுங்கள் என்றும் கவிதா அந்த கடிதத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

தகவல் அறிந்து சம்பவ இடத்திற்கு விரைந்த காவல்துறையினர் கவிதாவின் உடலை மீட்டு கோவை அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் பிரேத பரிசோதனைக்காக அனுப்பி வைத்தனர். வளர்ப்பு நாயை பிரிய மனமில்லாமல் இளம்பெண் தற்கொலை செய்த சம்பவம் சமூகவலைத்தளங்களில் விவாத பொருளாகவும் மாறியுள்ளது. இந்த அதிர்ச்சியில் இருந்து கவிதாவின் பெற்றோர்கள் இப்போது வரை வெளிவரவில்லை.

நீட் ஆள்மாறாட்டம் தொடர்பான வழக்கு சென்னை உயர்நீதிமன்றத்தில் இன்று மீண்டும் விசாரணைக்கு வந்தது. அப்போது வழக்கை விசாரித்த நீதிபதிகள் கிருபாகரன், வேல்முருகன் ஆகியோர் நீட் தேர்வு தொடர்பான பல்வேறு கேள்விகளை முன்வைத்து அதற்கு விளக்கம் கேட்டுள்ளனர்.

‘நீட் தேர்வு கொணடு வந்தபிறகு பயிற்சி மையங்கள் மூலம் அதிக கட்டணம் வசூலிக்கப்படுகிறது. சுமார் 5 லட்சம் ரூபாய் வரை பணம் செலுத்தி பயிற்சி மையங்களில் படித்த மாணவர்களே அதிக மருத்துவ இடங்களை பெற்றுள்ளனர் என்பதை அறிவதில் வேதனையாக உள்ளது.

இது பணம் செலுத்தி படிக்க முடியாத ஏழை மாணவர்களை வேறுபடுத்தும் செயலாகும். பயிற்சி மையங்களால் ஏழை மாணவர்களுக்கு மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளின் கதவுகள் திறப்பதில்லை. எனவே, முந்தைய காங்கிரஸ்-திமுக அரசு கொண்டு வந்த நீட் தேர்வை ஏன் இந்த அரசு திரும்பப்பெறக்கூடாது?’ என நீதிபதிகள் கேள்வி எழுப்பினர்.

பிற மாநிலங்களில் நீட் ஆள்மாறாட்ட புகார் ஏதேனும் வந்துள்ளதா? என்பது குறித்து மத்திய அரசு பதில் அளிக்க வேண்டும். இதேபோல் நீட் முறைகேடு தொடர்பாக நேரடியாக புகார் வந்துள்ளதா? என்பது குறித்து சிபிஐ அமைப்பும் பதிலளிக்க வேண்டும் என நீதிபதிகள் உத்தரவிட்டு, வழக்கு விசாரணையை 7-ம் தேதிக்கு ஒத்திவைத்தனர்.

முறைகேடுகளைத் தடுக்க தோ்வு மையங்களில் ‘ஜாமா்’களை (செல்லிடப்பேசி சமிக்ஞைகளை முடக்கும் கருவி) நிறுவுவது கட்டாயமாக்கப்பட்டுள்ள நிலையில், இதுதொடா்பான அரசின் கொள்கை முடிவுகளை கண்டிப்பாகப் பின்பற்ற வேண்டும் என பல்கலைக்கழகங்களுக்கு, பல்கலைக்கழக மானியக்குழு (யுஜிசி) உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது.

ரேடியோ அதிா்வெண் அடிப்படையிலான சாதனங்கள் மூலம் தோ்வுகளில் முறைகேடு நடப்பதைத் தடுக்கும் வகையில், சோதனை முறையில் குறைந்த ஆற்றல் கொண்ட ‘ஜாமா்’களை தோ்வு மையங்களில் பொருத்த வேண்டும் என 2016-ஆம் ஆண்டில் அரசு கொள்கை முடிவெடுத்தது.

பல்கலைக்கழகம் மற்றும் கல்லூரிகளில் ஜாமா்கள் குறித்த அரசின் உத்தரவு பின்பற்றுவதை உறுதிப்படுத்த வேண்டும் என யுஜிசி சாா்பில் பல்கலைக்கழக துணைவேந்தா்களுக்கும், கல்லூரி தாளாளா்களுக்கும் ஏற்கெனவே எழுதிய கடிதத்தில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.

எலக்ட்ரானிக்ஸ் காா்ப்பரேஷன் ஆஃப் இந்தியா லிமிடெட் மற்றும் பாரத் எலெக்ட்ரானிக்ஸ் லிமிடெட் ஆகிய இரு அரசு நிறுவனங்கள், வாடகை அடிப்படையில், தோ்வு மையங்களுக்கு குறைந்த சக்தி கொண்ட ஜாமா்களை வழங்க அங்கீகாரம் அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அங்கீகரிக்கப்படாத உற்பத்தியாளா்களிடமிருந்து ஜாமா்களை பெறக் கூடாது என்று அந்தக் கடிதத்தில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Courier firm fined Rs 45,000 for not delivering Deepavali gifts

Chennai: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (South) slapped a fine of Rs 45,000 on an international express courier firm for not delivering Deepavali gifts, including sweets, snacks and sarees to a woman in Texas, USA. Her father from the city sent the gift prior to Deepavali three years ago.

In the petition, K. Sambandam of Adyar submitted that he sent a parcel containing silk saree, blouses, tops, petticoat, sweet and snacks to his daughter, who was living in an apartment at Houston, Texas, U.S.A, as Deepawali gift. He purchased a silk saree for a price of Rs 11,850.

He sent the parcel through M/s. Queens International Express, Mylapore for Rs 4,500 on October 24, 2016. However, the courier company had not delivered the consignment. The purpose of sending the articles to celebrate Deepvali was totally defeated, which caused great mental agony and hardship, he said.

Even after repeated requests there was no proper response from Queens International Express. In its reply, the company, in an email, admitted that the shipment was wrongly delivered and they were taking steps to retrieve it and deliver it to his daughter. But so far, neither the consignment was delivered to either to the consignee nor returned to the consignor.

He issued notice on November 9, 2016. As there was no response, he filed the complaint seeking direction to K.M. Gani Proprietor of M/s. Queens International Express to pay him compensation for causing mental agony.

In his reply, K.M. Gani denied the averments made in the petition. The consignment was duly shipped to Houston Texas and it was wrongly delivered because of the address mentioned in proforma invoice. It was handed over to the transporter M/s. FedEx Express, Egmore. He sought dismissal of the petition.

The bench comprising its president M. Mony and member R. Baskarkumaravel said M/s. Queens International Express committed deficiency in service.

Considering the facts and circumstances of the case, the Forum ordered M/s. Queens International Express to pay the petitioner Rs 25,000 towards the cost of consignment and a compensation of Rs 10,000 for causing mental agony and a cost of Rs 10,000.

In a first, Pudukkottai dentist collects 64,800 human teeth

A Dubai-based dentist couple had created another world record by collecting 25,000 teeth in the year 2016.

Pudukkottai: A Pudukkottai-based dentist Dr Rajesh Kannan has created a new record in India books of records, Asia book of records and also hopes to enter the Guinness book of records in collecting the largest number of 64,800 extracted human teeth, beating two previous records recently.

According to Dr Rajesh Kannan, the previous record in this category of having collected 11,500 teeth by an Indian dentist Dr Jibreel of Madurai Meenakshi Mission Hospital, had made it to both India book of records and Asian book of records in 2011. A Dubai-based dentist couple had created another world record by collecting 25,000 teeth in the year 2016. But this one exceeds both those records.

He said he had collected these teeth over 15 years of his clinical practice as well as organised more than 120 dental camps and also with the help of his fellow dentists who have been collecting teeth for the last ten years for achieving his record.

The object of his record was to create awareness among the general public about oral hygiene and the importance of teeth for their overall health, Dr Rajesh Kannan told DC.

He said he got the spot approval and certificate from Asia book of records judge Dr Harisha for both Asia book of Records and India book of records.

He has also applied to Guinness book of world records with all documentary evidence and will get his certificate from them shortly, he added.

Dr Rajesh said on February 2 this year he also created the World's largest tooth model measuring 35-ft and broke the previous record set by Sensodyne, New Zealand, which created 32-ft tooth model. A juries' panel from Guinness book of world records, London, came to Pudukkottai and after their spot verification, they handed over the certificate for that feat to him, he added.

Chennai: Renowned playback Singer SP Balasubrahmanyam is very upset with the treatment meted out to him at a Prime Minister’s meeting that he attended. SPB took to Facebook to claim that he was bewildered at a double standard in treatment and the partiality shown towards certain stars from Bollywood.

CHENNAI: Every morning D Arul Raj wakes up with one goal — to rescue at least one homeless person and put a roof over his/her head. He drives his autorickshaw, picking up savaaris for four hours each in the morning and evening, and the rest of the day he goes around the city to look out for homeless people who need help. Arul founded the Karunai Ullangal Trust two years ago to help abandoned people. So far, he has rescued more than 320 people.

On Tuesday, when we were waiting to talk to Arul, he gets a call telling there is someone in Perambur who needs his help. The 34-year-old autorickshaw driver doesn’t think twice before getting into his vehicle, asking us to hop on and zooming past the city.

How it all began

“I have a wife and two children. Till 2015, I had no intention of doing social service. During the floods that year, my wife received an emergency call from one of her friends at Saidapet. He told her that they were starving and were unable to get out of the locality due to stagnation. I brought food to their place only to realise there were hundreds who needed help,” he says.

Using a pushcart, Arul ferried people out of the area. That’s when he first felt the need to help a fellow human being. “It was the amount of trust they had on me that shook me. I then joined a Facebook page and a WhatsApp group called Makkal Ku Udhavalam, created especially to help people during floods. Requests for help kept pouring in and I did what I could,” he says.

Arul was then working in the collection department of a private bank. He would go from house to house to collect bank dues. However, when the office management realised he was busy with social service for the most part of the day, they fired him in 2016. Arul was jobless for six months. “We worked for six months after the floods on cleaning and providing relief materials. After six months, when the admin of Makkal Ku Udhavalam decided to delete the page, I decided to manage it and changed the name to Karunai Ullangal. Simultaneously, that was when I lost my job,” he says.

Goal-oriented

From helping cancer patients to poor children getting scholarships, Arul did everything he could. One day, towards the end of 2016, a woman on the roadside in Saidapet asked him if he could help her join a shelter home.

“I did not even know what a shelter home was until then. Earlier too, during floods, a woman had asked me the same, but I could not help her. But this request made me take the step to rescue the homeless and this changed my life forever,” says Arul. In January 2017, he received a call saying an injured homeless man was lying by the roadside and that he might die if they don’t help him soon. “This time, I took help from different NGOs and enrolled him in a private shelter home at Porur at 1.30 am. When that sense of satisfaction kicked in, I decided this is what Karunai Ullangal Trust will do from then on — rescue homeless and enrol them in a home.”

Daily routine

For each rescue, the fuel costs alone comes up to Rs 500. When Arul did not have a job, his friends and volunteers stepped up. “Each month, we were doing about 10 rescues and I did not want to depend on them forever. So, I bought an autorickshaw in 2017. A dear friend of mine gave me Rs 90,000 and the rest of the amount, I am paying through installments every month,” says Arul.

From then till now, Arul’s daily schedule has been the same. Ride the autorickshaw from 6 am to 10 am, carry out rescues from 10 am to 6 pm and again ride the autorickshaw from 6 pm to 10 pm before he heads home to spend time with his family. Of the people they have rescued, 120 have been reunited with their family, while others are in different shelter homes across the city. Now, Arul funds most of the rescues himself.

Alarming stories

While carrying out the rescues, Arul says he found some incidents alarming. “One day in 2018, I saw a distressed man on the roadside in Tambaram with a shabby long beard, torn clothes and his face covered in a thick layer of dirt. Talking to him, I found out that he was a film director who took to the roads after his wife divorced him and kids did not support him,” says Arul.

It is often common issues that lead to situations like this, he says. “Next time you find a distressed person, talk to them. Most of them have homes, but they don’t go because there are no loving people inside that house,” says Arul, as he swipes through the pictures of rescued people on his phone. Learning first-aid Pointing to a huge first aid box attached to his seat, Arul says that he is also trained in first-aid. Often, when they head out for a rescue, the notice that the victim’s legs and hands are infested by maggots due to living in unhygienic conditions and with diabetes. The 34-year-old learned first-aid, so he could clean their wounds before taking them to shelter homes.

As he shares his story, we reach the place of rescue. Outside Perambur loco station, we see an old man lying in his own feces, and his feet were half eaten by worms and maggots. Arul gets down and quickly takes the mask, gloves and other necessary equipment out of the first-aid box and runs to the man. He talks softly to him, consoles him as he cleans the wounds. Within an hour, he convinces him to go to a home, and four hours later, he was admitted. Arul looks at us and says, “This is the best part of my day.”

‘App’solutely helpful

Arul also introduced the Karunai Ullangal Trust mobile application on Google PlayStore in September. The app lets the public upload pictures of the abandoned people and assigns volunteers for the rescue.
