Tirupur collector lauds Hyd police for ‘encounter’, sparks debate on social media

A comment of Tirupur collector K Vijayakarthikeyan on Twitter, supporting Hyderabad police's ‘encounter’ of four accused in a rapeand-murder case sparked a debate on social media on Friday.

Vijayakarthikeyan had congratulated the Hyderabad police on Twitter soon after the ‘encounter’ took place. Later, when some people pointed out that the so-called ‘encounter’ can turn out to be extra-judicial killing, he defended the Hyderabad police saying the four accused had attempted to snatch the weapons from the police and run away, and so they were gunned down.

Reacting to the news of the encounter, Vijakarthikeyan tweeted, “Kudos Kudos #HyderabadPolice! @hydcitypolice #ChummaKizhi #JusticeFor-Disha”.

Reacting to it, a tweeter user named Naveen Kumar replied, “Sir Extrajudicial encounter killings and mob lynching are the same .Do you supporting these encounters?” To this, the collector replied, ‘Personally I’m ok with this for this case. Anyways they ‘tried to escape’ and police were forced to open fire”.

Soon, others joined the debate. Another user, identifying as Maverick Manoj, replied, “Sir whatever it is. you shouldn’t not encourage these kind of things. Public and we can praise this incident. But you’re in a position that should not pass comments like this.” One more user pointed out that the accused were yet to be found guilty by the court of law.

Vijayakarthikeyan, however, said that he was entitled to his personal opinion like any other Indian citizen and added that the four tried to snatch the weapons of the police and run away. “We should let them shoot the police and escape? And post #RIPPolice and sad smileys ?’’ he asked.

MADURAI: The 52 guest lecturers working at the Madurai Kamaraj University College were in for a rude shock after the college management informed them that they would not be receiving their November month's salary.

One of them said, "The college principal told me that guest lecturers would not be paid for the months of May and November. Interestingly, guest lecturers working in MKU Constituent Colleges have received November month's salary; so did those appointed last academic year and before," he said.

Replying to the allegation, Principal of MKU College N George said that, as per a notification issued by the MKU, guest lecturers' appointment was only for the odd semester of academic year 2019-2020, and that they would not receive salaries for the months of November and May.

"This was clearly mentioned in the notification," he said.

However, there was no such information in the guest faculty walk-in-interview advertisement issued by the MKU in June this year.

The guest lecturer told TNIE that they were deputed to invigilation duty in November as it was the semester examination month. The college paid them Rs 100 per examination whereas other universities like Bharthidasan University and MS University paid Rs 150 as remuneration to their guest lecturers.

"This denial of salary has pushed us into a corner. We don't know how we will survive this month. Rent, children's school fees, day-to-day expenses, all have to be met with the Rs 15,000 that we draw every month," he lamented and requested MKU Vice-Chancellor to look into the issue.

Earlier this year, the MKU recruited guest lecturers, who qualified either the National Eligibility Test (NET), the State Eligibility Test (SET) or held a PhD in the respective subjects, for its constituent colleges in Sattur, Thirumangalam, Vedasandur, Aruppukottai, and for MKU College. They receive a consolidated salary of Rs 15,000 a month.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said innovative research, backed by technology and policy decisions, is essential for the progress of the country.

Speaking at the sixth convocation of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) deemed-to-be-university here, Gadkari said the country needs to lay greater focus on research and steps should be taken to strengthen the knowledge base.

“Proper attitude, confidence and transparency can promote innovative research for developing new technologies which will ensure speedy and balanced development, he said.

The Union minister said the agricultural sector also has an immense potential to generate employment and contribute to the growth of the economy.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Ganeshi Lal said besides technology and innovation, once should take a peep into theology.

Union Petroleum and Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said there is no dearth of resources in Odisha but universities should generate ideas to ignite a spark for taking the state along the path of development.
