GRH tests access card system for entering labour theatres

Madurai: The Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) sources, on Monday in Madurai, said that to prevent the entry of unauthorized people, only an access card can now open the grill gates leading to the section of corridor outside the two labour theatres at the comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care (CEmONC) building in the hospital. The access card system has been implemented on a trial basis, said hospital sources.

The system has come into place after over two months since the incident when a woman PG doctor was assaulted by a patient’s kin in the same area on December 14. After the attack, GRH doctors and staff had protested demanding for better protection and safety. “The access card system is on trial for a week first. The mechanism for it has been set up. Depending on the feedback, any flaws may be rectified and then it may be implemented full time,” said a hospital source.

According to hospital sources, the GRH dean Dr Sangumani J has distributed access cards to select doctors, medical professionals, staff nurse and PG doctors. The card can be swiped on the machines installed just outside the grill gates leading to the labour theatres to open them. “Without the card, the gates cannot even be opened. Only the security can now allow attenders. They have been instructed to allow attenders inside only in case of emergency. Even the needs of patients like food, water, towels or napkins will be taken in only by the security staff from the attenders to the patients,” said a security staff.

While GRH staff has welcomed the move, there is also concern regarding the practical difficulties of implementation. “Many times previously as well, there has been much resistance and difficulties when we try to restrict the number of attenders and their access. A lot depends on the security staff, who need to be vigilant,” said sources.

CHENNAI: An institution refusing to return original documents to its staff or students would now be counted as a human rights violator. The NHRC has recently included refusal to return of original documents as a sub-category of violation in its online complaint portal.

The issue caught public’s eyes after T Vasanthavannan, a former assistant professor, killed himself because of alleged harassment from the management of a private engineering college in the city, in 2018. The college had refused to return his certificates, even after he sough resignation.

K Vishwambaran, a first year mechanical engineering student in Chennai said, “I had decided to quit after the first month because I wanted join an arts college. However, the management said that I had to pay the fees for all the four years, or they wouldn’t let me go. They refused to return my certificates. Now maybe, I can try and raise a complaint.” The move has been equally welcomed by the faculty members. “Some colleges forcibly retain it. The certificates are our private property. The inclusion of this sub-category will help us claim our rights,” KM Karthik of All India Private College Employees Union, said.

U.S. President Donald Trump, on his maiden two-day visit to India on Monday, heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “true friend”, and said his rise from a humble background as a tea-seller to India’s Prime Minister “underscores India’s limitless promise”.

The President also described Mr. Modi as a “tremendously successful leader”.

Mr. Trump’s lavish praise, while addressing a mammoth crowd at the Motera stadium in Gujarat, reflected the bonhomie shared by the two leaders.

“Prime Minister Modi, you are not just the pride of Gujarat. You are living proof that with hard work and devotion Indians can accomplish anything, anything at all, anything they want,” Mr. Trump said, amid loud cheers from the audience at the mega ‘Namaste Trump’ event.

In his long speech, sprinkled with praise for not only Mr. Modi but also for India’s democracy, pluralism and diversity, Mr. Trump highlighted the country’s achievements and what its democracy offers to citizens.

“The story of the Indian nation is a tale of astounding progress, a miracle of democracy, extraordinary diversity and above all, you noble people. India gives hope to all of humanity. In just 70 years, India has become an economic giant, one of the largest democracies ever to exist and one of the most amazing nations anywhere in the world,” President Trump said.

NEET impersonation scam: One more med student arrested

Another first year student has been arrested and removed from SRM Medical University after the CB-CID found his fingerprints did not match with that of the person who wrote Neet 2019 from a centre in north India.

Police said the Krishnagiri-based student, whose name has been withheld following orders of the Madras high court, wrote the entrance exam from a centre in Tamil Nadu. He had appointed an impersonator to write the same exam in his name from another state. When police detected a fingerprint mismatch, they asked the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exam, for a clearer copy of his fingerprint. The agency took fingerprints of the student twice in the examination hall. “We wanted to be sure before we accuse the student of impersonation. The copy from the agency came about a fortnight ago. When we were sure of the mismatch, we apprehended him and informed SRM,” said a senior police officer investigating the case. The student was later sent to jail.

“We have removed him from the rolls temporarily. A letter has been sent to the MCI. We are awaiting further information from police,” said a senior administrator of the college.

So far, the CBCID has arrested at least 17 people including students, parents and agents in connection with the impersonation scam in 2019 medical admissions. The modus operandi was similar in almost all cases. Students and their parents paid up to ₹20 lakh to impersonators to write the exam in their name from another centre. They used the impersonator’s score to get admission in government and private medical colleges through the centralised or state counselling.

Weeks after the crime was busted, the state government took fingerprints of all first year students from government, self-financing colleges and deemed universities. The authorities also sent the same to CB-CID to conduct the required forensic tests along with a copy of the fingerprints taken by the NTA. The CB-CID also obtained a list of TN students whose names and details matched with those who wrote the same exam at another centre.

Tamil Nadu adds 161 postgraduate medical seats

Tamil Nadu has added 161 more postgraduate seats in government medical colleges for admission that is likely to begin in March 2020. This will take the number of PG medical seats in the state to 1,919, director of medical education Dr R Narayana Babu said.

Last year, the state added 508 postgraduate seats and admitted 1,758 students. It has 2,900 undergraduate medical seats. While a major share of the 40% increase in 2019 came through conversion of PG diploma seats — barring three in diabetology — into PG degree programmes, the state increased the number of seats for orthopaedic, general surgery, radiology and anaesthesia this year.

“Equipping trauma care centres set up by the Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Initiative is one of our top priorities,” Dr Babu said.

For 2021, the state has applied for 100 seats in emergency medicine, besides 288 in other specialities. This year, the state, which has 334 super-speciality seats, will add 25 more.

State health minister C Vijaya Baskar said the increase in PG seats will directly benefit healthcare services in the state. Last year the number of obstetricians-gynaecologists passing out of government colleges every year will go up from 109 to 203, and the number of anaesthesiologists will go up from 126 to 193. There will also 29 more general surgeons and 18 more general medicine practitioners from the state colleges.

With MCI now mandating that every medical college to start PG courses, more colleges in the state will start applying, officials said. The Postgraduate Medical Education (Amendment) Regulations, 2018 says medical colleges have to apply for permission to start postgraduate medical education courses within three years of grant of recognition or three years from the date of inclusion of the MBBS qualification. In 2021, Omandurar Medical College, Government Sivaganga Medical College and Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College will apply at least 50 seats each. “Appplications for colleges in Karur, Pudukottai and ESI-Coimbatore are in the pipeline,” a senior official said.

This year, the state will surrender nearly 1,000 seats to the Directorate General of Health Services for admission under the all-India quota.

The first round of admission for MD and MS courses in medicine will be completed by March 29 and the second round will end on April 12. The seats that remain vacant after two rounds of counselling will be returned to the state selection committee on April 22.

2019ம் ஆண்டின் இறுதியில் ஸ்விக்கியில் உணவு டெலிவரி செய்யும் பணியில் இணைந்தார் சுதா. கொச்சியைச் சேர்ந்த இவர், இந்தியாவில் ஸ்விக்கியில் அதிக ஆர்டர்களை டெலிவரி செய்த பெண் ஊழியர் என்ற பெருமையை பெற்றுள்ளார்.

'கடந்த பருவமழை சமயத்தில் கொட்டும் மழையில் நான் ஒரு ஆர்டரை வழங்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. வாடிக்கையாளரின் இருப்பிடத்தை அடைந்த நான், முற்றிலும் நனைந்து நடுங்கினேன். நான் வாசலில் நனைந்து கொண்டிருந்ததைப் பார்த்து வீட்டில் இருந்து வந்த பெண் ஒருவர் என்னிடம் ஒரு டவலை கொடுத்ததுடன், சூடாக டீ வேண்டுமா என்று கேட்டார். அன்றைய நாள் எனக்கு மிகவும் திருப்திகரமாக, மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தது.
