In a city like Bengaluru, where bargaining with auto drivers is part of everyday life, one local resident came up with a clever way to make the process easier– by using artificial intelligence. What started out as a simple tech experiment has now gone viral, not because it was high-tech or complex, but because it was so relatable and practical. At a time when most people talk about AI in terms of big things like automation and future tech, this short video brought it right down to street level– literally!

Using AI to do the talking

In the video, Sajan Mahto, who identifies himself as a student, showcases how ChatGPT’s voice assistant feature can be used in a typical situation many face– negotiating an auto fare in a language they may not speak well.

He types into ChatGPT: “Hi ChatGPT, can you have to help me negotiate with the auto driver in Bengaluru. The auto driver is saying that the fare is Rs 200, and I am a student. Please negotiate it for Rs 100.”

ChatGPT responds instantly in Kannada: “Anna, this is the route that I travel every day, and I am a student. Please come for Rs 100.”

From Rs 200 to Rs 120

The AI’s response leads to a brief conversation between the two. Eventually, the auto driver agrees to reduce the fare: “I had said Rs 200, and it came down to Rs 150. Since you requested, I reduced another Rs 30 and settled at Rs 120. It's not possible for me to go lower.” Mahto accepts the final offer, and the deal is done, with ChatGPT helping to bridge the gap.

A clarification: It was a staged demonstration

To avoid any confusion or misinterpretation, Mahto clearly mentioned in his caption that the interaction was not real, and the purpose of the video was to demonstrate a creative use of AI. He stated: “This is an attempt to educate on how one can use CHATGPT in day-to-day life. To harm any sentiments regarding any emotions is not intended. The sole purpose is education only. This is an act performed, not a real autowala.”

Social media applauds the idea

The video quickly gained traction online, with viewers praising the smart yet simple application of technology. The comments section was flooded with excitement and admiration. One user enthusiastically wrote, “Tagda AI technique mere sher,” while another commented, “I will use this with shopkeepers and local vendors,” reflecting how relatable and practical the solution felt. Some appreciated the thoughtful use of AI, saying, “Real use of AI, I appreciate your behaviour,” while others expressed amusement and relief, with one remarking, “Problem solve hogya.”

The video was shared by Sajan Mahto, who recorded his interaction with the AI tool. In the clip, Mahto asked ChatGPT, "Hi ChatGPT, can you have to help me negotiate with the auto driver in Bengaluru. The auto driver is saying that the fare is Rs 200, and I am a student. Please negotiate it for Rs 100."

In his video, the move paid off. After a brief conversation, the fake auto driver, who had initially demanded Rs 200, agreed to settle at Rs 120. "I had said Rs 200, and it came down to Rs 150. The University Grants Commission has allowed higher educational institutions to admit students twice a year, a move teachers fear would disrupt academic activities.

This month, the higher education regulator notified the UGC (Minimum Standards of Instructions for Grant of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degree) Regulations, which provide for biannual admission. “HEIs (higher educational institutions) prepared to handle biannual admissions may admit students twice a year, in July/August and January/February,” said the regulations.

A UGC official said that the National Education Policy provides flexibility for students to pursue higher studies. The international system, particularly in the US, is biannual admission.

The Indian National Teachers’ Congress (Intec) and Academics for Action and Development have opposed the move. Intec chairman Pankaj Garg, a faculty member in Rajdhani College under Delhi University, said: “No serious study or consultation with universities and colleges has preceded this drastic proposal. It may seem an appealing idea on paper that biannual admissions will bring flexibility, but in reality they will seriously destabilise the academic framework of higher education institutions.”

The regulations said a student can pursue two UG programmes simultaneously and two PG courses at the same time, with flexibility in terms of change of discipline, institution and mode of learning.

ஆய்வறிக்கையை அருமையாகத் தயாரித்திருந்த அந்த ஆய்வகம் சம்பந்தப்பட்டவரின் பாலினத்தைக் குறிப்பிடும்போது “பெண்” என்பதற்கு பதிலாக “ஆண்” என்று குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தது. எப்படிப்பட்ட அலட்சியமான செயல்பாடு இது? இப்படிப்பட்ட ஆய்வறிக்கையைச் சமா்ப்பித்தால் அந்த விசா விண்ணப்பத்தை யாா்தான் ஏற்றுக் கொள்வாா்கள்?

ஒருமுறை மட்டுமே ரத்தப் பரிசோதனை செய்யும் “ரேண்டம் குளுகோஸ்” பரிசோதனைக்காக இரத்த மாதிரியை எடுத்துக்கொண்ட ஆய்வகம் ஒன்று “ஏசி, பிசி” (உணவுக்கு முன்பு, உணவுக்குப் பின்பு) என்று இரண்டுவிதமான ஆய்வு முடிவுகளைக் கொடுத்து அசத்தியதும் உண்டு.

இன்றைய தேதியில், ஆய்வகங்கள் இல்லாத நிலைமை சாத்தியமில்லை. ஆய்வகங்கள் வழங்கும் அறிக்கையின் அடிப்படையிலேயே நோயாளிகளுக்கு மருந்து வழங்குவதும், அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்வதும் தீா்மானிக்கப்படுகின்றன. அறிக்கையில் இடம் பெற்ற எந்த ஒரு சிறிய தவறும் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட நோயாளியின் எதிா்காலத்தையே பாதிக்கக்கூடியதாகும்.

தற்காலத்தில் பெரும் தொகையைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு மருத்துவப் பரிசோதனைகளை மேற்கொள்ளும் ஆய்வகங்கள், இனியேனும் தாங்கள் வழங்கும் அறிக்கைகளைத் தயாரிப்பதில் அலட்சியம் காட்டாமல் சரியான தகவல்களைக் குறிப்பிடவேண்டும். இதுவே அப்பாவிப் பொதுமக்களின் வேண்டுகோளாகும்!

CHENNAI: Giving effect to the announcement made by Chief Minister M K Stalin a few days ago, Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiyan on Monday introduced a bill to establish the Kalaignar University in Kumbakonam by bifurcating the Bharathidasan University in Tiruchy, which covers eight districts. Significantly, chief minister will be the chancellor of the new university.

So far, the Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University is the sole exception where the CM holds the position of chancellor.

“The chief minister of the state of Tamil Nadu shall be the chancellor of the Kalaignar University. He shall, by virtue of his office, be the head of the university and shall, when present, preside at any convocation of the university and confer degrees, titles, diplomas or other academic distinctions upon persons entitled to receive them,” the bill tabled in the Assembly said.

The higher education minister shall be the pro-chancellor of this university and in the absence of the chancellor or during the chancellor’s inability to act, the pro-chancellor shall exercise all the powers and perform all duties of the chancellor. The Bharathidasan University covers a large area comprising eight districts – Ariyalur, Karur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruchy and Tiruvarur.

“To fulfil the ever-growing demands of higher education from diverse sections of the society and also to fulfil the aspirations of the youth, especially in the delta region, from disadvantaged background to enter higher education institutions and also to increase the gross enrolment ratio in the said region, the establishment of Kalaignar University is essentially required,” the bill explained.

The proposed Kalaignar University would provide world-class facilities and disseminate knowledge for the upliftment of the marginalised living in the districts of Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Thiruvarur, the bill stated, pointing out that after the establishment of the Kalaignar University in Kumbakonam, the Bharathidasan University will cover the area comprising districts of Tiruchy, Karur, Perambalur and Pudukkottai.

The headquarters of the Kalaignar University will be located within the limits of Kumbakonam city municipal corporation or in any place within a radius of 25 km around those limits, the bill stated.

V Pari, regional secretary of the TNGCTA and senate member of Bharathidasan University, said the university currently oversees two regional joint directorates of collegiate education- one in Tiruchy and another in Thanjavur.

“With the bifurcation, the Thanjavur directorate will now come under Kalaignar University, which will simplify and streamline the administrative processes,” he added.

Make CM chancellor of all state varsities: Teachers’ association

CHENNAI: The Association of University Teachers (AUT) on Monday urged the state government to bring further amendments to the State Universities Act to make chief minister the chancellor of state universities. In a memorandum to the higher education minister, the association said the recent amendments to the Acts governing 10 state universities, facilitating the appointment of vice-chancellors by the state government, were appreciable.

However, further changes were necessary to remove the governor’s role as chancellor in 19 of the 21 universities. The AUT said the move will ensure autonomy of universities and strengthen the federal structure of governance. “If the governor continues to have powers to interfere in the affairs of state universities, it will affect their functioning. The state government should bring further amendments to take complete control of the universities,” said AUT president MS Bala Murugan.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Monday observed how the marks of the meritorious candidates were fabricated in the “cash for jobs” scam was a well-executed master plan, enabling scientific corruption.

The marks of the meritorious candidates were fabricated in the “cash for jobs” scam, for appointment as junior engineers and assistant engineers for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) when V Senthil Balaji was the minister for Transport in 2015.

The observation was made by a division bench of justices R Subramanian and G Arul Murugan while hearing the writ appeals filed by A Nambi Venkatesh and others, whose marks were allegedly “lowered” so as to favour less meritorious candidates to be appointed, challenging the order of a single judge.

They filed a writ petition in 2021 seeking to quash the selection orders issued for appointing 33 junior engineers (JE) and 63 assistant engineers (AEs) in 2015 following a notification issued on November 2, 2014, by the MTC during the tenure of Senthil Balaji.

The single judge (Justice Vivek Kumar Singh), in his order dated December 13, 2024, refused to quash the selection order and, instead, directed the MTC authorities to make a “fresh consideration” of the grievances of the petitioners. Challenging this order, they filed the appeals.

Advocate N Subramaniyan, appearing for the appellants, submitted that 33 JEs were appointed against the actual notification of 13, while 63 AEs were appointed against the notified figures of 40 in violation of the norms.

He told the bench the marks of the successful candidates were fabricated by lowering the marks they scored through weightage marks including the academic marks and the interview, thereby, they were denied their rightful job.

Referring to the fabrication of the marks while making entry in the personnel register from the interview register, the bench said, “It is a well-executed master plan enabling scientific corruption.”

It termed the way the high score of the meritorious candidates was lowered and low scorers were awarded high marks as a “mathematical gimmick”.

Comparing the scam in West Bengal in the sensational case of appointment of teachers, the bench commented that the “entire selection was rigged” there, but here, the process was fair but “final selection was wrongly arrived at”.

Pointing to the adherence to reservation norms in the appointments, the bench said there was a “breach of communal roster” as scheduled castes were selected for 3 posts instead of 6 as per the reservation.

The bench also came down heavily against the MTC officials and the law officers connected to the case for trying to delay the court proceedings.

“We are seeing an attempt is made to either delay the proceedings or to hijack this case from this bench,” it said.

Pointing to the arguments of a counsel appearing for one of the respondents, the bench said, “You cannot delay the inevitable.”

Following the completion of arguments, the bench reserved the orders.
