Karnataka on Monday banned entry of people from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, which have seen a spike in Covid-19 cases in the recent weeks, into the state till May 31.
Chief minister BS Yediyurappa said they will review the decision depending on the situation prevailing at that time and after considering requests from those states. However, Karnataka will allow people from other states, including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with whom the state shares its border, in a staggered manner.
The restriction will not apply to people who have already registered their names on Seva Sindhu portal and secured passes for travel between states. As many as 49,935 people from Maharashtra, 17,756 from Tamil Nadu and 2,563 people from Gujarat have registered their names to come to Karnataka as on Monday. “We will allow people from any state if they have obtained a travel pass,” medical education minister K Sudhakar added.
The decision to impose travel restrictions follows the recent arrival of a large number of people from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Scores of those returning from the affected western states tested positive in quarantine, leading to a spike in the number of infections in the state.
Institutional isolation to stay: Government
Some 60% to 70% positive cases reported in Karnataka in the past week have had travel history to these states,” Sudhakar said.
Home minister Basavaraj Bommai said the government was on high alert about travellers from these states because of an alarming rise in the number of cases in Karnataka.
Meanwhile, despite a huge controversy over institutional quarantine for people coming in to Karnataka from other states and countries, the government on Monday said it stood by its decision. People coming from other states are demanding that they be allowed to be in home quarantine if they test negative on arrival.
