CHENNAI: As a teacher, how much would you give your students? Your time, your love, chocolates? All of the above? The principal of George Venugopal Middle School in Mudaiyur, a village twenty kilometers from Chengalpet, gave his students a van he purchased with his own money.

The Maruti Omni van picks up students from the nearby villages — Narapakkam, Kattur, Thathalur every morning and drops them home in the evening. Each village gets an exclusive trip and 41 students benefit from the newly introduced service.

Teachers in the school have followed the principal’s lead and pitch in for petrol costs. They have even taken driving classes to fill in for the driver in case he takes leave. However, Karunamurthy, the principal has taken the additional burden of paying the van driver himself.

When Karunamurthy became principal of the government-aided school in 2007, it had 780 students. Ten years later, there are barely 50 students. Students have left the 65-year-old Tamil medium school for other government/private English medium schools in their neighborhood.

“Students who study here now are from the poorest families in the village. Their parents can’t afford transport for their children,” said Karunamurthy. “If you bring a horse to water, it may not drink but if you bring a student to school, he will study.”

The van, the newest addition to the school, has become a matter of pride for students. Shyam, a student of Class VIII is the self-proclaimed cleaner who helps other students with their bags stowed on the roof.

“I don’t have to walk 6 kilometers every day,” declares the lean 12-year-old with curious eyes. Teachers of the school agree that the free transport service is just a temporary solution to keep the prestigious school afloat.

“We have to upgrade according to the times. English medium education has become the norm over the years. We want to begin teaching in English soon,” said Illango, a senior teacher.

This government-aided school, like many others in the State, has been stopped from upgrading to English medium. However, a petition filed by Pasupathy School in Pandanallur, Thanjavur district, which has been facing the same problem, was taken up by the Madras High Court on June 27. He has asked the government to respond to this and 19 other queries pertaining to the state of education in Tamil Nadu.

In the meantime, the teachers of this little school, tucked away in Mudaiyur, are breathing life into it by giving their students free rides.

Roads in and around Anna Nagar have gone back to the two-way traffic system, but many residents are unhappy.They say that the two-way roads increase traffic congestion and are a nightmare for pedestrians.

CHENNAI: With the Metrorail construction in Anna Nagar winding up after several years, the roads have finally gone back to a two-way traffic system. But, many residents feel the one-way system, which was in place temporarily, was much better. Ever since the police made the roads in and around the Anna Nagar roundabout two-way, commuters say traffic snarls and chaos have become a daily affair.

“The wider streets (when it was one-way) made driving easy. Even during peak hours of the day, the roads were pretty free. But after it was made two-way again, everyone is ganging up to one side of the road, causing unrest, sometimes also leading to arguments and fights. And pedestrians are finding it quite difficult to cross the roads,” says D Sagana, a resident of Anna Nagar.

Many commuters also say they are unclear about the traffic pattern as there are no proper stop signs or traffic signals to guide them. Even a few months after the streets on second and fourth avenues were made two-way, the commuters say there is an absence of traffic regulations. This makes people jump signals and drive fast.

“After the two-way system was introduced, the traffic flow has become worse and it takes too much time to cross this section. As the Metrorail has come up now, people from Thirumangalam also take the second avenue (the arterial road) to reach the Metro station. This too is causing traffic jams. So if it’s one-way again, it will save a lot of time for people like me who cross this section every day for work,” says R Nanditha.

“The two- way arrangement is not sudden. We had given a proper intimation to the public through the media. However, if the public demands, we can change the rules. The government has made proper arrangements in place to put up stop signs and draw stop sign on roads; it will be done within a week. Installing traffic signals will also be done within a month’s time,” says S Anandaraju, a sub-inspector manning the traffic in the area.

While the commuters generally dislike the two-way system, many shopkeepers, auto drivers and vendors are happy with it since it makes customers reach the shop easy. Apparently, many jewellery shops in the locality have started seeing business only after the new regulation.

“Two-way roads are much better than one-way. Earlier, it was extremely difficult for us to get passengers and we lost a lot of fuel going around, but now it is easy. If proper rules are in places, people will surely follow it,” says A Pandi, an auto driver.

 எனவே, மருத்துவ படிப்புக்கான கலந்தாய்வை ஆகஸ்டு மாதம் 28–ந்தேதிக்கு உள்ளாகவும், பல் மருத்துவத்துக்கான கலந்தாய்வை செப்டம்பர் மாதம் 10–ந்தேதிக்கு உள்ளாகவும் நடத்தி முடிக்கும் வகையில் அனுமதிக்கவேண்டும் என்று கேட்டுக் கொள்ளப்பட்டு இருந்தது.இதை சுப்ரீம்கோர்ட்டு ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு இந்திய மருத்துவகவுன்சில் தெரிவித்த கால அவகாசத்துக்குள் கலந்தாய்வைநீட்டித்து நடத்தி கொள்வதற்கு அனுமதி அளித்து உத்தரவிட்டது.

Power supply hit in Tiruvarur district

Sporadic and moderate rain lashed several parts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts on Wednesday and on Tuesday night.

Dark clouds hung over many towns in the delta region throughout the day.
During the rain that drenched Tiruvarur on Tuesday night, a transformer burst at the Pavithramanikkam sub-station leading to disruption of power supply in several parts of Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Karaikal areas. Rains also impacted power supply in many areas of Tiruvarur, Tiruthuraipoondi, Nidamangalam, Mannargudi, Koradachery, Nannilam, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Voimedu localities.

The chief amounts of rainfall (in mm) recorded in major centres in the three districts during the 24 hours ending 8-30 a.m. on Wednesday are as follows: Papanasam 42, Neivasal Thenpathi 31.2, Manjalaru 24, Orathanad 23.4, Kumbakonam 20, Tiruvidaimardur 19, Ayyampettai 18, Lower Anicut and Vettikkadu 11.4 each; Nidamangalam 48, Kodavasal 39.2, Valangaiman 30, Mannargudi 22, Tiruvarur 21.6, Nannilam 16.4 and Pandavaiyaru Head 12.6; Anaikaranchatram 35, Manalmedu 32.4, Mayiladuthurai 20, Tirupoondi 18.4, Sirkali 16 and Nagapattinam 15.6.

 MBBS admission: PIL seeks fee fixation for deemed varsities

 ‘Profit-making hospital not taken into account while calculating fee’

The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the State government on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition seeking to fix the tuition fee for various medical courses offered by deemed universities in the State.

The First Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar admitted the petition filed by Jawaharlal Shanmugam. The petitioner prayed the court to pass an interim order restraining the authorities from conducting any procedures for admission to such courses offered by the deemed universities till final disposal of the PIL.

The petitioner submitted that tuition fee fixed by the deemed universities is not correlated to the actual income/earning of the medical college and its teaching hospital. “The huge profit making teaching hospital is not taken into account while calculating the fee. Only the expenses incurred by the university and the hospital are considered. Giving posh and sophisticated atmosphere inside the campus cannot be the criteria to fix exorbitant fee,” he added.

Claiming that fee fixed by the deemed universities which are above Rs. 10 lakh on an average, is beyond the reach of any common meritorious student, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the Chairman of the Committee for Fee Fixation, Department of Health & Family Welfare to immediately fix the tuition fee for medical courses in deemed universities.

Admitting the plea, the Bench impleaded all the deemed universities in the State as a party respondent to the PIL and ordered notice returnable by July 17.





After Etihad, Emirates & Turkish off laptop ban list

Dubai's Emirates and Is tanbul-based Turkish Airlines on Wednesday said the US has lifted the ban on laptops from their nonstops to America with immediate effect. This comes three days after the US revoked a similar restriction on Abu Dhabi's Etihad.

 

America had on March 25 banned electronic devices larger than a mobile phone in passenger cabins of direct flights to the country from 10 airports in the Gulf, North Africa and Turkey , including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar and Turkish. These devices have to be checked in on these airlines' nonstop flights to the US.But for some airlines, things are going back to normal now. “Effective immediately , electronics ban has been the electronics ban has been lifted for Emirates' flights from Dubai International Airport to the USA. Emirates has been working hard in coordination with various aviation stakeholders and the local authorities to implement heightened security measures and protocols that meet the requirements of the US department of homeland security's new security guidelines,“ an Emirates spokesperson said.

Turkish Airlines said in a tweet: “Dear passengers, welcome on board our US-bound flight. Please fasten your seat belts and enjoy your own electronic devices.“

While Turkish's India operations are only a daily on Delhi-Istanbul and MumbaiIstanbul routes, Emirates is the largest foreign airline in terms of flying people in and out of India. The three Gulf carriers -Emirates, Etihad and Qatar -flew over a crore passengers in and out of India last year with anywhere from 67% to 80% of these flyers taking connecting flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha to fly between India and rest of the world. The US is one of the main destinations for transit travellers to and from India.





8-foot-long python rescued from plane

An 8-footlong Indian rock python turned up in the undercarriage bay of an Indian Air Force transport plane at Agra airbase on Tuesday.With the reptile trapped in the undercarriage bay of an AN-32 transport plane, a rescue team took nearly five hours to take the snake out of the narrow space in the aircraft. The reptile is currently under observation and will be released into the wild when found fit, officials said.

 

The python was found trapped in the undercarriage bay of the right wing of the aircraft (no. K2706).Concerned about the wellbeing of the snake, IAF officials contacted the wildlife department.
A rescue team comprising two expert snake rescuers from Wildlife SOS, an NGO that works on rescuing animals, later arrived at the airbase. It took nearly five hours for the team to carefully extricate the distressed python after ensuring that it remained calm and unhurt.

A member of Wildlife SOS rescue team said, “It was a challenging rescue operation for us as we had to get the python out of the narrow space while keeping in mind its safety. We patiently waited for the snake to loosen its grip so that we could carefully transfer it to a transport carrier.“

Gargi Malik, PRO (defence), Lucknow, told TOI, “An AN-32 aircraft was parked at the Agra air force station and it was raining.The python entered the undercarriage of the aircraft.The IAF officials informed the forest department, who arranged for the python to be taken away after it was given sedatives.“
Baiju Raj M V, director (conservation projects) for Wildlife SOS said, “Rescues like these require skill and patience. Our professionally trained rescuers have to be extremely careful to avoid any casualty. We thank the IAF for considering the well-being of the python and reporting the incident to us,“ said Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS.





Karnan committed gravest contempt of court: SC

Terming former Calcutta high court judge C S Karnan's wild and obnoxious allegations against serving and retired judges of the Supreme Court and high courts “grossest and gravest“ contempt, the Supreme Court has justified its decision to send him behind bars for six months.

In a unanimous verdict, a sevenjudge bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar said it was required to punish the former judge for his “unsavoury actions and behaviour“ as his conduct had made the judiciary a laughing stock not only in India but also across the world and justice Karnan failed to substantiate his baseless allegations against members of the judiciary.

“We have no hesi tation in concluding, that the actions of Justice C S Karnan constituted the grossest and gravest actions of contempt of court ... He is therefore liable to be punished for his unsavoury actions and behaviour. We are satisfied that he should be punished for his actions with imprisonment for six months,“ said the bench, also comprising justices Dipak Misra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lo kur, P C Ghose and Kurian Joseph.

The court noted that Justice Karnan refused to mend his way despite the apex court initiating suo motu contempt proceedings against him and he continued to “foul mouth his colleagues“ in the judiciary. “His demeanour was found to have become further aggressive, after the court passed orders from time to time, in this case.“

“The contents of the letters addressed by him contained scandalous material against judges of high courts and the Supreme Court. This correspondence was addressed to the highest constitutional authorities, in all three wings of governance ­the legislature, the executive and the judiciary ,“ the bench said in its verdict dated May 9. The judgement was uploaded on the SC website on Wednesday.
“The local media, unmindful of the damage it was causing to the judicial institution, merrily rode the Karnan wave. Even the foreign media, had its dig at the Indian judiciary .None of his actions can be considered as bona fide, especially in view of the express directions issued by this court requiring him to refrain from discharging any judicial or administrative work,“ it said.

Charging deemed universities with concealment and falsification of financials, a PIL in Madras high court has sought fixing of a fee structure for medical courses offered by deemed universities in Tamil Nadu.

 

It wanted the court to pass an order of interim injunction restraining the government and fee fixation committee, from conducting any procedure for admission for undergraduate, post-graduate, diploma courses and super-specialty medical courses, besides dental courses, offered by deemed universities in Tamil Nadu.

Though no injunction was granted, the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, before which a PIL from Jawaharlal Shanmugam came up for admission on Wed nesday , impleaded all the 10 deemed universities in the state as respondents, and issued notices to them for filing their responses by July 17.

The PIL said deemed universities offering medical courses were operating with the sole intention of amassing wealth through unfair means, and added that profiteering had become their sole objective.
He said that for the purpose of calculating tuition fee, the entire income of the medical college and its teaching hospital should be taken into consideration. Mere expenses alone should not be taken into account, he said, adding that income tax department was aware of the `concealment and falsification of financials' of deemed universities, and the fact that what the deemed universities had revealed would not be the true picture.

Jawaharlal Shanmugam further said though a few private medical colleges offered high quality education at an affordable cost, largely it had become a tool to establish a big empire and expand into diverse business activities, keeping the deemed university as the driving force.
“The exorbitant tuition fees charged per annum goes against the very principle and objective of running a charitable educational institution,“ he said.

Giving comparative data on marks and fee structure for various deemed universities, he said exorbitant tuition fees running to several lakhs of rupees were charged by private medical colleges and deemed universities, and that they were beyond the reach of any common meritorious candidate.
The real merit-based admission even through NEET would have no meaning if the fee structure is not regulated, he said, adding: “The very objective of NEET-based merit admission is itself getting defeated in the context. Deemed universities are all managed by highly influential people with enormous political clout,“ he said.

இந்திய மருத்துவக் கவுன்சில் விதிமுறைகள்படி, மருத்துவக் கல்லுாரிகளில் பொது கலந்தாய்வு மூலம் மாணவர் சேர்க்கை நடத்த வேண்டும். தமிழ்நாடு டாக்டர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்., மருத்துவப் பல்கலையின் கீழ் அரசு, தனியார், நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலைகள் உள்ளன. இவற்றில், விதிகள்படி அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீடு அடிப்படையில் 15 சதவீத இடங்கள் நிரப்பப்படும். மாநில அரசு நிறுவிய மருத்துவக் கல்லுாரிகள், சிறுபான்மை மருத்துவக் கல்லுாரிகள், நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலைகளில், பொது கலந்தாய்வு அடிப்படையில் 85 சதவீத இடங்களை நிரப்ப மாநில அரசு நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும். மாநில மருத்துவக் கல்வி இயக்குனரக தேர்வுக்குழு கையேட்டில், நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலை கல்லுாரிகளில் உள்ள மருத்துவ படிப்பு விபரங்களை குறிப்பிடவில்லை.சுகாதாரத்துறை செயலர், 'நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலை படிப்பிற்கான இடங்கள் பொது கலந்தாய்வில் வராது,' எனக் கூறியுள்ளார். பொது கலந்தாய்விலிருந்து, நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலைகளை விலக்கி வைக்கும் நோக்கில் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். அவ்வாறு செய்தால், 85 சதவீத இடங்களை அவர்களே பூர்த்தி செய்வதுபோல் ஆகிவிடும்.
புதுச்சேரி உட்பட அண்டை மாநிலங்களின் நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலைகளில், பொது கலந்தாய்வு அடிப்படையில் மாணவர் சேர்க்கை நடக்கிறது. தமிழகத்தில் நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலைகளில் நேரடி மாணவர் சேர்க்கைக்கு மத்திய, மாநில அரசுகள் அனுமதிக்கக்கூடாது. மருத்துவப் படிப்பு மாணவர் சேர்க்கைக்கான பொது கலந்தாய்வு பட்டியலில், நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவப் பல்கலைகளை சேர்க்க வேண்டும்.

சென்னை: தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவ பல்கலைகளில் மருத்துவ படிப்புக்கான கல்வி கட்டணத்தை நிர்ணயிக்க கோரி, சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் மனு தாக்கல் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. மனுவுக்கு பதிலளிக்கும்படி 10 நிகர்நிலை பல்கலைகள் மற்றும் தமிழக அரசு பல்கலை மானிய குழுவான யு.ஜி.சி.,க்கு 'நோட்டீஸ்' அனுப்ப உத்தரவிடப் பட்டுள்ளது.

சென்னை திருவான்மியூரை சேர்ந்த ஜவகர்லால் சண்முகம் என்பவர் தாக்கல் செய்த மனு:

தனியார் மருத்துவ கல்லுாரிகளில் மருத்துவப் படிப்புக்கான கல்விக் கட்டணத்தை அரசு அமைத்துள்ள குழு நிர்ணயித்துள்ளது. நிகர்நிலை பல்கலைகளைப் பொறுத்தவரை, அரசு நியமித்த கட்டண நிர்ணயக் குழு எந்த கட்டணத்தையும் நிர்ணயிக்கவில்லை. அதனால், நிகர்நிலை பல்கலைகள் தங்கள் விருப்பம் போல் கட்டணங்களை நிர்ணயித்து கொள்கின்றன. அரசு மருத்துவ கல்லுாரிகளில் எம்.பி.பி.எஸ்., படிப்புக்கு 13 ஆயிரத்து 600 ரூபாய், தனியார் மருத்துவ கல்லுாரிகளில், அரசு ஒதுக்கீட்டு இடங்களில் 2.5 லட்சம் முதல் மூன்று லட்சம் ரூபாய், நிர்வாக ஒதுக்கீட்டு இடங்களுக்கு 10 முதல் 21 லட்சம் ரூபாய் வரை என நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தமிழகத்தில் நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவ பல்கலைகளை அரசியல் பின்னணி, செல்வாக்கு உடையவர்கள் நடத்துகின்றனர். லாப நோக்கில் தான் மருத்துவ கல்லுாரிகள் நடத்தப்படுகின்றன. வர்த்தக நோக்கில் அதிக கட்டணத்தை நிகர்நிலை பல்கலைகள் வசூலிப்பதால் தமிழக அரசுக்கு இரண்டு மனுக்களை அனுப்பினேன்; எந்த நடவடிக்கையும் இல்லை. எனவே நிகர்நிலை பல்கலைகளின் நிதிநிலை அறிக்கையை கருத்தில் கொண்டு, மருத்துவ படிப்புகளுக்கான கல்வி கட்டணத்தை நிர்ணயிக்கும்படி தமிழக அரசுக்கு உத்தரவிட வேண்டும். அதுவரை நிகர்நிலை மருத்துவ பல்கலைகளில் மாணவர்கள் சேர்க்கைக்கு தடை விதிக்க வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு மனுவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. மனு தலைமை நீதிபதி இந்திரா பானர்ஜி, நீதிபதி எம்.சுந்தர் அடங்கிய, 'முதல் பெஞ்ச்' முன் விசாரணைக்கு வந்தது. மனுதாரர் சார்பில் வழக்கறிஞர் எம்.வேல்முருகன் ஆஜரானார். தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள 10 நிகர்நிலை பல்கலைகளையும் வழக்கில் சேர்த்து முதல் பெஞ்ச் உத்தரவிட்டது. மனுவுக்கு பதிலளிக்கும்படி நிகர்நிலை பல்கலைகளுக்கும், தமிழக அரசு, மருத்துவ கவுன்சில், யு.ஜி.சி.,க்கும், நோட்டீஸ் அனுப்ப உத்தரவிட்டு விசாரணையை 17க்கு தள்ளிவைத்தது.

மருத்துவ மற்றும் பல் மருத்துவ படிப்புகளில் சேருவதற்காக நாடு முழுவதும் நடத்தப்பட்ட ‘நீட்’ தேர்வு முடிவை வெளியிட சென்னை ஐகோர்ட்டின் மதுரை அமர்வு இடைக்கால தடை விதித்தது. பின்னர் இந்த தடையை கடந்த மாதம் 12–ந்தேதி சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டு நீக்கியது. இதையடுத்து நீட் தேர்வு முடிவுகள் கடந்த 23–ந்தேதி வெளியிடப்பட்டது.

நீட் தேர்வு வெளியிட தடை விதிக்கப்பட்டதன் காரணமாக அதில் வெற்றி பெற்றவர்கள் மருத்துவ படிப்புகளில் சேருவதற்கான கலந்தாய்வு தாமதம் ஆனது. இதையடுத்து, இந்திய மருத்துவ கவுன்சில் சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டில் ஒரு மனுவை தாக்கல் செய்தது. அதில், ஏற்கனவே சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டு கூறிய கால அவகாசத்துக்குள் கலந்தாய்வை நடத்தி முடிக்க இயலவில்லை. எனவே, மருத்துவ படிப்புக்கான கலந்தாய்வை ஆகஸ்டு மாதம் 28–ந்தேதிக்கு உள்ளாகவும், பல் மருத்துவத்துக்கான கலந்தாய்வை செப்டம்பர் மாதம் 10–ந்தேதிக்கு உள்ளாகவும் நடத்தி முடிக்கும் வகையில் அனுமதிக்கவேண்டும் என்று கேட்டுக் கொள்ளப்பட்டு இருந்தது.

இதை சுப்ரீம்கோர்ட்டு ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு இந்திய மருத்துவ கவுன்சில் தெரிவித்த கால அவகாசத்துக்குள் கலந்தாய்வை நீட்டித்து நடத்தி கொள்வதற்கு அனுமதி அளித்து உத்தரவிட்டது.

அரசு மருத்துவம் மற்றும் பல் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளில் அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீடு கலந்தாய்வுக்கு இணையதளத்தில் பதிவு தொடக்கம்

அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீட்டு எம்பிபிஎஸ், பிடிஎஸ் இடங்களுக்கான கலந்தாய்வில் பங்கேற்க இணையதளத்தில் பதிவு செய்வது தொடங்கியது. நீட் தேர்வில் தகுதி பெற்றவர்கள் இதற்கு விண்ணப்பிக்கலாம்.

நாடு முழுவதும் அரசு மருத்துவம் மற்றும் பல் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளில் இருந்து 15 சதவீதம் எம்பிபிஎஸ், பிடிஎஸ் இடங்கள் அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீட்டுக்கு ஒதுக்கப்படுகின்றன. தமிழகத்தில் மட்டும் சிதம்பரம் ராஜா முத்தையா மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி உட்பட 23 அரசு மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளில் இருந்து 456 எம்பிபிஎஸ் இடங்கள் மற்றும் சிதம்பரம் ராஜா முத்தையா பல் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரி, சென்னையில் உள்ள தமிழ்நாடு அரசு பல் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரியில் இருந்து 30 பிடிஎஸ் இடங்கள் அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீட்டுக்கு ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீட்டு இடங்களுக்கான கலந்தாய்வு தேசிய தகுதி மற்றும் நுழைவுத் தேர்வில் (NEET - நீட்) தகுதிப் பெற்றவர்களைக் கொண்டு இந்த இடங்கள் நிரப்பப்பட உள்ளன.

அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீட்டுக்கான முதற்கட்ட கலந்தாய்வு ஜூலை 13, 14 ஆகிய தேதிகளில் நடைபெறுகிறது. அதற்கான முடிவுகள் ஜூலை 15 - ம் தேதி வெளியிடப்படுகிறது. முதற்கட்ட கலந்தாய்வில் இடம் கிடைத்தவர்கள் ஜூலை 16-ம் தேதி முதல் 22-ம் தேதிக்குள் தாங்கள் தேர்வு செய்த கல்லூரிகளில் சேர வேண்டும். இரண்டாம் கட்ட கலந்தாய்வு ஆகஸ்ட் 5-ம் தேதி முதல் 7-ம் தேதி வரை நடைபெறு கிறது. இதற்கான முடிவுகள் ஆகஸ்ட் 8 -ம் தேதி வெளியிடப் படுகிறது. இரண்டாம் கட்ட கலந் தாய்வில் இடம் கிடைத்தவர்கள் ஆகஸ்ட் 9-ம் தேதி முதல் 16-ம் தேதிக்குள் தாங்கள் தேர்வு செய்த கல்லூரிகளில் சேர வேண்டும். அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீட்டில் நிரப்பப்படாமல் மீதமுள்ள இடங்கள் ஆகஸ்ட் 16 -ஆம் தேதி மாலை 5 மணிக்கு பிறகு, அந்தந்த மாநில அரசுகளின் ஒதுக்கீட்டுக்கு ஒப்படைக்கப்படும்.

அகில இந்திய ஒதுக்கீட்டு இடங்களுக்கான கலந்தாய்வில் பங்கேற்க www.mcc.nic.in என்ற இணையதளத்தில் பதிவு செய்வது நேற்று பகல் 12 மணிக்கு தொடங்கியது. வரும் 11-ம் தேதி மாலை 5 மணி வரை பதிவு செய்யலாம்.

புது தில்லி: இந்தியாவின் புகழ்பெற்ற திறந்தநிலை பல்கலைக்கழகமாக விளங்கும் இக்னோவில், திருநங்கைகளுக்கு அனைத்துப் படிப்புகளையும் இலவசமாகப் பயிலும் வாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந்த வாய்ப்பின் மூலமாக ஏராளமான திருநங்கைகள் பட்டப்படிப்பு பயில முன்வருவார்கள் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுவதாகக் கூறிய துணை வேந்தர் ரவீந்திர குமார், ஏற்கனவே 100க்கும் மேற்பட்ட திருநங்கைகளிடம் இருந்து விண்ணப்பங்கள் வந்துள்ளதாகவும் தெரிவித்தார்.

சென்னை: ரஜினி மகள் சவுந்தர்யாவுக்கும் அவரது கணவர் அஸ்வினுக்கும் சென்னை குடும்பநல நீதிமன்றம் இன்று பரஸ்பர விவகாரத்து வழங்கி உத்தரவிட்டது.

2010-ல் தொழிலதிபர் அஷ்வினைத் திருமணம் செய்தார் ரஜினியின் இளைய மகள் செளந்தர்யா. இந்தத் தம்பதியருக்கு வேத் என்கிற மகன் உண்டு.

Higher salary for finance graduates

Although the placement season is over and the new academic year is set to begin, several companies have made special requests to degree colleges. They’re looking for B.Com, M.Com, MCA and MBA graduates after the recent shift to the GST regime.

Savita Rani, placement officer at M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, said six to seven companies have approached the college over the past week requesting for students who have a background in taxation and finance. “A majority of our students are already placed. Companies want candidates who would help make the transition to this new platform,” she said.

S.C. Sharma, adviser to Jain University, said that over the last week, the college has received calls from about half a dozen companies asking for job aspirants who are B.Com graduates and good in accountancy.

“They want graduates who will help them with accounting as well as analysis of the company’s finances,” he said. What’s more, they’re offering a hike of 25% in salary than what was offered during placement season.

Allow deposit of old notes, Supreme Court tells Centre

 “It is harsh if you close all options for genuine persons”

Cautioning the government against depriving genuine persons of their hard-earned money and property, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said the Centre cannot close all options for such persons.
It should open a window for them to approach the authorities to prove that it is their money, the court said.

“It is harsh if you close all options for genuine persons who were unable to deposit their [demonetised] notes within the stipulated period,” a Bench of Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar and D.Y. Chandrachud told the government, represented by Solicitor-General Ranjit Kumar. “If I am terminally ill and could not deposit my money, I should be given an opportunity now to approach you and establish my facts and prove that it is my money... You can’t just deprive me of my money because I am terminally ill,” Justice Khehar said, addressing Mr. Kumar.

“You are taking away my money because I am terminally ill? Citizens are facing problems and you are there to solve them. If not, serious problems will arise,” Chief Justice Khehar orally observed.

Affidavit filed

Mr. Kumar said the government had already filed an affidavit explaining why the period to deposit demonetised notes was restricted.

The Centre restricted the grace period till March 31, 2017 only to Indian citizens who were abroad during the period between November 9 and December 30, 2016.

`All MBBS students should take Hepatitis B vaccine'

All students selected to first-year MBBS BDS courses in Tamil Nadu should have taken the hepatitis B vaccination, the directorate of medical education has deemed.

 

Hepatitis B, given by doctors or nurses through intramuscular route, is a vaccine recombinant used to prevent infection by the hepatitis B virus. It helps the body produce its own protection (antibodies) against the disease.“It is extremely important for medicos to be vaccinated against hepatitis. If they are selected and do not have vaccination certificate, we plan to give them vaccines before they are enrolled. Immunisation will protect them against the disease,“ said director of medical education Dr A Edwin Joe.

It is a serious liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). For some people, the infection becomes chronic, meaning it lasts more than six months. Having chronic hepatitis B increases your risk of developing liver failure, liver cancer or cirrhosis -a condition that causes permanent scarring of the liver.

Unani doctors demand better recognition

Demanding that the state plug the vacuum between education and employment opportunities in Unani medicine, nearly 150 Unani practitioners gathered at the Government Unani Medical College at Arumbakkam on Monday to stage a protest.

 

The protest was initiated by the Southern Unani Medical Association, which laid out various demands, the most pivotal of which was giving better recognition to the practice. They alleged that unlike college graduates of other natural medicine courses like Siddha, students of Unani did not have the option of pursuing a master's degree in any government institution in Tamil Nadu.

“It has been 40 years since the Unani course was established here. But till date, there is no PG degree or sufficient avenues for employment in government medical establishments. We are seeing a lot of developments in our field lately, and the demand has increased among the middle class and upper middle class demography who are trying natural medicine options.But if it has to reach all strata of society , the government should ensure that Unani practitioners are hired in government establishments as well,“ said D Shahjahan, general secretary of the association, adding that every Taluk hospital in the state should hire Unani practitioners. They also demanded that for representation to the state government, an officer in the capacity of a joint director should be appointed.
The protesters, who were all alumni of the Government Unani college in the city, sent a draft of their demands to health secretary J Radhakrishnan, health minister C Vijayabaskar and chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

`Postpone medical counselling till Prez decision on state bill'

The State Platform for Common School System in Tamil Nadu (SPCSS) on Monday demanded the postponement of the Tamil Nadu medical counselling until there is clarity over the President's response to the bills passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly, and the reservation policy to be adopted in the all India medical counselling. The medical counselling in TN has been slated for July 17.

 

The state legislative assembly had passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to MBBS and BDS Courses Act 2017 and the Tamil Nadu Admission to Postgraduate Courses in Medicine and Dentistry Act 2017 unanimously and they were sent for presidential assent in February this year. The SPCSS along with TN Students-Parents Welfare Association and Health Development Association, Chennai, held a press meet at the ICSA Centre, Egmore, to voice their demands.

“We don't want the government to proceed with the counselling until we receive a reply from the President ­ whether the bills receive the nod or are rejected is up to the President, but we need an answer before going ahead with the counselling,“ said Prince Gajendra Babu, secretary of the SPCSS.

Another issue raised was the ambiguity over the reservation policy under the all-India quota counselling. Instead of the term `open competition', the term `unreserved category' has been used. Anybody can be allotted seats under open competition regardless of category and based purely on merit. After filling the open competition seats, the reserved category seats are filled, explained members. However, when the term `unreserved category' is used, it is associated with the idea that only those outside the reserved categories may participate.

Students seeking MBBSBDS admissions in Tamil Nadu this academic year cannot sign over a passportsize photograph with an application. A photograph of the candidate holding a placard containing hisher name and the date it was taken should be affixed to it, the selection committee in-charge of single counseling has declared.

 

The prospectus issued by the directorate of medical education in all government medical colleges and on http:www.tnhealth.org says two identical passport size photos with light background (no Polaroids) taken after April 1, 2017, should be pasted on the OMR sheet and application.

“Photographs must be taken with a placard indicating the name of the candidate (as in the application) and date of taking the photograph. In case the name and date are written on the photo graph after taking it, the application will be rejected... If the photograph is not a recent one taken at the time of submitting the application, the application will be rejected,“ it says. The photograph on the application should be attested by a gazetted officer headmasterheadmistress with a clear stamp.
Directorate of medical education officials said they were forced to make such a requirement mandatory after officials involved in single window counselling complained that many students looked different in the photographs submitted. “Many submitted pictures that are up to three or four years old.As they grow, students tend to look different. Officials are forced to look for other documents to get the photo validated. We have also asked for an attestation this time,“ said director of medical education Dr A Edwin Joe.

While most students complain they felt humiliated and felt like criminals, parents said they had a tough time as applications were out of stock for more than four days. “We were then told we can take a printout of the forms. We thought we had everything ready until we read the prospectus online. In one of the annexures, they mentioned instructions for a photograph.We are rushing now,“ said R Satyanarayana, parent of an MBBS aspirant. The last date for submitting applications is on or before July 8.

University sets `safety deadline' for women

The vice-chancellor (VC) of a Central University in Lucknow issued an order on Monday , asking the women staff on campus not to work out of their offices beyond 6 pm. R C Sobti, the VC of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) said the order (a copy of which is with TOI) was to ensure the safety of women, including administration staff and faculty members. It further stated that women will have to seek prior permission from the VC if they want to stay in their offices beyond the stipulated time.

According to university spokesperson Govind Pandey , the move is aimed at protecting women from increasing harassment cases.“In recent times, there have been a number of incidents in which women are at the receiving end and it is to avoid any untoward incidents that the vice-chancellor has asked women employees not to stay in office beyond 6pm,“ Pandey said. The diktat's term has been criticised by the university's women employees, who claimed it was an attempt to restrict their freedom.

Some staff members criticised the move as it would hinder them in discharging their duties. “The university has two doctors, one male and one female, who on rotation basis do the night shift after 8pm. The order means woman officer will not report to work because she has a night shift every alternate day and won't that hamper healthcare services,“ said an employee.

Medical education quite affordable in Karnataka

For a domiciled student in Karnataka, studying in a private medical or dental college may not be such a costly affair compared to Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or Kerala. A look at the fee structures in medical institutions across these states reveals that Karnataka has some of the most affordable fee structures.

 

The state follows a unique three-stage categorization for medical and dental admissions. While 40% of seats in private medical colleges are reserved for Karnataka students domiciled in the state for seven years or more under the state government quota, another 40% of seats are reserved for students from across India under what is known as all-India or non-Karnataka quota. The remaining 20% seats are for NRI students and institutional preferences.

The Karnataka government also favours domiciled students and charges them `77,000 as annual fee for MBBS and `49,000 for Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). In comparison, a government quota seat for students of and outside Maharashtra in Mumbai's KJ Somaiya Medical College costs a whopping `9.25 lakh per annum. The fee is decided by the Shikshan Shulka Samiti, based on expenses incurred by colleges which submit their yearly ac counts to the panel. In Tamil Nadu gov ernment quota seats can go up to`4 lakh for MBBS and`2.5 lakh for BDS. In Kera la, on the other hand, an all-India merit seat costs `5.5 lakh and for BDS, one pays `2.5 lakh. In Telangana, however, a government quota seat fee is lesser than that in Karnataka. A student can get a seat under the government quota on merit at `60,000. The state also follows a revision of fee every three years and the fee structure is fixed by the Telangana State Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee constituted by the state government.

You can't turn genuine money into trash: SC





The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought to prevail on the Centre to open a fresh window for exchange of scrapped `500 and `1,000 notes for persons who missed the December 30 deadline if they could establish that the money was theirs and they had a genuine reason for not changing it. The court was a step away from ensuring an exchange opportunity when the Centre sought two weeks to respond to the suggestion. The court's previous inquiries had so far failed to move the Centre.

The government, through solicitor general Ranjit Kumar, relied on data about misuse of exchange of old currency provisions to explain its reluctance to heed the court's hints, even though PM Narendra Modi had on November 8 said those with genuine difficulties could expect a window after the year-end deadline.


But the court's argument that genuine cases should not be punished by turning hard earned money into trash saw the SG seeking time. “It will not be a general window but on a case to case basis. Give me two weeks, I will take instructions from the government,“ he said.

Scores of petitions were filed in the SC accusing the government of reneging on the promise and seeking relief to exchange scrapped currency notes. The SC had weeded out a majority of them, terming reasons for failure to meet the December 31 deadline as “cock and bull story“. However, 10 petitions survived the SC's stringent scrutiny and on Tuesday , the court sought Kumar's response. When the SG reiterated the Centre's consistent stand, a bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud said, “It is our duty to caution you. If a person is alone and suffered grave illness during the November 9 to December 30 period, it becomes absolutely impossible for him to deposit his old currency notes. If he can prove that it is his hard earned money and not somebody else's, he would surely require the window you had promised.

“We ourselves (the bench) have rejected many petitions as we found their reasons not genuine. But those with genuine difficulty must have a chance to convince the authorities. If you do not agree to open a window, then we will say it is open for such persons who can prove genuineness of their money and difficulty to deposit within December 30 deadline to seek relief from the government. He should have an opportunity to explain and replace the old money . You cannot turn his genuine money into trash.“

The bench said the government must sort this out. “We have seen cases where a person has lost his genuine money for no fault of his. The government cannot trash aperson's genuine money . You (the government) cannot render a person's genuine money go waste like this,“ it said. On March 21, the SC had told the government, “You must understand that these people are in dire straits. If they cannot establish the genuineness of the delay in depositing the scrapped currency , they would be liable for prosecution. The PM's speech as well as the notification that followed immediately after had promised to provide a window to people in such difficulty . But the ordinance did not provide any window except for NRIs and those Indians who were travelling abroad at that time. These people hoped that they will get another chance but the ordinance issued on the last day of deadline on December 31 suddenly closed that window. Everyone heard the PM and believed that the PM's words cannot be taken back.“

`TEMPORARY BASIS' - HC seeks report on appointment of law officers in Virudhunagar

The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Tuesday directed the government to file records pertaining to the appointment of law officers to courts in Virudhunagar district. A division bench headed by justice K K Sasidharan gave the direction on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate S Ramasubramanian from Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar. The petitioner's counsel told the court that the additional chief secretary passed a government order (GO) on May 25 appointing 15 advocates as law officers to the courts in the Virudhunagar district.

The government made the appointments without following mandatory procedure contemplated under the criminal procedure code.The government's action will affect the justice delivery system. Hence, it was necessary to stay all the proceedings based on the GO and quash the same, the counsel said.

Senior counsel appearing for one of the advocates appointed as public prosecutor said the appointments were made temporarily . The government already started the process of appointing law officers a few months ago. Based on it, the collector of Virudhunagar issued notification inviting applications from the legal fraternity. If the appointments were stayed, there would be vacancies for law officers' posts, he said.

The additional advocate general also said the appointments were a temporary measure and advocates appointed were eligible people to be appointed as law officers.

The division bench said that if it (government) had taken action properly , it would have made permanent appointments by this time.
