VC shares varsity’s vision over high tea

MANGALURU: To commemorate the end of the academic year, K Byrappa, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, hosted a high tea for the varsity's staff on Wednesday. Such a ceremony was celebrated for the first time in the 35-year-old university.

The VC's invitation came as a surprise to many. A simple note was circulated by registrar P S Yadapadithaya. It said: "As the academic year 2014-15 is coming to an end, honourable VC would like to thank you for your unstinted support in the success of all activities and programmes of the university. You are cordially invited for a high tea hosted by the VC on May 13 at 11.30am."

K Chinappa Gowda, faculty, department of Kannada, said, "We have had VCs in the past who have reviewed the standing of the departments at the end of each academic year. But that was more at an individual level." Echoing this sentiment, Jogan Shankar, a senior faculty, from the department of sociology said, "This is a rare gesture on the part of the VC to invite the stakeholders for high tea and share his vision for the university's development with us."

True to the spirit of the note, Byrappa said, "This is a thanksgiving high tea for projecting our university in a big way. The last five months has seen the number of academic activities increase enormously in the campus, which has become more vibrant. It has given the university a greater visibility in the eyes of the public and the stakeholders."

Thanking the faculty, Byrappa said that it is this support that has propelled the university further. He lauded the heads of various chairs for being active in their respective domains. B Narayana, registrar (evaluation), was present.

Mangalore University restricts intake of foreign students to 100

MANGALURU: Mangalore University's ambitious plan to attract more foreign students has hit an infrastructure roadblock. With its proposed international students' hostel at least year away from becoming a reality, the varsity plans to restrict their intake to 100 students.

The university is faced with the prospect of having to accommodate more foreign students who have applied for post-graduate and PhD programmes. Despite having initiated the plan to attract foreign students in the middle of academic year 2014-15, the university could attract just 19 foreign students - two for post-graduate programmes and the rest for doctoral research. But for the forthcoming academic year, 2015-16, the university has received more than 530 applications. The deluge of applications has set the university thinking on where to accommodate them.

Acknowledging this, vice-chancellor K Byrappa on Thursday said: "While the high number of applications is a vindication of the quality of education that the university offers, we need to have the facility in place for these students." The issue will be addressed once the international students' hostel is constructed on the sprawling Mangalagangothri campus.

Ravishankar Rao, director, International Students' Centre, said the university has for now accommodated the 19 foreign students in a floor of its refurbished Nethravathi guest house. "The surge in applications will be a logistical challenge for us," Rao admitted. The vice-chancellor is seized of the matter. "Applications have come in from Asian and African countries, and even from neighbouring Nepal."

The vice-chancellor said: "We will accommodate the new foreign students in a refurbished wing of the Souparnika hostel for boys. Likewise, women foreign students will be put up in a refurbished wing of the working women's hostel on the campus. The shortfall in accommodation for local students will be met by extending the existing boys' hostel."

An international students' hostel will encourage foreign students to consider studying at Mangalore University. "While PG students will get the hostel facility for two years of their stay on the campus, we are thinking of restricting this period to three years for PhD students. From the fourth year, the students can find accommodation on their own," Byrappa said. This is the norm followed in universities in the West so as not to inconvenience newcomers.

Wrong entry during e-payment puts Rs15L in another’s credit

MADURAI: The next time when you are making an e-payment, check twice for the payment code as there is a possibility it may go wrong. This is what happened to one M/s Sundaram Industries Limited, a manufacturer of rubber products functioning on Usilampatti Road, Kochadai, Madurai which had to undergo the hassles of running behind court over a wrong entry.

The company is an assesse under the department of Central Excise, Madurai division. On November 6, last year while making payment of Rs 15 lakh towards excise duty through e-payment, the company wrongly mentioned its assessee code as AABCS5320JXM001 instead of AABCS5320HXM001, wherein one letter viz., "J" had been wrongly mentioned instead of "H".

It resulted in the wrong entry of credit from the account of a different assessee (M/s Suri Impex, Gurgoan). Immediately after coming to know about it, the company effected another payment the next day to an extent of the same amount along with interest. Thereafter, the petitioner company sought refund of the payment made on November 6.

As it was not done so, the company authorised by its signatory filed a case before the high court bench seeking direction to the central excise to refund the amount.

During hearing, the central excise told the court that during the course of process of the petitioner's refund application, a letter was addressed to the assistant commissioner (AC) of Central Excise, Gurgoan, on January 1, last to confirm the payments said to have been made by the petitioner under the wrong code belonging to M/s Suri Impex.

The assistant commissioner certified that M/s Suri Impex had applied for surrender of registration and there are no dues pending against it at present. In the meantime, M/s Suri Impex also said that it had no objection in refunding Rs 15 lakh to the petitioners.

The petitioner also submitted a letter of State Bank of India certifying that the payment has wrongly been made. The petitioner also furnished an indemnity bond undertaking to indemnify the loss on account of the department sanctioning refund of Rs 15 lakh to them.

Following it, justice S Vaidyanathan passed order disposing the petition. "Admittedly, while making e-payment, the petitioner company has wrongly mentioned its assessee code. Apart from that, the petitioner has made the payment twice. In view of the above said position, the petitioner is entitled to get refund of the payment wrongly made on November 6. Therefore, the respondent (central excise) is directed to refund the said amount to the petitioner's company," the judge said.

MCI recommends 100 seats for new college in Chennai

The Medical Council of India has recommended to the Central government that the new medical college coming up on the Omandurar Estate be permitted to add 100 seats this academic year.

With this, the number of seats available in government medical colleges under single window counselling is expected to go up to 2,655.

Of these, 85 seats will be allotted to students in the State and 15 seats will be reserved for All India Quota.

C. Bhirmanandham, MCI vice-president, said the inspection team was satisfied with the facilities in the college and had recommended that it be permitted to admit students for the 2015-2016 academic year.

He said all government medical colleges are slated to receive permission to admit students.

Airtel launches 4G trails in Chennai

Airtel mobile users in Chennai can now upgrade to 4G at 3G prices as the company has launched 4G trials in the city.

With the current 3G prepaid recharges or postpaid plans, users may be able to access the same quota of data at 4G speed, according to a press release.

Airtel customers with 4G mobile phones can avail this offer at Airtel’s retail touch points across Chennai and upgrade to a 4G SIM, the release said.

Users who have a 4G or LTE enabled handset and a 4G compatible SIM may have to just get into a 3G (postpaid) or 3G recharge, to receive 4G data. If a 4G SIM is inserted into a 3G handset, it will receive 3G network.

Some of the 4G compatible handsets include iPhone, Samsung A series, Redmi 2, Lenovo and One Plus.

Also, as part of a tie-up between Samsung India and Airtel, Samsung retail stores will facilitate 4G SIM swap for people opting to buy 4G mobiles. In addition, Samsung will also offer Airtel 4G SIMs with the handsets, the release said.

Airtel’s 4G services are currently available across India in Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, Chandigarh and Amritsar.
