VELLORE: Tatkal in Hindi stands for immediate. If you can do an operation just in 50 seconds, it would qualify for immediate, wouldn’t it? That’s how fast you can book a Tatkal railway ticket if you have the Rail Connect app on your phone, the Paytm eWallet and high-speed Internet. The facility has been available since April 9. The flip side is this: if you are not tech-savvy, chances are you may not get a Tatkal ticket. Since the volume of Tatkal tickets available is low, early birds could eat up all the berths once they get to know the app-way is this simple.
Though Rail Connect was launched on January 7, it was 10 days later that the first ticket was booked, that too for AC class. The railways has now quietly enabled commuters to use the app to book tickets for sleeper class as well. Previously, online Tatkal booking timings were between 10 am and 10.30 am for AC and from 11 am to 11.30 am for sleeper class. The restriction was meant to facilitate passengers who would prefer to do it the old-fashioned way, standing before booking counters for tickets. That cap is now off, so you can book your Tatkal ticket any time online.
“Booking Tatkal tickets is now possible in 50 seconds as you don’t have to fill any payment details if your app is pre-loaded with funds,” said IRCTC and Southern Railway sources.
Even as commuters can now book Tatkal railway tickets if they have the Rail Connect app on their smartphones, technology continues to draw flak. A railways passengers’ association alleged that the move would put the elderly and patients in hardship. It demanded a cap on tickets issued through the app.
“At a time when Tatkal tickets are in high demand and getting sold in a few minutes across India, the move is unwarranted and will only benefit smartphone and Internet companies,” says P Edward Jeni, secretary of the Kanyakumari district railway users’ association.
The app is also meant to help the railways cut cost. A railway source on condition of anonymity told Express that the staff at the booking counters would be scaled down over the next five years.

இதுதொடர்பாக, மனித வள மேம்பாட்டுத் துறை அமைச்சர் பிரகாஷ் ஜாவடேகருக்கு அவர் எழுதியுள்ள கடிதத்தில் கூறியிருப்பதாவது:
கணவரைப் பிரிந்து வாழும் தாய்மார்கள் சிலர் என்னை அணுகி, தங்களது பிள்ளைகளின் பட்டப் படிப்புச் சான்றிதழ்களை, தந்தையின் பெயரைக் குறிப்பிடாமல் பெறுவதில் சிரமங்கள் ஏற்படுவதாக முறையிட்டனர்.
மணமுறிவு ஏற்படுவதும், கணவன் - மனைவி பிரிந்து வாழ்வதும் சகஜமாகிவிட்ட இக்காலத்தில், அதற்கேற்ப விதிகளிலும் மாற்றம் கொண்டுவரப்பட வேண்டும்.
கணவரைப் பிரிந்து வாழும் தாய்மார்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பளிக்கும் வகையில், அவர்களின் கோரிக்கையை நிறைவேற்றும் வகையில் விதிகளிலும் மாற்றம் கொண்டுவரப்பட வேண்டியது அவசியம் என்று அந்தக் கடிதத்தில் மேனகா காந்தி குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

Objective is to bring down number of fatalities in road accidents, say police
Following the recent action of Madurai City police to intensify checks on motorists for violation of the rule mandating wearing of helmets, roadside helmet shops have sprouted in many parts of the city, indicating a considerable increase in the sale of the head gear.
Though the rule for compulsory wearing of helmets was enforced on July 1, 2015, following an order by the Madras High Court, the city police had decided to intensify the enforcement since April 1 as many were found to be flouring the rule.
The police had cited that almost half the fatalities in road accidents in the city in recent times were of those who did not wear a helmet. The objective was not to penalise motorcyclists but to ensure their safety and bring down the number of fatalities in road accidents.
Consequently, as the checks intensified, shops set up along the road near Madurai Corporation building, Mattuthavani bus stand, North Veli Street, Race Course Road, New Natham Road and other places are witnessing brisk sales. Though more people have begun to comply with the rule, a police official, however, said some people had been opting for cheap helmets that did not comply with safety regulations. Buyers of helmets sold on the roadside must verify whether they had genuine ISI certification, he said.

Dayal Nathan, CEO of Energyly, says Tariff Alarm is a simple device that could be fixed near the electricity meter.
A consumer could pre-set the units for the buzzer to start ringing as it hits the limit. Mr. Nathan said the device, for which a patent had been applied for and approval was pending, had bagged the second prize in the Make-in-India hackathon conducted by IIT-Bombay last year.
The product, priced at Rs. 999, is available for single-phase electricity meters only.
Smart remote
Another device that would serve Chennai, the city of summers, well is the ACF (air conditioner-fan) Toggler. During summer, residents operate air conditioners throughout the night and often end up with huge electricity bills.
Now, a Chennai-based energy company has come out with a simple solution to avoid this.
The indigenously designed and manufactured ACF Toggler from Sans Energy would come in handy for those who want to avoid running ACs through the night and switch on their fans.
The device helps in operating ACs and fans with a remote device.
This helps avoid the need for a person to wake up in the middle of the night to switch off the AC and switch on the fan.
V. Rajan, chairman and managing director of Sans Energy, who conceptualised the device, said: “Lack of any electrical device to automatically switch off ACs and put on the fan created the necessity for this remote-controlled equipment.”
The device controls the ACs and fans with a remote that has various pre-set timing mode options, depending on users’ requirements.
The company has applied for a patent for the device, Mr. Rajan added.
