அண்ணா பல்கலைக்கழக வளாகத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள சென்னை மையத்தில் மட்டும் விளையாட்டுப் பிரிவு விண்ணப்பதாரா்களுக்காக ஜூன் 17 ஆம் தேதி வரை சான்றிதழ் சரிபார்ப்பு நடத்தப்படுகிறது.

இதுகுறித்து தமிழ்நாடு பொறியியல் சோ்க்கை செயலா் ரைமண்ட் உத்தரியராஜ் கூறியது:

 அசல் சான்றிதழ் சரிபார்ப்பில் பங்கேற்காதவா்கள் கலந்தாய்வில் பங்கேற்க அனுமதிக்கப்படமாட்டார்கள்.

எனவே, இதுவரை சன்றிதழ் சரிபார்ப்பில் பங்கேற்காத தமிழகம் முழுவதும் உள்ள மாணவா்கள், சென்னையில் கடைசி நாளான ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமையன்று பங்கேற்கலாம் என்றார்.

Chennai: The Madras high court has asked police to crack the whip on brokers who lure foreign students to medical colleges in the state without informing them about the eligibility norms. As many as 15 Iranian students joined the BDS course in a private college in the state without passing Neet, this being mandatory to pursue any medical course in the country. The court directed police to nab the brokers involved in the racket.

In his petition, Nasser Hamidavi Zegheiri, an Iranian student, submitted that he had completed pre-university diploma in Iran in 2002. The diploma course is equivalent to higher secondary in India. With the help of his friends he enquired about pursuing BDS in India. His friends suggested that he take admission in a medical college in Tamil Nadu. He paid `5 lakh and provisionally got admitted to the BDS course in Asan Memorial Dental College and Hospital, Keerapakkam, Chengalpet in 2016-17. He reached the country on a student visa. After paying the remaining Rs 20 lakh, he started attending classes in the college.

Meanwhile, Dr MGR Medical University sent him a letter stating that the institution was instructed to discharge all foreign students without Neet qualification admitted in the BDS course.

Nasser and the Iranian Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran gave a complaint to Kancheepuram police against the management of Asan Memorial Dental College after he was removed from the college without paying him the `25 lakh collected from him for admission. Later other 15 Iranian students also filed similar complaints before police.

When the matter came up earlier before Justice PN Prakash, the Asan Memorial Dental College and Hospital, issued a demand draft for `5.50 lakh to Naseer Hamidavi Zegheiri in the court on April 24. Subsequently, the college handed over a demand draft for Rs 47.90 lakh in favour of the Consulate General of Islamic Republic of Iran, to the Consul General.

Assistant Solicitor General Karthikeyan, who appeared for the Central Government on April 24 assured the court that the Centre will extend all help to the Iranian students to get their money refunded. He also handed over a list of the Iranian students who had paid fees. Counsel for the institution gave an undertaking to the court that the amount paid by all the students would be refunded, except for Daniel Vazirzadh, who allegedly did not pay any amount.

The counsel further submitted that the total amount comes to Rs 53,40,000 out of which Rs 5.50 lakh was already paid to Naseer and the balance amount of `47, 90,000 will be paid by demand drafts before June 11, 2018.

The counsel appearing for Zegheiri and the Consul General of Iran disputed the amount payable by the college and submitted that students paid more than the amount referred in the list. Justice PN Prakash said that at this juncture, this court does not want to go into this aspect. This court is of the view that at the outset, students should get back at least the admitted amounts immediately.

Vacating an interim stay on police to conduct a probe, the judge directed the institution to hand over all the demand drafts to the Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which had its account in Syndicate Bank, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, after giving a letter to the court as some of the students had returned to Iran. The court then posted matter for further hearing to July 2.

NAMAKKAL: Since there was insufficient enrollment in Namakkal and Rasipuram government schools, five Post Graduate (PG) teachers were transferred day before. The general counselling for teachers' transfer were commenced from 12th of this month across the state.

Over 600 teachers from Namakkal district had applied online for a transfer. According to the School Education Department (SED), as many as 17 higher secondary school headmaster posts, high schools headmaster posts, 25 PG teachers post and 20 graduate teachers posts were vacant. In this situation, the counselling for PG teachers were conducted in government Higher Secondary School (HSS) in Namakkal (South) and Rasipuram government school on Friday.

Owing to poor admission in Rasipuram government school, according to the CEO P Usha's order, four PG teachers were shifted to Namakkal North, and Namakkal girls HSS, Velakavundanpatti, Kozhikalnattham and another one from Namakkal HSS to Vittampalayam respectively. In each and every subjects, two PG teachers have been posted for the last 25 years at Namakkal south school and Rasipuram government school. Where as, lacking sufficient students' enrollments in recent years, one PG teacher post in each subjects are reduced.

Moreover, class XII board examinations results also were very poor in the two schools. In this situation only, the five PG teachers were transferred. When Express contacted SED officials they said that already the state government has decided to transfer excess teachers from government schools to fill the vacant. On the other hand, during the counselling session, five PG women teachers did not want to get promotions as Head Master (HM).

Through this refusal, the five cannot avail any promotions for the next three years. In the last year too, six teachers did not show interest in HM posts. " Though the HM post are vacant in Tiruchengode and Namakkal government girls school, no one female teacher from Namakkal district comes forward to obtain it. It is learnt that many teachers have been hesitating to become HM.

CHENNAI: In a relief to film actor Trisha Krishna, the Madras High Court today dismissed the Income Tax department's demand of Rs 1.11 crore penalty for alleged non-disclosure of income pertaining to 2010-11, observing that there was no deliberate concealment by her.

"We have concluded that the assessee is not guilty of deliberate concealment of income and is not liable to be mulcted with penalty under the Income Tax Act," a bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar ruled.

It was rejecting an appeal filed by the department against an order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, setting aside the penalty imposed on the actor.

The bench further said no substantial questions of law arose in the case and it deserved to be dismissed.

In her Income Tax Return (ITR) for 2010-11, Trisha had initially not disclosed a certain amount received from some sources as income.

Later, she filed a revised return declaring the amount as advance.

However, the assessment officer assessed it as income and levied a penalty of Rs 1.11 crore.

On an appeal moved by Trisha, the I-T commissioner had set aside the penalty order and the official's decision was upheld by the tribunal.

CHENNAI: Here is some bad news. Chennai will be among 21 cities which will run out of groundwater by 2020. Chennai Metrowater and Public Works Department are banking on desalination plants, rain water harvesting, check dams and restoration of water bodies to ward off the impending crisis.

Niti Aayog’s Composite Water Management Index, released this month, which highlights that Chennai will run out of ground water by 2020, has set off alarm bells. A Metrowater official said that the pressure on groundwater resources could be reduced once the two desalination plants with a joint capacity of 550 million litres per day (MLD) start functioning. Currently, more than 200 to 300 MLD of groundwater is extracted and there is a threat of water turning saline due to excess extraction.

The official said that both the desalination plants have got environmental clearance. The price bid for 150MLD desalination plan in Nemelli is to be opened after getting clearance from German funding agency KfW. Similarly, the 400MLD desalination plant, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will be ready by 2024, as a result the city will have 750 MLD of water on any given day.

The stress on groundwater will also be curtailed with the construction of 45MLD capacity Tertiary Treatment and Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant at Kodungaiyur and Koyambedu. It will soon be expanded to 60MLD. Thus, we will be having 120 MLD of treated water which will be given to industries, the official said.

The official also said the focus should also be on recharging groundwater through rain water harvesting, which helps conserve and augment the storage of groundwater aquifers, thereby improving the water table.

However, there is half-hearted measure in implementing rain water harvesting. Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is yet to implement the recommendations by consultant Aakash Ganga Trust in the development regulations of Chennai Metropolitan Area through an amendment. The audit of rain water harvesting by the consultant was carried out following the direction of the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

Similarly, a Water Resources Department official told Express that restoration of water bodies is crucial to ensure groundwater is protected. “They are restoring only 25 per cent of the water body. Seventy-five per cent is already encroached and polluted. If the entire water bodies are not restored, then it will not ensure water security,” the source cautioned.

CHENNAI: Now Chennai airport’s runway lights won’t black out due to power outage. The airport now has a power back-up facility for ground lighting system for runways and visual aid facilities, according to Chennai Airport director G Chandramouli.

Initially, the airport, the fourth busiest in the country, serving over 18 million passengers in 2017, was dependent only on generators, said Chandramouli.In case of a power outage, the airport would lose its runway lights - key visual systems used to guide aircraft on the ground or in the process of landing or taking off, virtually eliminating a critically important navigation system and thereby creating a safety concern.

The power back-up was introduced to ensure safe landing and take-off, the airport director said. Consul Neowatt, the Global Indian UPS company, has deployed two units of 200kVA Falcon family UPS systems in parallel redundant configuration to protect as well as provide power back up to the critical ground lighting system for runways and visual aid facilities.

“The cost for deploying the two units is close to Rs 60 lakh. They are of importance at airports where traffic is dense,” said the airport director.Consul Neowatt team of engineers and technical personnel worked closely with airport engineers to deliver a dependable power back-up solution.

Interestingly, this is the second airport ground lighting system (GLS) installation for Consul Neowatt in the last six months. The company has previously supported GLS at Mangalore airport apart from emergency lighting backup for multiple airport terminals across the country.
