CHENNAI: A nursing home at Chetpet has been directed to pay a man Rs 10 lakh as compensation for its ‘negligence’ that led to his wife delivering a stillborn baby and subsequently dying, allegedly due to lack of proper care.

On August 9, 2010, the complainant, Rajesh Kumar’s wife Thulasi was admitted in Joseph Nursing Home at 6.27 pm and till 12.15 pm Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) was recorded as good. Normal FHR should be between 110-160. According to the in-patient record at 12.15pm that day, FHR was 140-100.

On August 11, 2010, the delivery was recorded as normal, but when the child was born, the entry said it was delivered ‘still’ with lack of oxygen. “Having noted FHR is 100, doctors should have done the procedures of caesarean... Further, they also failed to record the FHR every 15 minutes proving their negligent act,” District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (North) presided over by President K Jayabalan said on May 23.

The forum directed the nursing home to pay Rs 10 lakh towards compensation in addition to Rs 6,06,875 towards medical expenses.

Kumar claimed no proper test was done by the nursing home to arrest Post Partum Haemorrhage of his wife and she also died. PPH means loss of blood following child birth. In this case after delivery, the mother was allegedly bleeding.

As her condition worsened, she was referred to Apollo FirstMed Hospital. The forum, however, said the hospital received the patient in a critical condition and had not committed any deficiency in service.

The forum highlighted that the nursing home did not state clearly in the written version to court whether the baby died before delivery or after delivery and why they informed the patient’s relatives at 6 pm, nearly 25 minutes after the baby’s death.

The nursing home, on its part, said there was nothing to indicate that the baby was deprived of oxygen, at any time.

“The FHR was always good and it was recorded periodically. There was no inconsistence in the report of the opposite parties and the death summary issued by the 4th opposite party (Apollo FirstMed). The complainant on his own admitted his wife suffered with multiorgan failure, resulting in her death. The complainant has not attributed specific incidents of negligence on the part of the opposite parties,” the nursing home said.

The nursing home contended that the complaint had not been filed within two years and that Kumar was not a competent person to speak about the negligence.

“Though the complaint is filed after two years with necessary condoning delay petition... The complainant’s wife died due to the negligent act of the opposite parties... hence the complainant is the only competent person to speak about the same,” the forum added.

NELLORE: An Associate Professor of ACSR Medical College was attacked on the college premises when he was in a meeting with the Nellore Government General Hospital superintendent and others, for allegedly sexually harassing a girl student. The incident led to tension at the college for sometime.

The girl, who was allegedly subjected to sexual harassment, is a final-year student of the ACSR Government Medical College. She was allegedly harassed by Associate Professor Chandrasekhar.
“When I attended for surgery postings at demo room, Associate Professor Chandrasekhar misbehaved with me. He tried to sexually assault me. He was involved in such attempts on some other students too,” the final-year student alleged.

It is learnt that she had taken up the issue with the medical college authorities but there was no action following which she confided her trouble in her parents and relatives.

On Thursday when the professors and associate professors were in a meeting with Superintendent of Nellore Government General Hospital over arrangements to be made for a youth festival, the relatives and friends of the student barged into the hall and picked up an argument with Chandrasekhar.

As the arguments heated up, one of the friends of the girl, Pragna, attacked Chandrasekhar. Though some professors tried to stop the attack, Pragna reportedly rained blows on Chandrasekhar leaving him with bleeding injuries. Police reached the place following information given by the college staff and took Pragna into custody.

“When we are in a meeting with associate professors and other staff, the relatives of the final-year student suddenly entered the meeting hall and argued with Chandrasekhar. One of the youngsters attacked Chandrasekhkar,” said Nellore GGH Superintendent Radha Krishna.

Students quitting private MBBS seats to pay fine up to Rs 10 lakh

CHENNAI: The state selection committee has announced that students who join self-financing medical colleges will have to pay Rs 10 lakh as penalty if they quit the course after August 19.

Those quitting between August 2 and 19 will have to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

The committee is planning to wrap up two rounds of counselling by July 21 and start mop-up counselling for all-India quota seats returned by DGHS after July 25. Courses in colleges will begin on August 1 and admissions will close on August 18.

“We want to ensure that students don’t opt out of the course after seeking admissions either because they don’t have the money or because they get admission into other courses or colleges,” said selection committee secretary G Selvarajan.

On Friday, the sale of applications for MBBS/ BDS courses touched 36,776 including 19,707 forms for admission to government colleges and 12,767 for admission to self-financing colleges under the government quota. So far 4,302 applications were given free of cost to students from the SC/ST community. The sale of applications will continue till June 18 and the last day to turn-in the filled up forms will be June 19.
