Absconding Indian liquor baron Vijay Mallya on Monday, who appeared in a court here in connection with an extradition case, said that he had not stolen anyone's money and his offer to pay back the loan amount of banks was not a bogus one. "I have not stolen anyone's money. My offer to return the loan amount of banks is not a bogus one," Mallya said while responding to questions from the media persons in the court premises. "Extradition is entirely a different matter," he said.

 Mallya said that he has filed comprehensive settlement applications before the Karnataka High Court in the matter related to repaying of loans to the banks. "I have filed comprehensive settlement applications before the Karnataka High Court which coincidently going to be head today," he said. Mallya, who arrived at the Westminster Magistrate's Court in London to hear the judgment in an extradition case, said that his legal team would review the judgment and take proper steps thereafter. "Whatever the judgment, my legal team will review the judgment and take proper steps thereafter," he said. "Yes, I have tweeted saying that I want to repay to bankers and others that have nothing to do with this extradition issue. It is a completely separate matter. 

My settlement matter is not related to the judgment which is going to be delivered today," he added. The Westminster Magistrates Court in London is expected to pronounce its judgment in the extradition case of Mallya on Monday. The court is hearing the case on India's request. On December 6, Mallya reiterated his wish to repay banks completely in a bid to end the narrative of him having "stolen" money from various lenders. A day after Mallya requested banks to accept money from him, the 62-year-old, once again, refuted reports of any connection between his proposed settlement offer and the upcoming ruling in a UK court with regard to his request to block his extradition to India. On Wednesday, the liquor baron, while refuting all allegations levelled against him, had offered to pay back the full amount of the principal loan he owed to multiple banks. 

"Respectfully to all commentators, I cannot understand how my extradition decision or the recent extradition from Dubai and my settlement offer are linked in any way. Wherever I am physical, my appeal is "Please take the money." I want to stop the narrative that I stole money," he tweeted. On Sunday, a joint team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) led by CBI Joint Director A Sai Manohar left for the United Kingdom (UK) for the court proceedings. Earlier, CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana was leading this case. Earlier on Friday, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the ED on a plea filed by Mallya seeking a stay on the proceedings initiated by the ED to declare him a fugitive economic offender and confiscate his assets. Mallya is facing money-laundering charges in the United Kingdom after India initiated extradition proceedings against him. Both the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have filed several cases for alleged loan default against him. Mallya has been residing in the UK for the past two years. (ANI)

A United Kingdom court has allowed the extradition of businessman Vijay Mallya to India to face charges of financial irregularities running into thousands of crores.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot ruled that there was no evidence which allowed her to find that if extradited, Mallya was “at real risk of suffering a flagrant denial of justice” or that “the prosecution is politically motivated”.

“Having considered evidence as a whole. There is a case to answer,” she said as she ruled that the liquor baron could be extradited to India to stand trial on the charges brought by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

“If the conduct occurred in this jurisdiction, the conduct would constitute the offences of making false representations to make a gain for himself, conspiracy to defraud and money laundering,” she added, referring the extradition case to Secretary of State Sajid Javid, who will pass an order based on the verdict.

The defence team has the right to file for a permission to appeal in the Chief Magistrate’s ruling in the UK High Court.

The verdict was welcomed in India. Union finance minister Arun Jaitley called it a “great day” for India.

“Great Day for India. No one who cheats India will go scot free.The Judgement of UK’s Court is welcome. An offender benefited during the UPA. The NDA brings him to book,” he said in a tweet.

“We welcome the decision and hope to bring Dr Vijay Mallya back soon. CBI has its own inherent strengths. We worked hard on this case. CBI was always strong on facts and legally we were confident while pursuing extradition process,” said CBI spokesman Abhishek Dayal. A joint team of the CBI and ED led by CBI joint director A Sai Manohar are in the United Kingdom for the court proceedings.

Before the hearing, Mallya, entering the court, told media that whatever the judgement, his legal team will review it and “take proper steps thereafter”.

“Yes I have tweeted saying that I want to repay, that has nothing to do with this extradition issue. It’s a completely separate matter,” he said

Mallya also said that he has not stolen anyone’s money and his offer to pay back the loan amount of banks is not a bogus one.

The 62-year-old former boss of Kingfisher Airlines has been on bail since his arrest on an extradition warrant in April last year. He has contested that the extradition case against him is “politically motivated” and the loans he has been accused of defrauding on were sought to keep his now-defunct airline afloat.

“I did not borrow a single rupee. The borrower was Kingfisher Airlines. Money was lost due to a genuine and sad business failure. Being held as guarantor is not fraud,” he said in a post on Twitter recently.

“I have offered to repay 100 per cent of the principal amount to them. Please take it,” the flamboyant businessman tweeted earlier.

2 held in RGUHS fake markscard, degree certificate case

Bengaluru: More than eight months after tens of fake markscards and degree certificates bearing the seal and stamp of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) surfaced, Nandini Layout police have arrested a physiotherapist and a computer operator working with the Bethel Medical Mission (BMM). 

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is already probing a case against colleges run by BMM. Fredrick John and Raji S have been taken into custody based on a complaint from the mission.

“The college had filed a complaint that these two had created fake hall tickets and edited or doctored markscards among other things. Our investigation found evidence in the hard drives seized from the accused. We had arrested them on November 24 and produced before court. They were remanded in judicial custody and we’ve now taken them into custody for questioning,” a Nandini Layout police inspector said.

CID sources said the investigators have already sought permission from their seniors to get custody of John and Raji, even as they wait for a forensic report of the documents submitted by RGUHS.

The issue was first reported by STOI on March 2. In June, RGUHS had submitted a 1,200-page report on the matter, in which it claimed that BMM was involved in the racket. The case was subsequently handed over to the CID.

“RGUHS, as part of its report, had submitted several markscards and other documents. So far, our investigation has not found any beneficiary of these fake documents, while students from the college had their original markscards and certificates. So, we sent the documents to the forensic department and are awaiting a report,” a CID official said.

College claims innocence

BMM chairman Sunny D, however, argued that his competitors have used the services of John and Raji to tarnish BMM’s image. Claiming that John is a habitual offender, Sunny said he was confident that the probe will clear the name of his college.

“Raji and John have unmatched skills in editing, drafting and photoshopping. They have plotted and drafted letters to the governor, CM, ministers, RGUHS VC, police commissioner, medical education department, registrar and various media houses,” he claimed.

He claimed that Raji, who completed her nursing course from BMM, had not paid her fees and that she had even borrowed Rs 50,000 from him for her mother’s treatment.

“When she did not pay the fees, we only gave her the markscards of the first three years and the provisional degree certificate, but withheld the final year markscard. We even employed her so she could work and repay the money she owed the institution, but she went on to get a duplicate markscard by providing a false affidavit and nursed a grudge against us. I have screenshots of her WhatsApp messages,” Sunny claimed.

‘Arrested was complainant too’

RGUHS vice-chancellor Dr Sachidananda, while stating that the university can only comment after the CID and the police complete their probes, said: “Raji was one of the complainants against BMM.”

Police, however, denied any knowledge of Raji being a complainant against BMM, and the inspector said the college had filed a complaint against her and she was arrested based on the evidence gathered during investigation.

இந்திய, அமெரிக்கத் திரைப்பட நடிகர்கள் பரஸ்பரம் இரு நாடுகளையும் சென்று பார்ப்பதன் மூலம் இரு நாட்டு மக்களிடையே புரிதல்களும் அன்பும் பெருகவும், உறவு வலுப்படவும் உதவும் என்று தூதர் தாமஸ் சைமன்ஸ் சுட்டிக்காட்டினார். சர்வதேசத் திரைப்பட சங்கத்தின் ஹாலிவுட் கிளை நிர்வாகிகள் முதல் முறையாக இந்தியத் திரைப்பட நடிகர் ஒருவரைக் கௌரவிப்பதைப் பூரிப்புடன் அவர் கூறினார். நிகழ்ச்சிக்குத் தலைமை தாங்கிய தென்னிந்திய திரைப்பட வர்த்தகசபைத் தலைவர் ஏ.எல்.சீனிவாசன், சிவாஜியை வழியனுப்பும் நிகழ்ச்சியில் சர்வதேசத் திரைப்பட சங்கத் தொடக்கமும் அமைவது மிகவும் பொருத்தமானது என்றார்.

அன்றைய திரைப்படப் பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு சினிமா வெறும் பொழுதுபோக்குச் சாதனமல்ல, நாடகத்தைப் போலவோ ஓவியம் அல்லது இசையைப் போலவோ அது வெறும் கலை அல்ல. அது அவர்களுடைய வாழ்வோடு நேரடியாக உறவாடியது, அவர்களுக்கு அன்பையும் அறத்தையும் போதித்தது, ஒருவகையில் வாழ்வின் எல்லாமுமாக இருந்தது.

குறிப்பாக, சிவாஜி நடித்த திரைப்படங்கள். 1950, 60-களில் அவரது ஒரு திரைப்படம் வெளியாகும்போது வீடுகளுக்குள் அடைந்து கிடந்த பெண்கள் அவரது ‘பாசமலர்’ அல்லது ‘பாலும் பழமும்’ போன்ற ஒரு திரைப்படத்தைப் பார்ப்பதற்காக திரைப்பட அரங்குகளுக்குப் போனார்கள். எம்ஜிஆரின் ரசிகர்களைப் போல் திரையரங்க வாசல்களில் கட்-அவுட்கள் வைத்து, பட்டாசு கொளுத்தி ஆரவாரமான கொண்டாட்டங்கள் சிவாஜி ரசிகர்களிடம் வெளிப்படாது. மாறாக, திரையரங்குக்குச் செல்லும்போது தங்களுடைய சகோதரர்களை, காதலரை, தந்தையரைக் காணச்செல்வது போன்ற ஓர் உணர்வு அவர்களுக்கு இருந்தது.

தங்களை நேசிக்கும் தங்களுக்காகக் கண்ணீர் சிந்தும் தங்களுக்காக எல்லாவிதமான தியாகங்களையும் செய்யத் தயாராக இருக்கும் ஒரு நாயகனைத் திரையில் காணும்போது அவரோடு எளிதில் தங்களைப் பிணைத்துக்கொண்டார்கள். ‘பாசமலர்’ படத்தில் சாவித்திரியை நெஞ்சோடு அணைத்துக்கொண்டு, ‘கைவீசம்மா கைவீசு, கடைக்குப் போகலாம் கை வீசு’ என சிவாஜி விம்மியபோது திரைக்கு எதிரே உட்கார்ந்திருந்த பெண்கள் கண்ணீர் வடித்தார்கள், சிலர் கதறி அழுதார்கள், எல்லோருமே பரிதவித்துப்போனார்கள்.

சிவாஜியின் படங்களில் அவரது ஏதாவதொரு பாத்திரம் பெறும் சிறிய வெற்றியைக் கண்டு குதூகலித்தார்கள். அவர் வாய்விட்டுச் சிரிக்கும் காட்சிகளைக் காண வாய்க்கும்போது புன்னகைத்தார்கள். அவற்றை அவர்கள் தம் முழு வாழ்நாள் வரையிலும் நினைவில் வைத்திருக்க விரும்பினார்கள். அவரது திரைப்படம் அவரது ரசிகர்களுக்கு, குறிப்பாகப் பெண்களுக்கு நிச்சயமாகப் பொழுதுபோக்கு மட்டுமே அல்ல!

தனியார் பொறியியல் கல்லூரி ஆசிரியர்கள்: நவீனக் கொத்தடிமைகளா?

வசந்தவாணன். வயது 30. சென்னை அருகே, தனியார் பொறியியல் கல்லூரியில் உதவிப் பேராசிரியராகப் பணிக்குச் சேர்ந்துள்ளார். அப்போது கல்லூரி நிர்வாகம் அவருடைய கல்விச் சான்றிதழ்கள் அனைத்தையும் வாங்கி வைத்துக்கொண்டது. விதிப்படி சான்றிதழ்களைக் கல்லூரி நிர்வாகம் வாங்கி வைத்துக்கொள்ளக் கூடாது என்பது வேறு விஷயம் (சான்றிதழ்களைச் சரிபார்ப்பதற்காக வாங்கும் கல்லூரிகள், அந்தப் பணி முடிந்ததும் திரும்பத் தந்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று அண்ணா பல்கலைக்கழகமும், அகில இந்திய தொழில்நுட்பக் கல்விக் குழுவும் (ஏஐசிடிஇ) கல்லூரிகளுக்கு எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்திருக்கின்றன என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது). இதற்கிடையே, அவர் முன்பு விண்ணப்பித்திருந்த அரசுக் கல்லூரியில் அவருக்குப் பணி நியமனம் கிடைத்தது. அரசுப் பணி கிடைத்துவிட்டதால் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்த அந்த இளைஞர், தனது சான்றிதழ்களைத் திருப்பித் தருமாறு பொறியியல் கல்லூரி நிர்வாகத்திடம் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். சான்றிதழ்களைக் கொடுத்து வாழ்த்தி அனுப்புவார்கள் என்று அவர் நினைத்திருக்கலாம். ஆனால், சான்றிதழ்களைக் கொடுக்காமல் தொடர்ந்து அவரை அலைக்கழித்திருக்கிறது கல்லூரி நிர்வாகம். ஒருகட்டத்தில் விரக்தியடைந்த அவர் தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டார். கடந்த மாதம் நடந்த சம்பவம் இது.

இன்றைய சூழலில் தனியார் கல்லூரிகளில் பணிபுரியும் உதவிப் பேராசிரியர்களுக்கு மாதச் சம்பளம் ரூ.15,000 – 18,000. ஆண்டு ஊதிய உயர்வையெல்லாம் எதிர்பார்க்க முடியாது. ஒருவர் 10 ஆண்டுகள் பணிபுரிந்தால் அதிகபட்சமாக அவர் பெறக்கூடிய ஊதியம் ரூ.30,000. பொறியியல் முடித்து தொழில் நிலையங்களில் பணிபுரியும் ஒருவர், மூன்றே ஆண்டுகளில் அந்தச் சம்பளத்தைப் பெற்றுவிட முடியும். அரசுக் கல்லூரிகளில் பணிபுரிபவர்களுக்கு ரூ.50,000-க்கும் அதிகமான சம்பளம் கிடைக்கிறது. தனியார் கல்லூரிகளில் மூன்று மாதங்களுக்கு ஒரு முறைதான் சம்பளத்தையே கண்ணில் பார்க்க முடியும்.

இன்னொரு கொடுமையும் நடக்கிறது. ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் ஐந்து மாணவர்களைச் சேர்த்துவிட வேண்டும் என்று பல தனியார் கல்லூரிகள் ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு இலக்கு வைக்கின்றன. இல்லையென்றால், இருக்கிற வேலையையும் இழக்க நேரிடும். நிலையற்ற வருமானத்தால் குடும்பத்தின் அடிப்படை வசதியைக்கூட ஒருவரால் செய்ய இயலாது. இந்நிலையில், எவ்வாறு தரமான கல்வி மாணவர்களுக்கு அளிக்கப்படும்? ஒருகாலத்தில் மருத்துவத் துறைக்கு நிகராக மதிக்கப்பட்ட துறை இன்று அதன் சீரழிவின் உச்சத்தில் இருக்கிறது.

அதிகக் கட்டணங்கள் வசூலிக்கும் கல்லூரிகளைப் பற்றியும், சான்றிதழ்களைப் பிணையாகப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளும் கல்லூரிகளைப் பற்றியும் முறையான ஊதியங்கள் வழங்காத கல்லூரிகளைப் பற்றியும் தங்களிடம் புகார் அளியுங்கள் என்று அகில இந்திய தொழில்நுட்பக் கல்வியின் கூட்டமைப்பும், அண்ணா பல்கலைக்கழகமும் கூறுகின்றன. ஆனால், புகார் அளிப்பதற்கான வழிமுறைகளைப் பற்றிய தெளிவான வழிகாட்டுதல்களை அவர்கள் தருவதில்லை. யாரேனும் புகார் அளித்தால்தான் நடவடிக்கை என்பதை எப்படிப் புரிந்துகொள்வது? முறையான கண்காணிப்பும் கட்டுப்பாடும் இருந்தால் தனியார் கல்லூரிகள் இப்படி அத்துமீறுமா?

சட்டரீதியாக ஒரு பிரச்சினையை எவ்வாறு அணுக வேண்டும் என்று நமக்குப் பயிற்றுவிக்கப்படவில்லை என்பது ஒரு முக்கியப் பிரச்சினை. நம் அடிப்படை உரிமைகளைக்கூடப் போராடித்தான் பெற்றாக வேண்டும் எனும் நிலையில், நமது அடிப்படை உரிமை என்ன என்பதுகூட நமக்குத் தெரிவதில்லை. இங்கு, தனியார் கல்லூரி ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு என்று ஒரு கூட்டமைப்பு இல்லை. ஜவுளிக் கடைகளில் 12 மணி நேரம் நின்றபடி வேலைசெய்யும் ஊழியர்களைப் பார்க்கும்போதும், தொழிலகங்களில் ஆபத்தான சூழ்நிலைகளில் எவ்விதப் பாதுகாப்புமின்றிப் பல மணி நேரம் பணிபுரிபவர்களைப் பார்க்கும்போதும் தோன்றுவது இதுதான். ஏன் நம்மால் ஒன்றுதிரள முடியவில்லை. ஏன் நம்மால் நம் உரிமைக்கான போராட்டத்தை முன்னெடுக்க முடியவில்லை?
