CHENNAI: AS morning visibility is already poor due to dense fog, Chennai airport authorities have requested inbound airlines to be prepared to reschedule early morning flights on Bhogi day (January 14) as smog is likely to disrupt flight operations. Malaysian airlines AirAsia has already rescheduled one of its flights.

Bonfires lit by residents as part of the Pongal festival in the presence of high humidity, low temperature and moisture may cause smog which disrupts visibility. Last year, more than 16 flights including nine international ones had to be diverted to Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Coimbatore. Further, 42 flights were delayed and 40 more cancelled due to smog reducing the visibility to under 50 metres.

G Chandramouli, Director, Chennai International Airport, told Express this year’s weather is far worse. “We have conducted a meeting with inbound airlines and apprised them about the likelihood of smog disrupting flight operations. They have been sensitised to inform passengers about flight status and rescheduling. On our part, alerts will be put out on AirSewa and Chennai airport app on a dynamic basis.”

The official said letters had been written to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and city Police Commissioner to carry out awareness and patrolling in areas surrounding airport to restrain people from holding bonfires.


It’s a practice among people to light bonfire with logs of wood, cow-dung cakes, other solid-fuels and old wooden furniture. However, some burn old tyres, tubes, plastic materials, old mates, broomstick, garbage and a few other harmful materials, which release harmful pollutants that cause smog and makes breathing difficult.

Chandramouli said the pollution control board had been requested to form special teams to create awareness in which airport officials will also take part. “We can not directly go and play with the sentiments of people and our CISF security cannot move out.”

On Friday, the Chennai airport general manager had a meeting with the TNPCB authorities on initiating pro-active measures. There are about 80 flights, both international and domestic combined, which use the Chennai airport till 10 in the morning and are vulnerable, if smog hits the city. 

Awareness campaign launched

Meanwhile, TNPCB Chairman Shambu Kallolikar has flagged off awareness vehicles. A total of 15 autorickshaws have been engaged to campaign in 15 corporation zones in Chennai through public address system, placards and pamphlets.

Pollution watch

As per TNPCB data, all 15 corporation zonal areas are measuring PM10 levels. These are inhalable particles, with diameters less than 10 micrometers

Valasarvakkam has recorded highest PM10 value of 386 µg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter) followed by Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar (353), Ambattur (343) and Kodambakkam (339)

The least pollution zone was Meenambakkam that recorded 135. The prescribed standard value for PM10 is 100

Meanwhile, the real time air quality monitoring stations run by CPCB — which measure PM2.5, a key pollutant — in Manali, Alandur and IIT Madras reveal that PM2.5 value has crossed 1,000 µg/m3 in Manali between 6 am to 10.30 am. In IIT Madras, it recorded 799 and Alandur 318 last year

TNPCB officials have attributed the increase in pollution levels to high humidity, low temperature and low wind speed. There was no dispersal and dilution of pollutant which is the reason for the higher values of particulate matter. Same conditions are prevailing this year

College told to pay Rs 5.25 lakh for running course without nod

The college denied all the allegations and said it was a renowned educational institution and did not require approval from AICTE or Council of Architects for offering the course.

CHENNAI: For offering a B.Arch course without obtaining proper approval from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for 2005-2006 and for not providing basic amenities to students, Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute was ordered by the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission to pay Rs 5.25 lakh to a former student. The commission also ordered the college to refund the one-year fee of Rs 87,500 paid.

The matter dates back to June 2005 when Reshmi Divakaran, of Kottur, joined the Maduravoyal branch of the institute after paying a fee of Rs 56,600 for the first semester along with other fees of Rs 900. In her complaint, she said after the course started, she found that classes were not held regularly due to dearth of teaching staff and college buses did not operate regularly.

“Even after I paid a separate fee for transportation, I had to go home by myself as college buses did not run everyday. Also, the classrooms were in a dilapidated condition. But, I continued because I wanted to complete the course and get my degree,” she said.


She also said during the 2005 floods, classes were not held as the college was inundated for several days and a part of the building was razed down by the government as it was an encroachment built on poromboke. Though she paid the fee of `30,000 for the second semester, no classes were held. “Later, my friends and I found that the college had not obtained approval from Council of Architects and AICTE, which is required for conducting B.Arch degree classes. Hence, I shifted to another college. Because of this, I had to repeat one year of the course in the new college,” said Reshmi.

The college denied all the allegations and said it was a renowned educational institution and did not require approval from AICTE or Council of Architects for offering the course. The commission said the college did not provide any proof to back its claim of having approval from the authorities concerned.

“Also, the college did not make any alternative arrangements to conduct classes during the 2005 floods. Almost all the students who were admitted in B.Arch course left the institution as it was not authorised by AICTE or because classes were not held regularly. This clearly amounts to deficiency in service and unfair trade practice,” said the commission Presiding Member K Baskaran and Memer S M Latha Maheswari.

Pune medical college’s financial crunch puts 900 students in a fix

Over 900 medical students at Pune’s Smt Kashibai Navale Medical College and General Hospital, one of the state’s most sought-after private colleges and also the one which charges the highest MBBS fees, are staring at an uncertain future, as its trust has run into a financial crisis.

Power supply was cut on December 18 over a pending bill of over Rs 1.6 crore. While the college is managing classes with generators, the hospital is completely shut, giving no scope for clinical practice.

Undergraduate students at the college pay annual fees of Rs 12 lakh, excluding hostel and exam fee, and PG students Rs 14 lakh annually. While PG students have not been paid stipend for months, salaries of teachers are pending since September 2018. “Teachers are somehow conducting lectures and practicals using generators but our clinical training is largely affected. We have not practised for almost a month,” said a student. Resident doctors on campus, too, have not received any practical training. First-year students have their term-end exams scheduled towards the end of January.

Students’ council members said they may move court if no solution is offered in a week. A parent, who met government officials on Friday, said, “Our kids’ education is affected. The college is among the most sought-after. We hope the government intervenes.”

During a recent meeting with the state’s medical education secretary, Directorate of Medical Education and Research officials and Maruti Navale, president of Sinhagad Technical Education Society, the students and parents were asked to wait till January 16 for clarity. DMER director Pravin Shingare said a hearing is scheduled on January 16 and the trustees expect a favourable order. “A meeting of medical education department officials is scheduled a day after the hearing to take a decision,” he said. The state will intervene in the matter post the hearing. Navale’s accounts were sealed by the IT department last year.

Ola and Uber drivers’ union threatens fresh strike

The Ola and Uber drivers’ union has once again threatened a strike here if their demands for better earnings are ignored by the state government. The date of the strike is yet to be decided, union leaders said.

Govind Mohite of Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh said, “We had organised a 12-day strike in October-November last year, and called it off after state transport minister Diwakar Raote organised talks between us and the management. Our drivers were happy with the Diwali incentives, but subsequently we went on a second round of agitation, when our delegation was assured by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis that he would look into our demands and possibly call for a meeting after the state assembly winter session.” It has been over a month and driver partners are disappointed that their demands seem to have been “ignored” by the government, he said.

Some drivers who went on a hunger strike in Ghatkopar to raise some issues against the aggregator firms on Friday night were picked up by police. “We strongly condemn the action. We have decided to raise our voice once again and request the government to intervene and redress our grievances,” said Mohite. He said if the drivers’ issues were not redressed soon, there could be another agitation.

The driver partners are demanding a minimum fare of Rs100-150 due to fuel price hikes in recent months.

திரை விமர்சனம் - விஸ்வாசம்

அடிதடி ஆளாக சொந்தங்களுடன் கொடுவிளார்பட்டியில் வசிப்பவர் அஜித். அங்கு மருத்துவ முகாமுக் காக வரும் டாக்டர் நயன்தாராவுக்கு அஜித் மீது காதல் வருகிறது. இருவரும் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்கின்றனர். மகள் பிறந்த பிறகு, கருத்து வேறுபாடு ஏற்பட்டு, இருவரும் பிரிகின்றனர். மகளுடன் மும்பை சென்று வாழ்கிறார் நயன்தாரா. ஊர் திருவிழாவுக்கு நயன்தாரா அழைக்க, மும்பை செல்கிறார் அஜித். அங்கு போனதும், மகளின் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து இருப்பது தெரிகிறது. அதன் பிறகு அஜித் என்ன செய்தார்? நயன்தாராவுடன் இணைந்தாரா? ஆபத்தில் இருக்கும் மகளைக் காப்பாற்றினாரா? என்பதே ‘விஸ்வாசம்'

அவ்வளவாக வெளியில் தலை காட்டாத அஜித்தை திரையில் பார்ப்பதே, ரசிகர்களுக்கு கொண்டாட்டமான அனுபவம்தான்! அதிலும், ‘தூக்குதுரை’யாக படம் முழுக்க வேஷ்டி, முறுக்கு மீசை, மதுரை வட்டார மொழி என புதுவிதமாக வெளுத்து வாங்குகிறார். ரோபோ சங்கர், தம்பி ராமையாவுடனும், நடுவே யோகிபாபுவுடனும் சேர்ந்து அஜித் செய்யும் அலப்பறைகளுக்கு விசில் பறக்கிறது. படம் நெடுக அவர் பேசுகிற இங்கிலீஷுக்கு தியேட்டரே குலுங்கிச் சிரிக்கிறது. முதல் பாதி முழுக்க அடிதடி, காமெடி, காதல் ரவுசு என அதகளம் பண்ணுபவராகவும், பிற்பாதியில் மகளுடனே இருந்துகொண்டு பாசத்துக்கு ஏங்கி மருகுகிற அன்பான அப்பாவாகவும் நடிப்பிலும் புதியதொரு பாய்ச்சல் காட்டியிருக்கிறார் அஜித்.

தூக்குதுரையின் மனைவி நிரஞ்சனாவாக நயன்தாரா. ஆரம்பத்தில் தூக்குதுரை மீது போலீஸில் புகார் கொடுப்பதும், பிறகு கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக அவரைப் புரிந்துகொள்வதும், ஒருகட்டத்தில் கணவ ரைப் பிரிவதும் என கனமான நாயகி வேடம். கிடைக்கும் தருணங்களிலெல்லாம் நடிப்பில் ஸ்கோர் செய்கிறார்.

அஜித்துக்கு ‘மாஸ்’ காட்சிகளைக் கொஞ்சம் குறைத்து, முழுக்க குடும்ப உறவுகளுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்து திரைக்கதை அமைத்துள்ளார் இயக்குநர் சிவா. ஆனால், அதில் பழைய படங்களின் சாயல் அதிகமாகத் தெரிகிறது. டாக்டரான நயன்தாரா, திருமணமானவுடன் மூக்குத்தி போட்டுக்கொண்டு கிராமத்துப் பெண்ணாக வாழ்கிறார். திடீரென மும்பையில் மல்டி மில்லியன் பெண் தொழிலதிபராகவும் அவரை காட்டுகின்றனர். இதெல்லாம் படத்துடன் ஒட்டவில்லை.

‘என்னை அறிந்தால்’ படத்தில் குழந்தை நட்சத்திரமாக ஒளிர்ந்த அனிகா, இப்படத்தில் அஜித்தின் மகளாக நடிக்கிறார். பயம், ஆர்வம், கலவரம், கவலை, கோபம், மரண பீதி என எல்லா உணர்வுகளையும் மிகையின்றி சிறப்பாக வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார். அஜித் - அனிகா வரும் காட்சிகள், படம் பார்க்கும் அப்பா - மகள்களிடம் கண்ணீரை வரவைத்துவிடுகின்றன.

மகளுக்காக வில்லனாக மாறுகிறார் ஜெகபதி பாபு. அவரும் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் கச்சிதமாகப் பொருந்தியுள்ளார். இடை வேளைக்குப் பிறகு வரும் விவேக், காமெடி என்ற பெயரில் பண்ணும் விஷயங்கள் எரிச்சல்.

இமான் இசையில் வரும் ‘கண்ணான கண்ணே' பாடல் சரியான இடத்தில் பயன்படுத் தப்பட்டுள்ளது. மற்ற பாடல்கள் கேட்க சுமாராக இருந்தாலும், காட்சிப்படுத்தியது அருமை. பின்னணி இசையில் தன் பணியை சிறப்பாக செய்துள்ளார் இமான். படத்தின் அடுத்த பலம் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் வெற்றி. கிராமத்து வயல்கள், வாய்க்கால் கள், பாலங்களை அழகாக கேமரா வழியே புகுத்தி, நமக்குள் அந்த அழகைக் கடத்தி விடுகிறார். பிற்பாதியில் மும்பையின் அழகு, ஜன நெரிசல், சாலைகளையும், பர்த்டே கொண்டாட்ட குதூகலங்களையும் வெகு அழ காகப் படமாக்கியுள்ளார். ரூபனின் எடிட் டிங்கும் கச்சிதம். சண்டைக்காட்சிகளில் திலீப் சுப்பராயனின் உழைப்பு தெரிகிறது. மழைச் சண்டை, கழிவறை சண்டைக் காட்சிகள் அதிரடியாக உள்ளன.

கதையில் எவ்வித புதுமையும் இல்லை. அடுத்தடுத்த காட்சிகள் எளிதாக ஊகிக்கக்கூடியதாக இருக்கின்றன. இது படத்தின் பெரிய மைனஸ். படத்தில் பல லாஜிக் மீறல்கள் இருந்தாலும், கிளைமாக்ஸை நல்ல கருத் தோடு, சென்டிமென்ட்டாக முடித் திருக்கிறார்கள். ரசிகர்கள் மட்டு மின்றி, அனைவரும் தூக்குதுரையை தலையில் தூக்கிவைத்துக் கொண் டாடுவார்கள். ‘தல’ ரசிகர்களுக்கு ‘தலப் பொங்கல்’!
