MGR can be studied from many perspectives: Fans

TN CM had announced a chair on MGR at the International Institute of Tamil Studies. But is MGR a subject to be studied in universities?

Vivanesh.Parthiban@timesgroup.com  05.08.2019

If you start a discussion on fanbase and craze for actors in Indian cinema, you cannot skip actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MG Ramachandran’s name. Recently, the idea of creating a chair for MGR in Universities to study MGR as a research subject, was approved by the Tamil Nadu government, so that students have some referral work. Rajeshwari, a sexagenarian and an ardent MGR fan, who decided to write 100 books on the eve of MGR’s centenary celebration, has finished writing around 12 books. When we asked her what is there to study about MGR, she said, “There is a lot.”

WHAT CAN ONE LEARN FROM MGR?

Says Saidai Duraisamy, former Chennai Mayor, one among those who proposed the idea of including MGR as a subject in universities, “His title Vathiyar says it all. He is not an actor who acts, but someone who lives as a commoner in his films to teach the fellow folks of the country.” His films like Rickshawkaran and Padagotti, in which MGR plays the roles of rickshaw puller and fisherman, respectively, have made him a part of the lives of people of those communities, mostly downtrodden. Adds Rajeshwari, “You can study MGR from various perspectives — political, social, filmmaking and Tamil literature.” Tamil literature? “Yes,” she argues. And as an example, tells us how the romance scenes between MGR and his actresses in his films are framed according to the grammar of romance mentioned in Tamil Sangam. “Apart from cinema, the reformation program for Tamil alphabets was brought into effect by MGR,” adds Duraisamy.

FOREIGN RESEARCHERS ARE WORKING ON MGR AS A SUBJECT

Marcie Bower, an American, who came to Tamil Nadu in 2003 as a college student as part of the South Indian Term Abroad program, has done some informal research on MGR with the help of Rajeshwari, who was then working in Lady Doak College as a professor in the Tamil Department.

Why MGR addressed his fans ‘Rathathin Rathame’

Marcie’s article compares Arnold Schwarzenegger and MGR entering politics using the fame they gained as actors. In an email, Marcie told us, “The most fascinating thing about MGR and his fans are the intersection of hero-worship and politics, and I am still wondering how one man could leave such a legacy for generations who were not even adults when he was dead.”

FANS OR WORSHIPPERS?

All fans are somewhat crazy, but Kalaivanan took hero worship to the next level when he constructed a temple back in 2011 for MGR in Nathamedu, near Thiruninravur. “MGR is God for us and worshipping him has given health and wealth not only to our family, but to others who visit the temple as well,” Kalaivanan’s daughter, Sangeetha tells us, “Many people observe a one-month fast, from MGR’s death anniversary in December to his birthday in January, and come by foot to the temple.” Rajeshwari reminisces an incident back in the 70s, when poor fans started giving blood for money to see MGR films. This incident had worried MGR himself, who had then instructed his fans not to do such foolish things. After this incident, MGR started addressing the crowd as ‘Rathathin Rathame’, which means blood and kin in Tamil.

ARE PEOPLE STILL FOLLOWING MGR?

Yes, says Kumar, MGR Makkal Mandram member from Madurai. “MGR’s films are still running in theatres and you can see youngsters in their 20s and 30s enjoying his films. What more do you want as an evidence of the man’s fan following?” he asks. Duraisamy opines that MGR teaches us a way of life with his films and songs. He says, “If you follow the lyrics of any one introduction song of MGR in your life, it is more than enough to lead a good and meaningful life.” Kumar says he has never touched alcohol or cigarettes in his life

because true MGR fans would not even dare to. “MGR has only once consumed alcohol in his films, and that too, because he was tricked by the villains to drink in the film Sange Muzhangu.” Kumar’s eyes tear up as he tells us, “MGR will never fade away from memories of fans like us.”

Sathya Murthy, a 35-year-old who would have been but a toddler when MGR died, says he was influenced by his father, who was a MGR veriyan. He now goes every week to the MGR memorial, and cleans the place and distribute sweets to the people there. He does this week after week without fail, to show the respect he has towards the leader.

Senior citizen loses ₹25L to SIM swap fraud

Mayur.Shetty@timesgroup.com

Mumbai:05.08.2019

A senior citizen is struggling to recover ₹25 lakh debited fraudulently from his bank account using a duplicate SIM card. The amount was transferred into four accounts across the country. While the police are investigating the money trail, the multi-state nature of the crime is making recovery difficult.

When Mahavir Mittal, a retired government employee in Noida, was unable to access his Indus Ind Bank account through net banking and found his Airtel mobile connection blocked, he approached the bank.

On June 14, the bank informed Mittal that ₹25.1 lakh was transferred from his account. The fraudulently transactions took place on June 12. The amount was transferred to three different accounts — ₹5 lakh to a Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Akbarpur branch in UP, ₹6.3 lakh to a Bank of Baroda a/c in Allahabad and ₹13.8 lakh to an ICICI Bank holder in Nadia, West Bengal. Mittal lodged a complaint with the Noida Cyber Crime Cell on June 14.

By obtaining a duplicate SIM, the fraudster managed to get the OTP sent to Mittal, whose SIM was inactive since June 8. On June 11, Mittal visited an Airtel store to complain about his inactive SIM, where he was informed that the SIM was actually active on a different phone.

The RBI entitles customers for zero liability where the deficiency lies neither with the bank nor with the customer but elsewhere in the system. The customer has to notify the bank within three working days of receiving communication regarding the unauthorised transaction. An IndusInd Bank spokesperson said, “It is practically impossible to fraudulently withdraw money from an online account unless the customer compromises personal details inadvertently or otherwise.” The spokesperson said that adding a beneficiary for funds transfer requires two factor authentication — the login ID & password and an OTP sent to the customer’s registered mobile number.

“In this case, the bank sent the OTP to the registered mobile number of the customer,” he said. He added that the bank is cooperating with the investigation.

In response to the duplicate SIM issue, an Airtel spokesperson said the company is assisting the police in their investigation. The spokesperson added that customers are advised not to share any sensitive or personal information with anyone.

According to Kotak group chief communication officer Rohit Rao, the bank acted promptly upon receiving an intimation from IndusInd Bank on June 14, requesting return of funds debited to Mittal’s account on June 12 and credited to the account of Larenj Kumar, an account holder of Kotak’s Akbarpur branch.

IAS officer shifted to prisoners’ cell in MCH

Thiruvananthapuram:05.08.2019

More than 24 hours after a magistrate remanded him in judicial custody, survey and land records director Sriram Venkitaraman, who is the accused in the drunken driving accident that led to the death of journalist K M Basheer, was shifted to the prisoners’ cell of the medical college hospital from a private hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment since the early hours of Saturday. It is learned that Sriram will move a bail application on Monday.

The move of police to discharge Sriram from the super deluxe pay ward of KIMS Hospital, Anayara, and present him before judicial first-class magistrate again on Sunday evening was following the strong protest by journalist fraternity, family of Basheer and opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala over the undue privileges granted to a remand prisoner by the state police. On Sunday morning, Kerala Union of Working Journalists warned off a protest march to the hospital if Sriram was not discharged by evening.

Earlier, Kerala Union of Working Journalists had protested against the “comfy stay” of the officer in the private hospital. The KUWJ officer bearers had threatened to stage a protest in front of the private hospital. The family of Basheer also demanded an impartial probe and expressed anguish over the special treatment meted out to Sriram. TNN

New Delhi:05.08.2019

Contending that airfares to Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata from their centres are ‘cheaper’ than AC1 and AC2 train fares, the Hubli, Karnataka headquartered South Western Railway has approved its officials’ request to fly to these destinations instead.

The general manager, South Western Railway has approved the proposal which states that it would “increase productivity”

as the travel time between any location in the railway zone to these tier 1cities is “more than 12 hours.”

Road mishap: HC hikes relief by₹43 lakh

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai:05.08.2019

The Madras high court has enhanced the compensation awarded to the family of an accident victim from ₹9.5 lakh to ₹52.6 lakh, holding that the tribunal had erroneously calculated the monthly income of the victim, who was working as a junior engineer in an agricultural institution.

Victim Palanivelu’s family had moved the high court against the Karaikal Motor Accident Claims Tribunal’s award. The accident happened on March 7, 2015, at Karaikal. Palanivelu, a pedestrian, was knocked down by a rashly driven motorcycle. During the pendency of the claim petition, the rider of the vehicle too died after which the owner was made the respondent. A division bench of justices N Kirubakaran and Abdul Quddhose perused the submissions made and pointed out that though the tribunal considered the salary slip of the deceased, which had shown the monthly income as ₹41,500, it took only ₹6,000 as monthly income and set aside the consideration.

After computing factors based on the actual salary, the bench held the family is eligible for a compensation of ₹52.6 lakh, out of which the victim’s wife is entitled to ₹21 lakh and the minor son and daughter to ₹15.5 lakh each.

The insurance firm has been directed to disburse the modified amount to the victim’s family.
HC dismisses plea of MBBS aspirant with 85% disability

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Madurai:05.08.2019

The Madras high court has dismissed the plea of a medical aspirant with 85% disability citing MCI regulations which state that people with more than 80% disability are not eligible for medical admission and that disability certificate issued by the competent authority mentioned in the prospectus can only be considered for admission.

The petitioner R Sakeela, who cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Neet), had applied for MBBS admission for the year 2019-20 under the disability quota. Her application was rejected as she suffered 85% locomotor disability. Following this, she moved the court.

Counsel for the petitioner stated that the district medical board had issued a disability certificate to her mentioning 70% locomotor disability on May 21.

However, the medical board of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, which issued a certificate on June 17, stated that Sakeela suffered 85% locomotor disability.

Her counsel contended that the disability certificate of the medical board of the hospital cannot prevail over the certificate issued by the district medical board.

Additional advocate general (AAG) K Chellapandian submitted that as per the prospectus for admission of students in the MBBS course, candidates who seek admission under the disability quota have to obtain certificate from the medical board of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Chellapandian also produced an amendment made by the Medical Council of India in the regulations for medical admission.

Justice R Suresh Kumar observed that as per the clause mentioned in the prospectus, the candidates are required to produce the certificate obtained from the medical board of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for the purpose of assessing the nature and extent of disability.

The judge dismissed the plea of Sakeela stating that the petitioner is not eligible to get medical admission in view of her 85% disability certified by the medical authority.

Though the district medical board issued a disability certificate to Sakeela mentioning 70% locomotor disability, the medical board of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, in its certificate, said she suffered 85% locomotor disability
Educationists slam move to conduct screening test for NEET coaching
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai:05.08.2019

The move to conduct a screening test for students from government and government-aided schools to provide NEET coaching has received flak from educationists and teachers who said it would deny opportunities to poor children to prepare for NEET.

After drawing a blank in medical admissions, the school education department has proposed to conduct a screening test on August 7 to select students for NEET and JEE coaching. It also insisted on conducting weekly tests on Fridays to prepare the children for the exam.

V Vasanthidevi, senior educationist and former vicechancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University said the government should oppose an unfair exam like NEET instead of coaching the children for it. “The fact that not a single student was able to get a medical seat tells that the government can never compete with NEET coaching centres. The students who spend one or two years and lakhs of rupees on coaching were able to get the medical seat. There is a big coaching centre empire in the making,” she said.

All the students who wish to prepare for NEET coaching should be given an opportunity, said P B Prince Gajendrababu, general secretary, state platform for common school system. “Though we are opposing the common medical test, we should stop students who want to take it. By conducting this new test, the department is shifting the blame on poor children for failure to send a single student for medical colleges,” he said, adding that the proposed screening test will act as another filter while NEET itself is a filtering exam.

Some teachers said this exam can have negative impact on the morale of the students. “The announcement that screening test would be conducted on August 7 for government school students for enrolling into NEET coaching has shocked parents. It is saddening to see that the government is trying to filter students. It should provide coaching to all students interested to appear for NEET and JEE,” said P K Ilamaran, president, Tamil Nadu Teachers Association.

He also urged the school education department to reconsider conducting the screening test for NEET coaching for government school students. Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary Schools Headmasters’ Association president A Peter Raja said the move will further put stress on government school students. “Instead, the school education department can select the students based on their Class X marks for coaching,” he said.
