Nurses’ exam paper circulated on net; Nimhans rules out leak

About 16,000 nurses took the all-India exam for 90 posts at Nimhans on Sunday. The test was conducted at 450 centres across the country. However, everything was not smooth as a few questions were doing rounds in social media even before the candidates exited from the exam hall.

Nimhans director Dr B N Gangadhar said a few miscreants had barged into a centre at Jaipur in Rajasthan, clicked the photograph of the question paper and circulated it. “A committee has been set up to look into the matter. We need to do something about it. This is not paper leak and no candidate had access to questions prior to the exam,” he added. Over 450 aspirants appeared for the test at Jaipur centre. While some students want a re-exam, others say they should not be burdened as questions were not leaked before the test. Nimhans has ruled the chances of conducting a retest. “Security seemed to have been compromised at multiple levels. Biometric registration is a must while entering the exam hall, which should further be crosschecked when a candidate is selected for interview, post the written test. No electronic gadget can be allowed inside the centre. However, all such rules have been violated at Jaipur centre,” a candidate alleged.

In June, 2018, 16 candidates with same surname from a single community from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh were recruited.

HC notice to Centre, state over MBBS prospectus

The Madras high court has ordered notice to the central and state governments on a plea challenging some clauses mentioned in the prospectus issued by the state government for admission in MBBS/BDS course.

Petitioner Deekshita R, a resident of Madurai, prayed to the HC Madurai bench that clauses 5b to 5f concerning nativity of candidates, clause 10 (i) on second phase of counselling and clause 13 regarding all India surrendered seats be declared unconstitutional. Thereafter, she demanded, separate counselling must be conducted for the transferred non-reporting and non-joining vacant seats in MBBS/BDS under 15% all India quota with students who applied under the same quota.

When the petition was heard on Monday, Justice R Suresh Kumar ordered notice to the central and state governments and adjourned the case to a further date for hearing.

Tortured in Kuwait, Tamil Nadu women return

Four women from Tamil Nadu have fled Kuwait and returned to the state. They were hired as domestic workers in three different Arab households. What followed was physical abuse, torture and solitary confinement.

M Amudha and G Rajeshwari returned five days ago, while Vasantha Mani and Muthulakshmi came on Sunday. Muthulakshmi was too weak and was rushed to hospital from the airport.

“I was kept in a small room lacking ventilation and without food for two days, only because I asked for two hours of rest,” said Amudha. The 29-year-old was forced to take up the job after her husband was left paralysed.

The four women landed jobs through the same agent near Tiruvannamalai. Though they left for Kuwait at different periods, they all met at the office of their agent’s friend when they left their employers’ homes. But they were abused and forced to return. “The agent locked us in a room. We didn’t know each other, but had similar experiences,” said Vasantha. “I had to sell my jewellery to return home.”

Vasantha was the first to head to Kuwait after she was promised ₹40,000 a month. But since she landed, she had to work for more than one family. “I had to work at my employer’s mother’s house, his sisters’ and his friends’. I would start work at 6 am and continue till 2 am. If his wife saw me resting even for a minute, she would slap me,” she said.

Rajeshwari recalled an instance where she was not allowed to sit after working 12 hours. “I went to the toilet and sat for a while but slept for 10 minutes.”

When the three decided to leave, it wasn’t easy. “I was told by my employer that my agent had sold me for ₹7 lakh and he wouldn’t let me go,” said Amudha. “But I threatened to commit suicide and fled.”

Josephine Valarmathi, president of the National Domestic Workers Movement, said there were seven more women in Kuwait and they needed help. “We need the urgent intervention of state authorities. They should take strict action against unregistered agents who land women in such a situation,” she said.

Sumathi Vasudev, protector of emigrants, said not only unregistered companies, but even individuals and groups were involved in unauthorized recruitment. “Cases of unscrupulous agents are brought to our attention by the job racket team of the TN police,” she said. There are currently 108 registered agents across the state. “They provide pre-departure orientation for all migrants travelling not only to the Gulf but to any of the 18 ECR countries,” she added.

SRM launches Centre for Child Rights

SRM Institute of Science and Technology in partnership with the Dr Kailash Satyarthi Foundation launched their own Centre of Child Rights at their Kattankulathur campus on Monday.

Nobel laureate and child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi presided over the event and delivered the keynote address. “You my young friends can be the drivers of change. Change is not outside, it is inside you. You are the change,” he said urging students to play a larger global role voicing against child labour.

“You can challenge companies using child labour in their supply chain. You can be a good volunteer, write small blogs and use social media skills for betterment of humanity,” he said.

He also spoke about the increasing cases of assault and abuse prevalent against children in our country and the need to combat it. “In the next one hour, eight children will go missing and six children would get raped. In the land of Saraswati, Durga and Lakshmi, our girls are not safe and our boys too are not safe. You have the ability to change this, the ability to protect them. Each one of you must do your bit for society and the country.”

Now, catch a cab ride for ₹10 from metro stations

Now finding a cab to reach your destination from the nearest metro station is only a click away.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Monday launched feeder service cabs where commuters could book them from their location and reserve a seat before boarding. At the end of their trip, they can swipe the metro smartcard to make cashless payment. State industries minister M C Sampath, who launched the services, also inaugurated charging stations for electric vehicles at Nandanam metro station. “CMRL has many firsts to its credit when it comes to commuter services and metros in other cities have been following us. With this feeder service, we want to provide easy and affordable service,” said Sampath.

The feeder service launched in collaboration with Bengaluru Megacabs Private Limited has been linked to an app developed by Ford Mobility. The app, now integrated with CMRL’s mobile app, will operate like those used by cab aggregators. The app is designed with a minimum of five pickup points for every station. Commuters can choose the nearest pickup and the app will provide distance to the point and the arrival time of the nearest cab. Passengers can reserve a seat of their choice and either pay before taking the trip or swipe their card at the end of the trip. The service will cover a distance of six to eight kilometres from every station and will be available for a flat rate of ₹10.

CMRL managing director Pankaj Kumar Bansal said every station will have at least two cabs and the service will be extended to all stations in the next three months.

The electric vehicle charging station, launched in collaboration with Energy Efficiency Services Limited, a government of India enterprise, will be extended to 26 stations. Each station will have two ports that can be used for two, three and four-wheelers for a fee of ₹10.
