In an absorbing contest that saw a dramatic change of fortunes even as counting of votes was on, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday bagged the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, polling for which was deferred in April, taking its tally in the Lok Sabha to 24.

The party’s nominee, D.M. Kathir Anand, who is the son of former Minister and DMK treasurer Durai Murugan, defeated his nearest rival and the AIADMK candidate, A.C. Shanmugam, by a slender margin of 8,141 votes.

Trains, flights to Kerala hit due to heavy rain, flood

Train services from Chennai and other parts of the state to Kerala were disrupted due to heavy rain and flooding in Palghat area on Friday. More than 54 trains were cancelled as tracks were flooded, and landslides on tracks. Flights to Kochi too have been cancelled as the airport is closed till Sunday.

Flooding affected Palakkad — Ottappalam, Shoranur — Kuttipuram and Ferok — Kallayi sections of Palghat Division since 12.45pm on Friday. Landslip has also been reported at Karakkad, near Shoranur. In view of this, train traffic was affected in Palakkad — Ernakulam, Palakkad — Shoranur and Shoranur — Kozhikode sections.

Through the day, Southern Railway’s zonal headquarters announced the cancellation of around 54 trains to and from Kerala at the time of going to press. These included trains from the Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai divisions as well.

Huge crowd was seen at Dr MGR Chennai Central station through the evening as the weekend crowd were inquiring at helpdesk and counters to cancel their tickets. Trains have also been diverted through Tirunelveli.

Senior officials said the punctuality of the division was down from 80 to around

65. This was due to the double impact of cancellations due to floods in Maharashtra, Karnataka and now Kerala.

In a statement, Southern Railway said passengers could file for refunds till September 15. “Since passengers are moving out to safer places, they are not in a position to retrieve their tickets and bring them to the station for cancellation and for obtaining TDR (ticket deposit receipt). Railways has therefore decided to permit issue of TDRs at any station till September 15 (as against the normal rule of within three days from the booked date of journey),” the statement said. The public can apply to the railways for refund after obtaining the TDR from stations.

Similarly, passengers, who have booked e-tickets are also permitted to submit claims for refunds addressed to the chief commercial manager/passenger marketing, Southern Railway, Moore Market Complex, Chennai-600003 till September 15.

Helpdesk numbers 9188292595, 9188293595 and 1072 are functional round the clock at the Thiruvananthapuram divisional headquarters to provide information to passengers regarding changes in train services in that division.

Lack of signal outside Guindy stn spells trouble for commuters

Everyday, thousands of local train passengers who get down at Guindy station use the rear entrance to reach the bus stand on Race Course Road (RCR).

But, there is neither a traffic signal, a zebra crossing nor a pedestrian bridge at the junction to help them cross the busy road. They have to negotiate speeding vehicles and this has led to several minor accidents there. The 4-km Race Course Road, connecting Anna Salai with the Five Furlong Road junction is used by 12,000 to 15,000 vehicles a day, shows official data.

While buses drop commuters right in front of the railway station’s rear entrance in the morning, they have a tough time in the evenings. Road users are at the mercy of motorists before they can get a MTC bus or a share auto back home.

Though a traffic police personnel are deployed here, some vehicles tend to move impatiently not following signals from police.

“Making things worse are regular autos and share autorickshaws which are parked all along the road. Though we chase them off, other vehicles form a queue within the next 10 minutes,” said a traffic constable requesting anonymity.

Fake lawyer cheats govt official of ₹13L, arrested

Police arrested a fake lawyer for cheating a retired government official of ₹13 lakh on Thursday.

Police said Jayapaul, 72, hired Yesupatham, 40, a resident of Chengalpet, to whom he was introduced through a common friend, to file a case against an engineer before the consumer court. Jayapaul had assigned an engineer to construct a building. Though, he spent more than ₹3 crore, he believed the engineer had cheated him by not completing all the work assigned to him as per the original deal.

Jayapaul gave at least ₹13 lakh to Yesupatham in instalments to pursue the case against the engineer. As he found there was no progress beyond preparing the draft and filing before the court, Jayapaul demanded that Yesupatham return the money he had paid. As he refused to return the cash, Jayapaul approached the Chengalpet taluk police station and lodged a complaint.

During questioning, police found Yesupatham had discontinued his LLB studies at Shri Venkateshwara University in Andhra Pradesh 15 years ago. However, without disclosing this fact, Yesupatham had been practising as a lawyer.

Health authorities sound diphtheria alert in Chennai

The directorate of public health has asked doctors in the city to prescribe children coming with sore throat and fever with erythromycin, an antibiotic that is used to treat diphtheria. The recommendation came after the Institute of Child Health (ICH) told authorities that two children in Chennai showed symptoms of the bacterial disease.

Although sore throat is commonly seen in tonsillitis and laryngitis, the health department has insisted that doctors should not rule out diphtheria. “We don’t have the results for these cases yet, but we have decided to be cautious. We have assumed that they have diphtheria because we have seen an outbreak in the neighbouring states and in some districts of Tamil Nadu,” said director of public health Dr K Kolandaisamy.

On Thursday and Friday, the ICH reported that two children -- aged seven and 13 from Pammal and Seven Wells -- showed symptoms of the disease. About 50 urban and village health nurses were sent to schools and balwadis in the area for mass vaccination of children. By the end of the day, more than 4,000 children were vaccinated. In some primary health centres (PHC), regular vaccination camps conducted on Wednesdays and Fridays were postponed.

The government has asked doctors’ association to inform paediatricians, ENT specialists, MBBS doctors to notify the health department if they come across swollen glands, fever nasal discharge and malaise besides grey membrane covering the throat.

Resurgence of diphtheria, doctors said, was largely because of two reasons. Analysis of the state statistics showed some school students skipped booster DPT doses at the age of five. Studies have shown that the effect of diphtheria vaccines and booster fade away by the time children turn seven. “ Data shows that overall case-fatality rate for diphtheria is 5% to 10%. In children,death ratescan goup to 20%,” said Dr Balasubramanian S, medical director of Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital. However, introducing vaccines in children and pregnant women reduces incidence.

மனசு போல வாழ்க்கை 02: ஒப்பிடுதல் ஒரு வன்முறை 




உளவியல் படிப்பில் சேர்ந்தபோது எங்களுக்குக் கற்றுக்கொடுக்கப்பட்ட பாலபாடம் ஒன்று உண்டு. தனிநபர் வேறுபாடுகளைக் கற்பது உளவியலில் அடிப்படை நோக்கங்களில் ஒன்று என்று. இதை Individual Differences என்பார்கள். ஒருவரைப் போல மற்றொருவர் இல்லை என்பதுதான் இந்தக் கூற்று.

இரட்டைப் பிறவிகள்கூட இதற்கு விதிவிலக்கல்ல. இதைத் தெரிந்தகொள்ள உளவியல் படிக்க வேண்டியதில்லை. “அஞ்சு விரலும் ஒரே மாதிரியாவா இருக்கு?” என்பது நம் சொல் வழக்கில் உள்ளதே!
ஆனால், மனம் சலனப்படுகையில் முதலில் மறந்துவிடும் விஷயமும் இதுதான். எல்லாவற்றையும் சமன்படுத்தித் தட்டையாகப் பார்ப்பது மனத்துக்கு சவுகரியமான காரியம். “உன் வயசுதானே அவனுக்கு, அவனால முடியுது உன்னால முடியுதா?” என்று சுலபமாய்க் கேட்க வைக்கும்.

ஒப்பிடுதல் வன்முறை. அது சுய நிராகரிப்புக்குத்தான் வழிவகுக்கும். ஆனால், அதிகாரம் கையில் வந்தவுடன் இந்த ஒப்பிடுதல் அருமையான நிர்வாக ஆயுதமாக மாறிவிடுகிறது.

நிலைகுலையச் செய்த கேள்வி

இது பற்றி ஒரு பள்ளியில் பேசியபோது ஆசிரியர் ஒருவர் சந்தேகம் எழுப்பினார்: “மாணவர்களை ஊக்குவிக்க ஒப்பிடுதல் உதவாதா, பிறரைப் போல நாம் ஆக வேண்டும் என்று தோன்றவைக்காதா?” என்றார்.
“உங்க மாணவர் உங்களிடம் கேட்கிறார்: ‘அவரும் உங்களை மாதிரி எம்.ஃபில்தானே படித்திருக்கிறார். அவர் மட்டும் எம்.என்.சி.யில ஒரு லட்ச ரூபாய் சம்பளத்தில் இருக்கும்போது நீங்க மட்டும் ஏன் ஸ்கூல் மாஸ்டராய் இன்னமும் இருபதாயிரம் சம்பளம் வாங்குகிறீர்கள்?’ இதை நீங்கள் ஊக்குவிப்பாய் எடுத்துக்கொள்ள முடியுமா?” என்று கேட்டேன்.

அவர் முகம் கோபத்தில் சிவந்தது. வெகு நேரம் கழித்து அவரே தனியாக வந்து பேசினார். “கூட்டத்தில் எல்லோர் முன்னிலையிலும் அப்படி நீங்கள் கேட்டது என்னை நிலைகுலையச் செய்தது” நான் அமைதியாகச் சொன்னேன். “நீங்களும் மாணவர்களைக் கூட்டத்தில் வைத்துத்தானே ஒப்பிடுகிறீர்கள்!”. இம்முறை பொருள் விளங்கியவாறு மவுனமாக விலகிச் சென்றார் ஆசிரியர்.


நல்ல நோக்கத்துடன்தான், நாம் பல தீய செயல்களைச் செய்கிறோம். யோசித்துப் பாருங்களேன், நாம் யாரை அதிகம் காயப்படுத்துகிறோம் நம் மீது பெரிதும் அன்பு செலுத்துபவர்களைத்தானே!

ஆக்கிரமித்தல் ஆகாது

தனிநபர் வேறுபாட்டை ஏன் மறக்கிறோம்? உணர்வு மேலிடும்போது அறிவு மங்கிவிடுகிறது. காதல் உணர்வு மேலிடும்போது “நான் பேச நினைப்பதெல்லாம் நீ பேச வேண்டும்” என்று பாட வைக்கிறது.

அற்புதமான கவி உணர்வுதான். ஆனால், தான் நினைப்பதையே தன் காதலி பேச வேண்டும் என்று எண்ணுவது எவ்வளவு பெரிய ஆக்கிரமிப்பு உணர்வு. இந்த எதிர்பார்ப்பின் பாரம் தாங்காமல் எத்தனை உறவுகள் நொறுங்கிப் போகின்றன?

“என் அம்மாபோல எனக்கு மனைவி வேண்டும்”, “சின்ன வயசில எனக்கு நடனம் கத்துக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை. நீயாவது கத்துக்கோ” - இப்படி அடுக்கிக்கொண்டே போகலாம்.

தோற்றத்தால், அறிவால், குணத்தால், மன அமைப்பால் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் வேறுபட்டுள்ளோம். வாழ்க்கை முறைகளும் வாழ்க்கை அனுபவங்களும் இன்னமும் நம் பன்முகத்தன்மையை விரிவடையச் செய்து விடுகிறது. ஆனால், இந்த வேறுபாடுகளை மறந்து ஒப்பீடு செய்வதும், கட்டுப்படுத்த நினைப்பதும், உறவின் பல ஆதாரச் சிக்கல்களுக்குக் காரணமாகின்றன.

உங்கள் மூலமாக வந்ததால் மட்டும் உங்கள் குழந்தைகள் உங்கள் சொத்துகள் ஆகிவிட மாட்டார்கள் என்றார் கலீல் கிப்ரான். ஆக்கிரமிப்பு உணர்வு இல்லாமல் காதல் சாத்தியம் என்று எழுதியவர் ஜெயகாந்தன்.

எல்லாச் சேதாரங்களுக்குமான விதை ஒரு தவறான எதிர்பார்ப்பு. “நான் வேறு. நீ வேறு. அது உன் கருத்து. இது என் கருத்து. நாம் வேறுபடுதலில் தவறில்லை” என்று சற்று அறிவுபூர்வமாக யோசிக்க ஆரம்பித்தால் பல உணர்வுப் போராட்டங்களில் இருந்து விடுதலை பெற முடியும்.

வாழ்க்கையின் எல்லாத் துயரங்களுக்கும் காரணம் நம் மனம் என்றால், அதைச் சரிசெய்ய நமக்கு உள்ள ஒரே ஆயுதமும் மனம் மட்டுமே!
