CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday said self-financing medical colleges should not collect any fee from medical students during the internship period, and action will be taken if any complaint is received from an aggrieved student.

Subramanian said this while replying to a discussion on a calling attention motion raised by leader of the opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, AIADMK MLA C Vijaya Baskar, VCK MLA SS Balaji, Tamilaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi MLA T Velmurugan and others.

Referring to the allegations levelled by Vijaya Baskar, Balaji and Velmurugan about the collection of excessive fees for medical courses, including internship fee by self-financing colleges, Subramanian said the fee fixation committee can take action only when complaints from individuals are received.

He also recalled how Chief Minister MK Stalin, when he was leader of the opposition, led agitations protesting the governor’s delay in approving the 7.5% government quota for undergraduate medical courses. When Subramanian said the AIADMK government issued a G.O. for 7.5% quota only after the DMK’s agitations, the AIADMK members objected to it.

Deputy leader of the opposition RB Udhayakumar said Palaniswami was the only CM in the country who issued the G.O. using Article 162 (co-existence of legislative powers) for a 7.5% government quota. Countering it, Subramanian said since the DMK staged a massive demonstration against the governor’s delay in giving assent to the bill providing for a 7.5% quota, the AIADMK government issued the G.O. to pacify students who were agitated due to NEET irregularities.

Synopsis Marly Garnreiter, a 27-year-old woman, experienced unusual symptoms and consulted ChatGPT for insight after her father's death from colon cancer. The AI tool suggested she might have blood cancer, which she initially dismissed. However, after her health deteriorated, she sought medical advice and was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, emphasizing the importance of listening to one's body.

Marly Garnreiter, who lives in Paris, began experiencing unusual symptoms such as persistent night sweats and constant itching in early 2024. In today’s world, ChatGPT has become a go-to tool for many. From offering advice and helping with complex calculations to assisting with schoolwork, this AI-powered platform has revolutionized how people approach everyday tasks, making them quicker and easier. In a remarkable case, a 27-year-old woman shared that ChatGPT identified the possibility of her having cancer—before any medical expert could confirm it.

Marly Garnreiter, who lives in Paris, began experiencing unusual symptoms such as persistent night sweats and constant itching in early 2024. This started not long after she lost her father to colon cancer. Although her lab results showed nothing concerning, Marly assumed the symptoms were linked to grief and stress. Still uncertain, she decided to ask ChatGPT for insight.

To her astonishment, the AI tool suggested she might be suffering from a type of blood cancer.

"It told me I could have blood cancer. My friends didn’t believe it and insisted I should only trust medical professionals," she told the Daily Mail.

At first, Marly dismissed the idea, thinking the suggestion was far-fetched. However, her health gradually deteriorated. As she began experiencing sharp chest pains and overwhelming fatigue, she finally sought professional medical advice. After further examinations, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma—a form of cancer that begins in white blood cells and affects the lymphatic system.

“It felt incredibly unjust. I couldn’t bear the thought of putting my loved ones through another battle with cancer,” Marly shared emotionally. She also emphasized how crucial it is to pay attention to signs from our own bodies. “We need to be more in tune with our health and not ignore what it’s telling us,” she added.

Marly is now receiving treatment for her condition and remains hopeful.

What Is Hodgkin Lymphoma? Hodgkin lymphoma—also known as Hodgkin’s disease—is a cancer that impacts the lymphatic system, which plays a central role in the body's immune defenses. This illness begins in the lymph nodes but can spread to other parts of the body over time.

Fortunately, Hodgkin lymphoma is often very treatable, especially when identified early. Treatment approaches may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or even targeted drug therapy, depending on the case.

VC meet sparks faceoff between Tamil Nadu governor & govt

UDHAGAMANDALAM: The faceoff between Tamil Nadu governor R N Ravi and the state govt took a new turn with the former alleging that vice-chancellors of state universities were 'warned' by the govt not to participate in the two-day conference of VCs convened by Raj Bhavan on Friday. The DMK govt hit back at Ravi saying the VCs skipped the conference as it was 'illegal'.

While the VCs of state-run universities were absent, VCs from central universities and deemed-to-be universities participated. "Unfortunately, none of the vice-chancellors of state universities are participating. They have informed me that they have been warned by the state govt," the governor said at the conference, which was inaugurated by VP Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Guv organised conference 'adamantly in violation of law': TN higher edu mantri

Accusing govt of threatening some VCs, Tamil Nadu governor R N Ravi said: "A VC had reached Ooty and something unprecedented happened. There was a midnight knock and a special branch police (officer) was there and he told him that if he (the VC) participated in the conference, he would not be able to go home and meet his family."
Referring to Salem Periyar University VC R Jagannathan, who was summoned on Friday by Suramangalam police for an inquiry pertaining to allegations that he floated a private firm and used university premises to run it, Ravi said: "Another VC is at the police station at the moment."

Ravi said there is no politics involved in organising the conference, claiming that it has been showing results. "But perhaps for people in govt, it is not a comfortable situation."

Hitting back at the governor, TN higher education minister Govi Chezhian said Ravi convened the conference in a deliberate attempt to pick a fight with the state govt since SC gave a ruling in govt's favour empowering it to appoint VCs.

Chezhian said the governor organised the conference "adamantly in violation of the law" even after SC verdict. "The VCs were aware that the conference was illegal and have skipped it. How is the state govt responsible for their absence?"

Chezhian took a dig at the Vice-President as well. "Participation of Dhankhar in the conference is not surprising. The whole country saw his aggressive activities against Mamta Banerjee govt when he was West Bengal governor."

DMK MP P Wilson posted on X: "I condemn these false and irresponsible statements made by the Governor, who is proving to be incorrigible. How can a Governor make such baseless allegations against his own govt?"

CHENNAI: In a remarkable feat, two candidates from Tamil Nadu, P Kamaraj (29) and S Sankar Pandiyaraj (30), have cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2024, by writing it in Tamil, securing 614th and 807th ranks, respectively.

Of the six candidates who attempted mains in Tamil, only these two aspirants, who studied in Tamil medium schools, cleared the exam. Notably, the number of candidates writing the exam in Tamil is fairly low, and no one had cleared it in Tamil last year.

Sankar Pandiyaraj, who hails from Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar, is the son of tailors currently settled in Madurai. “I was inspired to become an IAS officer after meeting Sagayam IAS in Madurai. Studying in Tamil medium, I wanted to write the exam in the language I was most comfortable with. However, clearing the exam without knowing English is nearly impossible, he said, recalling his initial struggles.

Unable to afford regular college, Sankar completed BBA through distance education while doing part-time jobs. During his stay in Chennai, he often ate at Amma Unavagams, and also benefited from the Naan Mudhalvan scheme, receiving Rs 7,500/month. The amount was hiked to Rs 25,000 after clearing prelims. “Without this support, I wouldn’t have been able to clear the exam. I also received help from an NGO for which I was volunteering with in Cheyyar,” he added.

Highlighting the growing accessibility of resources for Tamil medium aspirants, P Kamaraj from Rajapalayam said, “There are now AI tools that can translate study materials. The TN government is also helping by translating vital articles from English newspapers into Tamil,” he said.

T Sankara Saravanan, joint director at TN Textbook and Educational Services Corporation, who mentors UPSC aspirants, noted that candidates opting for Tamil must be proficient in both Tamil and English.

“The question papers are still available only in English and Hindi for prelims and mains. While study materials for subjects like history is available in Tamil, it’s difficult to find it for current affairs. The Kalaignar Centenary Library helps to bridge this gap by translating important English news articles,” said Saravanan, who also mentored Kamaraj.

Retired IAS officer R Balakrishnan, who was among the first batch to clear the exam in Tamil, said it was heartening to see more students clearing UPSC in Tamil.
