Why airlines are cracking down on power banks — Emirates’ latest move explained

Why airlines are cracking down on power banks — Emirates’ latest move explained

Emirates Power Bank Ban October 2025, Airline Flight Rules Update: Starting October 1, 2025, Emirates passengers will not be allowed to use power banks during flights. Written by Shubham Chhabra October 1, 2025 20:33 IST Follow Us

Emirates Power Bank Ban 2025: New rules for flyers from October 1.

Travellers on Emirates flights will no longer be allowed to use power banks in the cabin starting October 1, 2025. Under the new policy, passengers may carry one power bank up to 100 watt-hours in their hand luggage, but it must remain switched off throughout the flight. Charging devices using power banks or the aircraft’s in-seat outlets is strictly prohibited.

Behind the Ban Emirates stated the decision followed a safety review. “The use of power banks has grown significantly in recent years, leading to more battery-related incidents in aviation. This measure aims to reduce such risks,” the airline said.

The airline highlighted that growing reliance on power banks has contributed to a rise in lithium battery-related incidents in aviation. By restricting their use, Emirates aims to reduce risks linked to overheating or malfunctioning batteries.

Safety Concerns Prompt New Rule Emirates said the restriction comes after a safety review. “The use of power banks has grown significantly in recent years, leading to more battery-related incidents in aviation. This measure aims to reduce such risks,” the airline explained.

The airline noted that frequent use of portable chargers has contributed to a rise in lithium battery-related hazards, such as overheating or malfunction. By banning in-flight usage, Emirates hopes to lower the risk of potential incidents.

Storage Guidelines for Passengers

Passengers must ensure that their power banks have clearly visible capacity labels and can only be stored under the seat or in the seat pocket ahead—not in overhead bins. Emirates also reminded travellers that aircraft are equipped with charging ports, so devices should be fully charged before boarding, especially on longer journeys.

Power banks, commonly used for smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and even laptops, typically contain lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which can be hazardous if damaged or misused.

Global Rules Back Up Restriction

Worldwide aviation authorities, including FAA, TSA, CAA, and IATA, already regulate power bank use. Generally, devices must be in hand luggage and not exceed 100Wh (about 27,000mAh). Some carriers allow power banks up to 160Wh with prior permission, but anything beyond that is prohibited. Emirates’ policy enforces stricter limits to maximize safety.

Travellers should check that their power banks are undamaged and for personal use only, and charge all devices before travel, as airport or in-seat outlets remain the only charging options.

WhatsApp adds cool new features as Arattai app hits record downloads in India:

WhatsApp adds cool new features as Arattai app hits record downloads in India:

 Details here 01.10.2025

WhatsApp has brought some new features to the app, including more AI additions at a time when homegrown Arattai messaging app is gaining popularity in India.

India Today Tech New Delhi,UPDATED: Sep 30, 2025 12:25 IST

WhatsApp has introduced several cool new features at a time when Arattai is gaining popularity in India. Users on the Meta-owned platform will now be able to use AI to express their creativity even in chats.

According to WhatsApp, users can create chat themes with Meta AI. Chat themes were introduced earlier this year as a way to customise the look of the app on your phone or use special themes for specific chats. Now users can simply give a prompt and get the chat theme of their choice with Meta AI.

Additionally, you can create AI backgrounds for video calls on WhatsApp, a fun way to interact with your friends and family. WhatsApp claims that you can even add backgrounds while taking photos or videos directly in a chat.

Moreover, users can now share live photos via WhatsApp. It's been years since Apple first introduced live photos with the iPhone 6s in 2015. Several Android makers have introduced their own versions of the year. Live photos or motion photos capture a short video sequence while taking an image.

Other updates include support for document scanning on Android, a feature that was already available on iPhones. All WhatsApp users can now search for group chats by writing the name of any contact who is part of that group.

Can Arattai replace WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is the undisputed leader when it comes to messaging platforms. However, Arattai has emerged as a potential made-in-India alternative to the Meta-owned app. Arattai is a messaging platform built by homegrown tech firm Zoho.

Arattai has soared in popularity in the past couple of days, even reaching number 1 on the Apple App Store. The app was also endorsed by government officials, including Union Education Minister Dharmendra Prasad.

Arattai has some unique features compared to WhatsApp. Users get a dedicated meeting section akin to Google Meet. This allows for organised meetings and calls through Arattai.

Moreover, Arattai also brings a ‘Till I reach’ feature for location sharing. The live location automatically stops when the user has reached the set destination, making it more convenient.

Arattai does have the potential to make it big in India. But there is still a long way to go before it can even come close to replacing WhatsApp. Messages on Arattai are not end-to-end encrypted, a major concern for individuals who want to keep their data private. Though Zoho has asserted that they will bring end-to-end encryption to the app soon.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has refused to order a private law college to readmit a student who was dismissed after being arrested in a drug case. However, the court quashed the termination order, as it was passed without issuing notice to the student before taking the decision to dismiss him, and directed the college to initiate fresh proceedings.

The orders were passed recently on a petition filed by P Pradeep, a third year LLB student of the Central Law College, Salem. He was arrested in a criminal case registered under NDPS Act, 1985, on September 10, 2024, and was released on bail on October 14, 2024.

The college administration passed an order on December 2, 2024, dismissing him from the college and sent his transfer certificate and other original certificates to him.

Pradeep filed a plea against the dismissal and contended that he was not issued notice before deciding to dismiss him; and this amounted to violation of principles of natural justice. He prayed for the court to quash the order and direct the college to readmit him.

Justice Kumarappan observed that the principles of natural justice were not followed and so quashed the impugned order. He directed the college to pass a fresh order after following due procedures in four weeks. Until final decision is taken, the petitioner is not entitled to enter the college except for inquiry, the order said.
