ஒரு பொருளின் மெய்யான மதிப்பு எப்போது முழுமையாகத் தெரியும்? "இப்படி ஒரு கேள்வியை இலக்கியப் பயிலரங்கு ஒன்றில் பங்கேற்பாளர்களிடம் கேட்டேன். விலையைப் பொருத்தது'என்றார் ஒரு மாணவர்.

விலை மதிப்பற்றது, விலை மதிக்க முடியாதது என்றெல்லாம் சொல்லுகிறோமே? அப்படியானால் என்ற பதில் கேள்வி கேட்டதும், பயன்படுத்துவதைப் பொருத்தது என்று ஒரு மாணவி கூறினார். அது எப்படி? தங்கத்தின் விலை மதிப்பு அதிகம். அதனோடு ஒப்பிட, தக்காளியின் விலை குறைவு. தக்காளி சாப்பாட்டுக்கு உதவும். தங்கத்தைச் சாப்பிட முடியுமா என்று பதில் கேள்வி கேட்டார் மாணவர். தங்கத்தை விற்றால், தக்காளிக் கடையையே வைக்கலாம் என்று பதிலளித்தார் மற்றொருவர். சின்னத் தக்காளியின் மிகச் சிறிய விதைகூட மண்ணில் விழுந்தால் மறுபடி பல நூறு தக்காளிகளைத் தரும்; முளைக்கும். அதுபோல், தங்கம் முளைக்குமா? இத்தனைக்கும் அதுவும் மண்ணில் இருந்துதான் கிடைக்கிறது என்று மறுத்தார் மாணவி.

தலைப்பு திசைமாறுகிறது, பட்டிமன்றத்தைப்போல். தங்கமா?, தக்காளியா என்று பட்டிமன்றமா இங்கே நடத்துகிறோம்? கேள்வி என்ன? எது விலை உயர்ந்தது என்பது இல்லை. ஒரு பொருளின் முழுமதிப்பு வெளிப்படுத்துவது எப்போது என்று மற்றொருவர் தெளிவுபடுத்தினார்.

"அது பயன்படுத்துபவரின் தகுதியை, தேவையைப் பொருத்தது என்ற பதிலும் வந்தது. பயன்படுத்தவே இல்லை என்றால், ஒரு பொருள் தன் தகுதியில் மதிப்பில் குறைந்துவிடுமா என்ன என்ற வினாவும் எழுந்தது. பயிற்சி பெறுபவர்களைக் குழுக்களாகப் பிரித்து நடத்திய வகுப்பு என்பதால், பதில் தருபவர் எவரோ, அவர்தம் குழுவில் இருந்து பலத்த கரவொலி எழும்பிவிடும். சுவையான செய்தியாக அமைந்துவிட்டால், அது குழு எல்லை கடந்து பலரது கரவொலிகளையும் பெற்றுவிடும்.

இந்தப் பதிலுக்கு அப்படி ஒரு பொதுக்கரவொலி எழுந்தது. இது பொது நிகழ்வு இல்லை; குழு உரையாடல். பொதுநிகழ்வில்போல், இதுபோன்ற குழு உரையாடலிலும் கரவொலி எழுப்பி அங்கீகரிப்பதும், பாராட்டுவதும்கூட மதிப்பைத் தருவதுதான். எவ்வளவு பேர் எவ்வளவு சப்தமாகக் கரவொலி எழுப்பினார்கள் என்பதைப் பொருத்து ஒரு கருத்தின் மதிப்பை அளவிட்டுவிட முடியாது. பலத்த கரவொலி பெறுகிற உரையைவிட, கைதட்ட மறந்து சிந்திக்க வைக்கிற உரைதான் உயர்ந்தது; பயனுள்ளது.

கை தட்டல் அரங்கத்தில் எழுப்பப்பட்ட மறுகணமே, அவ்வொலி காற்றில் கரைந்துபோகும். ஆனால், கவனத்துக்குக் கொண்டுவரப்பெற்ற செய்தி எழுப்புகிற சிந்தனை காலம் கடந்து இருக்கும். செயல் விளைவுகளை உண்டாக்கும் என்று விளக்கம் சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, ஒரு பொருளின் முழு மதிப்பு, காலத்தைப் பொருத்து அமையும் என்று சொல்லலாமா என்று ஒருவர் குறுக்கிட்டுக் கேட்டார். கரவொலி எழுப்பப் போன ஒரு சிலரும் செவி மடுத்த சிந்தனையால் நிறுத்திக் கொண்டனர்.

"எங்கே, ஜோரா ஒரு தடவை கை தட்டுங்க' என்று இரண்டு நிமிஷங்களுக்கு ஒருமுறை கரவொலியை இரவலாய்ப் பெற்றுப் பேசுகிற பேச்சாளரின் கவனமெல்லாம் கரவொலியின்மீது இருக்குமே ஒழியப் பேசுகிற கருத்தில் இருக்காது என்று அதற்கும் விளக்கம் சொன்னேன்.

"ஒரு பொருளின் மதிப்பு, அதற்குச் சமமானதாகவோ மாற்றாகவோ இருக்கும் மற்றொரு பொருளின் மதிப்போடு ஒப்பிடுகிறபோது முழு மதிப்புத் தெரியும் என்று சொல்லலாமா? ஏற்கெனவே சொன்ன தக்காளியை உதாரணமாக எடுத்துக் கொள்ளலாம்.

தராசில் எடை போடும்போது ஒரு கிலோ இரும்புப் படிக்கல்லுக்கு இணையாகத் தக்காளி இருந்தாலும் இரும்பின் விலை அதிகம். அதுவே, அதற்குச் சமமாகத் தங்கம் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தால், அது இரும்பைவிட விலை அதிகம். சந்தை மதிப்பிலும், சமூக மதிப்பிலும் உயர்ந்ததை வைத்து முடிவு செய்யலாமா' என்ற வினாவும் முன் வைக்கப்பட்டது.

"ஆக, ஒரு பொருளின் மதிப்பு, அதன் விலையில் இல்லை; பயன்பாட்டில் இல்லை; அது தொலைகிறபோதுதான் முழு மதிப்பும் நமக்குத் தெரிய வருகிறது' என்று சொன்னவுடன் அனைவரும் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு ஆரவாரமாய்க் கரவொலி எழுப்பினார்கள்.

கருத்தை அத்துடன் நிறுத்திக் கொள்ளாமல் விரித்துச் சொல்லவும் நேர்ந்தது. இருப்பதன் மதிப்பு, இல்லாமையில்தான் முழுமையாக வெளிப்படுகிறது. நிழலின் அருமை வெயிலில் தெரிவதுபோல்.

ஆரோக்கியத்தின் மதிப்பு, நோய் வயப்படுகிறபோது தெரிகிறது. உறுப்புகளின் சிறப்பு, இழப்புகளின்போது தெரிய வருகிறது. "கண் கெட்ட பிறகு சூரிய நமஸ்காரம்' என்ற பழமொழி, கவனத்தில் பதிந்தாலும், அனுபவத்தில் வருகிறபோதுதான் அதற்கும் மதிப்பு கூடுகிறது.

"யானை இருந்தாலும் ஆயிரம் பொன். இறந்தாலும் ஆயிரம் பொன்' என்ற பழமொழி, யானைக்குப் பொருந்திய அளவுக்கு மனிதர்களுக்குப் பொருந்துமா என்ற கேள்வி முன்னெல்லாம் எழுந்தது. கண் தானம் முதலான உறுப்பு தானங்கள் பயன்பாட்டுக்கு வந்தபிறகு, மனித உடலின் மதிப்பும் கூடியிருக்கிறது.

உணவுப் பொருளின் மதிப்பைவிட, உணர்வுப் பொருளின் மதிப்புக் கூடுவதுபோல் தெரிந்தாலும், பசி வந்தால் என்ன ஆகும்? "பணம் பத்தும் செய்யும்' என்ற பழமொழியும், "பசி வந்திடப் பத்தும் பறந்துபோம்' என்கிற ஒüவையார் பாடலடியும் ஒன்றுபோல் தெரியும். ஆனால், அவை ஒன்றாகாது. பணத்தை வைத்துக்கொண்டு அந்தப் பத்து எவையென ஆராய்ச்சி செய்யலாம்; நிரல்படுத்தலாம். ஆனால், பசியை வைத்துக்கொண்டு, பத்து எவையென்று பட்டியலிட முடியாது. கண்ணில்பட்ட பொருள்களில் பசி தீர்க்கும் பொருள் எதுவென்றுதான் தேடச் சொல்லும்.

இளம் குழந்தைக்கு, ஐநூறு ரூபாய்த் தாளைவிட, ஐஸ்க்ரீம்தான் மதிப்பில் உயர்ந்தது. பசித்தவனின் உணர்வுக்கு பண மதிப்பீட்டைவிடவும் உணவுத் தேவைதான் உயர்வுடையதாய்த் தெரியும். எத்தனை ஆயிரம் கொடுத்தாலும், இப்போது உண்ண எது கிடைக்கும் என்றே தேடச் சொல்லும். அந்த அனுபவத்தில், ஒரு புதிய உண்மை பிறக்கும். "பசி உயிர் போகுது.' பசி உடலின் தேவையா?, உயிரின் தேவையா?

உடலோடு உயிரைப் பிணைத்துவைக்கும் உணர்வு அது. அந்த நேரத்தில் கிடைக்கும் உணவுக்கு ஒரு விலை இருக்கும். அது பண மதிப்பீட்டில் எப்படி இருந்தாலும், மன மதிப்பீட்டில் எவ்வளவு உயர்ந்தது?

சரி, பசிக்கிறபோது புசிக்கக் கிடைக்காத உணவைக் கிடைக்கிறபோதெல்லாம் எடுத்து முழுதாக உண்டுவிட முடிகிறதா? ஒப்பீட்டு நிலையிலும்கூட நம் மதிப்பீடு சரியாக இருப்பதில்லை.

உயிரின் மதிப்பு உயர்ந்தது என்று எண்ணுவது இயற்கை. அதைவிட உடலின் மதிப்பு உயர்ந்தது என்பதை ஒப்புக்கொள்ள மனம் மறுக்கும். ஓர் உடலின் உறுப்புகளை, ஏனைய உடல்களுக்கு மாற்றிவைத்துப் பயன் கொள்வதுபோல், உயிரை வேறு உடலுக்குள் புகுத்துகிற மருத்துவச் செழுமை இன்னும் கைகூடி வரவில்லை. தங்கத்தினும் தாய் உயர்ந்தவர் என்பது தெரியும். ஆனால், நடைமுறையில்? பணத்திலும் உயர்ந்த மதிப்புடையது குணம் என்று தெரிகிறது. ஆனால், தேடலில் எது முதலிடம் வகிக்கிறது?

மதிப்பு என்பது, அந்தந்த நேரத்துக்கு ஏற்பக் கூடலாம்; குறையலாம். முழு மதிப்பு என்பது அதன் தன்மை முழுமையாக உணரப்படுகிறபோதுதான் தெரிய வரும். இப்போதும்கூட, அறியப்படுகிற மதிப்பீடுகள்தான் நம்மை ஆக்கிரமிக்கின்றன. உண்மையில், மதிப்பெனப்படுவது மதிப்பிடப்படுவதில் இல்லை. மதிப்புக்கு உரிய மதிப்பு வழங்கப்படாதபோதுதான் அபூர்வமாய் வெளிப்படுகிறது.

உடலும் உயிரும் இணைந்து பயன் கொள்ளும் காலத்தின் தேவைக்குப் பயன்படும் ஒரு பொருளின் முழு மதிப்பு என்பது, அந்தக் காலத்தோடு மட்டும் முடிந்துவிடாமல், கால காலத்துக்கும் பயன்படும்போதுதான் அதன் முழு மதிப்பும் தெரியவரும்; அத்தகைய மதிப்புக்கு உரிய மனிதராய் நம்மையும் மதிப்புக்கு உரிய நிலையில் நம் வாழ்வையும் அமைத்துக் கொள்வதில்தான் நம் மதிப்பு அடங்கியிருக்கிறது' என்று அப்போதைக்குச் சொல்லி நிறைவுபடுத்திக் கொண்டோம். இது குறித்த உங்களின் மதிப்பீடுதான் என்ன?

NEET SS 2025 likely to be conducted in November

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) will soon begin the application process for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Super Speciality (NEET SS) for the 2025 academic session on its official website.

Interested candidates will be able to submit their applications online. Only those who complete and submit the NEET SS 2025 application before the specified deadline will be allowed to take the exam. As of now, the NBEMS has not issued an official notification regarding the application process. However, based on the tentative NBEMS schedule, which indicates that NEET SS 2025 is likely to be held in November, it is anticipated that the registration process will begin shortly. The formal announcement is still awaited. According to the provisional timetable, the NEET SS 2025 exam is scheduled for November 7 and 8, 2025. The test will be held in two sessions each day: the morning session from 9 am to 11.30 am, and the afternoon session from 2 pm to 4.30 pm. Each session will last 150 minutes.

NEET SS is a computerbased PG entrance exam for super-speciality courses. It runs for two and a half hours and includes 15 different superspeciality subject groups. Applicants must choose their subject group during the registration process.

UGC draft Maths LOCF risks diluting academic rigour

Students pursuing a programme need to learn its core elements, but the preponderance of IKS, VAC, SEC may leave them exhausted

To transform undergraduate Mathematics education by integrating the classical traditions with modern courses, the UGC recently launched the draft Maths Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Aimed at offering a robust mathematical foundation emphasising value-based education, interdisciplinary relevance, and integration with the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), the draft has evoked strong opposition from the mathematics educators, as over 900 academics have demanded its withdrawal, saying it is regressive and risks students’ futures globally.

The Centre has constituted acommittee of experts to review the UGC draft curriculum for various subjects in the wake of allegations regarding factual inaccuracies and inclusion of outdated topics. Discussing what is perceived as grave defects in the draft Maths syllabus, Nandita Narain, associate professor (Retd), Department of Mathematics, St Stephen's College, University of Delhi (DU), says, “The proposed syllabus pushes higher Mathematics in India back by about 56 years. In 1969, modern pure Mathematics was introduced in UG syllabi for the first time and constituted roughly 65-75 % of the syllabus.

This was to equip students to compete at the international level, where modern abstract Algebra and Analysis were widely accepted as the two pillars on which all of higher mathematics stands. The overall Maths content in the course is severely diluted with only 14 core Maths papers out of a total of 36. This does not look like a syllabus forMathematics Hons. In fact, it is woefully inadequate even for the Mathematics in the BA/ BSc general course and will leave students handicapped at the international level. The preponderance of IKS, Valued added Courses (VAC), and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) will leave them exhausted, confused and ignorant about their core subject.” Mix and Match Pointing at the increasing confusion, Amber Habib, professor, Department of Mathematics, Shiv Nadar University, says, “This is a hodgepodge of all multiple things which lacks a vision. Interdisciplinary relevance and the use of historical context have a place in a Mathematics curriculum, provided they are used to enrich the mathematical experience and not replace it.”

The focus is on the IKS and its applications. Prof Habib adds, “Students would be led to believe that the contributions of ancient India can serve as a substitute for modern knowledge. Key areas such as Analysis and Algebra would be taught to them in a hurried manner. They would be illequipped for master’s and PhD in India or abroad.” Including IKS IKS occupies a staggering 12 out of 28 in Discipline Specific Electives (DSE) and 12 out of 14 in the VAC. “Even the remaining 16 DSE are mostly computer languages (4) or Applied Maths (10) with only two pure Maths courses that do not cover the essential missing content in Algebra and Analysis. Advanced abstract pure mathematics has almost disappeared from the syllabus,” Narain says. “Since IKS courses are non-mathematical, the content would not last for even 20 hours, let alone the intended 60. Often the content is just a list of items to be memorised, the last thing you want to see in a modern Maths course,” says Prof Habib.

Though the core component for Maths students is free of IKS, the electives have 12 portion of IKS. “This is an issue because the core component is basic (for eg, only one course each on modern Algebra and Real Analysis), which needs to be compensated by elective. The electives should provide an opportunity for a student to take up advanced courses in Maths, whether pure or applied. Instead, the focus is clearly on ancient Maths. If a Maths student wishing to move towards ML or AI needs options such as Advanced Linear Algebra, Functional Analysis and Convex Optimisation.

The extra year of a 4-year UG programme ought to provide such courses. Instead, one finds courses such as Sutra-based Arithmetic, Geometry in Shulvasutras and Bhartiya Innovations: World-wide Accepted,” Prof Habib says. He adds, “While it is heart-warming to see our ancestors’ love of numbers and patterns, and this can lead to a more positive attitude to Math, yet the appropriate place for this is school rather than university. A university student needs to learn advanced Maths and itsapplications.”

University of Western Australia launch Mumbai campus

The UGC has approved the University of Western Australia’s (UWA)application to establish campuses in Mumbai and Chennai. The campuses will offer undergraduate and master’s degree programmes in STEM, as well as in Business and Commerce.

A high-level delegation from the university is in India to engage with the government and state agencies and create an ecosystem of partnerships with Indian institutions. According to the university’s official portal, by establishing a physical presence in India, UWA aims to deepen educational and economic ties, create new research and industry partnerships, and foster collaborative opportunities that benefit both countries. The UWA, one of the world’s top 100 universities, will become the first Ivy Leagueequivalent institution and the first from Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) universities to set up campuses in India.

Loading Vijay 2.0: Nanban Or Pokkiri?

After 15 days of despair, today TVK leader Vijay must have woken up with hope. Supreme Court, hearing petitions in connection with the Karur stampede that killed 41 people on September 27, had made some observations on Friday that should be solace to Vijay and his party.

And the verdict is expected today. The apex court had asked why a single

judge bench of Madras high court ordered an inquiry by a special investigation team when a division bench of the Madurai bench of the same high court had taken cognizance of the matter. It also wondered how the govt ensured that a postmortem was conducted on all the 41 bodies within five hours. Going by the recent history of our judicial process, however, courts have made strong observations against one party and given verdicts in favour of the other. So, Vijay would be hoping, with his fingers crossed.

Whatever the court order, Vijay is at a crossroads. A favourable order by Supreme Court may up his stakes, yet he should make an important decision soon: Should TVK align with AIADMK. Since the launch of TVK, a group within has been pushing for this alliance.

Their theory: The party should get power on its debut, or it may not be able to sustain itself. And AIADMK, on which Vijay has been soft while attacking DMK and BJP, is the only choice for an alliance. The hitch was who – Vijay or AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami – would be the chief minister candidate. Neither would agree to play the second fiddle, even if they had to share the tenure.

With EPS opening his arms again to Vijay in the aftermath of the Karur tragedy, the proposition for an alliance is back on the TVK table. Seat-sharing and the CM post would continue to be stumbling blocks for a possible marriage of convenience, but what could make the decision more difficult for Vijay is AIADMK’s tieup with BJP – after all, they call it NDA. Opportunism is part and parcel of politics (if you don’t trust me, ask Kamal Haasan), but having sworn BJP as his 1 ideological enemy while launching TVK, joining NDA would mean Vijay being opportunistic too early into his political career. What if BJP, in its insuppressible urge to defeat DMK “at any cost”, makes a tactical exit from the AIADMK alliance to make space for TVK?

The saffron party would gain nothing for itself from this arrangement other than getting vengeful self-gratification of making things difficult for DMK. Highly hypothetical this may sound, but in the event of such a reconfiguration of the opposition, Vijay will have one reason less not to join hands with AIADMK. But should Vijay yield to that temptation? Let me reproduce what I wrote in this column in November last year: Vijay, 50, has age by his side.

Fighting the 2026 assembly election alone – or with some smaller players who are willing to rally behind him – will help him test his real strength. If TVK gets more than 10% votes, anyone would consider him as much a potential ally as a worthy opponent. Whether he wins a seat or not, he can invest the next five years in building political heft by attracting some political veterans and promising youngsters who can form a critical core of the party which now has no big name beyond himself. If Vijay is here for the long run, he shouldn’t be an also-ran. Would I change anything from that paragraph written almost a year ago? Well, just one thing: his age. -
