BHU doctors perform 10-hour-long cardiac surgery on a 10-yr-old boy

Varanasi : A team of doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), successfully performed a 10-hour long surgery on a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour, where the tumour thrombus extended from the inferior vena cava (IVC) into the right atrium. The doctors claimed that the surgery was the first of its kind in this region. The boy is recovering rapidly and will soon be referred back to Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre, where he received neoadjuvant chemotherapy.. Given the tumour’s extensive spread, Prof Vaibhav Pandey formed a team that included Profs Arvind Pandey and Siddharth Lakhotiya of the cardiothoracic surgery dept and Dr. Pratibha Rai of the cardiology department.
