Traffic was diverted in Chennai on Saturday (January 17) on the occasion of Kaanum Pongal.

According to a press release issued by the Chennai Metropolitan Traffic Police:

On the occasion of Kaanum Pongal, a large number of people are expected to gather on all the roads in Chennai, especially on Kamaraj Salai. As a result, traffic changes will be made from 11 am.

Vehicles coming from Parry's Corner towards Gandhi Statue will have to be diverted via Kodi Mara House Road near the War Memorial and will have to take the Wallajah Point-Anna Salai-Anna Statue-Spencer Junction to reach their destination. (Chennai city buses are exempted from this).

Vehicles coming from the war memorial towards the beach will be diverted from Adams Junction towards Swami Sivananda Salai for parking. The road from the Statue of Labor to the Statue of Kannagi will be converted into a one-lane road. Chennai Metropolitan Buses will not be allowed to take a right turn from Statue of Labourers Junction towards Wallajah Road. Buses heading towards the Statue of Labourers will be diverted from Kannagi Statue Junction via Bharathi Salai, Bells Road, Wallajah Salai, Anna Statue to reach their destination.

Vehicles (except Chennai City Buses) are not allowed from Gandhi Statue towards Kannagi Statue. Instead, they are RK Road - Music Academy Junction - DTK. Road - G.R.H. Tip Bell - G.P. Road-Anna can reach their destination by road.

Victoria Inn Road and Bells Road will be converted into one-way road from Bharti Road junction and vehicles will not be allowed from Walaja Road junction.

Vehicles heading towards Kannagi idol on Bharati Road can reach their destination via Tiruvallikeni Highway-Walaja Road-Anna Road from Ratna Cafe junction. At the Periyar idol junction, only beach bound vehicles will be allowed towards Swami Sivananda Road. Other vehicles can reach their destination via Anna Statue - Anna Road.

Parking spaces: Public can park their vehicles on Chennai Foreshore Road (all vehicles except buses and commercial vehicles). Also, the public should stop their vehicles and cooperate with the police at Chennai University, Swami Sivananda Road, MRTS Chepakkam, Lady Wellington School, Queen Mary Mahar College, Srinivasapuram Loop Road (Buses Only), Public Works Ground, St. Pete's Ground, Annai Satya Nagar, E.Vera Road, Medical College Ground, State College etc.
