The JSS University will invest Rs. 2,000 crore in Mysuru for its new campus and establish state-of-the-art facilities to draw both domestic and international students.
This is reckoned to be the single largest chunk of investment in any field in Mysuru in the recent decades.

The last time when the city received a big chunk of funds was when IT major Infosys invested around Rs. 1,500 crore to establish its global education centre and the world’s largest corporate training centre to put the city on the IT map of the world, besides propping up Mysuru’s brand image as a knowledge city.

The ground breaking ceremony for the new campus project will be held on April 29 at Varuna on the outskirts of the city, where it has 102 acres of land. The project envisages not only a digital and smart campus, but also a cricket stadium modern enough to stage international tournaments.

University Vice-Chancellor B. Suresh said here on Saturday that eminent architects had already submitted blueprint of designs and the JSS Varsity Board was in the process of finalising it. He said the first phase is expected to be completed by December 2018 while the full-fledged international campus will be operational by 2025. The university, which already has collaborations with institutions in U.S. and Europe to sharpen its expertise, will explore tie-ups with universities in the non-English speaking countries to enhance its capabilities.

Concern over adoption of UGC regulations

The Madurai Kamaraj University Senate meeting on Friday witnessed dramatic scenes over the resolution to adopt University Grants Commission’s (UGC) revised regulations of 2016 that define minimum standards to be followed for the award of M.Phil and Ph.D degrees.

A key point of contention was the reduction in the permissible number of Ph. D and M. Phil scholars a research guide can have at any given point. While the 2009 regulations allowed a research guide to have eight Ph. D candidates irrespective of their position, the new regulations allow eight Ph. D candidates only to research guides who are in ‘Professor’ rank. Those in Associate Professor and Assistant Professor ranks have been allowed only 6 and 4 Ph. D scholars respectively. Similar restrictions have also been placed for M. Phil scholars as well.

A group of students stormed into the hall, where Senate meeting was in progress, and raised slogans against adoption of the revised regulations by claiming that it will indirectly deny opportunities to large number of students to pursue research.
 
S. Nehru, Principal, Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, said that the revised regulations will considerably affect the possibility of research work in affiliated colleges. “The National Assessment and Accreditation Council demands that colleges give adequate focus on research. However, the revised regulations will affect the scope of research in colleges,” he said. He also questioned the decision to retrospectively adopt the regulations from 05 May 2016, when UGC notified the revised regulations, since it will affect the students who had registered after that date. “For instance, a student who registered for M. Phil on 10 May 2016 would have thought that his research duration will be 2 years. The revised regulations, however, say that M. Phil duration will be at least three years,” he said.

V. Venkatraman, Principal, Rajapalayam Rajus’ College, pointed out that M. Phil admissions in the upcoming academic year will be severely affected with MKU choosing to adopt the regulations now with only a couple of months left for the commencement of the next academic year.
V. Chinniah, Chairperson, School of Management Studies, urged that the decision should be postponed until the university gets a new Vice-Chancellor.

K. Ravichandran, Special Officer, MKU, however defended the resolution by stating that any further delay will adversely affect the Ph. D and M. Phil students since UGC had made made it mandatory for all the students who register after 05 May 2016 to follow the revised regulations. The resolution was passed in the Senate amidst opposition.

பிராங்பர்ட்: ஜெர்மனியின் பிராங்க்பர்ட்விமானநிலையத்தில் இந்திய பெண்ணிடம் சோதனை என்ற பெயரில் அத்துமீறல் நடந்ததாக புகார் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.கர்நாடகா மாநிலம் பெங்களூருவைச் சேர்ந்த ஷருதி பசப்பா, 30 என்ற பெண் கடந்த மார்ச் 29-ம் தேதி பிராங்க்பர்ட் விமான நிலையத்திற்கு தனது கணவர், மகளுடன் சென்றுள்ளார். அப்போது விமானநிலைய பாதுகாப்பு அதிகாரிகள், அப்பெண்ணை தனியறைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று சோதனை என்ற பெயரில் ஆடைகளை களையச்சொல்லி கட்டாயப்படுத்தினர். இதனால் தான் அவமானப்படுத்தப்பட்டதாகவும். இனவெறி காரணமாக நடந்ததுள்ளதாகவும், சமூக வலைதளமான பேஸ்புக்கில் கூறியுள்ளார்.
