Sewage overflow: Not so ‘smart’ a railway junction

Passengers miffed at official inaction

It is not a new phenomenon for the regular passengers — the sight of smelly water flowing on Madurai road at the exit corner of Tiruchi Railway junction.

They invariably take evasive steps from inhaling the stinking smell emanating from the drainage water.

Though the issue has been crying for the attention of officials concerned for so long, it is yet to be resolved, much to the dismay of the passengers.

Locals and shopkeepers say that the issue has been unattended for more than six months inspite of repeated representation to officials of Tiruchi City Corporation and the Divisional Railway Manager office.

It all started when a heavy vehicle damaged a portion of the drainage network that carries the sewage water from the DRM office. The damage, which was smaller, has now become big.

It has eroded the road due to the extensive plying of buses and cars. The recent rain has also played its part in expanding the crater further.

“We are dismayed to see drainage water flowing at the bus stop of Tiruchi Railway junction. At least 30 to 40 members wait to board the buses at any given time. It is unfortunate that it has evaded the attention of the officials concerned,” says H. Ghouse Baig, a civic activist of Crawford in the city.

Shopkeepers say the drainage that carry domestic discharge from the DRM office is not functioning properly. The rain has compounded the issue.

“With improper discharge system, the drainage water stagnates on the road. The bad smell that emanates from the area is tough for us to bear. The passengers also find it difficult to bear the stink,” a shopkeeper said.

Pointing out the extensive usage of road and a large number passengers waiting at the bus stop, he said the officials concerned should study the issue immediately.

Administration in limbo due to delay in appointment of VC

The Syndicate Meeting of Bharathidasan University will take place on October 6 to discuss pending matters pertaining to teaching and non-teaching faculties.

The meeting, to be chaired by the Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Sunil Paliwal, is much awaited since stagnation in administration has been perceptible, according to senior professors, who requested anonymity.

Slowdown

At present, all files are required to be cleared by the Education Secretary in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, causing substantial slowdown in administration.

The process of choosing the next VC has also not picked up pace due to the persisting delay in appointment of the Governor's nominee in the VC Search Panel, the professors said.

Hence, the officiating committee to discharge the responsibilities of the VC needs to be reconstituted.

In a departure from the past, the officiating committee was formed with only two members: Principal Secretary for Higher Education and the Director of Collegiate Education.

Hitherto, the officiating committee with the Higher Education Secretary as the convenor had two members: one from among the professors of the university, and another representing senior teachers or principals of affiliated colleges.

Intense competition

This time, too, an attempt was made to follow the same process. While a professor was chosen from the university, there was intense competition from contenders from outside the university system for membership in the officiating committee.

Hence, to thwart the unsavoury situation, the two-member committee of the Education Secretary and the Director of Collegiate Education had to be constituted, university sources said.

Nevertheless, a fresh initiative could be taken to reconstitute the officiating committee.

Alongside, the Higher Education department must also pursue in right earnest with the office of the Chancellor the nomination of the Governor's nominee in the search panel at the earliest so that the process of choosing the next VC could be expedited, the teaching community emphasised.

விசாரணை:

அதிக அளவில் பணம் டிபாசிட் செய்தவர்களின் வங்கிக் கணக்குகளை, வருமான வரித் துறை கண்காணித்து விசாரித்து வருகிறது. இவ்வாறு அதிக அளவில் டிபாசிட் செய்த மத்திய அரசு ஊழியர்களின் வங்கிக் கணக்கை ஆய்வு செய்ய திட்டமிட்டு உள்ளோம். இது தொடர்பாக, மத்திய நேரடி வரி வாரியத்துடன் பேசியுள்ளோம். அவர்கள் தரும் தகவல்களின் அடிப்படையில், விசாரணை நடத்தி, நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும். இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார்.

இறந்த தாய்க்கு சேர வேண்டிய குடும்ப ஓய்வூதிய நிலுவைத் தொகையை மகனுக்கு 48 மணி நேரத்துக்குள் வழங்க தமிழக அரசுக்கு சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றம் நேற்று முன்தினம் உத்தரவிட்டுள் ளது.

சைதாப்பேட்டையைச் சேர்ந்தவர் வழக்கறிஞர் காட்வின். இவரது தந்தை ஆல்பர்ட் தேவராஜ் சார்பு நீதிபதியாக பணியாற்றி கடந்த 1970-ல் ஓய்வு பெற்றவர். கடந்த 1985-ல் ஆல்பர்ட் தேவராஜ் மரணமடைந்தார். இதையடுத்து, அவரது ஓய்வூதியத்தை காட்வினின் தாய் அனிராஜம் பெற்று வந்தார். இந்நிலையில், அவர் கடந்த 2014-ல் காலமானார். இதையடுத்து, தனது தாய்க்கு வரவேண்டிய குடும்ப ஓய்வூதிய நிலுவைத் தொகையை வழங்கக்கோரி காட்வின் சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தார்.

இதையடுத்து ஓய்வூதிய நிலுவைத் தொகையை வங்கி அதிகாரிகள் 48 மணி நேரத்தில் மனுதாரரின் வீட்டுக்கே நேரில் சென்று வழங்க தமிழக அரசு நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டுமென உத்தரவிட்டனர்.

பேருந்தில் டிக்கெட் எடுக்குமாறு கூறிய நடத்துனர் ஒருவருக்கு கன்னத்தில் அறைந்த பெண் காவல்துறை உறுப்பினர் ஒருவரால் பரபரப்பு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது.

சென்னை குரோம்பேட்டையிலிருந்து காமராஜபுரம் வரை செல்லும் பேருந்து ஒன்று, லட்சுமி பேருந்து நிலையத்திற்கு சென்றபோது, 5 பேர் அதில் ஏறி உள்ளனர். அவர்கள், ஒரு குழந்தையை விடுத்து, 4 டிக்கெட் மட்டுமே எடுத்தனர்.



அதற்கு நடத்துநர், 3 வயதிற்கு மேல் உள்ள குழந்தைகளுக்கு டிக்கெட் எடுக்க வேண்டுமென கூறியிருந்தார்.

இதனால் ஆத்திரம் அடைந்த கிண்டி மகளிர் காவல் நிலைய பெண் காவலர் வித்தியா என்பவர், தான் ஒரு போலீஸ் எனக் கூறி, நடத்துனர் கன்னத்தில் அறைந்துள்ளார்.

இது தொடர்பாக புகார் அளிக்கப்பட்டதன் பேரில், பெண்ணிடம் விசாரணை நடத்தப்பட்டது. தகவல் அறிந்த சக ஓட்டுநர்கள், பேருந்துகளை காவல் நிலையம் முன்பு நிறுத்தி, உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டுமென, காவல்துறையினரிடம் வலியுறுத்தினர்.

யேமன் உள்ளிட்ட முஸ்லிம் மக்கள் அதிகம் வாழும் நாடுகளில் மிகக் குறைந்த அளவில் மது அருந்தும் பழக்கம் இருந்து வருகிறது.

இதில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க வேண்டிய விஷயம் என்னவெனில் இந்தியா இந்த பட்டியலில் இடம் பெறவில்லை என்பதுதான்.
