UGC asks varsities to launch anti-spitting campaigns

Coimbatore: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to involve students in spreading awareness among the public against spitting in public places. Calling it as a social problem, in a letter to the vice chancellors of various universities across the nation, Mr Rajnish Jain, secretary of the UGC stated that the government of India has initiated the campaign with the aim of increasing awareness about the prevalent problem of spitting in public. The letter pointed that spitting in public is a sickening sight and the practice is responsible for spreading of several communicable diseases including ailments like tuberculosis (TB).

Stating it was a common sight to witness people spitting in public spaces, he urged the youth to play an active role in spreading awareness in order to bring to an end to the social problem. Mr Jain suggested that activities like rallies and campaigns in this direction can be initiated by students of universities and affiliated colleges. National Service Scheme (NSS) wing of the educational institutions can take up the initiative. In his letter, Mr Jain recommended that colleges and universities put up posters on themes of ill-effects of tobacco consumption among other subjects inside their respective campus.

When DC contacted the heads and management of a few higher educational institutions in and around the textile city, a majority of them stated that they are awaiting the new academic year to begin after which a plan of action will be designed and implemented on these lines.

As per the heavy rainfall warning issued by RMC on Saturday, Chennai is likely to expect rains in northern parts of the city till Monday. 


The air circulation off South Tamil Nadu coast is to bring scattered rains to interior parts of the state.

Chennai: Though interior parts of Tamil Nadu have received good rainfall during last few days, Chennai remained dry. However, regional meteorological centre forecasts isolated light rainfall over Chennai in next 48 hours due to a cyclonic circulation over south Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, rains in interior districts of Tamil Nadu are to reduce.

As per the heavy rainfall warning issued by RMC on Saturday, Chennai is likely to expect rains in northern parts of the city till Monday.

“Heavy rains are unlikely in the first week of June, but light spells of rain are expected as the monsoon hits Tamil Nadu. The temperature is expected to decline subsequently. With party cloudy sky condition, maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36 degree Celsius and 28 degree Celsius in Chennai,” said S. Balachandran, director, area cyclone warning centre.

The air circulation off South Tamil Nadu coast is to bring scattered rains to interior parts of the state. However, pre-monsoon rains are expected to be concentrated over Southeast Arabian Sea, bringing more rains to parts of Kerala, thereby reducing the amount of rainfall over interior parts of Tamil Nadu.

“IMD is expecting onset of mosnoon on May 29 but early monsoon onset with heavy rains is expected in southern districts in next 24 hours,” said weather blogger Pradeep John.

CHENNAI: Over one-third of the unfilled PG medical seats under management quota in the deemed medical universities are in Tamil Nadu. The Medical Council Committee, functioning under the Union Health Ministry’s Directorate General of Health Services, has surrendered over 150 PG medical degree and diploma seats to various private medical universities in Tamil Nadu. The committee usually conducts the single-window admission counselling for all management seats of PG medical courses in deemed universities across the country.

Even after a mop-up round of counselling, over 450 seats across the country remained unfilled and over 150 were in Tamil Nadu. The private universities are now free to admit students on their own, before the deadline of May 31.

“Non-clinical PG seats were not filled even after the mop-up round (of the counselling). Because there is no scope in these courses,” a Directorate General of Health Services official told Express.“Also across India, over 200 non-resident Indian (NRI) seats were not filled. This is because of the huge fee that the private medical colleges charge. Per annum, Rs 40 lakh fee is collected for each NRI seat and many cannot afford it. These colleges should reduce the fee,” the official added. The official said that the percentile was further reduced, but still, there were no takers for many of the courses.

''இதனால், அடுத்தடுத்த ஸ்டேஷனுக்கு ரயில் செல்ல தாமதம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த சிறப்பு ரயிலால், அந்த வழித்தடத்தில் இயங்கிய, 14 ரயில் போக்குவரத்து தாமதமானது,'' என்றார்.
