I-T seizes contractor’s ₹4cr from junkyard under Gemini flyover

The continuing income tax searches on Chennaibased SPK and Co, in which ₹180 crore in cash and 107kg gold have been seized, have exposed a nexus between some state highways officials and contractors not merely in amassing unaccounted wealth, but also in safekeeping the money.

The I-T investigation wing, which was following the trail of money from contractor Nagarajan Seyyadurai’s premises, seized ₹4 crore hidden at a junkyard of the highways department under the Gemini flyover on Tuesday night. The shop-like structure from where the money was seized is located close to the highways department office on Anna Salai.

Seyyadurai’s firms have been handling several state highways projects including the ₹200-crore project to widen Vandalur-Walajabad Road, and maintenance of several roads in Ramanathapuram, Krishnagiri and Virudhunagar districts for close to ₹2,000 crore.

His business associate in one of the firms is a close relative of a senior AIADMK leader.

This is the third time that income tax officials are searching a state government office in Tamil Nadu in recent years. During the demonetisation phase, I-T officials had searched then chief secretary Rama Mohana Rao’s office at the state secretariat in December 2016. A week ago, I-T officials searched Tamil Nadu civil supplies corporation managing director M Sudha Devi’s office as they were pursuing the nexus between corporation officials and civil supplies contractor Christy Group, owned by T S Kumaraswamy.

The sleuths on Tuesday recovered a few crores of rupees allegedly belonging to Seyyadurai from a house in Mylapore. With this, the total seizure of cash in the ongoing searches on SPK and Co has touched ₹180 crore. I-T officials said they got ₹34 crore from a house in Mylapore. About 107kg of gold was also seized till Wednesday. This is among the biggest seizures of cash in I-T searches in the country, said a senior official in the I-T investigation wing.

“Wehaveseized some more jewellery, but are yet to assess its weight and value,” said the official. The previous highest seizure of cash in the state was ₹170 crore, from sand contractor Sekhar Reddy’s premises in December 2016.

“Nagarajan was expecting I-T searches ever since we knocked the doors of Christy Group a week ago. Thinking that keeping cash and gold at home would be dicey, he had moved it to a few safe havens. Cash was stacked into the boots of some cars too. Since we were keeping track of every movement, we could seize much of the money and gold in the first few hours of the search itself,” said the official.

The search teams had carried a few currency counting machines, and as the volume of the seized cash grew, more machines had to be brought in from State Bank of India after taking special permission from the bank headquarters, the official said.

Chennai airport has lowest peak hour departures

Capacity constraints seem to be limiting the number of departures from Chennai airport during morning peak hours. The airport has the least number of peak hour departures compared to airports in other metros.

Chennai handles 48 departures between 5am and 9am every day while Bengaluru handles 68, Hyderabad 60, Mumbai 93, and Delhi 150. Kolkata handles the same number as Chennai. The airport handles an equal number of arrivals. The majority of the flights are domestic ones.

Though the numbers are lower than other major airports, Chennai struggles with congestion during morning peak hours because of high number of departures slotted back to back and is not able to handle more planes because of absence of space in the terminals, good taxiways, parking stands near terminal buildings and baggage handling space. Airlines prefer morning departures on domestic routes because several passengers prefer to leave on a morning flight and reach their destinations on time for business meetings and return the same day. However, the airport is not able to offer new slots. This has encouraged airlines to introduce more red-eye flights, most of which are concentrated between 3.30am and 5am.

AAI is now trying to encourage airlines to scatter departures because there are time slots when there is hardly any aircraft movement. There is a plan to charge a congestion fee on airlines. Peak hours for Chennai are between 5am and 9am, of which the maximum departures happen between 5am and 7am. There are also a number of flights at 10am, 2.30pm, 5pm and then 9pm. “The number of flights is low from 10am to 2pm. A few of the flights can be operated at this time instead of crowding all the departures early in the morning,” said a senior AAI official. “We do not have runway congestion as the runway can handle more planes. If there is a need, the second runway can also be used,” he said. The lack of apron space and absence of a rapid exit taxiway limit the number of flights that can be handled.

SC on Sabarimala: Women have right to enter the shrine

Questioning the legality of the ban on the entry of women in the age of 10 to 50 years to the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala in Kerala, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said there was no concept of private temples and there could be no discrimination on basis of gender, sex and menstrual age.

The SC said women have a fundamental right to access places of worship and the decision of the Travancore Devaswom Board to restrict entry needs to be re-examined, signalling that it might look to strike another blow in favour of women’s rights by getting a religious institution to amend its rules.

Right to worship was a constitutional right and women’s right to enter a temple was not dependent on any law, a five-judge constitution bench of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices Rohinton F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra held.

Giving a boost to the battle of women’s rights activists who are fighting for temple entry, the bench said all people were equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practise and propagate religion.

The CJI said, “If a man can go then a woman can also go. Both male and female can be denied access on the ground of health, morality and public order. What applies to the male is also applicable to female. Discrimination on the ground of gender is absolutely against the constitutional mandate. Public place is different from private place but there is no concept of a private temple. Once it is a temple, then everyone can go.”

Senior advocate Indira Jaising, appearing for NGO ‘Right to Bleed’, said the healthy biological process of menstruation is being used in the name of religion to discriminate against women and contended that a woman of menstrual age could not be treated as “polluted and untouchable”. She said the practice in Sabarimala temple of denying entry to women and girls aged 10 to 50 years led to social stigma and shame, and a modern society could not continue with “menstrual discrimination” when the Constitution mandated right to equality and health of women to achieve gender justice.

“The classification is itself illegal and unconstitutional. It fails the test of constitutional morality. It is discrimination on the ground of sex that cannot be allowed at religious places. It has not been a custom from time immemorial. Even if it is a custom, it has to be overruled,” Jaising said.

Justices Nariman and Chandrachud, however, said there was no need to invoke Article 17 (abolition of unaccountability) to examine the validity of the practice as Article 25 (right to profess, practice and propagate religion) is broad enough to allow women of all ages to enter the temple.

“Every woman is also a creation of god; if you do not believe in god, then of nature. Then why should there be discrimination on the basis of gender in employment or at places of worship?” Justice Chandrachud asked.

Justice Nariman said the classification barring women of 10-50 age group seemed unconstitutional “on the face of it” as a person could be in a stage of menstruation below 10 years or above 50 too. “On that ground itself it would be violative as it leaves out other persons who are similarly situated but can be allowed entry into the temple,” he said.

Senior advocate Raju Ramachandran, who is assisting the court as amicus curiae, said the restriction had the effect of invading the privacy of a woman. A female pilgrim making a pilgrimage to the temple was making an involuntary disclosure about her age and menstrual status. But the court said it would not go into the privacy aspect.

அவசரத்தில் பயணம் செய்பவர்கள், `பேருந்து உரிமம் பெற்றதா, அவர்களுக்கு மாற்றுப் பேருந்து உண்டா' என்பதைப் பார்க்க நேரமிருப்பதில்லை. அதிக காசை கொடுத்துவிட்டு இரவு நிம்மதியாகத் தூங்கலாம் என அத்தனை பேரும் தங்கள் உயிர்களை அடமானம் வைக்கிறார்கள்.

`தனியார் பேருந்தைப் பிடித்தால் போகவேண்டிய இடத்துக்கு நேரத்துக்குப் போகமுடியும்' என்பதால்தான் கட்டணம் அதிகமாக இருந்தாலும் தனியார் பேருந்துகளை பலரும் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கிறார்கள். பந்தயத்தில் ஓடும் குதிரைகள் போல ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் மக்கள் தங்கள் பயணங்களை ஓட்டுநர்கள் மீதும், அவசர நேரத்தில் சிக்கும் பேருந்துகளின் மீதும் நம்பிக்கை வைத்தே செல்கின்றனர். ஆனால், பல நேரங்களில் அவசரகதியில் நாம் தேர்வு செய்யும் பேருந்துகள் சொதப்பிய அனுபவம் நம்மில் பலருக்கும் இருக்கும். கடந்த ஞாயிறு அன்று காசைக் கொட்டிக்கொடுத்து தனியார் பேருந்து ஒன்றில் மதுரையிலிருந்து சென்னைப் பயணம் செய்ய முற்பட்ட 60 பேர் திக்குத்தெரியாத பொட்டல் காட்டில் நிற்கும்நிலை ஏற்பட்டது. ஏ.சி. காற்று வரும் இடத்திலிருந்து புகை வந்ததால் பேருந்தில் பயணித்த நான்கு பேர் மயக்கம்போட்டு விழுந்துள்ளனர்.

இதுகுறித்து பேருந்தில் பயணம் செய்த சென்னையைச் சேர்ந்த சுபாஷ் என்பவர் நடந்த சம்பவத்தை விளக்கிக்கூறினார்:-     

``காமராஜரின் பிறந்தநாள் விழாவுக்காக எங்கள் வழக்கறிஞர் குழுவுடன் மதுரை சென்றிருந்தோம். விழா முடிந்து மதுரை மாட்டுத்தாவணி பேருந்து நிறுத்தத்துக்கு வந்தபோது, `சென்னை போகணுமா?' என்று கேள்வியுடன் ஏஜென்ட்டுகள் எங்களை சுற்றி வளைத்தனர். `எந்தப் பேருந்து சீக்கிரம் கிளம்பும்?' என்று கேட்டதற்கு, `ஸ்ரீரங்கா டிராவல்ஸ்' என்கிற ஒரு பேருந்தில் ஏற்றிவிட்டார்கள். ஆளொன்றுக்கு 650/- ரூபாய் என்றுகூறி எங்கள் மூன்று பேருக்கு ரூபாய் 1950/- வாங்கினார்கள். பயணச் சீட்டுக்கு பதில் ஒரு துண்டுச்சீட்டில் எழுதிக் கொடுத்தார்கள். மாலை 5:30 மணிக்குப் பேருந்தில் ஏறியபோது `15 நிமிஷத்துல பஸ் எடுத்துருவோம்' என்று கூறினார்கள். ஆனால், முழுவதும் பயணிகளை நிரப்பிவிட்டு இரவு 7 மணிக்குதான் பேருந்தை எடுத்தார்கள். 

பேருந்தை எடுத்தும் ஏ.சி போடவில்லை. ஜன்னல்களையும் மூடிவிட்டார்கள். `ஏ.சி ஓடவில்லை' என்று ஓட்டுநரிடம் புகார் செய்யச் சென்றோம். அவர் `ஏ.சி போடுகிறேன்' என்றார். சொல்லிவிட்டு சீட்டில் வந்து உட்காருவதற்குள் ஏ.சி. நின்றுவிட்டது. மறுபடியும் கேட்கச்சென்றபோது, ரேடியேட்டரிலிருந்து `சூடான தண்ணீர்' கொப்பளித்து பேருந்தின் உட்புறமாகப் பீறிட்டு அடித்தது. ஏ.சி. காற்று வரும் வழியாகப் பயணிகள் உட்கார்ந்திருந்த இடங்களில் புகை சூழ்ந்தது. பேருந்தை உடனே ஓரங்கட்டும்படி கத்தினோம். இன்னும் சற்று நேரம் விட்டிருந்தால் நிச்சயம் பேருந்து தீப்பிடித்திருக்கும். உள்ளே சூழ்ந்த புகையினால் சிறுவர்கள் உட்பட 4 பேர் மயங்கி விழுந்தார்கள். அவர்களை வெளியே தூக்கி வந்து, காற்றோட்டம் கிடைத்தவுடன் மயங்கியவர்கள் விழித்தனர். மிகவும் சிரமத்துக்கு உள்ளாகி மாற்றுப் பேருந்தை கொண்டுவரும்படி ஓட்டுநரிடம் முறையிட்டோம். `எங்களிடம் வேறு பேருந்தே இல்லை' என்று ஓட்டுநர் கூறியதும் அதிர்ச்சியடைந்தோம். ஓட்டுநரிடம் வாக்குவாதம் அதிகரிக்க, அங்கு பிரச்னை ஆகிவிட்டது. டிராவல்ஸ் உரிமையாளரை தொடர்புகொண்டு மாற்றுப் பேருந்து ஏற்பாடு செய்து தரக் கேட்டோம் அல்லது `எங்கள் பணத்தைத் திருப்பிக்கொடுங்கள் வேறு பேருந்து பார்த்துக்கொள்கிறோம்' என்றோம். ஆனால் அவரோ `இருப்பது ஒரு பேருந்துதான். வேறு பேருந்தெல்லாம் இல்லை. பேருந்தை சரிசெய்த பிறகு அதிலேயே பயணம் செய்யுங்கள். இதற்கு நாங்கள் என்ன செய்யமுடியும். பணத்தை நிச்சயம் திருப்பித்தர முடியாது' என்று எகத்தாளமாகப் பேசினார்.

`பொறுப்பில்லாமல் பேசுகிறீர்களே' என்றதற்கு, `எங்களைக் கேட்டா ஏறினீர்கள், உங்களை ஏற்றிவிட்ட ஏஜென்டிடம் கேளுங்கள். உங்களால் முடிந்ததைப் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள்' என்று ஆணவமாகப் பேசி இணைப்பைத் துண்டித்துவிட்டார். பிறகு அவரை தொடர்புகொண்ட முயன்றபோது அவர் பதிலளிக்கவில்லை. அப்போதுதான் கவனித்தோம் பேருந்தின் பின்புறம் `ஸ்ரீ எஸ்.ஆர்.எம் டிராவல்ஸ்' என்று எழுதியிருந்தது. பேருந்தின் முன்புறம் `ஸ்ரீ ரங்கா டிராவல்ஸ்' என்றும், பயணச்சீட்டில் `ஸ்ரீ ராம் டிராவல்ஸ்' என்றும் இருந்தது. பேருந்தில் எங்களுடன் பெண்கள், குழந்தைகள், முதியவர்கள் உட்பட 60 பேர் இருந்தோம். சுற்றி கும்மிருட்டாகவும், வெறிச்சோடியும் இருந்ததால் அனைவரும் அச்சத்தில் நின்றிருந்தனர். பேருந்தில் மாற்று ஓட்டுநரும் இல்லை, ஓட்டுநர் உதவியாளரும் இல்லை.

நெடுஞ்சாலை காவல்துறையைத் தொடர்புகொண்டோம். 45 நிமிடங்கள் கழித்து அவர்கள் வந்தார்கள். அவர்களிடம் நடந்ததைக் கூறினோம். `மெக்கானிக் சரிசெய்த பின் அதே பேருந்தில் செல்லுங்கள்' என்று அவர்கள் கூறினார்கள். ஓட்டுநர் தனது போனில் அழைத்த மெக்கானிக் ஒரு மணி நேரம் கழித்து வந்தார். அவர் பழுதை சரிசெய்துகொண்டிருந்த நேரத்தில், அந்த எல்லைக்குட்பட்ட காவல்துறையினர் வந்தார்கள். `மாற்றுப் பேருந்து இல்லாமல் உங்களுக்கு எப்படி உரிமம் அளிக்கப்பட்டது' என்று காவல்துறையினர் விசாரித்தனர். உரிமையாளரை போலீஸார் தொடர்புகொண்டபோது எந்தப் பதிலும் இல்லை. பேருந்தில் பயணம் செய்த ஒருவர் 6:30 மணிக்கு விமானம் பிடிக்கவேண்டியிருந்தது. மற்றுமொருவர் 6 மணிக்கு சென்னை சென்ட்ரலில் டெல்லிக்கு ரயில் பிடிக்கவேண்டியிருந்தது. இதனால் பழுதுபார்த்த பின்னர் அதே பேருந்தில் செல்ல வேறு வழியின்றி ஒப்புக்கொண்டோம்.

விராலிமலை வரை மெக்கானிக்கை பேருந்தில் செல்லுமாறு காவல்துறையினர் கேட்டுக்கொண்டனர். மெக்கானிக் பேருந்திலிருந்து இறங்கிய பிறகு, எதிர்பார்த்தது போலவே ஒன்றரை மணி நேரம் ஓடிய பேருந்து  திருச்சிக்கு மூன்று கிலோமீட்டருக்கு முன்பு மீண்டும் நின்றுவிட்டது. வேறொரு மெக்கானிக்கை வரச்சொல்லி பழுதைச் சரி செய்ய மேலும் ஒரு மணி நேரம் ஆனது. இரவு பெரும்பாலானோர் தூங்கவில்லை. வண்டியில் ஏற்றும்போது `இரவு 1:30 மணிக்கெல்லாம் சென்னை சென்றுவிடலாம்' என்று கூறினார்கள். ஆனால், கோயம்பேடு செல்ல காலை 6:30 ஆனது. சென்ட்ரலில் தொடர்வண்டி பிடிக்கவேண்டியவர் ரயிலை தவறவிட்டார். காலை 6:30 மணி விமானத்துக்கு, காலை 6:10 மணிக்குதான் விமான நிலையத்தில் இறக்கிவிடப்பட்டார். அனைவருமே கடும் மனஉளைச்சலுக்கு ஆளானார்கள். 

பேருந்தில் பயணித்த ஒவ்வொருவரிடமும் ஒவ்வொரு விலை வாங்கியிருக்கிறார்கள். நாங்கள் 650 ரூபாய் கொடுத்தோம். இன்னும் சிலர் 750 ரூபாய், 800 ரூபாய், பலரிடம் 1000 ரூபாய் வரை வாங்கியுள்ளனர். இதுபோன்ற மோசமான பயணத்தை நான் சந்தித்ததில்லை. முறையான உரிமம் பெறாத, இதுபோன்ற தகுதியற்ற டிராவல்ஸின் உரிமத்தை அதிகாரிகள் ரத்து செய்யவேண்டும்." என்றார் கொந்தளிப்புடன். இந்த விவகாரம் தொடர்பாகக் கருத்து கேட்பதற்கு பேருந்தின் உரிமையாளர் செல்வம் என்ற எண்ணுக்கு மீண்டும் மீண்டும் தொடர்புகொண்டபோது, ``தொடர்பு எல்லைக்கு அப்பால் உள்ளார்", என்றே வந்தது.

சகல பொழுதுபோக்குகளுக்கும் சாதனமாக வானொலி இருந்த காலம் உண்டு. ‘ரேடியோப் பெட்டி’ என அதற்கு நாமகரணம். அதை உயரத்தில் வைத்திருப்பதற்கென்று பிரத்யேகப் பலகை. அதன் மீது கம்பீரமாக அதன் இருப்பு. நம் சுகதுக்கங்களைப் பகிர்ந்துகொண்டும், ஆற்றிக்கொண்டும் அனுசரணையாக இருந்த அது, வீடுகளில் அயர்வைப் போக்கும் ஆசானாகவும் திகழ்ந்தது.

காலையில் ஒருவிதமான கையொப்ப இசை. அதற்குப் பிறகே நிகழ்ச்சிகள் களைகட்டத் தொடங்கும். ஆகாஷவாணியின் செய்திகள் மட்டுமே ஆதாரப்பூர்வமானவை. அவை வாசிக்கும் நேரங்களில் கடிகார முள் சரியான நேரத்திற்கு திருப்பி வைக்கப்படும். செய்திகள் வாசிப்பது என்று சற்று கம்பீரம் கலந்த சரோஜ் நாராயணசாமியின் குரலில் மோனலிசாவின் புன்னகையில் இருக்கிற அத்தனை ரசங்களைப்போல பாவங்கள் வெளிப்படும். எங்கு வானொலியில் செய்தி ஒலித்தாலும் அந்தப் பக்கம் செல்கிற அத்தனை வழிப்போக்கர்களும் ஒரு நிமிடம் நின்று முக்கியச் செய்திகள் இருக்கின்றனவா என்று கேட்டுவிட்டுச் செல்வார்கள். நாட்டின் தலைவர்கள் உடல்நலமில்லாமல் இருந்தால் ‘என்ன ஆயிற்று!’ எனக் கேட்பதற்கு செய்தி எப்போது வாசிப்பார்கள் என மக்கள் காத்திருப்பார்கள். ‘அண்ணா பேசுகிறார்’ என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டால் வானொலி இருக்கும் வீடு சாவடியாகும். தேர்தல் நேரத்தில் முடிவுகளைக் கேட்க கூட்டம் கூடும். வானொலி இருக்கும் வீடு அன்று வசதியானதாகக் கருதப்பட்டது.

பிறகு வந்தது இணைப்புத் தேவைப்படா டிரான்சிஸ்டர். எந்த இடத்திற்கும் எடுத்துச் செல்லலாம் என்பதே அதன் மகத்துவம். அளவு குறையக்குறைய மவுசு அதிகம். குடும்பக்கட்டுப்பாட்டை திக்கெங்கும் பரப்பியதில் அகில இந்திய வானொலிக்கு மிகப் பெரிய பங்கு. அதை ‘ஆகாஷ்வாணி’ எனச் சொல்வதா என்று தமிழகத்தில் கிளம்பியது மிகப் பெரிய சர்ச்சை. இந்தியா - பாகிஸ்தான் போர் 1971-ஆம் ஆண்டு நடந்தபோது தேசப்பற்றை ஊட்டியதில் வானொலிக்கு இருந்தது பெரும் பங்கு.

யாராவது முக்கியத் தலைகள் சாய்ந்தால் சோகமான இசை வானொலியில் கிளம்பும். அதுவே அன்று வெற்றிடத்திற்கு அடையாளம்.

நாங்கள் சிறுவராய் இருந்தபோது பிடித்த பாடல் வருகிறதா என வானொலியைத் திருப்பிப் பார்த்திருப்போம். காதைத் திருகினால் கான மழை பொழிவது வானொலி மட்டுமே. விநாடி வினா நிகழ்ச்சி வானொலியில் பிரபலம். இளைஞர்களை ஊக்குவிக்க இளைய பாரதம். கல்லூரிகளில் நடத்தப்படும் கலைநிகழ்ச்சிகளின் தொகுப்பாக மலரும். நம் பெயர் வானொலியில் வராதா என பொது வினாக்களுக்கு விடையெழுதிப் போடுவோம். வந்துவிட்டால் துள்ளிக் குதிப்போம்.

முத்துப்பந்தல் என்கிற ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சி. இன்றைய திரைப்படத் தொகுப்பு நிகழ்ச்சிகளுக்கு அதுவே முப்பாட்டன். கதைபோல ஒரு சம்பவத்தைச் சொல்லி அதன் இடையே சூழலுக்குத் தகுந்தவாறு திரைப்படப் பாடல் ஒன்றை ஒலிக்கச் செய்வார்கள். அதற்கு நான் உரையெழுதி அனுப்பினேன். பள்ளி முகவரி போட்டே அஞ்சல் செய்தேன். தேர்வானதாய் கடிதம் வந்தது. பள்ளி முழுவதும் அதே பேச்சு. தந்தையுடன் திருச்சிக்குப் பயணித்தேன். நிலையம் சென்றதும் பேரதிர்ச்சி. முத்துப்பந்தல் நிகழ்ச்சி மாணவர்களுக்கு அல்ல, பெரியவர்களுக்கே என அவர்கள் சொன்னதும் என் அத்தனை கப்பல்களும் கடலில் மூழ்கின. கையிலிருந்த எதுவும் நழுவி கீழே விழுந்து உடையவில்லை. காரணம், அந்தக் கடிதம் மட்டுமே கையிலிருந்தது. அன்று அப்பாவிற்கு அதிக செலவு வைத்து விட்டோமே என்று எதுவுமே சாப்பிடாமல், ‘பசியே இல்லை’ எனச் சமாளித்து வீடுவந்து சேர்ந்தேன். அப்படி என் முதல் முயற்சி முற்றிலும் தோல்வியானது. முத்துப்பந்தலில் முத்தெடுக்க முயன்று மூழ்கிப் போனேன்.

'Vamsam' TV serial actress commits suicide in Chennai

Chennai: Television artiste Priyanka of 'Vamsam' serial-fame committed suicide at her residence at Valasaravakkam here during the early hours of today.

Her body has been taken to Government Kilpauk Hospital for post-mortem.

When this reporter visited the spot - an apartment on Sivan Street - the Valasaravakkam police said she must have committed suicide on Tuesday night. However, confusion prevails as the investigation officials are not clear about the reason behind her decision to end her life.

This morning, when Priyanka's maid entered her room, she was shocked to see the actress hanging. Following this, she informed the police who rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

As soon as news spread, neighbours started to gather in front of the house of the actress.

Priyanka married a basketball coach, Arunbala, three years ago. According to sources in the area, there had always been arguments between the couple.

It is also said the fights were mostly because they were childless. "We have heard them quarrelling on and off. Their arguments were mainly because of having no baby even after three years of marriage," said a resident.

It is also learnt that Priyanka was living alone for the past few weeks.

However, the police have not come to any conclusion. "We have started to investigate. We can say anything only after the inquiry," a police official said, and added that her husband will be questioned.

He also said even the time of death was not yet confirmed which would be known only after the post-mortem.

In recent months, a couple of TV artistes have committed suicide, leading to concern about the well-being of such actors.

Actress Shobana and actor Sai Prashanth ended their lives due to reasons including mental stress.

A senior actress said, "There is an increase in such suicides by artistes due to pressure. It is high time the Small Screen Artistes Association organised a workshop or counselling session for its members."

`கூல்டிரிங்க்ஸ் குடித்தேன், மயங்கிவிட்டேன்' என்று திருவண்ணாமலை மாவட்ட நீதிபதி மகிழேந்தியிடம் கண்ணீர் மல்க ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண் வாக்குமூலம் கொடுத்துள்ளார்.

திருவண்ணாமலை, செங்கம் காலனி, கஸ்தூரி நகரில் உள்ள அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் ரத்தக் காயங்களுடன் ரஷ்ய நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த இளம்பெண் மயங்கிக் கிடந்தார். தற்போது அவருக்கு மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டுவருகிறது. நேற்று அவருக்கு சுய நினைவு திரும்பியது. உடனடியாகப் பெண் போலீஸார் அவரிடம் விசாரித்தனர். அப்போது அவர், கூட்டாகச் சிலர் தனக்கு பாலியல் தொந்தரவு கொடுத்ததாகக் குறிப்பிட்டார். அவர்கள் யார் என்று போலீஸார் விசாரித்தனர். அப்போதுதான் பிறந்தநாள் கொண்டாட்டத்தின்போது ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண்ணிடம் 5 பேர் அத்துமீறிய தகவல் போலீஸாருக்குக் கிடைத்தது. அவர்களைக் கைது செய்து தனித் தனியாகப் போலீஸார் விசாரித்தனர். விசாரணையில் திடுக்கிடும் தகவல்கள் வெளியாகின.

இதுகுறித்து போலீஸார் கூறுகையில், ``மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சை பெறும் ரஷ்ய பெண்ணுக்குக் கூட்டாகச் சிலர் பாலியல் தொல்லை கொடுத்துள்ளனர். அதுதொடர்பாக விசாரித்தபோது ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண் தங்கியிருந்த அப்பார்ட்மென்ட் விடுதியில் வேலைபார்க்கும் ஊழியர்கள் மீது எங்களுக்குச் சந்தேகம் ஏற்பட்டது. சம்பவத்தன்று அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் வேலைபார்க்கும் ஊழியர் மணிகண்டன் என்பவருக்குப் பிறந்தநாள். அதை நண்பர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து அவர் கொண்டாடியுள்ளார். அந்த விழாவில் நீலகண்டன், பாரதி, சிவா, வெங்கட் ஆகியோர் பங்கேற்றுள்ளனர். போதை தலைக்கெறியதும் அவர்களின் மனம் மாறியுள்ளது.



ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண், தனியாக இருப்பதையறிந்த 5 பேரும் மாற்றுச் சாவி மூலம் அறையைத் திறந்துள்ளனர். பிறகு, ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண்ணிடம் பிறந்தநாள் குறித்த தகவலைத் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். அப்போது, மயக்க மருந்து கலந்த கூல்டிரிங்ஸை இளம்பெண்ணுக்குக் கொடுத்துள்ளனர். அதைக் குடித்தவுடன் அவர் மயங்கிவிட்டார். அதன் பிறகுதான் அவர்கள் இளம்பெண்ணிடம் தவறாக நடந்துள்ளனர். மயக்கத்திலேயே ரஷ்ய இளம்பெண் இருந்ததால் அவர்களுக்கு பயம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. உடனே, மருத்துவமனையில் அவரைச் சேர்த்துள்ளனர். இந்தத் தகவல் கிடைத்ததும் நீலகண்டன் அவரின் தம்பி பாரதி, மணிகண்டன், சிவா, வெங்கட் ஆகிய 5 பேரை கைதுசெய்துள்ளோம். அவர்களிடம் விசாரணை நடத்திவருகிறோம்" என்றனர்.
