CHENNAI : Who says crime doesn’t pay? It did for 11 mobile phone snatchers for over two years until the long arm of the law caught up with them.In a major crackdown, the gang from Andhra Pradesh, who were operating within the city, were nabbed recently.The investigation officer said S Ravi (27), the kingpin, arrived in the city a few years ago and was living in Avadi, where he worked as a carpenter. Some two years ago, he brought 10 men from his State and trained them on how to snatch mobile phones from unsuspecting victims. The training was held in Sholavaram.

The police got a whiff about the gang after two members were arrested within Flower Bazaar police limits for a mobile phone snatching incident some two months ago. During an investigation, they revealed that they were hired by Ravi to snatch mobile phones. He paid each man `6,000 every Monday. That’s not all. They were given offs on weekends. Their job was to hand over at least 50 phones every week to him. The gang mainly targeted passengers at bus stops in T Nagar, K K Nagar, Mambalam, and railway stations within the city. The duo was later released on bail.

The police kept an eye on their movements and nabbed them while they were handing over phones to Ravi. The rest of the gang members were also picked up from a house in Sholavaram. They were identified as - V Nani (19), M Ragulravi (29), S Yesu (25), V Durga (24), T Sayee (24), D Seenu (28), K Rajesh (21), A Mahesh (19), J Venkatesh (27) and J Raju (27). According to the police, Ravi used to collect the phones every Friday and returned to AP, where he will sell them off to a dealer.

CHENNAI : For failing to replace a defective laptop, a consumer forum has directed Apple India Private Limited and its authorised retailer Currents Technology Retail (I) Ltd to pay `93,900 to a customer.Raafiya of Poonamallee submitted before the forum that she suffered electric shock every time she used Apple MacBook Air, which she purchased for `78,900 in September 2013.

Requests to both retailer and company went in vain. The company’s customer care, in an e-mail, said she could change the charger adaptor herself. Denying the allegations, the retailer redirected her to deal the issue directly with the manufacturer since the laptop had a manufacturing defect. He was not authorised to do after-sales service. Despite repeated notices, Apple India Private Limited did not appear before the forum and was set ex-parte.

District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai ( South), presided by M Mony and consisting of member R Baskarkumaravel, referred to Consumer Protection Act and said the retailer also had a responsibility since he was the service provider.

SETC conductor arrested for misbehaving with female passenger

THANJAVUR: Kumbakonam West police on Wednesday arrested an SETC conductor for allegedly sexually harassing a woman passenger. According to sources, the 28-year-old woman was travelling from Chennai to Mannargudi in the early hours of Wednesday.

The conductor allegedly behaved inappropriately with her. The woman then got down at Kumbakonam and filed a complaint with the police at the outpost near a bus stand. It is said that the conductor Raju (31) of Mudukalathur in Ramanathapuram district came to the police outpost and reportedly apologised to the woman. However, the woman insisted on filing a complaint. Following this, the Kumbakonam West police registered a case under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition (Women Harassment) Act and arrested Raju.

Youth held for sexual assault of minor boy

Tiruchy: A 29-year-old youth was arrested for raping a seven-year-old boy on Wednesday. Police sources said that R Pradeepan (29) is a daily wager, residing in the Sri Lankan refugee camp. On Tuesday, he picked up a 7-year-old boy who was playing the locality. He took the child to an isolated place and raped him. Noticing the child’s injuries, his parents filed a complaint with the Cantonment AWPS on Wednesday.

Dharmapuri college suspends student

The Government Dharmapuri Medical College has suspended Mohammad Irfan, a first-year MBBS student hailing from Vaniyambadi, who is under investigation for a suspected act of impersonation in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.

Dr. Srinivasa Raju, dean of Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital, told The Hindu that the Directorate of Medical Education had recommended the suspension of the student on September 30, and the letter giving effect to the same was prepared the same day. “But since I was summoned to Theni by the CB-CID for deposition, the letter could not be sent on Tuesday. It will be sent on Thursday,” the dean said.

Irfan was among the 100 students admitted to the Dharmapuri Medical College through NEET this year. He went on medical leave on September 8, and did not return until Tuesday, when he surrendered before a court in Salem. On September 23, the medical college started verifying the bona fides of the students in the wake of the impersonation scam.

Irfan’s documents could not be verified due to his absence.
