High Court confirms conviction in ₹3.72 crore heist

Judges says modus operandi appears to have been inspired by a movie

The Madras High Court has confirmed the conviction and sentence imposed on 14 individuals involved in the sensational 2008 heist of ₹3.72 crore belonging to popular retail chain Mangal and Mangal and observed that the modus operandi for the crime appeared to have been lifted from Peter Colinson’s movie The Italian Job.

Justice P.N. Prakash seriously wondered whether the convicts had watched the movie before executing the crime. He said as per the prosecution case, the retail giant, a partnership firm, was into the business of selling home appliances, furniture and jewellery. It had its head office in Chennai and branch office in Tiruchi.

On August 10, 2008, the firm had transported some home appliances from Tiruchi to Chennai. In the same truck, it transported ₹3.72 crore in four cartons for purchasing gold.

The convicts posed as government officials and questioned the transporters for carrying huge amount of cash without documents.

Some of the convicts made the firm’s employees get into the closed goods compartment and locked them up from outside. A few others got into the driver’s cabin and drove the vehicle to a secluded place before dumping the vehicle and took away the cash.
Theatres, restaurants to down shutters

Multiplexes and theatres on the route that Chinese President Xi Jinping will take to reach Mamallapuram will remain closed on Friday. “PVR, that has a five-screen on ECR, will remain closed on Friday. Most theatres on the belt will resume operations only after 4 p.m. on Saturday,” a source from the film fraternity said. He added that Mayajaaal Entertainment would also remain closed on Friday. Mayajaal’s website did not allow bookings for Friday, and for the first half of Saturday.

Many restaurants have indicated that they would not be functioning until the Chinese President’s event concludes. A restaurant owner said people would not move out of their houses, considering the heavy police bandobast. “So it does not make sense for us to run businesses,” he said.

Another hotelier said: “I have decided to keep the shutters closed and serve food through the back door. I can’t afford to close for a full day,” he said. A hotel industry source said there were over 500 big and small restaurants that fall under the ECR/OMR stretch.
I-T searches on Cong. leaders’ institutions
Department recovers around ₹5 crore

11/10/2019, STAFF REPORTER

Searches were conducted on G. Parameshwara’s residence in Bengaluru on Thursday. Bhagya Prakash K.

The Income Tax Department on Thursday conducted searches on two groups of educational institutions connected to former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara and former Minister R.L. Jalappa. This comes amidst allegations that Central agencies are targeting Opposition leaders.

The searches relate to the capitation fee these institutions allegedly collected in cash for what is termed “medical seat blocking scam” during the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test counselling for undergraduate medical course for 2019-2020, sources in the department said. The department recovered around ₹5 crore from those covered in the search.

The searches are expected to continue on Friday.

The modus operandi of the alleged scam, say I-T sources, involves meritorious candidates, who have already got government seats, taking up a seat in the national counselling for deemed universities as well, essentially blocking them. Later they give it up, effectively making these management quota seats. These are later sold for a high capitation fee, often taken in cash and by the trustees of the institute in their personal capacity, sources claimed.
HC petitioner fakes Supreme Court order

11/10/2019, SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT,CHENNAI

The Madras High Court directed the registry to place before the Acting Chief Justice a case where a petitioner produced fabricated copies of a Supreme Court order, so that action may be taken against the petitioner and her lawyer.

On Thursday, K. Lakshmi, wanted a matter to be moved urgently before the vacation bench of Justice C. Saravanan and Justice S. Vaidyanathan, and produced what looked like copies of orders passed by the Supreme Court dated August 14 and September 30.

On verification of the documents, the bench found the orders to be fake.When the bench questioned the petitioner, she submitted that the orders were furnished to her by her advocate, S. Mahendran. To verify the genuineness of the orders produced before it, the Bench ordered their colour photocopies.

After the verification, the Registrar placed before the bench a copy of the Supreme Court order in the case dated August 14, after downloading it from the Internet.

Following this, Justice Vaidyanathan, who is the administrative judge in the vacation court, directed the matter to be placed before the Acting Chief Justice, “so that stringent action may be taken, by ensuring that no person creates fake orders and produces before this court”. “The litigant must understand that the court is a ‘Temple of Justice’ and Justice is beyond Temple,” the judge said.

Schools near the convoy route have been chosen for the welcome, as students will not have to wait for long. PTI

Several schools located in and around Adyar, Kotturpuram, Guindy and the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) have decided to function only till noon on Friday, and remain closed on Saturday, on account of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit for the India-China Summit.

The principal of a school near Kotturpuram said they had taken the decision to declare a half-day holiday on their own discretion. “Traffic is expected to slow down here after 2.30 p.m., and students might find it tough to get back home after 3 p.m. Since we have students coming from areas like Guindy, Thiruvanmiyur and Adyar, we thought it would be best to send students back home by noon,” she said.

‘No official holiday’

A senior official from the School Education Department maintained that they had not officially declared a holiday for any school in the city. “If schools have chosen to work for half a day, it is their own decision. We have not asked any school to declare a holiday or shorten working hours,” she said.

Schools in the Chennai education district, including AMM Matriculation School, Vana Vani School, St. Patrick’s Higher Secondary School and Anna Gem Science Park Matric Higher Secondary School, located near the route that Mr. Xi’s convoy will take, have been asked to send students of classes IX and XI for a reception to welcome him.

At a meeting, principals of the schools were informed by Education Department officials that the students are expected to stand between the Highways Research Station and the Gandhi Mandapam, holding flags of both the countries, in the afternoon. Similarly, students of schools on the OMR, that come under the Kancheepuram education district, have been asked to assemble in the area.

Schools located near the convoy route have been specifically chosen so that students will not have to wait for a long time and will have to assemble only for a short while before the Chinese President passes by.
