தமிழகம் முழுவதும் கடந்த 3 மாதத்தில் லஞ்சம் வாங்கிய வழக்கில் சிக்கிய அரசு அதிகாரிகள் 102 பேரை பணியிடை நீக்கம் செய்ய பரிந்துரை செய்து இருப்பதாக லஞ்ச ஒழிப்பு போலீஸார் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

தமிழகம் முழுவதும் லஞ்ச ஒழிப்பு போலீஸார் தீவிர சோதனைகளில் ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றனர். லஞ்சம் அதிகம் வாங்கப்படும் அலுவலகங்களை குறிவைத்து இந்த சோதனைகள் நடத்தப்படுகின்றன. சார் பதிவாளர் அலுவலகங்கள், வட்டார போக்குவரத்து அலுவலகங்கள், மாசுக் கட்டுப்பாட்டு வாரியம் மற்றும் மின்வாரிய அலுவலகங்கள், நகர திட்டமிடல் அலுவலகங்கள், டாஸ்மாக் மதுபான கடைகள் என பல துறைகளில் சோதனை நடத்துகின்றனர்.

கடந்த அக்டோபர் 1-ம் தேதிமுதல் டிசம்பர் 31-ம் தேதி வரை132 இடங்களில் லஞ்ச ஒழிப்புபோலீஸார் சோதனை நடத்தியுள்ளனர். இந்த சோதனைகளில் இதுவரை சுமார் 7 கோடி ரூபாய் பறிமுதல் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும், 7 கிலோ 232 கிராம் தங்கம், 10.52 காரட் வைரம், 9 கிலோ 843 கிராம் வெள்ளி, ரூ.37 லட்சம் நிரந்தர வைப்புத் தொகை ஆவணங்கள் போன்றவை கைப்பற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இதில் அதிகபட்சமாக வேலூர் மண்டல மாசுக் கட்டுப்பாட்டு அதிகாரி பன்னீர்செல்வத்தின் வீட்டில் இருந்து ரூ.3 கோடியே 25 லட்சத்து 20 ஆயிரம் ரொக்கம், 450 பவுன் நகைகள், 6.5 கிலோ வெள்ளிப் பொருட்கள் மற்றும் அவரது அலுவலகத்தில் இருந்து 33 லட்சத்து 73 ஆயிரம் பறிமுதல் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதற்கு அடுத்தபடியாக, சென்னை சைதாப்பேட்டை சுற்றுச்சூழல் கண்காணிப்பாளர் பாண்டியன் வீட்டில் இருந்து ரூ.7 கோடி மதிப்புள்ள 18 சொத்து ஆவணங்கள், ரூ.1 கோடியே 37 லட்சம் ரொக்கம், 3 கிலோ 81 கிராம் தங்க நகைகள், 10.52 காரட் வைரங்கள், 3.343 கிலோ வெள்ளிப் பொருட்கள், ரூ.37 லட்சம் மதிப்புள்ள நிரந்தர வைப்புத் தொகை ஆவணங்கள் கைப்பற்றப்பட்டன.

தஞ்சாவூர், ஸ்ரீனிவாசபுரத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர் சுவாமிநாதன், 87; மனைவி வசந்த லட்சுமி. இருவரும் ஓய்வு பெற்ற ஆசிரியர்கள். இரு மகன்கள் திருமணமாகி, பெங்களூரில் வசித்து வருகின்றனர்.சுவாமிநாதனும், வசந்த லட்சுமியும், தஞ்சாவூர் மருத்துவக் கல்லுாரி சாலை ஸ்ரீநகரில் உள்ள, தங்களது சம்பந்தி கோபாலகிருஷ்ணன் வீட்டில் தங்கியுள்ளனர்.ஞாபக மறதி நோயால் அவதிப்பட்டு வரும் சுவாமிநாதன், நேற்று முன்தினம் மாலை, 5:00 மணிக்கு, வெளியே சென்றவர், வீட்டுக்கு வரும் வழியை மறந்து, வழிதவறி சென்று விட்டார். பல இடங்களில் தேடியும் கிடைக்கவில்லை.

சுவாமிநாதனின் உறவினர் அரவிந்தன், சுவாமிநாதன் போட்டோவுடன், மொபைல் எண்ணை குறிப்பிட்டு, இரவு, 9:00 மணிக்கு, 'பேஸ்புக்'கில் பதிவிட்டார். அதை பார்த்த சிலர், சுவாமிநாதனை ரொட்டி பாளையம் பகுதியில் மீட்டு, தகவல் தெரிவித்தனர். இரவு, 10:30 மணிக்கு, அவரை வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்து வந்தனர். சுவாமிநாதன் மருமகள் ஸ்ரீவித்யா கூறுகையில், ''பேஸ்புக்கை பொழுதுபோக்கிற்காக மட்டுமே பயன்படுத்தும் நிலையில், இதுபோன்ற நல்ல காரியங்களுக்கும் பயன்படுத்த முடியும் என்பதற்கு, என் மாமனாரின் மீட்பு சம்பவம் உதாரணம்,'' என்றார்.

The education ministry is mulling over the decision to conduct a common entrance test for admission in undergraduate (UG) courses across all 54 central universities. A seven-member committee headed by RP Tiwari, VC of Central University of Punjab, will submit its report within a month and the move may get implemented for 2021-22.

“There is a lack of uniformity in the UG admission process as some universities conduct entrance test while few rely on merit-based admissions. This will simplify the admission process while customising the exam pattern.”

“Students diversity is poor across universities; the central admission process may allow students from all walks of life to enrol in desired varsities and courses,” Tiwari said.

The committee is expected to meet on January 9, 2021, to finalise the report before submitting it. Given the academic disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, there is uncertainty regarding the schedule of various entrance exams and many states have also rescheduled the board exams for May-June 2021.

Rama Shanker Dubey, vice chancellor of the Central University of Gujarat, says, “Some of the most sought-after universities conduct their entrance tests and it becomes difficult for students from economically weaker sections (EWS) to keep a tab, apply and appear for all the exams. Appearing for different exams also means that one has to pay the application fee for multiple tests. Common entrance test may also help in getting the academic cycle back on track in lesser time,” Dubey says.

“We have multiple state boards across the country and relative marking with respect to these boards can be a problem. But, the move also has a positive side where students will get through the UG admissions in just one test. The ministry will have to consider diverse factors before implementing it,” says Rajib Ray, professor, Kirori Mal College, Delhi University and president of Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).

RK Kohli, senior academician and former VC of Central University of Punjab, says, “In central admission processes, students’ first preference is always to join an old, well-known and reputed university. While most new universities are not so popular, they are performing well as per assessment parameters. The uniform process may not allow all universities, new or old, to compete on the same level. Universities in the rural belt may be at a disadvantage and those in metropolitan regions will definitely receive more applications,” Kohli says.

With the experience and training gained in 2020, universities have now developed a better understanding to tackle uncertainties in 2021. Besides devising new methods to impart education, institutes are also planning to reopen in a phased manner.

“Given the infrastructural development and training during 2020, our university is all set for 2021 session. While the teachers are now much more confident and efficient in conducting classes online, students in areas with poor connectivity are longing for a normal life at campus. We plan to open up in a phased manner giving the final year students and the ones in areas with poor connectivity to come back to the campus,” says Jaskiran Arora, associate dean, BML Munjal University.

Amity University also comprehends on conducting hybrid classes this year. The university will hold face to face classes with 50% capacity of classrooms ensuring compliance of social distancing norms. In addition to this, remote mode of classes will continue to take place.

“A continuous review of the situation is being carried out. Comprehensive e-content of all courses has been made available to the students before commencement of classes. Students belonging to the Science and Technology domains and other domains that require physical presence will be provided with virtual labs. For research-based and lab-based courses, physical lab facilities will be available to 50% of students at a time,” says Balvinder Shukla, vice chancellor, Amity University.

IIIT Naya Raipur will conduct the upcoming academic year 2021 virtually. The institute has shifted the courses that require the mandatory physical presence of students to the next semester hoping that the students will then be present at the campus, says Pradeep K.Sinha, vice chancellor and director, IIIT-Naya Raipur.

Sona group of education institutions, Tamil Nadu will involve more project-based work and hands-on learning for the students this year. The exams will be conducted with the help of AI-enabled auto proctored from remote locations, says Chocko Valliappa, vice chairman, Sona group of educational institutions. Owing to the ongoing pandemic and the consequent economic difficulty, most institutes are not planning to increase the fee structure this year to lighten the pressure on students and parents. Universities are adopting alternative measures to increase revenue sources rather than increasing fees.

With 657 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras for every sq.km, Chennai stands first among 130 populous cities in the world in CCTV camera density. Hyderabad stands second in the country with 480 CCTVs per sq.km, says a recent study by Virtual Private Network (VPN) service provider Surfshack, report Sindhu Kannan & Srikkanth D.

But the actual numbers for the city, 2.8 lakh, is fewer than Hyderabad’s three lakh, London’s 6.6 lakh and Beijing’s 10.1 lakh cameras. The number of CCTV’s per 1,000 people is also fewer in Chennai (25 per 1,000) compared to other cities in the top 10 ranking, except Delhi (14 per 1,000 people).

According to sources, the government’s ‘third eye’ campaign which aimed to bring the entire city under CCTV coverage has paid rich dividends. Traders, residents welfare associations and companies have contributed to its success. In what police believe to be an act of self-defence to escape from a rapist, a 19-yearold woman stabbed a 24-yearold man to death with a knife used by him to threaten her in his rape bid at Sholavaram in Tiruvallur district late on Saturday.

According to Ponneri DSP Kalpana Dutt, a legal opinion has been sought and the victim may not be arrested in the case.

The incident happened around 8pm when she went to relieve herself in a poorly-lit area surrounded by bushes. She failed to notice S Ajithkumar, 24, her relative from the same village, following her to the spot. The teenager panicked on seeing him standing with a beer bottle. Before she could move, the man placed a knife on her neck and threatened to rape her, police sources said quoting the victim.

As he began to undress, she pleaded with him to spare her. Realizing he was drunk, she pushed her away and he banged his head against a tree and dropped his knife. The victim picked up the weapon and stabbed him on his neck multiple times until he swooned. Leaving him dead at the spot, she reached Sholavaram police station on her own around 9pm and narrated the incident to the cops there.

‘Deceased man was an alcoholic’

Police personnel rushed to the spot, retrieved Ajithkumar’s body, and sent it to Stanley Hospital for postmortem. Police registered a murder case but no arrests have been made.

The DSP said the teenager was a Class X dropout. Ajithkumar, who had two children, was her aunt’s son. He got separated from his wife a few months back after a domestic dispute. According to police, the man was a jobless alcoholic and had theft cases pending against him. He always moved with a knife looking for easy targets.

“So far it appears to be an act of self-defence and there seems to be no other motive,” the police officer said.

“We will submit a final report in the court where it will be decided whether an action is warranted in the case,” the DSP added.
