San Francisco-based OpenAI has unveiled a new feature for its ChatGPT platform called Tasks, which is aimed at enhancing user experience by enabling scheduling and automation. Currently in beta, the feature is exclusively available to paid subscribers using ChatGPT Plus, Teams, and Pro plans. OpenAI plans to extend this capability to users on the free tier by the end of the year.

Announced in a series of posts on X, the Tasks feature allows users to set reminders or schedule actions directly through the ChatGPT web platform. While it does not currently integrate with external tools or devices, Tasks is a step towards giving the chatbot more agent-like functionalities, where it uses memory and multi-step execution to perform scheduled actions.

To access the feature, users can navigate to the Tasks page via the profile menu or type a natural language command in the chatbot’s text field. Tasks can be configured as one-off or recurring reminders, such as receiving a morning summary of the latest news or motivational messages before workout sessions. For instance, a user could prompt the chatbot with, “Send me the latest technology headlines at 7:30 pm every weekday,” and it will automatically generate the content at the specified time.

Although reminiscent of traditional scheduling apps, Tasks stands out by enabling the chatbot to perform actions at a set time. This includes generating text or images as part of the scheduled task. However, OpenAI clarified that these actions remain confined within the platform and cannot yet extend to external applications or services.

 Three Still In Critical Condition

Kolkata/Midnapore : A five-and-a-half-page report submitted to the health department by the 13- member probe committee, formed to investigate the death of a woman at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital following a C-section delivery, indicated that high doses of oxytocin were administered to five patients without following any protocol.

While 22-year-old Mamoni Ruidas died after a C-section on Jan 8, the condition of three others — Nasrin Khatun, Mampi Singh and Minara Bibi — who underwent C-section deliveries on the same day at the hospital, was stated to be serious. They were shifted to SSKM in critical condition. The fourth mother, Rekha Sau, was in stable condition at Midnapore hospital and was supposed to be discharged on Tuesday. However, her condition worsened in the afternoon, and her blood sample was collected for testing, according to her husband Santosh Sau.

According to a health department official, the patients’ blood was not clotting properly due to infection, and their lungs and kidneys were not functioning well. Nasrin Khatun and Mampi Singh are on ventilation. The report allegedly states that instead of the prescribed 10 units, 15 to 25 units were administered, causing a rapid drop in the patients' blood pressure.

Oxytocin is used to prevent excessive bleeding. "It appears that the women were given excessive doses of oxytocin, which worsened their conditions," sources said. Additionally, the report mentions that an RMO was on duty in the maternity department's OT at Medinipur Medical College that night. Being the senior doctor, he was expected to perform the surgeries. It is believed he was not present there. The matter will be further investigated.

Meanwhile, it was observed that family members were being given small notes to buy medicines from outside, which they brought to the hospital. Hospital sources stated that the use of bupivacaine, ranitidine, ceftriaxone, ondansetron, metoclopramide, fentanyl citrate, oxytocin and regallacted injections has been halted. Hospital superintendent Jayanta Raut stated that some injections and RL had been temporarily suspended, and alternatives were being provided.

On Jan 2, when placing an online order for medicines, 'Ringer's Lactate' was found to be blocked, so it was not purchased from outside but was brought from the Tamluk Hospital stock in East Medinipur. However, it is unclear how the saline that was supposed to be set aside came up at the medical college. A senior health department official said, “Everything is being thoroughly investigated.”

Saline supplier blacklisted The state Directorate of Health Services Central Medical Stores (CMS) has issued a notice on Tuesday, informing the MSVPs of medical college and hospitals as well as chief medical officer health of districts that all the items, including Ringer’s Lactate (RL) solutions, procured through state management information system (SMIS) from Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals, should not be used. The notice also stated that “all existing stock of the items supplied by Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd should be withdrawn from wards/hospitals until further orders, if not done already.” However, the notice stated that 'paracetamol infusion and sodium chloride injection may be procured from Pharma Impex laboratories Pvt Ltd through SMIS and other items can be procured as NON CAT (drugs which are not available in the catalog of the supplier) as per the existing policies.” TNN

8,000+ PG medical seats vacant in allIndia third round; parents fear admissions may be delayed

 15.01.2025 TIMES OF INDIA MUMBAI

Mumbai : More than 8,000 postgraduate seats are vacant in medical colleges across the country for the third all-India round of admissions. Besides, close to 100 new seats are added to the process. With the eligibility criteria brought down to 15 percentile in NEET-PG for admissions to postgraduate seats, many more students will now be eligible to participate in the third round. Postgraduate medical admissions have been delayed this year even as the results for NEET-PG were announ ced in July last year. The NEET-PG admission deadline this year is Feb 15.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has released the seat vacancy list for the upcoming third round. Parent representative Sudha Shenoy, though, said the second round of admissions is still not over in several states, and therefore now the third round is likely to be delayed. Seats even in sought-after courses such as general medicine, radio-diagnosis and general surgery, are also vacant for the the third round. At the start of the process, the cutoff was 50 percentile. It was lowered further as many seats, including in clinical courses, were vacant after the second round. Several students' organisations also demanded lowering of the percentile to fill the vacant seats.

Woman resident doc falls off KGMU hostel roof, is critical

Woman resident doc falls off KGMU hostel roof, is critical

TIMES NEWS NETWORK 15.01.2025

Lucknow : A woman junior resident doctor at King George's Medical University (KGMU) was critically injured after falling from a threestorey hostel building on Tuesday morning. Around 8:15am, she was found severely injured at the girls' hostel and was rushed to the trauma centre, where she remains on ventilator support. The police officials claim that the fall may have been a suicide attempt, but final confirmation will depend on the ongoing investigation.

KGMU spokesperson Prof Sudhir Singh confirmed that the hostel provost was alerted by a guard about the doctor's condition. She was found in a semi-conscious state with severe hip inju ries, and police were promptly informed. Chief medical superintendent of the trauma centre, KGMU, Prof Prem Raj Singh, stated that the doctor suffered fractures in both hip bones but did not experience internal bleeding in vital organs. Senior trauma surgeons Prof Sameer Mishra and Prof Anita Singh are overseeing her treatment. An investigation is underway to determine whether the fall was a suicide attempt or an accident. Preliminary reports suggest dissatisfaction in the job could have led the woman to take such a step. Additional commissioner of police Chowk, Rajkumar Singh, emphasized that full details will be available once the investigation is complete.

KGMU officials said that JR recently secured admission to the MD (Medicine) program for the July 2024 session after excelling in the NEET PG exam, and moved into the hostel just six days ago. Her fellow residents are in shock, as she was known for her dedication and talent. Dr Divyansh Singh, president of the Resident Doctors Association, visited the doctor and reported that her condition is critical but stable. He also informed that her parents, who arrived from Kanpur, are devastated by the tragic event.
