Another KGMU doctor resigns, set to join private hosp

Lucknow : With neurologist Prof PK Sharma submitting his resignation on Wednesday, King George’s Medical University lost another senior faculty member. Sharma will serve a threemonth notice period before joining a private medical institute in Alambagh. Prof Sharma cited personal reasons for his exit but said his years at KGMU gave him “immense recognition.” His resignation follows that of Prof Kshitij Srivastava from neurosurgery and Prof Adarsh Tripathi from the psychiatry department. The series of exits widened recently when four doctors — Dr Manu Agarwal (psychiatry), Dr Tanvi Bhargava (anaesthesia), Dr Ashok Kumar Gupta (plastic surgery) and Dr Karan Kaushik (cardiac anaesthesia) — resigned together.

They deposited three months’ salary in lieu of notice, which allowed immediate release. Dr Bhargava joined SGPGIMS, Dr Gupta moved to RMLIMS while Dr Kaushik and Dr Agarwal accepted a private hospital post. In the past month, KGMU also saw the departure of Prof Ajay Verma (respiratory medicine), who joined RMLIMS as head of department, Prof Srivastava, who shifted to a private hospital in Alambagh, and Prof Tripathi, who is serving notice. Senior faculty members have attributed the resignations to mismanagement and administrative lapses. Another factor is the pay gap.

Salaries for govt medical teachers range between Rs 1.25 lakh at the assistant professor level and about Rs 3 lakh for professors. Private hospitals are offering salaries upwards of Rs 10 lakh a month, along with incentives. Faculty have also raised uniform pay across departments, which places super-specialists, despite longer training and heavier clinical load, on the same scale as non-clinical faculty. Meanwhile, the KGMU Teachers’ Association has sought govt intervention and demanded a policy should be framed for doctors trained in govt institutions.

Nagpur : In a push towards academic autonomy in the medical sector, the state govt is considering granting deemed university status to three of its oldest medical colleges, namely JJ Hospital’s Grant Medical College in Mumbai, BJ Medical College in Pune, and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur. This would be the first time govt-run medical colleges in the state are accorded autonomy, a privilege largely enjoyed by private medical institutions. The most notable autonomous medical college in the public sector is AIIMS New Delhi, though it is supported financially by the union govt.

The proposal, submitted by the three colleges to the Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER), has been placed before the state govt, and a decision could be taken by the year-end. When contacted, DMER Director Dr Ajay Chandanwale said the proposal is in its nascent stages. Autonomy would empower these institutes to design their own courses, update curricula, and strengthen research facilities. At present, govt medical colleges in Maharashtra fall under the purview of DMER, while the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, conducts examinations and awards degrees.

With autonomy, these colleges would gain independence from both bodies, opening the door to quicker decision-making and academic innovation. Explaining the significance, GMCH Nagpur Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye said, “Autonomy would enable us to run our own courses, hold examinations, and take decisions at the institute level. One of the biggest advantages would be financial freedom, as we would be able to access and utilise our own funds instead of waiting for approvals from DMER.” Officials believe autonomy will not only accelerate institutional development but also benefit students and patients. There could be more postgraduate seats, specialised research centres, and upgraded infrastructure. “The idea is for the state govt to initially support the three colleges financially and then let them come up with proposals or services to boost their revenues,” said a highly placed govt official. Meanwhile, GMCH Nagpur will soon offer heart and liver transplants at its super specialty hospital.

Dean Dr Gajbhiye said the facility now has modular operation theatres where kidney transplants have already started. “Preparations for heart and liver procedures are in the final stages,” he added. Heart and liver transplants cost over Rs 15–22 lakh in the private sector. “But they are now covered under the revised scheme,” said Dr Gajbhiye.

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday inaugurated the city’s first steel flyover at Thiyagaraya Nagar, the J Anbazhagan flyover, named after late MLA J Anbazhagan, who was elected from the T Nagar constituency in the 2001 Assembly election.

The Rs 164.92-crore flyover, constructed using 3,800 MT of steel by the Greater Chennai Corporation, connects South Usman Road to CIT Nagar Main Road in T Nagar. It is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, especially at the busy junctions of South Usman Road-Burkit Road-Madley Road, South Usman Road-South West Boag Road-New Boag Road, and South Usman Road-CIT Nagar North Road.

This new two-lane flyover is 1,200m long and 8.40m wide. It has been integrated with the existing 800-m concrete flyover on South Usman Road using advanced technology, giving the structure a combined length of 2km. The project also includes a 120-m access ramp from the T Nagar bus terminus and a 100-m exit ramp leading towards the T Nagar shopping area via South Usman Road.

The flyover is expected to carry more than 40,000 vehicles daily and benefit nearly two lakh commuters.

Speaking to TNIE, S Arumugam (50), an auto driver in the area, said, “The new flyover has provided a dedicated space to travel for shoppers visiting T Nagar, with parking facilities below the structure and a service road leading towards Panagal Park, Kodambakkam, and Anna Nagar.

Vehicles commuting via South Usman Road to Saidapet or Adyar can use the flyover, thereby separating traffic movement and easing congestion. However, its true benefits can only be assessed during weekends and the festive season,” he added.

According to an official release, in the past four years, the city corporation has constructed bridges at 13 locations at a total cost of `300.16 crore.

Emirates Power Bank Ban 2025: New rules for flyers from October 1.

Travellers on Emirates flights will no longer be allowed to use power banks in the cabin starting October 1, 2025. Under the new policy, passengers may carry one power bank up to 100 watt-hours in their hand luggage, but it must remain switched off throughout the flight. Charging devices using power banks or the aircraft’s in-seat outlets is strictly prohibited.

Behind the Ban Emirates stated the decision followed a safety review. “The use of power banks has grown significantly in recent years, leading to more battery-related incidents in aviation. This measure aims to reduce such risks,” the airline said.

The airline highlighted that growing reliance on power banks has contributed to a rise in lithium battery-related incidents in aviation. By restricting their use, Emirates aims to reduce risks linked to overheating or malfunctioning batteries.

Safety Concerns Prompt New Rule Emirates said the restriction comes after a safety review. “The use of power banks has grown significantly in recent years, leading to more battery-related incidents in aviation. This measure aims to reduce such risks,” the airline explained.

Storage Guidelines for Passengers

Passengers must ensure that their power banks have clearly visible capacity labels and can only be stored under the seat or in the seat pocket ahead—not in overhead bins. Emirates also reminded travellers that aircraft are equipped with charging ports, so devices should be fully charged before boarding, especially on longer journeys.

Power banks, commonly used for smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and even laptops, typically contain lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which can be hazardous if damaged or misused.

Global Rules Back Up Restriction

Worldwide aviation authorities, including FAA, TSA, CAA, and IATA, already regulate power bank use. Generally, devices must be in hand luggage and not exceed 100Wh (about 27,000mAh). Some carriers allow power banks up to 160Wh with prior permission, but anything beyond that is prohibited. Emirates’ policy enforces stricter limits to maximize safety.

Travellers should check that their power banks are undamaged and for personal use only, and charge all devices before travel, as airport or in-seat outlets remain the only charging options.

Chennai-based Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has announced a waiver of penal charges for non-maintenance of Minimum Average Balance (MAB) in its Saving Account (SB-Public), effective from October 1, 2025.

The decision aims to provide relief to customers and makes the banking experience easier.

“We are very happy to announce this waiver, which will provide significant relief to our account holders. This decision reflects our commitment to customer-centricity and financial inclusion. Our goal is to make banking more convenient and hassle-free for our customers,” said Ajay Kumar Srivastava, Managing Director & CEO, Indian Overseas Bank.

The bank had already waived minimum balance charges for schemes like PMJDY, BSBDA, Small Accounts, IOB SB Salary Package, IOB Sixty Plus, IOB SB Pensioner Scheme and IOB SB Govt Account.

The penal charges for premium savings account schemes—including SB-MAX, SB-HNI, SB Prime, SB Priority, SB Privilege, NRI Elevate, NRI Privilege and NRI Signature—will remain unchanged.

The charges for the period up to September 30, 2025, including any shortfall, will continue to be levied as per existing rules.
